Do Not Lay Up Treasures on Earth
This past weekend, the following Scripture came to mind:
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:19–20)
I thought of this passage while Mally (my wife) and I were taken by friends to visit the "Biltmore House." What an amazing place! It was built by George W. Vanderbilt back in the 1800's (opened in 1895). He brought his bride to live there in 1900, but he died in 1914, having lived in the house less than 20 years.
Here are some photos as we walked through the gate:
It is really a castle—the biggest house in America. The house has 250 rooms encompassing 135,000 square feet—a little larger than the average home!
Click here to view the embedded video.
The place is filled with valuable paintings, ornaments, and other collector items. The craftsmanship throughout is impossible to describe—one has to view it. George Vanderbilt took his architect to Europe to visit various castles for ideas etc. You can find out much more information about this fascinating one of a kind place on the web. In the museum about the house we visited, it stated this was George Vanderbilt's legacy. I'm sure he never envisioned thousands upon thousands of people walking through this place each year, gazing in amazement at the opulence. For the time he lived in the house, it was even more amazing—with an inside swimming pool, central heating, electricity from a generator, a bowling alley, and the list goes on and on.
However, Matthew 6 came to mind as I walked through this castle, which reminded me of one of the palaces Mally and I visited in England. Here is what I pondered:
1. There were places where there was considerable explanations of how many people over years have painstakingly restored furniture, curtains, wall decorations, ornaments, and so on. Over time, in this fallen world, everything decays. In fact, people have to continually work to preserve this massive building and its contents. What a reminder that on this earth, moth and rust will destroy as we read in Matthew. Eventually, all the material items of this world will be gone. We all need to be reminded that only the souls of humans on this earth are eternal—we will all live forever, in heaven or hell.
2. George Vanderbilt only lived in this house for less than 20 years, and then he was taken into eternity. What a reminder that the things of this world are like a flower—here today and gone tomorrow. We get so tied to the material things of this earth that are so, so temporary. How we need to be reminded that God has prepared a special place for those who have put their trust in Him, and this will be our eternal home. This burdened me even more that we are here for so little time—it is nothing compared to eternity. Oh how we need to use our time and material goods wisely for the most important priority in life: that people will know the Lord.
"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also." (John 14:1–3)
Heaven is a kingdom prepared by the Father for his saints—those who have put their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. Wow, what we can look forward to!
3. When I read in the museum that this house was George Vanderbilt's "legacy," I wondered whether he laid up treasures in heaven or only on earth. I, of course, have no idea concerning this man's heart or where he stood regarding God's Word and salvation. I didn't see any evidence in anything I read that he was interested in such matters. Certainly he and his wife were involved in humanitarian matters. They helped people including children in various ways. And we can certainly applaud them for that. But if the house and contents—that continue to decay and one day will be totally gone when this earth is finally renewed—is really the most important legacy of this man, then despite the awe inspiring house, this is infinitely sad.
I certainly don't begrudge someone living in a beautiful place like this—think about Solomon and all his splendor. But if material things of this earth are really our main focus and we do not ensure we are a new creation in Christ, then while it may be a little bit of "heaven" on earth, it is nothing compared to eternity!
My parents never had much in the way of material goods on this earth. My father left enough for my mother to live out her days when he went to be with the Lord 16 years ago. However, my father and mother have left a legacy on this earth—not of material things but a spiritual legacy, in the children they trained for the Lord. The Answers in Genesis ministry and Creation Museum are really the legacy of parents who stood authoritatively, uncompromisingly, and boldly on God's Word, and passed that legacy on to their children. Now it is being passed on to their children. And that legacy is being passed on to millions around the world who have been reached by the ministry the Lord raised up to equip Christians to defend the faith and proclaim the gospel powerfully so people will be saved!
Now that's a legacy worth leaving, as it is a legacy that has eternal value!
A good man leaves an inheritance (legacy) to his children's children, (Proverbs 13:22).
