Hank Hanegraaff and Days of Creation

Recently, Hank Hanegraaff (known on the radio as "The Bible Answer Man") gave an answer on his nationwide radio program to a question about the days of creation in Genesis 1.

An AiG supporter transcribed this section of the program for us (which I have printed below). I must admit, I do groan when I hear such answers from an influential person in the Christian world—especially someone who has a national program that has the word Bible in its title and is a leader known to be anti-evolution. We have invited Hank to visit the Creation Museum, and are willing to bring him to our museum and AiG headquarters at our cost so we can meet with him again (as we used to do when Hank was working in California and I was living there, too). So please pray that this comes about. Before you read the transcript, I have made some comments pertaining to our subject matter today.

We have many articles on the AiG website that deal with Genesis 1 as historical narrative, which it is. (See the overwhelming biblical evidence of Stephen Boyd and Robert McCabe, both Old Testament Hebrew scholars, in their respective chapters in Coming to Grips with Genesis.)

There are many examples of Scriptural references outside of Genesis (including the New Testament) that refer directly to Genesis 1 (and Genesis chapters 1–11) as straightforward history. Here are just a few:

Genesis 1–11

Adam was the first man (1 Corinthians 15:45), who sinned and brought death into the world (Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:22). Eve was made after Adam (1 Timothy 2:13), and from Adam (1 Corinthians 11:8–9), and she, not Adam, was deceived by the serpent, who is Satan (2 Corinthians 11:3; 1 Timothy 2:14; Revelation 12:9). Adam and Eve were at the beginning of creation, not millions of years after the beginning (e.g., Mark 10:6; Romans 1:20). Cain killed Abel because Abel's deeds were righteous whereas Cain's were evil (1 John 3:12). Enoch was the seventh generation from Adam (Jude 14). Noah's Flood happened and was a global precursor to the coming global judgment at the return of Christ (Matthew 24:37–39; 2 Peter 3:3–7), and only eight people survived it (1 Peter 3:20, 2:5).

Let's go more into depth about the strong New Testament/Genesis connection and then get back to the radio broadcast in question.

Genesis chapter 1

1. In Matthew 19, Jesus (who is the Word, the Truth) quoted from both Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 when dealing with the doctrine of marriage. He was obviously referring to the same one man and one woman. Jesus believes Genesis 1 as literal history! Do we dare say Jesus got it wrong? As we read, "let God be true but every man a liar" (Romans 3:4).

Read the words of Jesus as He quotes from Genesis 1:27 and Genesis 2:24: "And He answered and said to them, 'Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?" (Matthew 19:4–5).

2. "Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image" (Genesis 1:26). There are a number of passages in the Bible that quote this, such as "For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God" (1 Corinthians 11:7). The reason we know man was created in the image of God is because it is recorded in Genesis 1.

The above references show that Jesus and the apostle Paul (and others writers of Scripture) quoted from Genesis 1 as literal history. There are, of course, many other examples. Now if one takes Genesis 1 as literal history, it is obviously a chronology—day one to day six. In fact, Exodus 20:11 is God's commentary on Genesis 1 and shows that the days of creation were the same length as the days of the Jewish week that God commanded in Exodus 20:8–10: "For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it" (Exodus 20:11).

If we are going to believe Genesis 2 is history (as I presume Hank does), then we have to accept the seventh day of the creation week—and we also have to accept the previous six days as outlined in Genesis 1. See this article for a detailed discussion of the meaning of the word day in Genesis 1.

When you hear someone talk about the reliability of the "book of nature" (as you will read in the radio transcript below), you need to remember that this "book" doesn't say anything in words. Hugh Ross (who accepts a big bang, billions of years, a local flood, death before the Fall, etc.) believes that the so-called "book of nature" is the 67th book of the Bible. Now it is true that Romans 1:20 states we are without excuse because creation obviously reveals the existence and some of the attributes of God. But neither those passages nor any others teach that from a study of creation alone we can figure out how and when God created, what its original state was, and why it is the way it is today. For that information, we must go to the written Word of God, not nature. There we find that creation has been subject to the effects of sin and the curse (Romans 8:22), not in Genesis 1 but in Genesis 3.

When some Christian leaders use the term "book of nature," they are usually referring to man's fallible interpretation of the fallen creation—and particularly man's interpretation in regard to the unobservable past! The only way we can know for sure what happened in the past is to read the record of One who was there, the One who knows everything, doesn't lie, and has revealed to us what happened. We have such a record in the Bible, beginning at Genesis 1:1.

