The Chic Assignment, November 2020

Chic Assignment no. 1 Enjoy the music of William Grant Still (1895 - 1978) Serenade for Orchestra

William Grant Still was an American composer and conductor. He was the first African American conductor to conduct a symphony orchestra in the United States.
I have a wonderful performance from The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra of Still's Serenade for Orchestra. This is truly a delightful performance!
Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806 - 1861)

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an English poet of the Victorian era. She was one of Emily Dickinson's favorite poets. A framed portrait of Barrett Browning hung in the bedroom of Dickinson, whose life had been transfigured by the poetry of “that Foreign Lady.” (from Wikipedia). We are reading, A Flower in a Letter, today. I encourage you to read more of her poetry this month. Check out the resources I have below. We will learn more about Barrett Browning in the mid-month check-in. Here is a link to The Collected Poems of Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Elizabeth Barrett Browning on The Poetry Foundation.

What's for Dinner? Delicious Fall Meals from our Meal Plan | Family of 6

Welcome to a new Dinners of the Week video on The Daily Connoisseur. I'm sharing the highlights from our meal plan for the past two weeks in today's video.
You can find the printable recipes down below. I hope today's post gives you some great ideas for your family.
BBQ Lime Cod with Coconut Rice

This recipe was given to me by my neighbor who is an excellent cook. Her family is from Mexico and one afternoon she told me about this marinade her family love to put on fish that she has enjoyed since childhood. She explained that it was a combination of BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, and lime juice. I thought it sounded like an odd combination but she assured me it was delicious. They like this over fish and shrimp. My neighbor couldn't give me the exact recipe because she cooks from intuition, so I came up with my own, and it turned out so good. She was right!

I regularly make chicken pot pie during the fall and winter seasons. I've made this for you before on the channel as a freezer meal. Today I show you how I make one batch for dinner tonight and enough to freeze for a future meal. This time I use pre-made puff pastry, which is delicious and makes the pie easy to construct on a busy weeknight.
PrintChicken Pot PieYield: Makes one pie and enough for one extra freezer mealIngredients1 Tbs extra virgin olive oil1 large onion, choppedchopped carrots and celery (2- 3 cups total) 4 large chicken breastschicken brothSeason-all or other favorite seasoning1/2 cup butter1/2 cup flour3 to 4 cups reserved chicken broth chicken bouillon (optional) puff pastry InstructionsPlace the chicken in the slow cooker and pour chicken broth until covered. Cook on low for 8 hours. When the chicken is cooked, remove from the slow cooker (reserving the broth). Place the chicken in the Kitchen Aid mixer and beat until shredded. Meanwhile, brown the chopped onion, celery, and carrot in olive oil in a hot pan on medium heat until the vegetables are softened and browned. In large stock pot, melt the butter. Add the flour to create a roux and cook until the flour is incorporated in the butter and the floury taste has cooked off. Add 3 to 4 cups of chicken broth from the slow cooker (add bouillon, if desired for extra flavor). Cook until a thick sauce forms. Add the cooked vegetables and shredded chicken. Season with salt and pepper or your favorite seasoning (I like to use Season-All). Add half to a greased casserole or pie dish. Roll out a thawed puff pastry on a floured board. Place the pastry on top of the pie filling. Cut slits into the top of the pie and brush with egg wash. Cook at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes, or until the pastry is browned. Take the other half of the chicken filling and freeze for a future occasion. Enjoy. Spaghetti Bolognese

This is my mother's spaghetti bolognese recipe... and my mom is the best cook ever. She cooks from intuition too so I've had to guess at the exact elements of this recipe to make it just like hers. It's not quite as good as hers, but she approves. The kids love this dish especially, and it's great served with garlic bread and a side salad. The plate featured in this photo is Spode Woodland china DCHOL10 for 10% off (some exclusions apply).

Add canned tomatoes and sauce to the pan. Add Italian herbs and simmer for a minimum of 30 minutes. Add a half a cup of water if the sauce cooks down too much. Air Fryer Fish Tacos

This was my first time making fish tacos with the air fryer. And while I messed up the order of the fish batter, they still turned out great! I highly recommend these delicious fish tacos. I looked up the recipe on how to fry fish from the air fryer handbook that came with my machine. I added the taco seasoning to the flour to make this more appropriate for tacos.
Please note that all air fryers are different. Please follow the instructions on your air fryer. I have the Cosori model in white.

