January 6, 2022: A Knighthood For Ian Livingstone

Ian Livingstone, a founder of Games Workshop and co-author of the Fighting Fantasy series, was knighted on the UK's 2022 New Years Honours List, meaning that henceforth he is Sir Ian Livingstone. Congratulations!

I have not seen Sir Ian for many years, but I remember him as a tireless worker, a patient teacher, and a very nice fellow. This award brings honor to the whole game industry, and he's a worthy examplar. I am delighted at his recognition.

January 5, 2022: Pre-Order The Hardcover Fantasy Bestiary For Dungeon Fantasy RPG's Nordlond Setting

Capping off a fantastic year of partnership with Steve Jackson Games, Gaming Ballistic launched its most ambitious Powered by GURPS project to date: The Nordlond Bestiary and Enemies Book for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG . Thanks to a late surge in pledges in the last few days, the book swelled to 192 pages. With strategic partnerships with fulfillment companies in both the U.S. and U.K., Gaming Ballistic was able to offer worldwide shipping of all items, not just the new books.

[Nordlond Bestiary

And with the participation and encouragement of the team at SJ Games, Gaming Ballistic announced a "module" for the Foundry VTT platform, for drag-and-drop-and-play import of the monsters from the bestiary — including artwork — into the GURPS Game Aid (Unofficial) supported by Nick and Nose. If you missed the campaign, it's not too late: Pre-orders for the Nordlond Bestiary and Enemies Book are open until the book files go to print, probably in mid-February. Until then, you can get the Bestiary , quick-reference cards, Delvers to Grow , and all of Gaming Ballistic's other products in both digital and physical form via the Backerkit pre-order system anywhere in the world. Grab the Bestiary , Nordlond to Go! , or — if you're a game store — nab a fully supported setting in one click.

January 4, 2022: The Fantasy Trip Foes Campaign Ends Today

Today is the final day to support our STL miniature Kickstarter campaign for The Fantasy Trip Foes , featuring dozens of fantasy sculpts ranging from skeletons to octopi to orcs – and even the legendary Long Lankin. While these miniatures have been designed for use with The Fantasy Trip , they're timeless designs that work for pretty much any tabletop roleplaying game! Plus, you're getting the files for sculpts to print on your own 3D printer anytime you want, or you can use a third-party site like Shapeways to print them out.

We're very excited about the success of this campaign! Hopefully, we can use this system to bring you a variety of miniature lines. If you're reading this before 4 p.m. CST, you still have a chance to back the campaign!

January 3, 2022: Kickstarter Reports, January 2022 Update

Somehow, it is now 2022. This means it has now been three years since Ben Richards took down Damon Killien and his corrupt televison game show. Good thing, because I'd hate to think we're living in a dystopian, totalitarian world where the wealthy can get away with anything and the people are manipulated and oppressed by the media.

But I've forgotten my reason for being here, which is to present our monthly report detailing the status of active Kickstarter campaigns. At the moment, we have four ongoing projects, two of which are likely to complete fulfillment in the next few months and one that is still funding on Kickstarter. (But not for long; The Fantasy Trip Foes campaign closes on Tuesday, so act fast!)

Please follow us on Kickstarter — Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23 — to receive notice when we launch new campaigns.

The Fantasy Trip Foes, STL Miniatures for Fantasy RPGsDecember 13, 2021 to January 4, 2022Well over 500 backers and still fundingOur first STL miniatures project! This campaign is for those who own 3D resin printers – or have access to them – and wish to print fantasy minis for use with The Fantasy Trip , the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game , or almost any other tabletop fantasy RPG that supports tactical play on a map. GURPS Girl Genius October 20 to November 82,915 backers and ahead of scheduleThe books are printed and scheduled to ship to the fulfillment sites in the U.S. and U.K. this month. Those backers who selected PDF rewards were sent their files last month, which is well ahead of the May 2022 estimated delivery date. We fully expect U.K. and EU fulfillment to start in February and U.S. fulfillment to begin just as soon as the books reach the warehouse.Random Fun Generator 2, Dice Games from Steve Jackson GamesSeptember 23 to September 301,533 backers and ahead of scheduleBackers who selected only PDF rewards have all of their files and the print books are scheduled to complete printing later this month. At the moment, it looks like fulfillment of print rewards will happen in February. Car Wars Sixth Edition by Steve Jackson Games November 29 (2019) to January 6 (2020)3,936 backers, behind scheduleU.S. fulfillment is complete! International shipping is scheduled to start this month. It will not be a fast process. We have to pack rewards and then ship them to different fulfillment points around the world. We'll update the Kickstarter campaign as things move ahead. That puts us at one project funding, one actively in the fulfillment stage, and the remaining two getting close to fulfillment. To accelerate the fulfillment of GURPS Girl Genius and Random Fun Generator 2 , we are working with a different warehouse, which leaves the Warehouse 23 team clear to focus on Car Wars Sixth Edition international rewards. Tapping an outside warehouse to help with fulfillment costs us more, but it clears the decks faster and gets the rewards into the hands of backers quicker than if Warehouse 23 handled all of the packing and shipping.