Now read the transcript of the answer given on radio by Hank Hanegraaff:

Caller Theresa: Hi! I wanted to ask you if you believe that God created the earth and all in it in seven literal days, or if you kind of translate it into thousands of years or . . . ?

HH: Well, that's an interesting question. I think that one of the things that we have to recognize is that the book of Genesis is a literary, artistic masterpiece in a lot of different ways.

Uh, first you have a mnemonic device by which you can remember the creative prowess of God every single day of the week so that you have two triads which are memorable, which correspond to one another in alliterated fashion that you can remember as a mnemonic device each day of the week. I think that in itself is profound.

Secondly, I think that you have to recognize that all of Genesis is written in such a way that you can remember it with ten fingers of your hand. So that the genealogical construction and the people mentioned are mentioned in such a way that you can remember God's creative prowess as well as the foundation of the entire biblical text out of which comes an ongoing plan of redemption culminating in a new heaven and a new earth where indwells righteousness.

My point here is to say that I do not think that Genesis chapter one is designed to give you a chronology of creation, but rather to give you a hierarchy of creation—uh, ultimately culminating in a new creation so I, I think if you want to answer the age question, you're better off going to God's other book, which is the book of nature. I don't think that Genesis is intended to give you a timeframe.

Caller Theresa: So you don't think we should look at nature and use the Genesis account as a starting point and interpret nature based on the Genesis account—you think we should use nature to interpret Genesis?

HH: No, no, I wouldn't say that at all. I think that you have to employ the art and science of biblical interpretation to rightly interpret the Genesis account of creation. You need to be able to read the Bible for all its worth. For example, when you get to Genesis chapter three and you see that the serpent is tempting Eve and then later you see how the serpent suffers as a result of his temptation, and how Christ forever puts enmity between the seed of the woman, you see immediately how powerful the text is and you don't want to minimize the power of the text by supposing that, that Jesus Christ crushed the power of the evil one by stepping on the head of a snake. You want to take the text and read it in the sense in which it's intended, and so I don't in any way say that you want to take ah, some kind of minimalist approach to the interpretation of the book of Genesis. No, you need to learn to read it for all its worth.

Caller Theresa: OK, thank you.

I do trust this will burden you to pray for our Christian leaders across the nation and world. Pray that the Lord will open their eyes in regard to the importance of standing upon biblical authority from the very first verse and away from the opinions of fallible men who look to the "book of nature."

This is another example of why our new publication Already Compromised (about biblical compromise in Christian colleges) is so needed—to challenge Christians and Christian leaders. You can pre-order your copy at a special price in our online store.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Too Young to Understand

Many of you will recall the situation a few weeks ago resulting in AiG and me being disinvited from a homeschool convention in Cincinnati. The bottom line is that I stood publicly (in my previous blog posts and at similar conventions prior to the Cincinnati meeting) against the teaching of Dr. Peter Enns of BioLogos. Not only is his teaching concerning God's Word heterodox in many areas, he is also producing a homeschool curriculum for children called Telling God's Story (published by Olive Branch Books, Charles City, Virginia—the religious instruction imprint of Peace Hill Press). This curriculum was (and still is) a great concern for me, knowing that there is a concerted effort by BioLogos to promote what Enns believes to generations of homeschool students.

Because of these events, a group of homeschooling students decided to attend a lecture by Dr. Enns, and then speak with him afterwards. I met these students who, by the way, came across as very gracious but very sure of what they believed. I asked them to send me a written report on what happened with their interaction with Dr. Enns. Because of notes they had taken, and I believe the integrity of this group, they were very careful to send me what they believe is a very accurate account of what happened.  As you read this report, you will be saddened by the answers given by Dr. Enns but encouraged at the stand this next generation of homeschool students has on the authority of God's Word. I do pray their witness to Dr. Enns will be used of the Lord to convict him concerning believing God's Word as he should. Read their following account:

My family and I went to the Creation Museum Saturday evening after our time spent at the Great Home School Convention in Cincinnati.  We wanted to support you in your efforts to stand firm on the doctrines of our faith, particularly in regards to the teachings of Dr. Enns and the Convention organizers. While at the museum my family and I were able to talk with you about my encounter with Dr. Enns at the convention.  You asked me to email you with information about this experience.  The following is a description of my encounter with Dr. Enns.

