"Newspeak" from the Assemblies of God?
Last year I wrote a blog post about the revised Assemblies of God position paper on creation, evolution, millions of years, and the book of Genesis. I began that blog this way:
The general presbytery of the Assemblies of God (AG) denomination, in session August 9–11, 2010, adopted a revised statement on "The Doctrine of Creation." Here is an excerpt from the official AG position paper, that opens the door to evolution and millions of years, and the various compromise positions on Genesis held by some in the church (such as gap theory, day age, progressive creation, theistic evolution, etc.)
I then wrote a follow-up blog entitled, 'Assemblies of God Denomination Responds . . . but What Does It Really Mean?'
At Answers in Genesis, we heard of many Assembly of God pastors who were extremely upset that the denomination, known for taking a strong stand on a literal Genesis, had changed its position.
Well, recently the Assemblies of God adopted yet another position paper on creation. I have provided a link for this paper below. As I read through this new position, I was reminded of what we stated in the book Already Compromised (a book that deals with compromise in Christian Colleges) concerning what we called "Christian newspeak." What we meant by this term was that Christian leaders used words that sounded good, but they really meant something else.
In a way, the important thing is not as much of what this position paper does say, but rather what it doesn't say! Let me first of all tell you what this new position paper from the Assemblies of God on Genesis does not say:
It does not:
require a stand on six literal days
require belief that Adam was made from dust and Eve from his side
stand on a young earth
take a stand against millions of years
require no death, disease, thorns, suffering before sin
require belief in a global Flood
In other words, this new position paper does not get specific about what to believe concerning many details in Genesis. It seems to me it is written cleverly to sound orthodox, yet not require specific details, and thus in essence it allows for whatever position one wants to take on Genesis—as long as a person believes God created.
Because we have seen general statements like this new position paper used by pastors and Christian academics to justify their compromise with evolution and millions of years, Answers in Genesis is very specific in its Statement of Faith.
As I read this paper, "red flags" went up in regard to certain wording. For instance, the introduction states the following:
The Bible makes no claim to be a scientific textbook, nor should it be understood as such.
What is meant by this statement? In one sense I agree that the Bible is not written like a biology textbook or physics textbook, etc. In fact, I'm glad it is not like the textbooks written by fallible humans, since they change year after year as wrong information in them is fixed. However, this sort of statement is often used by those who claim the Bible is strictly "theological," and therefore one has to let scientists (fallible humans) make declarations concerning biology, geology, etc. Thus, when scientists make proclamations about evolution or millions of years, we are told we need to change our interpretation of Scripture to adjust for what the scientists say.
Answers in Genesis has many articles on the difference between operational science (the kind of science that builds our technology, which is based on repeatable tests), and historical science (knowledge gained from circumstantial evidence in the present to reconstruct the unobserved past). Certainly the Bible is primarily a book of history, but the Bible also touches on biology (created kinds), astronomy (creation of Sun, Moon, stars), geology (Flood of Noah's day), and anthropology (creation of Adam from dust and Eve from his side). And where the Bible touches on biology, geology, etc., it can and should be trusted. Now the next statement:
The discoveries of science had been utilized by skeptics to question the accuracy of the biblical accounts. In response, believing scientists and biblical scholars consider no fundamental conflict to exist between God's Word and His works. The theories of the scientists are constantly changing with the introduction of new evidence. By contrast, the Scriptures are always the final, unchanging authority for Christian faith.
This statement sounds good, but I have seen statements like this, "In response, believing scientists and biblical scholars consider no fundamental conflict to exist between God's Word and His works," used time and time again by Christian academics to claim there is no conflict between Genesis and evolutionary ideas. They claim that evolution corresponds to God's "works," and Genesis gives us the theological teaching that God is behind it all. Thus, they say, there is no conflict!
