I thought I would re-post this discussion of the recent history of Crimea, more than five years after I first wrote it . I have made some minor changes to the original, first published on February 21, 2015.

 

All right, I admit it, it���s not that brief. I didn���t have time to shorten it. But what follows is a condensed history of the argument about who should control Crimea, one which still rages and which (as usual) is not as simple as politicians like to claim it is.

There���s a lot that could be said about Prince Philip���s funeral last Saturday, which for the moment I feel it better not to say, as it might be seen as an intrusion on a very private occasion.

At last we are to get out of Afghanistan, a country to which we should never have sent a single soldier. I am still full of fury at the shallow and ignorant politicians of all the main parties who sent young men and women into that futile war, to die or to be maimed, for absolutely no purpose.

But as this long-overdue moment arrives, a frantic lobby in this country and in the USA wants to get us into a new and equally pointless war against Russ...

The sight of police closing down a church service is one of the worst moments of this national panic.