Taco Pizza

While we are on the subject of tacos, why not take it a step further and make a taco pizza? :) This recipe is from All the King's Morsels and rather than create a recipe card for you here, I am going to link to the original recipe. Kristen's food blog is so good, you should check out the rest of her recipes too. I altered the recipe slightly to use what I had on hand.
Carne Asada Burritos

I guess we were all feeling like Mexican food this week! The last meal featured here is carne asada burritos. I am not providing a recipe card here because I do not have a carne asada marinade to share with you. We buy our carne asada steak already prepared from Trader Joe's. Ben grills it on the BBQ and slices it into thin strips. I fry the floured tortillas until crispy. We top with the steak, homemade guacamole, salsa, shredded lettuce, and cheese. I served this with a side of steamed corn, served with butter and season-all.
I hope you enjoyed the dinners this week. If you make any of the meals, please come back and let us know how you enjoyed them.

The Art of the Fall Table Setting | Thanksgiving Tablescape Ideas | Homemaking Day in the Life

Welcome to a unique homemaking day in the life. Today we are exploring the art of the fall table setting. I'm sharing an inviting way to style a Thanksgiving or fall table for an elegant, but casual dinner party.
This video is in collaboration with Riverbend Home to feature the beautiful Spode Woodland Line, which are the ultimate fall dishes. Riverbend Home have generously given us a discount code: DCHOL10 for 10% off (some exclusions apply)

When coming up with a table-setting plan, I like to look at beautiful books for inspiration. My favorite resources are the Hoffman Media books from Victoria Magazine. Today, I take inspiration from Victoria Magazine and The Art of Tea.

I'm working with the Spode Woodland China for this autumn table-setting. I have always admired the Spode Woodland collection, but could never find a comprehensive and full collection online. Riverbend Home carries the full line in their Thanksgiving shop. DCHOL10 for 10% off (some exclusions apply)

The chief aim for an autumnal table is to create a cozy atmosphere through colors, textures, and layers. These elements would be excellent for a Thanksgiving table, special fall dinner, or other more substantial afternoon tea.
I hope you enjoy today's video and that it gives you table-setting inspiration for your Thanksgiving table.

The Chic Assignment Check-in: October, 2020

Welcome to The Chic Assignment Check-in. I am excited to dive into each assignment with you in more detail. Let's begin.
Chic Assignment no. 1 The Phantom of the Opera I hope you enjoyed listening to The Phantom of the Opera this month. I have provided a 1988 Tony Award performance from the great Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman that is so riveting and nostalgic. I know during this pandemic shut-down I have missed going to the theatre and I look forward to returning one day.
During the check-in we are learning about Andrew Lloyd Webber and the history of The Phantom of the Opera. I hope you enjoy learning the brief history of this celebrated musical.
Chic Assignment no. 2 Enjoy the art of Gustave CaillebotteWe are studying French artist, Gustave Caillebotte this month. You can see his most famous paintings for free online. In the check-in, we learn more about his interesting, yet very short life.

In today's video I remark about the rejection of one of his most famous works, The Floor Scrapers, from the judges of the Salon of 1875. They deemed the painting to be vulgar because it depicted "common laborers". This strikes me as interesting because in the world of art there is nothing new under the sun. Artists of the past and artists of today (no matter what form your art takes) are judged by the "powers that be" on whether their art is acceptable. I've had this experience as a writer... it just goes to show that the big corporations don't always know what they are talking about. They deemed Caillebotte's, The Floor Scrapers, as vulgar, assuming that the public would not want to see laborers in action, but they were wrong. Just more motivation for artists to continue to create their work, despite the ignorant rejection of the establishment.
Check out the following two books for more on Gustave Caillebotte: Gustave Caillebotte: The Painter's Eye
Caillebotte: Painter and Patron of Impressionism

You can buy canvas reproductions of Gustave Caillebotte's paintings at Great Big Canvas

Chic Assignment no. 3 We have been focusing on presentable undergarments and sleepwear this month. I explored these subjects extensively in separate videos this month. You can watch the undergarment guide here, and the sleepwear guide here.
Chic Assignment no. 4 Enjoy cooking a new seasonal dish. For the final chic assignment we are enjoying seasonal cooking. I hope that my What's for Dinner? videos have been a motivating tool for you to meal plan and incorporate seasonal recipes into your cooking routine. I have another one coming out soon for more inspiration.

The Case for Presentable Sleepwear + The Season's Best Styles | Chic Pajamas for Women + Budget Dupes

