Comparing YSL & L'Oreal Burgundy Mascaras | Jennifer L. Scott
The readers of The Daily Connoisseur give me the best recommendations. A few years ago, a reader suggested I try the YSL Faux Cils mascara in burgundy. It was love at first use and that has been my favorite mascara ever since. The only thing I don't love about the YSL mascara is the price. The mascara generally sells anywhere between $27 and $32. When I visit Sephora, I usually purchase two of them, and that carries a hefty price tag.

I was really excited when I heard from a few readers recently that L'Oreal put out their own burgundy mascara, with a much more affordable price tag. In today's video, I'm comparing the two mascaras and give you my thoughts. Does the L'Oreal mascara make a good dupe for the YSL? Find out in today's video.
I applied the L'Oreal Voluminous Primer Mascara first. This step really helps to make the mascara last and appear thicker on the lashes.
[image error] [image error]
Then I applied the L'Oreal Paris Voluminous mascara in deep burgundy.
[image error] [image error]
I compare this duo with my favorite YSL Faux Cils mascara in burgundy, which is an excellent mascara, but also very pricey.
[image error] [image error]
After comparing the two, I am very impressed with the L'Oreal version. I wore the two mascaras on a very hot day when I spent a lot of time outside and neither one of them crumbled or smeared. For anyone looking for a more affordable alternative to the YSL mascara, this makes an excellent dupe.
I hope you enjoy today's video.

Comment of the Week
Angela B. writes, "I have a Bachelor's degree in Communication and a Master's in Business and can tell you how important it is to have this discussion. The use of social media is more often times than not, a form of communication that people use to "frame" their lives in such a way they appear to be more ____________________ than what they really are. Fill in the blank - well off, well traveled, successful at parenting, educated, well liked, admired for their looks, etc. - when in fact, they are no better than anyone else. Bottom line - the beauty of our lives lies in the journey, the successes AND failures, the joys AND the sorrows, the triumphs AND the struggles - it is our ability to recognize that value and treasure each and every moment that results in true happiness and contentment. Each journey is unique and above all valuable...joy should come not in having others applaud yours, but in lifting others up and cheering them on through the difficult times."
Hi Angela, I really enjoyed your perspective on last week's social media video. I couldn't agree more!
Thank you for joining me today. I would love to know if you've tried L'Oreal's mascara. Have you heard of any other burgundy mascaras on the market? Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.

Mapp and Lucia Book Club LIVE
Hello dear readers,
Thank you for joining me for the next installment of the Mapp and Lucia book club. We had so much to get to and I had a wonderful time chatting about the next two books in the series, Lucia in London and Mapp and Lucia. I apologize that this livestream was plagued with technical difficulties again. We had trouble with audio as well as picture (I look quite squashed and blurry), but overall we did get to chat about both of the books. I hope you enjoy the discussion in today's video. I promise to work on my livestreaming skills and will hopefully improve them for next time! :)
[image error] [image error]
The video of the Live Chat is above. If you were unable to make it live, you can simply watch the chat here or on YouTube. I hope you enjoy it and would love to hear your additional comments on all of the points that were made.

As we close the next section of the book club, I would love to know... Who is your favorite character in the series? Who is the most despicable? What was your favorite part in each book? What were your least favorite parts? Let us know in the comment section, and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on The Daily Connoisseur.
We will continue the book club with the next two (and final) books in the series, Worshipful Lucia and Trouble for Lucia.
[image error] [image error]
I will give you plenty of time to read the next two books and will most likely discuss them in the new year. Until then... *Au Reservoir!*

Caldrea Sea Salt + Neroli | Natural Home with Jennifer
In today's Natural Home with Jennifer, I'm reviewing the luxury cleaning line, Caldrea - specifically their countertop and linen spray in sea salt neroli.

Caldrea's products are naturally derived and safe to use. They infuse aromatherapy into their catalogue of cleaning and home products. Sea salt neroli is arguably their most popular scent. It's a strong scent that lingers, so if you do not like fragrance in your cleaning products, you might not like this one. However, if you do like home fragrance, this scent is truly wonderful.
The sea salt neroli evokes memories of the Mediterranean shore. It's salty and citrusy and lovely.

Caldrea's Countertop Spray - Easy and hard working, this quick spray uses a special vegetable protein extract to make odors vanish from the kitchen or bath. Safe and effective on any non-porous surface including natural stone.
- Safe and effective on any non-porous surface including natural stone
- Contains vegetable protein extract, which is a natural odor neutralizer
- Free of Phthalates, Glycol Solvents, Chlorine, Formaldehyde, Artificial Colors
- Plant-derived ingredients
Caldrea sea salt neroli linen and room spray is free of artificial colors, parabens, animal derived ingredients, formaldehyde.
Freshen a room with Caldrea Sea Salt Neroli Linen and Room Spray. Mist laundry on the line, pre-iron or post-dryer. Wake up sheets, pillows and blankets. This versatile essential oil spray is safely used to create a signature scent everywhere or anywhere.
I like to use the linen spray on laundry, in the car, and specifically on our laundry basket that holds our kitchen cloths, which can quickly gain a bad odor. I spray shirts before ironing them. I also spray it in the air in conjunction with the countertop spray when I clean the kitchen. If I do this at night, the kitchen smells so good in the morning.
I have never seen Caldrea in a store (please let us know if you have), but you can find it online at Amazon. It is less expensive on Grove Collaborative, which is where I purchased mine.
Grove Collaborative always gives me great deals to share with new and existing customers and
Grove's August promotion is here!