Remember, the most important and most valuable inheritance (legacy) you can leave is a spiritual one! Is that what you are doing?
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:19–20)

Beware
Here is a passage of Scripture for us to ponder this morning:
"Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them." (Matthew 7:13–20)
Recently I warned people on my blog about a speaker involved with Biologos who is producing a curriculum for homeschoolers.
Dr. Georgia Purdom—AiG speaker, researcher, and writer—also included an item about this on her facebook:
I love my job but sometimes it is so depressing to see the rampant compromise that is going on in the church on a daily basis. The link is to a lecture given by Peter Enns (theistic evolutionist associated with BioLogos) at a Christian college. It's worth it to watch to see that compromise doesn't stop in Genesis. The last point on his last slide is "Theology is provisional." I think that says it all.
Someone then wrote the following comment in response:
I just want to say thank you to those of you who stood firm —and for the awesome ministry of AIG. I am reminded to pray for you yet again. As we repent & God opens our eyes to this false 'Christianity' that glorifies man & the world's kingdom & humanly imagined 'solutions'—we have a place to go for Answers that ARE biblical & that DO glorify God. ——–In fact, God be praised, He has used your ministry to confront many of us starving & feebly flailing in such churches —-with Truth and the need for repentance, and to flee to Jesus & separate from places that make starving to death soooooo comfortable to the flesh & remaining sin. We know about sorting goats & sheep —but it's tough seeing it play out before our eyes. And we know that Satan has a dreadful purpose for the Consort & that he hates the Bride —but, again, it's really hard to see it playing out.
I have had so many people at the homeschool convention come and thank me for informing them about such compromise. They said they would not want to purchase materials produced by such compromisers, and they wouldn't want their children exposed to such false teaching. Many pleaded with me to let them know about other such people so they can be prepared.

Teaching the Truth Amidst a Sea of Lies
Today I am giving my final presentation (the last of five) for the homeschool conference in Greenville, SC. While at these conferences, we often visit various exhibits to see what is being offered for sale to the homeschoolers. Invariably we find a "sea" of material that presents evolution and millions of years as fact. Here are some examples from some of the exhibit booths at this conference (by the way, there are some excellent materials offered to homeschoolers from quite a number of exhibitors, including AiG):
Twenty five years ago I wrote a book (which is still selling very strong) called, The Lie.
Over the years, I have seen the lie of evolution and millions of years pushed even more by the secular world. It is so sad to see this pagan religion that tries to explain life without God so infiltrating the church. More and more organizations are being formed and more books printed by people—even within the church—to try to get God's people to reject Genesis as literal history, and thus undermine the authority of God's Word. No wonder we are losing the next generation from the church. For instance, even at this homeschool convention, there are a number of people (including speakers) that are associated with the extremely liberal Biologos Foundation—an organization that is dedicated to trying to get people in the church to believe evolution and millions of years as fact. And now they are embarking on producing homeschool curriculum—such as that from Dr. Peter Enns who spoke at this conference.
But at the same time, I praise God for the opportunity, that even in this sea of lies permeating our culture, I am able to teach the truth of God's Word to many. Here is a photograph of me presenting at one of the sessions yesterday:

What Does "Hell" Really Mean?
On May 1, Master Books will release a new book entitled Already Compromised. This book reveals the results of research into what Christian colleges are really teaching students in regards to the Bible, inerrancy, inspiration, infallibility, and much more. I will be writing articles about all this in the future.
One of the themes of the book is to warn people that when Christian academics use terms like "literal," "take as written," "inerrancy," "infallibility," etc., what they mean by those words is not necessarily what the person hearing those words means by them. This seems to be a "virus" that is invading our Christian world these days. Another example of words not meaning what we may think they mean, or have always thought they meant, can be seen in this article from the Baptist Press website. It is an article about a book by a well known pastor in the "emergent church."