Welcome back to The Daily Connoisseur. In our last post, we discussed why it's important to wear presentable undergarments. Today we are discussing sleepwear. Presentable sleepwear is a passion of mine. I love pretty pajamas! If you strive to look presentable in public everyday, you should also strive to look presentable at home... even if you live alone and no one sees you.
Today, I'm sharing my seasonal sleepwear guide with you and have pulled the season's latest styles from my favorite companies. All of the sleepwear I am showcasing is high-quality, high-end sleepwear, mainly from tried and tested brands that I am familiar with and have had excellent experiences with.
Budget Sleepwear
If you are on a budget, however, and these do not fit in your price range, I did a lot of research and found nearly identical budget dupes. You can find all of those in the budget sleepwear section of my Amazon store.
How to invest in sleepwearHow do you start to collect and invest in high-end sleepwear and still stay on budget? Because high-quality sleepwear can last for years, just start your collection by purchasing one a year. I generally allot for an update once a year and have done so for years. If you take care of your sleepwear by washing and storing it correctly, your sleepwear will last a long time. There will come a time, however, when you will need to throw your sleepwear away (or donate it if it is in usable condition). Make sure you read those cues and act accordingly. Don't hold onto sleepwear past its prime.
The latest styles... which is your favorite?
Let's take a look at some of the brands featured in today's video. Perhaps they can give you inspiration for the type of sleepwear you'd like to wear on a nightly basis. You can find my slipper recommendations in my Amazon store as well.

The Lilysilk chic pajama set is their most popular, bestselling sleepwear item. Made of 100% 22 Momme Mulberry Silk, with contrast piping and mother-of-pearl buttons, this pajama set is luxurious and would make an excellent gift. Daily12 for 12% off

Cami NYC is a luxury clothing line that is known for their beautiful lacy camisoles. They also have a capsule collection of silk sleepwear. This is sleepwear is extreme luxury and on the higher price range for those with a large budget. The silk is exquisite and feels so soft on the skin.

The Fleur't Iconic Chemise is not only beautifully constructed, but washable, wearable, and so comfortable. I've been a customer of Fleur't for decades as I love their iconic boy short. Their sleepwear is equally delightful. FALLBEAUTY20 (20% off) It's a great idea when thinking about building a sleepwear collection to buy things in the same style family. The robe, long nightgown, and chemise all go together nicely.

Rya Soleada Gown and Robe collection JEN4RYA 10% off This gown and robe is available in gold and ivory in lustrous poly-charmeuse for easy care and wrinkle-free traveling. The Rya gowns are so unique because of their intricate embroidery details. The Rya robes and gowns are machine washable even though they look like they are dry clean only. I had great success washing mine at home on delicate... This style is for ladies who like fancier things in life and want their sleepwear to be a bit more dramatic... think Ginger Rogers.

Why You Should Wear Presentable Undergarments + The Season's Best Styles

It's that time of year again... our bi-yearly reminder to wear presentable undergarments. While many of us are attuned to the importance of decluttering other areas of our homes, we must not forget our undergarment drawers. Today's video will share tips and motivation on decluttering your undergarments and will provide resources for finding the best quality undergarments on the market.
Be sure to watch today's video for detailed discussions on how to de-clutter your undergarments and how to store them properly. I recommend this undergarment organizer from Amazon that is quite affordable.
Let's take a look at some of the excellent undergarments on the market...

We can't talk about undergarments without talking about leg wear... especially going into the fall/ winter season. The way I stay warm and stylish in my dresses has everything to do with leg wear and my favorite brand is definitely Hipstik. I like the lace top, how they don't ride down, and that the tights are of a very sturdy construction (very hard to snag).

What's for Dinner? Family of 6 Meal Plan | Delicious Fall Recipes

Welcome to a new What's for Dinner on The Daily Connoisseur. I believe that meal planning is a homemaker must and in today's video I share the highlights from my meal plan for the past two weeks. We make homemade Subway sandwiches, Salmon en Croûte, New England Clam Chowder, BBQ crock pot ribs, cheeseburgers, and creamy mushroom chicken. I hope you enjoy these delicious fall meals.
I like to write down the meal plans for the week to keep me on task. This is the meal planning notebook I like to use.

Oh, how I love subway sandwiches! We enjoy making them at home and they are just as good, if not better, than the kind you can get from the deli or sub restaurants.