The point I want to make again is that this new paper does not outline any specific position in regard to Genesis—except that God is the Creator and He is behind it all. Actually, I believe this cleverly and vaguely written paper is very dangerous. It will sound orthodox to many, but in reality it does not exclude theistic evolution, the gap theory, millions of years, the day-age theory, progressive creation, the framework hypothesis, or any other compromise position on Genesis.
It's not so much what this new position paper says, but what it doesn't say. And what it doesn't say makes the case that what it does say is really "Christian newspeak." What is extremely telling (which I believe confirms this), is that in the AG's 1977 position paper on "The Doctrine of Creation, " we read these specific statements:
This Bible record of creation thus rules out the evolutionary philosophy which states that all forms of life have come into being by gradual, progressive evolution carried on by resident forces. It also rules out any evolutionary origin for the human race, since no theory of evolution, including theistic evolution, can explain the origin of the male before thefemale, nor can it explain how a man could evolve into a woman. ("The Doctrine of Creation," 1977, http://ministers.ag.org/pdf/Creation.pdf, accessed 11/8/10)
Such specific statements are no longer a part of this new and very general position paper that unlocks the door to whatever position a person wants to hold on Genesis, as long as he believes God created.
You can see the newly revised creation position paper on the Assembly of God website.

NewSong at the Creation Museum
We were privileged yesterday at the Creation Museum, when members of the singing group NewSong (currently on a radio tour) stopped in to visit. One of the lead vocalists mentioned he was very excited about the highly professional level of the exhibits and the evangelistic nature of the museum. Others in the group told me they had never seen anything quite like it and were looking forward to sharing the ministry of Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum with people they meet on the road.
The Creation Museum has just recently developed a partnership with NewSong to promote the Creation Museum on their Winter Jam tour, which hosted over 580,000 attendees this past January through March (largest Christian tour in America during those months). I had the opportunity to give them a personal tour of the museum, and we also gave them a behind-the-scenes look into the upcoming Ark Encounter project. We praise God for Eddie Carswell, the founder of NewSong, for his uncompromising stand of the Word of God! See my photo taken with the group yesterday:
It's an Ape . . . It's a Human . . . It's . . . a Missing Link!
The lead article on the Answers in Genesis website today is another in a series we are producing to respond to the recent publicity surrounding the so called evolutionary ancestor of humans, sediba. The article is written by friend of Answers in Genesis, Dr. David A. DeWitt. Dr. DeWitt received his PhD in neuroscience from Case Western Reserve University. He is currently the chair of the Department of Biology and Chemistry and the director of the Center for Creation Studies at Liberty University. Dr. DeWitt is the author of Unraveling the Origins Controversy and has written a number of articles on the topic of human origins.

Rave Reviews
We continue to get rave reviews for Diana Waring's history curricula (for High School) published by Answers in Genesis. We have teamed up with Diana Waring, one of the most recognizable names in homeschooling, to bring you this unique and comprehensive world history curriculum, History Revealed.
Volume 1 is Ancient Civilizations and the Bible, which takes you on a journey from creation to Christ, covering the major events, civilizations, and personalities in the first 4,000 years of world history. Volume 2 is Romans, Reformers, Revolutionaries, which covers the early church to the French revolution. Volume 3, World Empires, World Missions, World Wars, will be available in the Spring of 2010.
Each volume is a one-year history curriculum that includes a teacher guide, student manual, testing kit, audio CDs, and an optional elementary activity book for the younger students so that all ages can participate in this exciting study of world history.
Here is an email received this past week about the curriculum History Revealed: Ancient Civilizations and the Bible:
I am happily married with 2 children. . . . This is our 8th year of homeschooling. I have been a lurker for quite a few years and have had this curriculum on the shelf for at least 2 years. After a couple years of gaining wisdom from the people in this group, we have finally started AC&B this year.
The reason I post is not to brag but to say thank you to Diana for giving me the freedom to let my children learn in a way that they learn best. I would just like to tell of some things that I saw as we went through the first unit.