New customers get the following for free when you spend $20
Mrs. Meyer's hand soap
Mrs. Meyer's dish soap
Mrs. Meyer's multi-surface spray
Grove hand sanitizer spray
Grove walnut scrubber sponges
Anyone who spends $39 with Grove will be receiving a Grove cleaning caddy automatically added to their cart.
Existing customers receive a free set of walnut scrubber sponges.
(valid while supplies last)
*With Grove you have the option to get your products by subscription, or turn off auto-shipments and place orders as needed.
I hope you enjoy today's review of Caldrea sea salt neroli. I would love to know... have you tried the Caldrea spray? Have you tried any of their other scents?
I'll see you on Monday for the Mapp and Lucia book club LIVE at 11am pacific time. Have a wonderful weekend!

3 Clutter-Clearing Tips | MADAME CHIC Method
I'm sharing three clutter-clearing tips, Madame Chic-style, in today's video.

This video is a collaboration with A Better Life with Flylady Kat, who has a wonderful YouTube channel that encourages viewers to keep on top of their homes. You can check out Kat's three clutter-clearing tips here.
I'm bringing it back-to-basics in today's video and discussing my first book, Lessons from Madame Chic.

Since living with Madame Chic and her family, I have derived my clutter-clearing methods from them. I was amazed that their home had no clutter. Ever! There was never a day when the side table got out-of-hand, or someone needed to sort through the pile of mail on the entryway desk. Random items didn't accumulate on the dining room table. When an object needed to be dealt with, it was dealt with swiftly and put away in its proper place. The Chic family led very disciplined lives and this is the foundation for living in a clutter-free home.
Here is the abridged version of my three clutter-clearing tips. For expanded thoughts on all of these topics, be sure to watch my video.
Clutter-clearing tip #1: Embrace structured and disciplined living. Clearing clutter is an on-going, everyday process. The main idea here is prevention. If you live a structured and disciplined life at home, you prevent clutter form even forming because everything is put away and dealt with properly. This tip is truly for every member of the household, not just the mother. Otherwise, mom will just be running around picking up after everyone and all will be frustrated.
Clutter-clearing tip #2: Manage your everyday items. This goes hand-in-hand with disciplined living. Our everyday items need a home and should never be put anywhere other than their place. Clear your cluttered cupboards and drawers to create room to place your everyday items.
Clutter-clearing tip #3: Enjoy keeping your home! If you enjoy keeping your home, you will relish taking care of it and not let it get out of hand. Of course, we all go through seasons of life where we will get behind on the housework (I share a story about this in today's video), but generally, if you can keep an exuberance and a joie de vivre with regard to housekeeping, you will be on top of the clutter situation.

The Trouble with Social Media | Teatime with Jennifer
Today's Teatime with Jennifer discusses a topic I've been wanting to address for awhile: the trouble with social media.

There are, of course, many good points to social media. It's a great way to promote your business. It's a wonderful way to stay connected to loved ones who live far away. It's a way to discuss current events and take the pulse of what people really think. There are many other benefits as well.
But what is the trouble with social media? Social media changes the way that we think and even act. It promotes envy and narcissism. It pulls us out of the present moment. Instead of enjoying the moment, we often feel that we need to share it. Social media changes the way we think about others, often for the worse. It is highly addictive and robs us of our time, making us less efficient. There are, of course, many other problems. I touch on many of these problems in today's video. I would love to know what you think...

I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am now following you on YouTube. You are an inspiration for me to help me reorganise my life now that my three children have grown and left home. I am starting with my clothing closet which has become ridiculously over full. You have given me a new purpose and I am very grateful for all the work and effort you do in communicating to other women of all ages around the world in helping us. Thank you."

Grove Collaborative Orange + Rosemary Cleaning Concentrates 3-Pack Review | Natural Home with Jennifer
I hope you have enjoyed all of the beauty posts this week on The Daily Connoisseur. I had so much fun sharing my favorite summer hair tutorials with you. In today's Natural Home with Jennifer, we are veering from beauty and getting back to cleaning. I'm reviewing Grove Collaborative's innovative cleaning concentrates in today's video.

I'm a really big fan of these cleaning concentrates. Grove sell a 3-pack that includes a multi-surface cleaner, a tub and tile cleaner, and a glass cleaner. They also sell each individual cleaner as a 2-pack.

The tub and tile cleaner works well for regular tub cleaning. If you have a bigger job to do with your tub, like a heavy ring around it, you would probably need something stronger.
The multi-surface cleaner is excellent. It cleans the countertops well and provides that delightfully subtle orange + rosemary essential oil scent.

