Burns Singer was born in New York but moved to Scotland when he was four. He was educated in Glasgow but evacuated to Maud in Aberdeenshire during the Second World War. He spent a few years at the Marine Biology Laboratory in Aberdeen and this provides the background to his description of the fishing industry in Living Silver (1957) as well as some of his poetry. He left Aberdeen for London and died in 1964 in Plymouth.
