American writer, lawyer and assassin of president Garfield.

He tried to get in at the University of Michigan but failed the entrance exam. In 1860 he joined the utopian religious community Oneida.

In 1877 he wrote a theological book called "The Truth".

Guiteau's interest turned to politics. He wrote a speech in support of Ulysses S. Grant called "Grant vs. Hancock".

In 1881 he assassinated president James A. Garfield.
