November into December (Contest)

November

Work-related:

I completed three sets of edits for other authors.I’ve been working with Burn: A Boys Behaving Badly Anthology on loglines and getting some administrivia out of the way. I wanted to begin edits, but I am admittedly working too slow!

Health-related:

I discontinued my immunotherapy and the hormone-blocker my doctor hoped would halt the progression of my disease. My cancer marker tests show that despite the immunotherapy, my cancer is resurging. I underwent a PET scan and will review the results with the doctor tomorrow. More news to come, I’m sure.

Happiness-related:

Despite the dire news about my cancer’s likely reappearance, I feel fine. The occasional aches and pains aren’t “troublesome” and entirely manageable with pain meds and my insomnia medicine. This month, I attended the annual potluck dinner at my art guild. It was lovely to share a meal with friends. The girls and I went to the movies to see Wicked: For Good. I sat crying for the second part of the movie. Big softie here. We all loved the experience and afterward headed to Red Lobster for a meal. Perfect day.I created some art this month! Not much, mind you. Here are a few pieces.

December

 Ignition

For work-related, I plan:

(This is a repeat!) To work with the authors whose stories will appear in Burn  to edit their stories. I’ll work on the cover art and get a pre-order ready for readers to reserve their copies. I’ll also work on my short story, which will be included in the collection. To write some pages. I’m not even putting out there that I’ll finish the dang book, but I will attempt to add pages to Ignition !To work on edits for one author.

For health-related, I plan:

To meet with my oncologist to review the PET Scan results and see where my cancer is emerging now.To begin a new, targeted chemotherapy called ENHERTU. The plan is that I’ll stay on chemotherapy until July of next year if my blood tests show that the cancer is being batted down.To continue to focus on the things I can control to help myself feel better! I’ll rest when I need to and get in some more light exercise.

For happiness-related, I plan:

To enjoy all the holiday events my dd has lined up for the family. We have little parties or gift-giving things going on throughout the month of December. To create more art.To enjoy Christmas day with my family! I have only one gift left to buy!Contest

Comment on anything you’ve read in this post. Tell me what you’re doing to make yourself happier and healthier, or tell me what you plan to read in December

Like I said, comment on anything for a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card!

Our Family’s Thanksgiving Adventure… (Contest)

Let me tell you about my family’s Thanksgiving Day…

The mealzzz were fantastic, starting early around noon with snacking throughout the day and evening. All the traditional entrees…turkey and ham, etc. We watched a couple of holiday movies together: the Last Holiday (Queen Latifa and LL Cool J, y’all—an annual watch for us!) and then we looked for a cheesy, Hallmark-style Christmas movie, which we found on Netflix—The Knight Before Christmas. The second movie had us groaning in places, but it hit the right level of cheesiness. So enjoyable!

Around 9 PM, the 21-year-old said to her mom, “You know, my water pressure in my bathroom has been off the past couple of days…” The rest of us in the house didn’t notice so much because we’ve been doing a mountain of laundry and dishes lately, and the machines use a lot of water.

My daughter and the 21-year-old headed out to search for what my daughter just knew was the problem—a broken pipe. Sure enough, she found a very drowned spot of dirt not too far from the house. Of course, her handy husband was on duty (he’s with the local PD), so it was up to her to fix the problem despite the fact is was dark AF and the temperature was right at 37 degrees outside.

First, we didn’t know how to shut off the water coming into the property at the front gate. He had to run in from town, and it took about five minutes for him to shut off the water and show the girls how to turn it back on. Then my daughter, along with the 21-year-old, began digging, hoping they were looking in the right spot. They were in their oldest pants and T-shirts, muck boots and tennis shoes, with me shining lights on them so they could see where they were digging. They broke two shovels in the process. And it was a really funny sight in retrospect, because here’s my 41-year-old, redheaded daughter, a normal-sized 5’7″, and her teeny-tiny 5’2″ daughter, slamming shovels into the dirt, then jumping on them to get them to dig through gravel, dirt, and big fat roots.

That’s about a 4-foot trench, and just the start. See the shovel propped against the fence? That was our first casualty. I love that the 21-year-old was out there in pink velour joggers and muck boots.