My daughter, who learns well any way you teach her, did her usual good quality work all throughout the first 3 phases. When we got to phase 4 she REALLY blossomed. She has enjoyed this week so much. She can't wait to get to the computer to work on her "secret" project and she is also working on staging to put on a show for dad at the end of the week.
My son, who is not the typical "sit at your desk" student, has really enjoyed this curriculum so far. He has spent hours reading the pocket guides from AIG and also our Answers magazines. We have subscribed to this for a few years and this is the first time I think he really took notice of them. He asked the other day if we could get him his own subscription to the magazine for Christmas:) He has compiled a tri-fold board with information he has learned and wants to show it to his neighbors who believe in millions of years. He has also researched the subject of radioactive dating and has chosen to do a little paper on John Dalton because he is fascinated by atoms. Now, again, I must say I am not writing this to brag but to point out that I would have NEVER taken the time to teach a ten year old about atoms and radioactive dating. I don't understand it and to me it is not interesting. Also, it would not have fit into the "schedule." This curriculum is a blessing to us. Thank you!!

Vividly Recalling 9/11
Today is one of those anniversaries in American history that is even being remembered worldwide, and it's not just a U.S. commemoration. I have very vivid memories of that date 10 years ago when four hijacked planes crashed in three different areas of America (New York; Washington, D.C.; and Pennsylvania).
I urge you to read the lead article today on our website's homepage and discover how this horrible tragedy (that took about 3,000 lives) gave Christians an opportunity to share their faith in the midst of a terrible time. You will also be directed to a link where you can read our witnessing booklet on the question of death and suffering—a booklet that was written almost 10 years ago and printed in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Perhaps you can share that link with family members and friends who are dealing with their own tragedies and might be wondering, "Where is God during my times of suffering?"

Why?
Recently on my Facebook page, I stated the following concerning a Fox News poll: "If it accurately represents the population in the USA, then why is evolution taught as fact in schools? Why do secularists have so much control over what is taught? I think there are a number of reasons and will comment later."
The poll question concerning creation/evolution were as follows:
Which do you think is more likely to actually be the explanation for the origin of human life on Earth:
The theory of evolution as outlined by Darwin and other scientists
The Biblical account of creation as told in the Bible,
or Are both true?
45-50% responded, "The Biblical account of creation as told in the Bible." Now although many people when questioned deeply might have different views on what they mean by this, I ask again, "Why do secularists have so much control over what is taught? Why is creation excluded from public schools and only the religion of evolution taught—and taught as fact?"
I think there are many reasons—but here are some:
Many Christians have not been taught how to defend the Christian faith and answer skeptical questions and are thus easily intimidated by scientists. If Churches taught apologetics to young people and adults and equipped their people to understand the creation/evolution issue properly, with knowledge on how to answer questions, this would encourage more Christians to be vocal about these issues. Instead, the secularists are the very vocal ones and Christians have by and large sat back and allowed them to take over the education system etc.
I find many Christians have been indoctrinated in the false notion of neutrality. Atheists try to make out they are not religious, whereas Christians are supposedly the religious ones. Actually, there are ultimately only two religions in the world—one either starts with God's Word or Man's word. Atheists basically worship man. Their faith starting point is that man determines truth and the Bible is not true. The Bible teaches clearly one is either for Christ or against—there is no neutral position. When creation, Bible, and prayer were basically thrown out of public schools, many Christians were indoctrinated to believe that the schools are now neutral—but they are not—they are against Christ (even though there are some Christians as missionaries in the system). Christians have been brainwashed into thinking that if they stand for the Bible, they are imposing their religion on the schools/culture—but in standing back and basically allowing this situation, they have allowed secularists to impose their anti-God religion on the system.
I find most Christians don't understand that evolution and millions of years are a direct attack on the authority of Scripture. So many Christian leaders have compromised with man's pagan religion to explain life without God, that many in the churches don't comprehend that this undermines biblical authority and over time, coming generations begin walking away from the church. Right now we are seeing two-thirds of young people walking away from the church by the time they reach college age. That is why we published the book Already Gone to wake the church up in regard to this matter.