Before going to the Great Home School Convention my friends and I had heard that you and Answers in Genesis had been uninvited to speak and to set up an exhibit booth because of the stand you took against the teaching of Dr. Enns. While at the convention, I and a group of seven other friends decided to go and listen to a lecture given by Dr. Enns so that we could know first-hand what he was teaching and so that we would be better informed when we went to discuss his beliefs with him. Since we went into Dr. Enns' lecture with every intention of talking to him afterwards, we were all taking notes. After his lecture, we left for a few minutes to discuss what we had heard and to make sure that when we went to talk to him we were doing it for the right reasons and not just to attack him.

When we went back into the lecture room we made our way to the front and stood waiting to ask him our questions. At that time we asked him if he believed the Bible to be the true inspired word of God and if He believed it to be completely true, because he had said in his lecture that the books in the Bible between Genesis and Revelation were just trivial details. He told us that He did believe the Bible to be the true word of God and that there were no mistakes in it. We also asked him if he believed Adam, from Genesis chapter one, was a real man. He told us that he believed Adam was metaphorical.

We left to go to lunch after asking those questions. While at lunch we discussed what he had told us about Adam being a metaphorical man and decided that since we didn't understand how that could possibly work that we would go to his booth to ask him some more questions.

When we went up to Dr. Enns' booth in the exhibit hall we asked him if he had time to talk to us, when he said yes we started what would end up being a 45 minute discussion. We started the conversation by asking him why he believed that Adam was a metaphorical man. He told us that he actually believed that all of Genesis 1-11 was a metaphor. He told us that this metaphor was written to ancient people who could not understand science and religion as we did because their culture was so infused with idolatry and mythology. Genesis 1-11 was written in such a way that these ancient people would be able to understand how one God made the world and how sin came into existence. It is not to be taken literally though.

We then asked him how he knew that Genesis 1-11 was a metaphor and that the metaphor ended right at the division between chapter 11 and 12 of Genesis. He told us that he knew Genesis 1-11 was a metaphor because of science and archeology.  He did not tell us how he knew that Genesis 12 on was non metaphorical. After this statement we asked how science and archeology had proven that Genesis 1-11 was metaphorical and he told us that it was because of how long it would have taken the world to come into existence and from the fossil record. One of my friends then asked him how he believed the world came into existence at which time he told us that he believed in Theistic evolution, millions of years, and that man had evolved.

After hearing this we asked him if he believed that there was death before sin, because we all believe that death is a direct result of sin. He told us that there had been death before sin, because that is just the way our world works. Next, we asked Dr. Enns if Adam and Eve were metaphorical, and the garden of Eden was metaphorical, if that would mean that Adam and Eve didn't fall since they never truly existed.  So our question is, if that is the case, where did sin come from?

He told us that we were too young to understand the theological implications of that question, and that philosophers have been pondering this for years.

In reply we stated that we did understand that by not taking all of Genesis literally he had gotten rid of the creation of the world, the creation of man in the image of God, and the entrance of sin into the world.  We also said that if he didn't know that sin existed then we wouldn't know that we were sinners and thus wouldn't know that we were in need of a savior. He then tells us that we all have an innate knowledge that we are sinners and that we cannot know where sin came from. At this point one of my friends said that she knew where sin came from and she opened her Bible to Genesis and showed him.

Next, we asked him about five times if he would give us the names of some other people who believed the same things he did so that we could read some of their articles before he finally told us to look at biologos.com.

I don't believe that our questions persuaded him to alter his personal beliefs.  However, our questions did confirm for us that we know what we believe and that we can stand on the truth of God's word.  I want to thank you and Answers in Genesis for aiding us in understanding the truth of the biblical teaching found in the first eleven chapters of Genesis.

Please pray for more young people like these who graciously and thoughtfully challenged a PhD Christian academic concerning his compromise on God's Word. They were certainly not "too young to understand." Their understanding of God's Word was way above this academic.

Also I wanted to bring your attention to the fact that in this account, it is reported Dr. Enns said he believed the Bible to be the true word of God and that there were no mistakes in it. But then, as the students questioned further, what he meant by this statement was not what people would normally think concerning the meaning of what he claimed.  In the new AiG book to be released May 1 (entitled Already Compromised), we discuss what we call "Christian newspeak"—Christian leaders are saying things that make it sound like they believe God's Word, but in reality, their words don't mean what they would mean in the past. Such "Christian newspeak" is pervading Christianity, including churches, colleges, and so on. I encourage you to preorder Already Compromised.