The article begins with the following:
Few events in recent memory have caused as much controversy and confusion among evangelicals as the latest book by well-known pastor Rob Bell, who in Love Wins denies hell and affirms universalism—all the while claiming he has done neither.
Bell—a key figure in the emerging church movement—often has flirted with controversy, such as the time in 2007 when he was asked about homosexuality and danced around the issue, refusing to take a historical biblical stand. Nothing that Bell has written or said, though, has been as controversial as Love Wins. . . Bell's former publisher, Zondervan, apparently refused to publish Love Wins, which is subtitled, "A Book about Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person who Ever Lived."
The article also states the following:
Most evangelical leaders, though, say the exclusivity of the Gospel and a literal heaven and hell are at the heart of Christianity. Yet in Love Wins, Bell redefines all three. He says the Gospel is exclusive—but also inclusive in that people worldwide will be saved even if they have not professed Christ. He affirms heaven—but says that Scripture sometimes defines it as the present day. He says he believes in hell—but then says it's not a literal place but simply a synonym for suffering in the modern world.
In recent days, Bell has denied he is a universalist, but his book says otherwise. Technically, Bell may be more rightly defined as an "inclusivist," which is a cousin of universalism and teaches that people who don't even know Christ—including Muslims and Hindus—will nevertheless, unconsciously, be saved through Christ. But on other pages of his book, Bell seems to make clear universalistic arguments.
The emergent church is a very serious problem in the Christian world today. I encourage you to read the rest of the article.

Wearing Biblical Glasses
We all wear glasses! In fact, there are only two kinds of glasses in an ultimate sense. We either wear God's glasses or man's glasses. As explained in the "Starting Points" room at the Creation Museum, there are only two starting points for our worldviews: one either starts with God's Word or man's word. Ultimately, there are only two religions in the world: one is based on God's Word (the Bible), and the other is based on man's word.
Dr. Georgia Purdom—AiG speaker, writer, and researcher—wrote a blog post about how she teaches children to understand the concept of wearing biblical glasses. This is just one of the ways we help to educate kids to ensure they don't put on the wrong secular glasses (man's glasses). In her blog post, she states the following:
We are using the Answers for Kids curriculum in Sunday school class and have been talking a lot about viewing the world beginning with the Bible. When I point to my eye, they tell me that God was the only eyewitness to creation so we should trust His account given to us in Genesis. I often hold up the Bible to my face and talk about looking at the world starting with the Bible. However, since the Bible is solid and you can't "see" through it, I thought of a fun way to illustrate this concept.
She then explains how to illustrate the glasses concept to children:
I bought some inexpensive sunglasses and some Christian themed foam stickers (I think it cost less than $5 total). I had the kids decorate the glasses on Sunday and told them that every time I say, "When we start with the Bible . . ." or "Look at the world through our biblical glasses . . ." that they are to put on their decorated sunglasses or "biblical glasses." I hope this will reinforce the idea that the world looks different when we start with the truth of God's Word rather than our own ideas or those of others.
She then shows a photograph of the kids wearing their glasses. I encourage you to read Georgia's entire blog post and see the photograph.

Another Compromiser—Speaking at Homeschool Conventions
This week from Thursday to Saturday, I will be speaking at a homeschool convention in Greenville, SC. Sadly, one of the speakers also listed to give presentations does not believe in a historical Adam or historical Fall (he will also be promoting his "Bible" curriculum for homeschoolers). In fact, what he teaches about Genesis is not just compromising Genesis with evolution, it is outright liberal theology that totally undermines the authority of the Word of God. It is an attack on the Word—on Christ. Dr. Enns now works with the very liberal Biologos Foundation (which I have discussed a number of times before in this blog). Dr. Enns is also listed to speak at the Cincinnati and Pennsylvania homeschool conventions where I will be speaking.
From the Biologos website, we read this from Peter Enns:
In my last post I suggested that the Adam story could be viewed symbolically as a story of Israel's beginnings, not as the story of humanity from ground zero.