They found a pipe, but we couldn’t be sure we had found the right point in the pipe. So, the 21-year-old and the 16-year-old went with the flashlights to the water thingie at the end of the driveway with a “hump-backed” set of plyers (their definition) to turn on the water so we could double-check that we’d found the leaking, broken part of the pipe. My daughter and I heard much cussing, because, of course, black widow spiders inhabit that water hole thingie, and they didn’t want to drop the plyers into the nest, but of course they did. I don’t know how they retrieved them without being bitten (the spiders might not have been very active due to the cold), but they turned on the water. Seconds later, a geyser of water shot up, spraying my dd and I while we immediately shouted, “Turn off the fucking water!” Our neighbors must have loved us.

This doesn’t look impressive, but that’s a two-foot-deep trench, and the water sprayed six feet in the air.

We found the break, but had to continue excavation around the pipe so my dd could attempt the repair. There were many phone calls and shared videos with the handy hubby, where my wet and miserable, but very determined daughter, described the problems and had to search in his man-cave shed for pipe, “elbows,” couplings, glue, and pipe cutters, all the while cussing up a storm (it’s the Irish in her), which I am sure his cop buddies got to hear (it likely made their night).

This was the problem pipe. The crack is square in the middle of the elbow at the center of the screen. No disses about the old PVC pipe. It was laid in the 70s or 80s.

At last she had everything sitting beside the hole and cut out the section of broken pipe that had two elbows, constructed the replacement, but then couldn’t get the damn thing to fit with the existing pipe.

So, hubby calls in to dispatch to say he has to head home for a few on his break. Ten minutes after he arrived, he had the pipe in place. He’s the hero, right? LOL. No, those badass girls of mine, covered in muck, and determined to fix the problem because there was no way they were going to bed without showers, did ALL the heavy lifting. I just held the flashlights, but it was fun to witness how stubbornly and well they worked together to take care of the problem. And all that was completed in just over two hours.

They took breaks to shower the muck off and warm up their bodies, then the 21-year-old’s boyfriend arrived after work to help the girls fill in the hole. My daughter thought it was hysterical. He was so sincere and ready to help, but had on lovely jeans and a pretty, shiny pair of boots that he swore were his “work boots.” I think she fell a little bit in love with him. He might be a keeper.

But again, the hard work was done by the girls! I can rest easy knowing they can take care of themselves.

Anna Taylor Sweringen/Michal Scott: Mary Hood Shaw – Unidentified No Longer (Contest)

The William David Hassler Photograph Collection in the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library of the New York Historical Society contains a photo labeled, “unidentified African American woman.” The same photo however hung in the Flushing branch of the Queensboro Public Library system for years and has turned out to be that of Mary Hood Shaw, one of Flushing’s most illustrious and philanthropic African American residents. The Society created an Instagram reel you can view here:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFoiXvTRb2p/

Mary was born in Pennsylvania around 1852 to Lewis A. and Sarah A. Hood. By the time she was twenty-one Mary had teaching experience in South Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, and Delaware. In 1873, she continued her teaching career in Flushing, Queens. Four years later she became “head teacher” of the School for African American Children in Flushing. In 1888, she became its principal until she resigned in 1894. As with other women of her era Mary took part in social and educational activism outside of work as evidenced by her participation in the Queens County Teachers Institute.

In December of 1874, Mary married John William A. Shaw a journalist, politician and an African Methodist Episcopal minister. Their daughter Ethel followed in Mary’s footsteps and was a much-beloved teacher at the Tuskegee Institute. Ethel died sometime between 1892 and 1903.

When Mary died at the age of 53 in March 1905, she left Tuskegee more than $35,000 (approximately $1.3 million in today’s dollars) to establish a scholarship fund for female students in Ethel’s memory. The gift made national news for being the largest bequest ever made by an African American to the Institute. She also left $1,000 to the Flushing Free Public Library, the library in which her photograph hung, $1,000 to the Hospital and Dispensary of the Town of Flushing and $2,000 to St. Philips Parish Home in Manhattan.