Of course, there are many other factors we could consider also—but the above I believe a major reasons contributing to the problem in our culture that has allowed the secularists to impose their religion on this nation in a big way.
At Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum, we are pouring out information daily to equip and challenge people concerning the truth of God's Word beginning in Genesis. For example, we try to keep up with latest developments and be "always ready" to give responses for why you can trust the Word of God. We've received may requests to discuss the latest on the sediba find, and you can see that we have a preliminary response and will be providing in-depth analysis over the next few days. We need to raise up generations who are prepared to stand boldly for the authority of the Word of God and stand up to this small minority (yes, it is a minority, and yes it is a SMALL minority) of secularists who control the education of most children.
By the way, you can read the results of this poll for yourself at www.foxnews.com/us/2011/09/07/fox-news-poll-creationism/

Canceled Speaking Engagements
Recently, Answers in Genesis speaker and researcher Dr. Georgia Purdom was interviewed on a radio program. As a result, the radio host lost some speaking engagements. Dr. Purdom wrote the following about this situation:
I was shocked and saddened to think that speaking the truth about God's Word had led to some of her speaking engagements being canceled. Yet, this type of scenario is becoming more common in the Christian community as it compromises on God's truth.
Because compromising God's Word in Genesis is a problem of epidemic proportions in our churches, I urge you to read Dr. Purdom's blog post on this issue.

Unbelievable Condition of Many of Our Churches
More and more Christians are realizing that in reality the biggest battle we have right now is within much of the church. How can we witness to the world when much of the church and even many Christian schools have adopted the world's anti-God religion of evolutionary beliefs, including the idea of millions of years?
This recent letter of testimony from a pastor's wife is important for all of us to read:
Unbelievable! That seems to be the word to describe the condition of our "Christian" churches & schools today. The false beliefs of the lost secular world, which are somewhat expected due to their spiritual condition, have crept into our churches and allowed compromise to infiltrate the body of believers and permeate the entire Christian world – unbelievable!
. . . I am a pastor's wife and homeschool mother of three. My first eye-opening experience occurred two years ago when my then 7th grader wanted to play football. As a homeschooler in our community he could not play unless he became a "student" of the school. To make a long story short, we enrolled him p/t in a Christian school. He took three classes, one of which was earth science. Within a couple of weeks, my son was coming home telling us things that his teacher said such as: "God could use any method he wanted to create – as He can do anything" – I was flabbergasted! We had a conference with the teacher, who openly and boldly proclaimed to be a Christian, yet allowed the "science mind" to alter her presuppositions and interfere with the biblical worldview thus compromising God's Word!!
Realization had slapped me in the face! I was going to have to do a better job of providing a solid biblical answer for my children to be able to refute these types of teachings/influences and uphold and defend the authority of the Word of God. As I had used some AIG materials in the past, I began to search the website for more information and resources. Wow! What I found was a not only an incredible amount of creation resources available to purchase, but also a wealth of free information, downloads, and resources to assist me in being prepared to give an answer. We have since purchased and used several AIG resources for our family as well as for our church (Answers Academy, Kid Answers, several great dvds). We are currently using "Demolishing Strongholds" and "It All Begins in Genesis" curriculums throughout our church services. Wow– awesome materials! I am truly learning how to defend my faith as well as "be prepared to give an answer to any man that asketh" II Peter 3:15.
I never realized the intensity and the animosity that some people demonstrate in the battle regarding creation science – especially in the churches! After reading "Already Gone" and "Already Compromised", I am passionately convinced that we must stand up and defend the Word of God from the very first verse in Genesis. As the Psalmist stated, "If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do."