Free MP3: Defending the Christian Faith Biblically and Scientifically

When we run our AiG conferences around the country, we often conduct special programs for young people. These are popular with teenagers and the adults who attend with their young people. Today, we are providing you with a link to the presentation I give to junior and senior high school students, parents, and teachers.

You can listen online or download free. The entire presentation is 1 hour 22 minutes long. Here are the topics covered.

How can we know there is a God? Who made God?
How did Noah fit the animals on the Ark?
What about speciation and what is called "natural selection"?
Is there any evidence for the worldwide Flood of Noah's day?
What about the age of the earth—what does the Bible teach us? What do secular scientists teach on this matter?
Can Christians believe in millions of years?
Are the days of creation six ordinary days or millions of years?
What about the dating methods—does "science" prove millions of years?
Are there "races" of people? What about skin color?
Does it really matter what a Christian believes about Genesis?

I encourage you to listen to or download this presentation.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

Irish Eyes Smiled

Evelyn and Wendy Verner (mother and daughter) visited the Creation Museum this past week, and they may be distant "cousins" of mine. You see, they came all the way from northern Ireland. Although I was born in Australia, a part of my heritage includes a northern Ireland ancestry.

The Verners traveled across the Atlantic ocean specifically to tour the Creation Museum. Wendy, who has a large collection of AiG materials, gave her mother our museum DVD Journey through the Creation Museum, and Evelyn watched it while getting over a sickness. Evelyn knew right then that she wanted to see the museum for herself.

Here is a photo taken of them at the museum's special Foto FX area.

The Verners

Both ladies told museum staff that they were impressed with the museum and that it was definitely worth the long trip. Evelyn and Wendy were on an AiG tour of Israel several months ago, and Wendy participated in AiG's evangelistic outreach at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

By the way, this is an excellent time to visit the Creation Museum. It's before the busy summer season, and our extensive gardens are in bloom and are looking fantastic.

Bible Bee Competition

Answers in Genesis is careful in lending its name and support of other organizations. We first get to know their leaders, mission, and high regard for biblical authority. Our friends at the National Bible Bee have earned our support.

The National Bible Bee is primarily a summer discipleship program for families, which is designed to share the Word of God with children. That includes Bible memorization and prayer. This program also leads to some competitive events, where children and teens (from ages 7–18) take part in local contests around America—this time on August 27 (with the national finals competition held in November).

The local competitions are for young people who have spent a lot of time in Bible study and Scripture memorization. It's all done in the context of families studying the Word of God together. Of the 300 top-scoring contestants from the August 27 local competitions, they are invited to the national competition held on November 16–19 in Nashville, Tennessee. There are scholarships and cash prizes to be awarded.

Organizers of the Bible Bee have shared with me that while they strongly encourage the memorization of Scripture, they don't want the competition to be just an exercise in "rote" memorization. Contestants are also tested on their comprehension of the verses. When families register their young person with their $30 fee, the student receives a Bible study, Bible memory cards, a Bible, and a T-shirt. Registration is now open through May 31 at www.biblebee.org.

Also, the Bible Bee is looking for more local hosts for contests in their communities. You can go to www.biblebee.org for information on that.

I hope you will have a blessed Sunday as you and your church commemorate our risen Savior. I leave you with these verses:

And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. (Matthew 27:29–30)

Enduring the driving of those large thorns of the crown, the Lord Jesus Christ was the ultimate "good soldier" who suffered for our sins to pay our redemption.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken

Free MP3: How to Defend the Christian Faith in Today's World

Recently, we began providing free audio downloads (and you can also listen to them online) to a number of the main presentations I give at conferences, in churches, schools, etc. These are similar to the presentations I was not allowed to give at a recent homeschool convention.

The first talk we provided was The Relevance of Genesis.

Today, we are providing you with a presentation entitled How to Defend the Christian Faith in Today's World.