The glass cleaner was the first one I tried a few months ago. I actually ordered this one first before ordering the 3-pack. At first when you spray and wipe your mirrors and windows, the surface is cloudy, then turns into a really nice streak-free shine. Not only does it clean well, but the orange + rosemary essential oils make this spray smell like a wonderful spa.

Here is the description of the cleaning concentrates from Grove's website:
Our ultra-effective concentrates provides serious cleaning power without any harsh chemicals. We’ve included only the best, toxin-free cleaning agents and highest quality essential oils for exceptional performance.
All Purpose Cleaner: Use this endlessly versatile spray on ceramic, chrome, concrete, granite, stainless steel and more. Not recommended for use on aluminum, brass and wood.
Glass Cleaner: From windows to mirrors, this product is perfect for use on all glass surfaces. Not recommended for use on wood.
Tub & Tile Cleaner: Cleaner tubs and tiles await! Use this cleaner on ceramic tile, porcelain, stainless steel, fiberglass and more. Not recommended for use on marble or brass. For extra power, let sit for 1 minute after spraying, then scrub or wipe clean.
If you are trying Grove Collaborative for the first time, new customers will receive a Mrs. Meyer's dish soap, Mrs. Meyer's hand soap, and Mrs. Meyer's hand lotion + free shipping and VIP trail when they spend $20. Existing Grove customers will always receive a walnut scrubber sponge set for free. Grove Collaborative give you the option of having a subscription service where they send you cleaning products monthly, or you can turn off auto-shipments and order on an as-needed basis, which is what I do. I tend to order from them around once a month, but I find that I need different things each time I order, depending on what I'm out of.
I hope you enjoy the review in today's video. I would love to know... have you ever tried the Grove concentrates? Do you have any natural cleaning products you'd like to recommend or that you'd like me to review? Let us know in the comment section.
Have a wonderful weekend! I'll see you on Monday.

Easy Chignon Updo Hair Tutorial | Jennifer L. Scott
I have another simple hair tutorial for you today. This one is a chic chignon that is really easy to do. It builds upon the half-up tutorial you learned on Tuesday.

Pull your hair half back. Take the top portion of hair and twist it to the right, while simultaneously pushing it up to create volume on the crown. Secure with bobby pins.

Take a hair tie and create a low ponytail at the base of the head. You can leave it as a ponytail, or if you'd like to make an updo, you can create a ponytail but not pull the hair all the way through. Wrap the bottom strands around the bun you have created and then pin the rest of the bun into place against your head in a manner that looks attractive with bobby pins. Once you are happy with your bun, spray with hairspray.

I use the Garnier Fructis sleek & style hair spray.
I hope you enjoy today's hair tutorial video. If you try this look and would like to share it with us, snap a picture for social media using the hashtag #dailyconnoisseur I would love to see your chic chignon!

Easy & Elegant Half-up Hair Tutorial | Jennifer L. Scott
Beauty week continues on The Daily Connoisseur with today's hair tutorial, which has been requested by a few ladies this summer. I've been wearing my hair in this style a lot recently. It's really easy to do, looks elegant, and is perfect for the summer months.

Simply pull the top half of your hair back. Twist the top portion of your hair to the right while simultaneously pushing it up to create volume in the crown. Pin with bobby pins. Set with hairspray. This is a beautiful summer look.

I use the Garnier Fructis hairspray in sleek & style. These bobby pins for brunettes are also great. I am also linking bobby pins for blondes. Try to match your hair color as best you can with the bobby pins so they hide into the hair.
I hope you enjoy the tutorial in today's video.

LONDONTOWN 9-Free Nail Polish Summer 2018 Swatches | Jennifer L. Scott
It's beauty week on The Daily Connoisseur! You will see four videos from me this week. Today, we're talking nail polish. On Tuesday and Thursday, I'm sharing requested hair tutorials, and on Friday we have a new Natural Home with Jennifer. I'm excited for a fun week with you on the blog!

I enjoy swatching the LONDONTOWN nail colors for you each season. Made in the USA, LONDONTOWN nail polishes have
Florium Complex enriching botanicals infused into their beautiful colors, which are also 9-free, cruelty-free, and vegan.
What does 9-free mean? It means that the polishes are free of 9 potentially harmful chemicals: formaldehyde, camphor, toluene, DBP (dibutyl pthalate and phthalates), formaldehyde resin, xylene, ethyl tosylamide, parabens, and lead.
Today, I'm swatching some of their prettiest summer colors for 2018.

Guilty Pleasure, a delightful cherry red

Amalfi Love, a cool blue

Briolette An iridescent lavender shade

Opal A shimmering lilac

Out of Office, a pastel pink

Summer Fling, a lovely shocking pink

Nail hardener and base coat, Gel Genius Top Coat, Strengthening Lacquer Remover
It was a delight to try out the summer shades for Londontown. I truly do love their polishes. Their lasting power is comparable to the major nail polish brands, without all of the nasty chemicals.
I would love to know which one is your favorite. I hope you enjoy today's video.