In 2018, the Queens Public Library unveiled a portrait of Mary they commissioned from Eddie Abrams, a local artist, which will be on permanent display at QPL’s Flushing branch. You can see the portrait here: https://qns.com/2018/02/queens-library-honors-19th-century-flushing-philanthropist/

Once again in an age where the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer seems to be the order of the day, the example of Mary’s philanthropy outshines the sun. Her life is another example of the need to fight narratives that try to foist a single story on the lives and histories of African American women. I live in hope my blogposts aid in that battle.

“The $5.00 Kiss of Life” by Michal Scott
Inside First Response:  A Boys Behaving Badly Anthology

First Response: A Boys Behaving Badly Anthology

Trapped by the small-town conventions imposed on her, a pastor’s spinster daughter finds rescue in the town bad boy’s very public kiss…

Excerpt:

Remember what it says in Matthew: Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? Answer: No one. So stop worrying. Worry lines don’t suit you. You know my bottom line: the unexamined life isn’t worth living, Bev.

But was the examined life worth dying for?

She sighed and opened her eyes. Loudspeakers placed on lampposts around the park filled the air with the fun-filled song Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Beverly buttoned the top button on her sweater, grateful the song was the only sign of snow in a surprisingly warm December. She looked around at all the fun going on.

She firmed her lips and gave herself a gentle chiding. “Think positive, Beverly. Find something in all of this holiday cheer to rescue you from your worrying.

She reached into her pocket, withdrew Lydia’s card and read its invitation again.

$5.00 and this card will get you a 10 second what-you-will kiss of life from Firefighter Rob Williams.

Well, no one could find fault with her if she did. After all it was for a worthy cause.

She headed toward the First Baptist’s Kiss For A Cause booth and Rob Williams’ lips.

Gabbi Grey: The Secret Sauce (Contest)

Hello, Delilah! Thank you for welcoming me here to share my new release! I hope you’ll bear with me as I explain the journey for this book.

A Daddy for Christmas 3: Lorcan is my third Daddy/puppy book.  When I began my writing career, I’d never heard of this kink.  Hell, only into my third year of reading gay romance did I come across this.  Now, I’d met puppies in my foray into the BDSM world in Vancouver — so I wasn’t unaware of this kink.  But I’d never seen it in action outside of a kink conference and the dungeon floor.

I’ve read “littles” books since — where one partner in the relationship regresses in some way — be it young adult down to infant. I met littles in my time in the kink community. Although curious, that concept didn’t speak to me.

Puppies did.  The idea of giving up total control to someone you trust.  Of being able to just chase balls, play rope, as well as getting scritches and belly rubs, appealed to me.

Most people are not going to understand that. Which is legitimate.  My kink is not your kink, and it’s certainly fine if you’re vanilla.

I continued along my writing journey, writing queer books, novellas, and short stories.  I’ve brought sapphic and gay stories to life (as well as MMF and FFM BDSM books under a different pen name).  I’ve expanded what I write to fit my interests.  I’ve lived my best life.

2024 was my year of hell, yes! Just about every project I was offered, I agreed to do. How could I not? I wanted to see what I could accomplish. (Over 800k words, 9 novels, 2 novellas, a pile of short stories, 6 audios, and 4 short fiction pieces…).  My only “no” was, interestingly, a littles series.

A friend approached me to write a Daddy book, and I connected instantly with the idea.  But a Daddy/puppy book?  That was fine with the organizers, and so I sat down and wrote A Daddy for Christmas 2: Foster.  Foster was my first multicultural book — a Black puppy and an Indian Daddy.

Readers LOVED Foster.  They continue to show tons of affection for Foster.  The reviews were lovely as clearly folks get what I was aiming for.  Naturally, when I was offered the chance to write a Daddy/puppy book for Pride, I nabbed that chance.  Puppy Pride was another multicultural book — this time flipping the ethnicities.  For the record — I have sensitivity readers who read the books and call me out on my errors.  Still, if I get something wrong, that’s on me.

And readers and reviewers have enjoyed Puppy Pride.  Foster and Jai — as puppies — have won the hearts of my fans.  Demetrius and Arnav have proven to be worthy Daddies.  There’s a lot of love and heart in these books.