But some might ask, "Why go through all this trouble? Why not just take it literally? The Bible says Adam was the first man. That's the end of it."
It's not that simple, and if it were, people wouldn't be talking it about it so much. First of all, reading the Adam story symbolically rather than as a literal description of history is not a whim, and it is certainly not driven by a desire to undermine the Bible. Rather, as we have seen, the Bible itself invites a symbolic reading by using cosmic battle imagery and by drawing parallels between Adam and Israel (to name two factors).
There is also considerable external evidence that works against the "just read it literally" mentality.
The biblical depiction of human origins, if taken literally, presents Adam as the very first human being ever created. He was not the product of an evolutionary process, but a special creation of God a few thousand years before Jesus—roughly speaking, about 6000 years ago. Every single human being that has ever lived can trace his/her genetic history to that one person.
This is a problem because it is at odds with everything else we know about the past from the natural sciences and cultural remains. (http://biologos.org/blog/pauls-adam-part-i/)
He accepts what the secular world teaches concerning evolution and millions of years, and it is so obvious this determines how he approaches the Bible. He does not have the same view of inspiration as I do. In fact, he doesn't have the biblical view of inspiration: "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness," (2 Timothy 3:16).
To understand Peter Enns's approach to Genesis and Romans (which will shock you), you need to watch his lecture given recently at Westmont College. To make it easier for you, here are some of the sections to watch in the video:
2:00–3:00
3:00–5:15
10:00–11:30
17:00–17:15
35:50–36:40
45:00–49:10
18:30–19:05
19:05–19:40
We think the world's in a mess—sadly the church along with the state of Christian colleges and academics are a reason for the mess. See this page for more details on the homeschool conventions.

AiG Features at All-Asian Creation Conference
In November of this year, I (and others) will be traveling to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia for a special Creation Conference. These five pages from the special flier will give you all the relevant information.
All-Asian Creation Conference
3 Days of Apologetics Training and Leadership Networking with Option for a 4-Day Pre-Conference Tour Plus Missions Awareness Program.
Live @ Kuala Lumpur Malaysia
Conference : 15–17 November 2011
Pre-Conference Tour : 11–14 November 2011
Welcome to the first ever All-Asian Creation Conference! As the message of the Gospel is preached to . . . .Dear Asian Friends:
It is with great joy that I welcome you to the All-Asian Creation Conference. This Conference has been in the planning stage for over 3 years. We came to realize that despite the many connections Answers WorldWide has with many Christian/Creationist all over Asia, we lack a central point of communication for Asians themselves. So, it is a real joy that Answers in Genesis and several Creation Ministries in Asia bring together the Asian Christian Community for the first ever Creation Conference with AiG Founder and CEO Ken Ham and other world renown speakers from around the world.
This conference will not only give important information about Creation and Biblical Apologetics but they will also allow Asians to network together to facilitate a greater impact throughout Asia with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Asians will share their ministries with each other and determine how they could work together to bring about a greater ministry impact.
As you are well aware, Malaysia is right in the midst of what is called the 10/40 Missionary Window. This area of the world is the most unreached population center in the world. So people from Africa to China and Egypt to India will be attending this Conference.
During our time together, there will be an opportunity to discuss the possibility of establishing a network of Creation-based ministries amongst Asians and other 10/40 countries resulting in future conferences and related events. This conference is designed for Lay Leaders, Pastors, Creation Ministry Leaders and any Christian who has a desire to know God's Word and fulfill the Scriptural mandate to "be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you" (1 Peter 3:15)
Answers in Genesis is totally committed to working with our Asian friends to establish strategic Creation ministries all over this part of the world.
We really hope that you will plan to attend these historic meetings and be part of fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19–20). We look forward to greeting you in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the greatest three days in Asian Ministry. You must be a part of this history conference—please come.
