Steven (born Stephen) Tracy Byington was an intellectual, translator, proofreader, amateur mountaineer, and individualist anarchist. He graduated cum laude from the University of Vermont in 1891, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa (ΦΒΚ) Honor Society and was considered a master of at least twelve languages, including classical languages. He served for 32 years as clerk of the Ballard Vale Congregational Church, where he would bring his Bible translations to the Bible Class so the members could read and comment on them. His life's work, The Bible in Living English, completed before his death, was first published posthumously by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of New York. ...more