Please follow both Steve Jackson Games and Warehouse 23 on Kickstarter so that you don't miss any of our upcoming campaigns.

January 2, 2022: Hex Bases Coming This Month

[Image] When we created the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game , we made a custom hex-shaped base for the included cardboard standies. This base design proved popular and we offered packs (black and rainbow), but one thing we neglected to do was make it easy for retailers to stock and display them.

After listening to retailer requests and feedback, we've gone back to the factory and created a blister pack loaded with 14 bases that retailers can easily peg and display in their stores.  Hex Bases makes an excellent addition to our growing selection of game accessories and is scheduled to ship to stores late this month.

It's a relatively minor addition to our catalog, but we've learned over the years to listen when retailers ask for a specific item.

January 1, 2022: My Kingdom For A Monster!

Munchkin Shakespeare Since its release in 2017, Munchkin Shakespeare has been one of our more popular Munchkin games, with multiple printings and a host of expansions and accessories. Because it's now such a successful game, it's fun to look back on its origins. Not only was it the first Munchkin game on Kickstarter, but its crowd-sourced roots go all the way back to a certain JoCo Cruise, where Andrew and SJ brainstormed ideas for what was to be an expansion.  Andrew wrote about the experience, and why it was integral in us choosing to crowdfund the game.

What started as simply an idea for an expansion grew into a full deluxe game, plus expansions, plus bonus items and promos. It truly was a passion project for Andrew in particular, and once the Shakespearean tap had been opened it was impossible to close! So in this, the fourth year of Munchkin Shakespeare , we must say that while brevity may be the soul of wit, we're glad that the  Munchkin Shakespeare  line has been anything but brief!

December 30, 2021: GURPS Reign Of Steel 1997 New Release Solicitation

[Image] The Steve Jackson Games archives stretch back decades into the past, loaded with all sorts of fun information, images, and surprises. When you've been active for over forty years, you tend to hold onto some really fun and unusual stuff.

From issue #54 of Where We're Going, our on-again/off-again newsletter, comes this full-page solicitation for the release of the GURPS Reign of Steel world book. Digging even deeper into our records, I find that there have been two distribution-released printings of the book, a PDF release, and a print-on-demand release. I don't have access to exact printing information at the moment; many of our print records are in physical files at the office and there simply hasn't been time to spend days exploring those old records. Might make for a fun holiday break, though!

Although first published in 1997, you can find GURPS Reign of Steel in print right now through the print-on-demand offering at Amazon.

December 29, 2021: Classic Car Wars Expansion, The Best Of Autoduel Quarterly Volume 1, Now On Warehouse 23

[Image] One of the cool things about a company with four decades of releases is that we sometimes get to look to the past. A few years ago, thanks to your support, we looked deep into the past and reprinted several Car Wars expansions from the eighties. Now, as the warehouse team finds the time to complete the necessary work, we continue to release some of those retro-reprints to the world for those who missed the Kickstarter campaign.

What does this mean? Well, it means that your copy of The Best of Autoduel Quarterly Volume 1 that may be beaten and abused can now be replaced with a factory-fresh reproduction!

"Start your engines! For a decade  from 1983 through 1993 — Steve Jackson Games published Autoduel Quarterly, a magazine devoted to Car Wars. Featuring scenarios, campaign information, fiction, rules, and more, this is an autoduelist's dream."

More and more, as I look back at this reprint project, it makes me think we should tackle a similar campaign to create reproductions of the first few years of GURPS releases so that everyone can replace their faded and tattered books with clean and near-exact reprints. Of course, the original GURPS box set would have to be part of such a project, right?
