Mia Templeton needs a heart transplant because her own heart is failing. She receives a heart from a murdered girl of about her same age and as soon as she receives the heart she begins hearing whispers, having strange dreams which feel incredibly real as if they are memories. She likes food she’d never liked before, and becomes more assertive, able to stand up for herself. She is also attracted to Morgan, a new boy at her high school, who has been adopted by his aunt, Mia’s friend Beth, a descendant of the author Louisa May Alcott.
R. R. Smythe has done a marvelous job of bringing to life the story of Louisa May Alcott and her family. The entire time period is captured including the Battle of Gettysburg. Beth has re-created a house in Gettysburg to match the Alcott home and she gives tours of the house and the battlefield. Mia and Morgan both work for Beth. Part of the tours involve the Underground Railroad tunnels, but after Mia’s surgery and Morgan’s arrival, the tunnels begin acting strangely. Mia is drawn into a mystery she never dreamed of, where there are caretakers for the tunnels and these caretakers are governed strictly to be sure they don’t violate any of the rules surrounding the use of the tunnels.
I really like Mia and I think her recovery after the transplant surgery seems very real. Mia used to be very active, horseback riding, being a cheerleader, and so forth, until her heart disease prevented any exertions at all. Now, as she is recovering, she realizes that many of the activities which she loved are gone forever. The loss of her former life would be a blow to anyone, but for someone who is just a senior in high school, it is a daunting prospect to have to adjust to. In addition to learning about her new heart and what she can and can’t do, Mia also has the added genetic changes and the memories she experiences as vivid dreams. I found Mia’s adjustments to be realistic and very human. I could feel her pain, her frustration, and her bewilderment.
I also like Morgan and Beth who have their own problems which they have to adjust to as well. They hold secrets and it quickly becomes clear to them that Mia is discovering those secrets on her own. An entire literary world unfolds as the story races forward, and it is exciting to see how the characters change and interact as the events unfold.
Readers of historical fiction, especially about the American Civil War and the literary figures from that time period, are sure to enjoy this novel about Louisa May Alcott and her descendants.

Bride of Blackbeard has it all. You'll instantly feel a part of the story as Constanza's character seems to come alive. You'll walk right beside her as she endured the sadness, pain and sorrow, of growing up, and you'll root for her, all through the healing process. Bride of Blackbeard was hard to put down. The secondary characters, some you'll love to hate, some will steal your heart, just as Constanza and her siblings do.
Ms. Chapman definitely has a winner, and you'll want to have the tissues handy, it tears at your heartstrings, and you'll love every minute of it! The setting is spot-on and as if time had turned back. You won't want to pass this one by, it's a must read, and one that should be on everyone's keeper-shelf.

The Bride of Blackbeard by Brynn Chapman is what I refer to as a ‘beefy’ read. It’s a romance sandwiched between historical facts and a personal growth story.
Constanza is a great heroine. She is strong willed with a purpose. But unlike so many historical romances that plop a 2008 woman into the past, Constanza’s ‘Stanzy’ is believable and very well defined. A childhood filled with unspeakable nightmares has forced her to be stronger and more self reliant than most women of her time.
Where Constanza is a woman not molded in the traditional time setting, Lucian is. As a hero restricted by the mindset of the 1700s his character is often at odds with Stanzy. Lucian is a man of good heart and nature, something Constanza hasn’t been lucky enough to have in her life.
The final barrier to their happiness is the same—Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard.

Okay. Primarily this is a science fiction book with lots of romance and it's a page-turner thriller. I sat up until almost three in the morning reading this book because I couldn't put it down.
Brynn Chapman has written a well-researched book that takes the fledgling science of cloning and genetics just a step further. Project Mendel will reach out grab you, suck you right into the story, and scare the pants off you. I loved it. You will root for the heroes and heroines, some of it will be difficult to read, and it will make you cry and a lot of it will make you think. I give this one a solid 5 and a recommended read.

Into the Woods by R.R. Smythe - This Young Adult Fantasy will send chills down your spine. I, as the reader, followed Callum and witnessed everything he and his friends went through as they attempted to decipher the messages. Each time Callum deciphered one of the four messages, some villagers awakened. Through the eyes of Ellsbeth, I saw the other sleepers wander, make mistakes, and be released from the Netherwood, leaving Ellsbeth alone. Excellent reading for any age of fantasy fans!

5 Sparkles for Heart Murmurs

My Review:
Heart Murmurs is the first book in a new young adult series series by R. R. Smythe. This book was completely different from anything I've ever read before. It takes famous authors of the past that we all know and love and adds quite a twist. Mia's situation is gripping, and she is a very loveable character, so that just makes the reader that much more attached to her as the book progresses. Morgan tries to be tough and distant. It didn't last long, but he tried. He's pretty adorable actually. The muscle memory aspect to this story is very interesting. Some of the odd and quirky things the body is capable of is truly amazing. There is so much to this story both on the surface and deeper, and it was a complete adventure to read. Just when you think everything's okay, guess what? It's not. Heart Murmurs takes originality to a whole new level. I was super excited to find out in my interview with the author, R.R. Smythe, that there will be a sequel to Heart Murmurs! The ending definitely leaves you believing there will be more. And there is more, so much more left to be told about Mia and Morgan.