Here is an outline of the talk:

The issue of origins science is different to that of developing our science technology. When we are discussing origins, we are trying to understand what happened in the past to bring the present into being. When we are developing technology, we are gaining knowledge through our five senses (based on repeatable testing).
Creationists and evolutionists, Christians and non-Christians all have the same evidence when it comes to the topic of origins. The battle is not the evidence as such, but how one interprets the evidence of the present in relation to the past.
Ultimately, there are only two starting points to develop a way of thinking about the universe—God's Word or Man's word.
The two starting points result in two different ways of thinking and thus differing interpretations of the same evidence in relation to the past
The word "science" basically means "knowledge." We can gain knowledge by observation, which in science is called operational (observational) science. We can talk about knowledge concerning the past and origins, which is called historical science. Most people don't understand the difference between historical and operational science. Secularists tend to mix the two together and call it "science," which is why so many people are easily led astray concerning the truth about origins.
Romans 1:20 is an "intelligent design" verse, but the intelligent design movement is not a Christian movement.
Christians have by and large been indoctrinated to believe there is a "neutral" position when arguing about origins, Christian morality, etc. Many have given up their starting point, thus allowing the starting point of Man's word to overpower the culture.
Because there is no "neutral" position, Christians need to once again stand boldly and uncompromisingly on God's Word. Christians need to honor God's Word—"Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God" (Romans 10:17).
Christians will continue to lose ground regarding the creation vs. evolution issue in schools, the Bible in schools, Christian symbols in public places, abortion issue, "Gay" marriage issue, and so on—unless they stop trying to act "neutral" and begin to stand for biblical authority.
The collapse of the Christian worldview in our Western world is related to the fact that the various cultures have changed starting points—from God's Word to man's word—and become more consistent in building their worldview on man's fallible word.
The Bible makes it clear that hearts and minds change cultures, but many Christians have spent millions of dollars trying to change the culture through legislation, which is not working.
Christians have by and large allowed the secular world to capture the hearts and minds of generations of the kids, and they need to be taken back and given the right foundation of God's Word.

You can listen to the audio of this talk in MP3 format online, or download it for free.

Earth Day—It's Nothing but Paganism

Today (April 22) is "Earth Day." Rather than writing an article on this, I recommend you read the article written by my good friend Doug Philips from Vision Forum. Doug writes, "Today is Earth Day, the high holy day of modern pantheism. Perhaps you would consider reading this article to your children today." You can read the article his website.

I also suggest you listen to AiG's commentary on Earth Day on today's Answers … with Ken Ham radio program—see Earth Day–it's nothing but paganism.

Atheist Richard Dawkins: "Evangelical Christians Have Really Sort Of Got It Right"

As we approach the release date of the new book Already Compromised—and how it reveals massive biblical compromise in Christian colleges—I thought I would share the transcript of a video clip I have been using in some of my conference talks.

Last month, famous atheist and evolutionist Richard Dawkins was interviewed by Howard Condor on Revelation TV in the UK. Parts of the interview are disappointing regarding how the interviewer made some of his arguments. However, there was one section of the interview that is really worth publicizing.

At one stage, the interviewer asked, "So, was there a defining moment where you made a decision that you didn't believe in God?"

Richard Dawkins replied, "Yes . . . I suppose, I switched from Christian theism to some sort of deism about the age of fourteen or fifteen. And then switched to atheism about the age of sixteen—fifteen, sixteen."

Howard Condor then asks, "And was there a particular point, or something you read, or an experience you had that said, 'Yes this is it, God does not exist'?"

Now note carefully the following statement by Richard Dawkins:

Oh well, by far the most important was understanding evolution. I think the evangelical Christians have really sort of got it right in a way, in seeing evolution as the enemy. Whereas the more, what shall we say, sophisticated theologians are quite happy to live with evolution, I think they are deluded. I think the evangelicals have got it right, in that there is a deep incompatibility between evolution and Christianity, and I think I realized that about the age of sixteen.

I want you to note two things in particular:

For Richard Dawkins, who professes to be an atheist, evolution is his justification for rejecting the God of the Bible.
Richard Dawkins understands the Bible's account of origins more than many theologians. He does see that there is an irreconcilable conflict between the Bible and evolution. In fact, in other statements he has made in books and interviews, Dawkins says that the next step for these theologians is to reject the Bible totally. He applauds the theologians for believing in evolution, but he says "the writing is on the wall"—meaning that the next step is to realize the Bible can't be true.

It is so sad that compromise with evolution and millions of years permeates the church and Christian colleges. For atheists like Richard Dawkins, this is a good thing because he understands that compromise will cause coming generations to eventually walk away from the church, which is exactly what is already happening.

The new publication Already Compromised (released around May 1) details research conducted by American's Research Group on Christian colleges, showing rampant compromise through many of these institutions.

It's a shame so many of our Christian academics don't understand the Bible as much as Dawkins does on this issue of the Bible and evolution!

You can preorder a copy of Already Compromised.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Ken