Salmon en Croûte is a decidedly fancy dish, but is so easy to make. I hope you enjoy this excellent recipe. The best time to make this is when you have leftover creamed spinach. If you do not have leftover creamed spinach, you can make a simple spinach mixture by combining the following:
Creamed Spinach: Sauté 20 oz of spinach in a lightly oiled pan until fully cooked. Combine 4oz cream cheese, 1/4 cup heavy cream, 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, and 1/8 cup shredded parmesan in the same pan the spinach was cooked in. Cook on low heat until the sauce is melted nicely. Once the sauce is warm and mixed together completely, add the cooked spinach and season with salt and pepper.
PrintSalmon en CroûteAuthor: Jennifer L. ScottAn elegant, yet simple dish that will "wow" your family and guests.Ingredients1 salmon filet (around 1 1/2 - 2 lbs)3-4 cups of prepared creamed spinach (leftovers work best here)1 sheet of thawed puff pastrysalt and pepperegg washInstructionsPreheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out your thawed puff pastry on a floured surface. Remove the skin from your salmon filet, if necessary. Season both sides with salt and pepper. Spread around 1 1/2 cups of creamed spinach on the puff pastry. Use cold, leftover creamed spinach here as it will be thicker and will stay in place. Place your salmon filet on top and top with the remaining creamed spinach. Brush the margins of the puff pastry with egg wash. Pull the puff pastry over the salmon until it is wrapped like an envelope. Turn the salmon filet around so the puff pastry seam is facing down. Lightly score the top of the pastry with a knife. Brush remaining egg wash on top. Bake in the oven for 20 - 25 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked and the puff pastry is golden brown. New England Clam Chowder is an elegant, yet hearty dish. This would be amazing served in a homemade bread bowl... I'll have to do that next time! I served this with a salmon, pomegranate, goat cheese salad. It was a knock-out meal. Ben and I loved it!
I'm trying out these beautiful, Aropeti placemats and napkins from John Robshaw. These are making an appearance in my holiday gift guide. PrintNew England Clam ChowderAuthor: Jennifer L. ScottIngredients4 strips of bacon3 carrots, chopped (or 3 ribs of celery... or both!)1 onion, chopped1 garlic clove, minced2 medium potatoes, cubed 1 cup water8 oz clam juice3 tsp chicken bouillon 1/2 tsp chopped thyme (fresh or dried)1/3 cup all-purpose flour2 cups of half and half (divided)1 can of clam sauce or 2 smaller cans of chopped clamspepper for tasteInstructionsBrown the bacon until crisp in a large stock pot. Remove the bacon and reserve the fat. Brown the chopped onion and garlic in the bacon fat for 2 minutes. Add the sliced carrot or celery and continue to cook for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes, water, clam juice, bouillon, thyme. Simmer until the potatoes are tender, around 15 to 20 minutes. Stir the flour into one cup of the half and half to create a thickener. Pour into the soup. Pour the remaining half and half in as well as the clam sauce or clams. If you do not have half and half, use one cup of cream and one cup of whole milk. Crumble bacon on top of each individual serving. We have either cheeseburgers or hot dogs once a week in our home. They are easy, crowd-pleasing meals and never really get old. Our cheeseburger recipes vary, but usually Ben grills the hamburger patties on the grill and tops them with cheddar cheese. I then lay out an assortment of toppings on a tray (I'm using this beautiful recycled marble slab from John Robshaw) and everyone can assemble their own burger to their tastes. This time we are using Hawaiian Sweet Roll buns, which were delightful. The toppings we used this time were the following: sliced beefsteak tomatoes, sliced onions, romaine lettuce, and sliced pickles.

I made slow cooker BBQ ribs, which couldn't be easier... so there will be no recipe card for this one. I placed about 3 lbs of baby back pork ribs in the slow cooker and topped with 2 cups of bottled BBQ sauce (we like Sweet Baby Ray's). Then I cooked the ribs on low for 8 hours. For side dishes, I made baked potatoes. I rubbed the cleaned potatoes with olive oil and sprinkled the skin with Moton's Season All. Then I baked them for one hour at 350 degrees F. I topped the potatoes with butter, sour cream, and chopped chives. Cornbread and mixed veggies were also served. This was easy, hearty, and delicious!

I created this creamy mushroom chicken inspired by the delightful Marry-Me Chicken a few weeks ago. This was delicious and a wonderful fall meal. I served the chicken with roasted acorn squash. To roast, cut the squash in half and take out the seeds. Place in a Bain Marie, top with butter and maple syrup, and place in the oven and roast for 1 hour at 400 degrees.
PrintCreamy Mushroom ChickenAuthor: Jennifer L. ScottIngredients4 -5 chicken breasts lemon pepper seasoning (enough to season your chicken breasts)1 Tbs olive oil1 Tbs butter1 packet of baby Bella mushrooms, sliced2 cloves garlic, minced2 tbs thyme, chopped1/2 cup chicken broth1/2 cup heavy creamInstructionsSeason the chicken on both sides with lemon pepper. Fry in a hot oven-proof pan with the butter and olive oil until both sides are brown... 3 - 4 minutes per side. Remove the chicken from the pan and cover with aluminum foil. Place the mushrooms in the same pan and cook until they are brown and soft, around 10 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. Add the chicken broth, cream, and thyme and continue to cook until the sauce thickens. Add the chicken breasts back to the skillet. Place in a preheated oven (350 degrees F) for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked through. Serve the chicken with extra sauce on top. One Hour of Cozy Fall Cleaning | Calming & Therapeutic Homemaking

They say homemaking is the new wellness... and today I have created another motivational hour-long cleaning video to encourage you in your daily homemaking tasks.
Follow me for several days as I do daily and seasonal homemaking tasks around the home. The video shares the therapeutic sounds of cleaning along with a beautifully curated soundtrack. All of the music is copyright-free from Epidemic Sounds.
