PETER HITCHENS: Freedom for all means freedom for nasty people
This is Peter Hitchens Mail on Sunday column
Today I need to defend a person I do not much like. I will explain why I do not like him in a moment, but that is not the important bit.
What matters is this: if the Government can just reach out and ruin a mans life, without any need of a fair hearing or a guilty verdict, then we do not live in a free country. This is what has just happened to the video blogger Graham Phillips.

My new column for The Lamp Magazine, on telephones: 'Dialling the Moon'
Call me an appeaser if you like. But n that case you'll have to call Churchill an appeaser too. Full text of my Ukraine article
As I am now about to be called an appeaser, I will point out that I am in good company. The biggest appeaser in modern British history was Winston Churchill, who handed Eastern Europe to slavery and oppression at the hands of Stalin at Yalta in 1945, in return for keeping the grisly monster out of Western Europe. It is not polite to mention it, even now. But it is so. Churchill did not especially want to do this, but he did, because the alternative - an unending war we might well have lost - was...