I want to say "Thank you" . . . for having a vision of bringing reformation to our churches by standing on the foundations of Truth and establishing the AIG ministry. Thank you for your mission to proclaim the truth of the Bible and the message of the gospel with boldness. Thanks also to the entire AIG staff for the outstanding job of providing believers with invaluable resources in which to equip them to defend their faith boldly and without compromise! I so much appreciate your ministry. May God bless you abundantly as you serve Him!
Now, we acknowledge that not all churches and Christian schools are like this. She is writing about her experience with one school, and we're thankful for schools that uphold the authority of the Bible from the very first verse.

International Press on the Ark Encounter
This past Friday, a reporter and a photographer from Stockholm, Sweden, were here at the Creation Museum to write an article about the museum and the future full-size Noah's Ark at the Ark Encounter attraction south of the museum. The global interest in the Ark project has exceeded our expectations since the Kentucky governor first made the Ark announcement late last year from the state capitol. In fact, below is a list of print editions of international newspapers (in addition to dozens of U.S. papers and websites) that recently ran an Associated Press syndicated news story on our Ark Encounter. The ones below all appeared during the last part of August. (The AP article, as it appeared on the Fox news website, can be read at this link.)
August 22. Shanghai Daily. Shanghai, People's Republic of China. "Ark park deluged by queries." Page B2. Includes photo.
August 27. The Guardian. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. "New Noah's Ark theme park project seeks to show Bible's stories are true." Includes photo.
August 25. Pravda. Bratislava, Slovakia. "Noe dotácie nemal, jeho nasledovníciod štátudostanú." Includes photo.
August 22. UjSzo. Bratislava, Slovakia. Hungarian language newspaper. "FelépítikNoé bárkáját." Includes photo.
August 21. SunStar. Cebu City, Philippines. "New Noah's Ark theme park aims to prove Bible."
All of these have been added to the special website where Ark-related articles are being cataloged: http://wiki.creation.org/2011_Ark_Encounter_news

They Heard the Message
Yesterday at the Creation Museum, 35 signers helped hearing-impaired people (attending our special "Deaf Day") hear the message of the Creation Museum. Actually, most of the museum's videos, as well as the Planetarium, have close captioning—but the signers helped in other areas and in ministering to these with a hearing impairment.
Here are photographs taken throughout the day that give you a little glimpse into what it was like at the Creation Museum for "Deaf Day."
Praise the Lord we are able to conduct special outreaches like this. And thank you to all the signers who gave of their time to make this a special day. And thanks to LaRosa's Pizza for providing them lunch and Kroger groceries for the bottled water.

They Can't Even Get the Question Right!
On a website called Public Policy Polling, it was stated that "PPP surveyed 600 likely Kentucky voters from August 25th to 28th. The margin of error for the survey is +/-4.0%. This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews. PPP is a Democratic polling company, but polling expert Nate Silver of the New York Times found that its surveys in 2010 actually exhibited a slight bias toward Republican candidates."
In its preliminary comments, PPP refers to one of the poll questions asked of Kentuckians and states, "There has been some controversy, mostly from the left, over Gov. Steve Beshear approving state funds to build the Ark Encounter, a theme park featuring a life-sized replica of Noah's Ark. But 59% of the state's voters oppose their tax dollars going toward the park, and only 26% support it. Independents are most opposed, 17–72, joining Democrats (23-62) and even Republicans (34–51)."
Now, when you read the question that was asked, you realize that not only did the PPP ask the wrong question, it actually made a false statement in its question and in the summary referred to above. Here is what it wrote concerning question seven in the poll:
Q7 Do you support or oppose taxpayer funds
going to build the Ark Encounter, a theme park
featuring a life-sized replica of Noah's Ark?
Support taxpayer funds going toward it……….. 26%
Oppose it ……………………………………………….. 59%
Not sure …………………………………………………. 14%
So what is wrong with this question? Simply that it is wrong to claim that "taxpayers funds" are "going to build the Ark Encounter"! The Ark Encounter, a for-profit company, filed for a tax incentive under the Kentucky Tourism Development Act to bring more tourism to the state. An independent study by the Kentucky government was carried out and it was recommended that Ark Encounter receive this tax incentive—which is a rebate on sales tax generated by the park and from only within the park—just as any other for-profit company could.
