PETER HITCHENS: It really is time to scrap the police and start again
This is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column
How does a person such as Wayne Couzens, a known drug user with an unconcealed taste for extreme pornography, become a police officer in the first place? How did he remain one? How is it that when this questionable figure was caught on camera exposing his private parts, nobody even followed it up?
How has what used to be the most civilised and subtle police force in the world lost the sense to sack such a person? How has it, at the same ti...

The Day of the Nitwits: Remember the Triffids? Well, the Green zealots are nearly as dangerous, argues PETER HITCHENS
This is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column

PETER HITCHENS: Holding the handrail won't kill you - but the Covid Hezbollah might!
This is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column
How very sad that people travelling on the London Underground are tumbling down escalators in greater numbers because they are afraid to grasp the handrail.
They fear that they will become infected, fall ill and perhaps die. But instead they fall and are injured or even killed.
As far as I know the evidence that anyone will catch Covid by touching the escalator rail on the London Underground is scanty, to put it mildly. But the evidence that i...
Reflections on the Threepenny Bit (revised and re-posted)
While going through an old chest of drawers I recently came across an old twelve-sided threepenny bit. Most people dont remember these coins, but to me they were once part of daily life. One of them would once have bought you a national newspaper or a very small chocolate bar. Technically, they were worth a little more than one of the decimal pennies (always known scornfully as pee) which were introduced during that year of revolution, 1971. The ythreepenny bit was a dead thing when I f...
