We rant about the BBC Proms... yet make ourselves slaves
This is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column
Why are arguments about the love of country always held between BBC-type Britain-hating pinkoes, embarrassed by their own nation, and shouty jingoes, who never think about what patriotism really means?
Here we all are in a state of rage about whether the words of Rule, Britannia should be sung at the Last Night Of The Proms.
Yet the same people who claim to be exercised about this meekly submit to compulsory masks, house arrest, the suppressio...

This should have been my monthly column for the American Magazine, 'First Things'
.......But it isn't being published there. Watch this space for the astonishing and worrying explanation of its non-appearance:
I am not sure if John Donne ever wrote anything else quite as alluring and seductive as this: The University is a paradise, rivers of knowledge are there, arts and sciences flow from thencegardens that are walled in, wells that are sealed up; bottomless depths of unsearchable counsels The waters of rest, they flow from this good Master, and flow into him ag...

Were holiday-wrecking quarantines worth it? Even the Government haven't a clue!
This is Peter Hitchenss Mail on Sunday column
As the Government wrecks another few thousand holidays with sudden quarantine, you might assume that it takes this sort of thing seriously, and keeps close track of it.
After all, you dont force people to abandon holidays they have saved up for all year, and stampede them into dashing for the nearest port or airport, or expect them to spend money they havent got on cruelly inflated ticket prices so they can meet a 4 a.m. deadline, just ...

PETER HITCHENS: My suspicion is that the wrecking of the economy and the state-sponsored panic of these times has killed more people than Covid ever did
This is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column
Actually, I have had enough. So should you have had enough. The time has come for real discontent, or there will be no end to our mistreatment and humiliation by this Government.
To call these people incompetent would be to pay them an over-generous compliment. We shall see in a minute what might be a better word.
This is not personal grievance. By great good fortune, I managed a swift holiday a few weeks ago, and was not caught by any sudden ...

PETER HITCHENS: Should the woman who said the IRA had a right to kill children really be a Baroness?
This is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column
I once applied to be a peer. This was not because I wanted to be known as Baron Hitchens, but because I thought it might be possible to do some good in the House of Lords, where the brutal and rigid party machines do not bully members into line the way they do in the Commons.
The Government of the day said it would appoint a small number of Peoples Peers, the sort of people who might not normally get in.
I filled in a long form expl...