Regards,
Dr. David R. Crandall
International Director, Answers WorldWide
www.answersworldwide.org
All-Scripture. All-Gospel. All-Truth…The All-Asian Creation Conference is anchored by Answers in Genesis and we are privileged to be hosting the following speakers. As the invite list is still work in progress, do expect more distinguished speakers to be joining the line-up as we progress nearer to 15 November 2011.
Key Speakers
President and CEO, Answers in Genesis–USA & the Creation Museum. Since moving to America in 1987, Australian Ken Ham—president and founder of Answers in Genesis and the new highly acclaimed Creation Museum (with over 719,000 visitors in its first two years)—has become one of the most in-demand Christian conference speakers and talk show guests. Ken's emphasis is on the relevance and authority of the book of Genesis to the life of the average Christian, and how compromise on Genesis has opened a dangerous door regarding how the culture and church view biblical authority.
Dr. David Crandall
Dr. Crandall has ministered cross-culturally in 90 different countries. In his final year at GLS, the ministry distributed gospel literature to some 350 million people. In 2006, God directed Dr. Crandall to join the team at Answers in Genesis. He was named international director of Answers WorldWide and is currently responsible for taking AiG's creation ministry around the world. Answers WorldWide is translating, publishing, and distributing AiG materials to the mission fields of the world. Dr. Crandall also brings international Christian leaders to the Creation Museum in the U.S. for training and provides AiG libraries to Bible schools and seminaries around the world.
Dr. Andrew Macintosh
Dr. Macintosh is a Professor in Combustion Theory at Leeds University. His Ph.D. was in aerodynamics. A number of his students later worked for Rolls Royce, designing aircraft engines. He has written many books and lectured extensively in universities. He has mostly focused on the complexity and design inferences illustrated by flight capabilities of organisms. In addition, he works on how many kinds of insects such as bombardier beetles can support the creation model.
Steve Ham
Steve serves as Senior Director of Outreach for Answers in Genesis, overseeing the 250 conferences and other events that AiG typically holds each year. This oversight also includes AiG's international division, Answers WorldWide, which includes speaking tours overseas and a translations ministry (more than 75 languages). Steve is the author of the new book In God We Trust: Why Biblical Authority Matters for Every Believer (2010) and other works, including the popular curriculum on creation evangelism entitled Answers for Life. He also co-authored Raising Godly Children in an Ungodly World with his brother Ken. Steve's heart for evangelism and missions has resulted in serving on the boards of various Christian schools and missions organizations.

"Walking Billboards"
At the Creation Museum, we've seen over one and a quarter million people come through the doors. There were 1,700 people yesterday—more than the same date last year! With the many visitors that come through, it's not often we see something at the Creation Museum we haven't seen before. Yesterday was an exception to that rule. Rick and Sue Burkholder along with Al and Marti Hyslip from Ohio visited wearing "walking billboards." As you can see in the photo below, each member of the group wore a sign attached to their hats.
Rick said Sue comes up with these ideas, and Sue said Rick is the inventor to make her ideas happen. In any case, they definitely received attention. The signs were supportive of the museum's ministry, as they stated, "I came … I saw … and I believe" and "Prepare to believe." When asked, they say they wear the signs because they believe Genesis is foundational for Bible belief. They are charter lifetime members.
The phrase often used with the Creation Museum logo is "Prepare to believe."

Out of Africa Visitors
The Mwangaza Children's Choir of Uganda, with children from various
challenging backgrounds, toured the Creation Museum this week. Uganda is in east-central Africa and it's a nation has seen some difficult times over the
past 40 years or so, especially under the brutal dictatorship of Idi Amin in
the 1970s.
The Mwangaza Choir is made up of children ages 8–12, and is an outreach of
Africa Renewal Ministries. The children present songs and dances that help
share a message of hope in Christ. At the same time, the choir raises
awareness of the need to build more churches, schools, orphanages,
hospitals, etc. in that needy part of the world. (By the way, Mwangaza is
the Swahili word for "shining light.")
This photo of the entire group was taken at the museum's special Foto FX
area inside the Creation Museum.