Was I game to write a third book? You bet!  I was more organized this time.  While writing Puppy Pride, I wrote a character who intrigued me. I introduced him on the first page of the book and I went — oh, yeah, he’s getting a story.  I kept that in my mind as I wrote the book.  I just had to decide whether Cody was a puppy or a Daddy.  Pretty soon, that decision became clear.  In the epilogue of Puppy Pride, Cody walks into Club Kink on puppy night.  His boss spots him, and speculation arises as to why Cody might be in the club.

Close curtain.

That was my June book.  Then I had to sit down and write my Christmas book.  I had Cody and I also had Lorcan.  I wrote the blurb (without having an idea of the full plot — something I don’t recommend).  Then I sat back, waiting for the story to come.  Plot Whisperer gave me some great ideas, and I wrote the book.

Phew.

My beta reader fixed it up.  My editor made it sparkle.  Initial reviews were good.

Still, I’m all nerves today as Lorcan makes his debut.

I can share that he’s a broken man, and Cody is there to support him as he rebuilds his life.  Cody doesn’t do the work — this isn’t a love fixes me book.  This is two men sharing a kink and slowly building a life where, eventually, they can’t see their lives without each other.  Oh, and a rescue puppy and kitty — because, why not?

Have I learned an important lesson?  Seed the next book.  I’m already signed up for the June Daddy/puppy book.  I’ve left a teaser at the end of Lorcan.

I LOVE writing these books.  I get to bring a bit of angst, a slow build to love, and a ton of puppy fun to my stories.  So that hell, yes! in 2024 was the best thing I ever said. (FYI – 2025 has been a hell, yes year and it looks like I’ll end with 9 books, 3 novellas, a pile of short stories, and 10 audios.)  I have no idea what 2026 will wind up looking like — but I have PLANS.

Thank you, Delilah, for letting me share my journey for you.  And to your fans for following along.

Contest: I would love to gift a copy of my two previous Daddy/puppy books: A Daddy for Christmas 2: Foster as well as Puppy Pride.  Just let me know – is there a trope you’d never heard of before you started reading?  One that has either captured your imagination or one that you said ‘nope, not for me’.  I can easily say I’d never understood BDSM until I came across a kink author. My life has never been the same.  One lucky commentor, chosen by Random, will win. Good luck!

A Daddy for Christmas 3: Lorcan Press Kit

Lorcan

I had the world in the palm of my hand until a false accusation sent everything to hell. I’ve spent the past year struggling to reclaim my life. At fifty-three, though, I honestly feel my best years are behind me. Then I find the courage to attend pup night at Club Kink. I’m not certain what to expect, but that night changes my life.

Cody

When I came out as gay at sixteen, things got so rough I was barely making it through my days. A great therapist helped me survive, and even thrive. Now, as a newly minted psychologist, I hope to make that kind of difference for my own patients, LGBTQ or not. Inside though, I have one more secret even my therapist never knew. And finally, I’ve found the courage to attend pup night at Club Kink. I keep telling my clients they need to reach for what’s important to their hearts. Tonight, I’m reaching for mine and hoping I find someone who wants what I have to offer.

This novel is an age-gap, opposites-attract gay romance about what happens when a man who’s given up on life is presented with a chance to start over and the younger man prepared to share that journey with him.

A Daddy for Christmas 3 is a multi-author series. Holiday tales of lost boys in need of Daddy’s love and in some cases, a firm hand. Naughty or nice, it’s all in Santa’s hands now. So why not dive in and read each standalone and enjoy the holidays alongside our boys? The characters’ theme is Grumpy and Sunshine.

Genevive Chamblee: Gratitude and Heartbeats

Thanksgiving has a way of slowing time, even if just for a day. The rush of autumn—the crisp air, the smell of leaves, the promise of comfort food—invites us to pause. Okay, that last part may be a stretch since temperatures have barely dipped out of the 70s, and when it did, no one was thrilled. Southern living, folks. The leaves do change color though, but the birds don’t go fly to a vacation home. The gators don’t feed as much, so there’s that. But I digress.

Typically, we think of Thanksgiving as a time to pause for gratitude. It’s also a time to notice the warmth in a kitchen, the laughter around a table, or the subtle brush of someone’s hand as they reach for the cranberry sauce. There’s a romance in Thanksgiving that doesn’t always get written about: the small, quiet intimacy of shared rituals, the kind that don’t need grand gestures to feel profound.

There’s something inherently romantic about cooking together. Chopping vegetables, tasting sauces, or nervously monitoring a turkey while your companion flits between the stove and the table. It’s choreography, really. One glance, one shared smile, and suddenly a mundane task becomes a memory stitched into the fabric of your relationship—or these days caught on a cell phone video. Candlelight and champagne dinners are fantastic romance settings. But more times than not, that backdrop is amid the clatter of pans and the hum of conversation.

Thanksgiving is also a season for reflection, and reflection invites connection. As families and friends gather, stories are told, and histories are revisited. There’s vulnerability in recounting past Thanksgiving disasters or awkward moments, and there’s intimacy in listening, really listening, to someone’s laughter and sighs. Romance thrives in those spaces, too. It grows in shared understanding, in empathy, in knowing that someone else sees you. And when I say see you, I’m not talking about only the surface. I mean all the messy, imperfect parts that only show up when the stuffing is halfway done and the pie is about to burn.

Then there’s the anticipation of small gestures: someone slipping a hand into yours while walking through a pumpkin patch, lingering by the pie table to taste-test your baking, a whispered “thank you” for making this day feel lighter, warmer. It’s fleeting, almost invisible, yet it anchors you in the moment. And isn’t that what romance is, at its best? Anchoring us. Giving ordinary moments weight. Turning fleeting touches into lasting memories.

Even the idea of Thanksgiving itself is romantic when you think about it. The word “thanks” implies reflection, acknowledgment, and gratitude. Love, in many ways, is just that: gratitude expressed in actions, in presence, in patience. When we carve the turkey or pour the cider, when we offer the last slice of pumpkin pie or a quiet compliment to a loved one, we’re practicing romance in its simplest, most enduring form.

By the end of the day, as dishes are cleared and the golden light of late afternoon spills across the room, there’s a lingering sense that something has been quietly strengthened. Hands have been held, hearts have been nudged, and ordinary moments have been transformed into stories worth retelling. Thanksgiving and romance share a rhythm: a slow, steady pulse of attention, care, and warmth. And in that rhythm, even for a day, love finds its quiet celebration.

Now, it’s your turn. I’d love to hear them. What are you grateful for this season? Do you have a holiday romance? Share in the comments below!

And if you’re curious about diving deeper into Southern charm and emotional journeys, my books are waiting to welcome you into their worlds.

Demon Rodeo

If Brokeback Mountain, 8 Seconds, Poltergeist, and Supernatural had an orgy, Demon Rodeo would be the lovechild.

Demon Rodeo is available now on Amazon. For video book trailers, visit my TikTok page. The full blurb is on my Instagram and Amazon.

Demon Rodeo is the first book in the Chasing the Buckle series but can be read as a standalone. It’s a friends-to-lovers romance set in the rodeo world. These are not your typical cowboys. It’s a widely diverse cast of characters and a mashup of genres that aren’t always seen together. If you’re looking for a palate cleanser, this may be a book for you.

Sliding Puzzle: Keys to Happiness (Contest)

It’s hump day! We’re halfway through the week! Tonight, I’ll be sitting in the art center, eating a meal with my peeps. We have an annual potluck to bring everyone together and share a meal — a celebration before the holidays kick off. I love it. The food’s always good, and we usually have a larger crowd than at our monthly art meetings.

I’m focusing on happiness. Pfft to medical drama. That entire process can march along and I’ll show up when they tell me to, but I prefer to live my life and have some fun, so tonight I’ll be eating chili, pulled pork sandwiches, and homemade desserts.

I found an image to represent the “Keys to Happiness” for the puzzle today. The keys they show are great, but I’d add Family, Hugs, Movie Nights, and Thrift Store Treasure Hunts. For a chance to win a $5 Amazon gift card, what would you add?