You know what? Based on the survey's wording, I would have told pollsters that I opposed the Ark project's funding!
It is interesting to note that the Kentucky Speedway (a racetrack) not only received this same tax incentive, but recently was granted an extension to receive these sales tax rebates for another 10 years. Why is it that the poll didn't ask if Kentucky taxpayers supported that incentive? Why is it that the Ark Encounter is singled out? Is it because the Ark Encounter is a Christian theme park, and much of the media is so anti-Christian (especially the two largest newspapers in the state), that the truth about this park and the incentives have been grossly distorted? If anything, the question and the results of the polling question illustrate that the left-wing media have brainwashed people into believing a lie about the tax incentive program—the best state incentive program in the nation!
Note in its summary, PPP states, "There has been some controversy, mostly from the left, over Gov. Steve Beshear approving state funds to build the Ark Encounter, a theme park featuring a life-sized replica of Noah's Ark. But 59% of the state's voters oppose their tax dollars going toward the park . . ."
What a highly misleading statement. Not only will the Ark Encounter add millions of dollars in funds to the State, but the project doesn't take from the state funds. The Ark Encounter receives a percentage rebate of sales tax generated within the park, and as a result of the park being built, thousands of jobs will be generated and millions of dollars injected into the State treasury and local economy! Also, taxpayers will not have their "tax dollars going toward the park." This is just plain wrong! No one's tax dollars (state or federal) go to the park. Again, the incentive is a rebate on sales tax generated within the park!
Let me put it another way. In fact, let me put it in words that even a child can understand. I do this in the hope that perhaps the secular media and those behind this polling organization may actually be willing (depending on how strong their anti-Christian agenda is) to acknowledge the truth:
No taxpayer funds will be used to build the park—none! No taxpayer funds will be used for any part of the construction—none! No taxpayer funds will be used to subsidize the park—none! The park is totally (that means 100 percent) privately funded. No taxpayer funds contribute to any of the private funding—none!
While the park is under construction, please be aware that millions of dollars will be injected into the economy. During construction and after the Ark Encounter is opened, people will be employed and the state will receive money from taxes, payroll taxes, etc. Construction workers will stay in hotels and buy items in the area, and taxes for the state will be generated. Once the park is completed (and it will be totally—that means 100 percent—paid for by this for-profit company), it will open its doors. Millions will come to the park over the years. As they come, visitors will buy goods including gas for their cars, many will stay in hotels, and visitors will pay for flights and rental cars etc. etc. Hundreds will be employed within the park and hundreds more (in fact thousands) of other jobs related to tourism will be created. In addition, all these people employed will pay taxes. Visitors who come to the park will pay taxes at hotels and also as they purchase other items.
Now, within the park, those who come will pay sales tax on items. The Kentucky Tourism Development Act, in an effort to attract companies to build in Kentucky so they can generate funds for the local economy and the state, allows for (if the company qualifies according to strict rules) a percentage rebate on sales tax generated within the park after it opens for 10 years. This money goes to those groups who privately funded it as a return on their investment—it is the government's way (and it is a brilliant concept) of attracting such groups to invest in Kentucky.
I repeat: no taxpayer funds are used in any way for the construction of the park. And not only that, but the independent study that was commissioned by the Kentucky government to find out if the Ark Encounter qualified for this tourism tax incentive was paid for by the Ark Encounter. In fact, no taxpayer funds were used for the independent study—none.
In summary and to be crystal clear:
1. The Ark Encounter LLC (a for-profit group) will fund the entire project. No state funds will be used to build or operate the Ark Encounter. The tax incentives will not be a grant from state funds to help build the Ark Encounter; no money will come out of someone else's pocket; no funds will be taken from the state budget and away from state programs (e.g., social services, schools, etc.) to help build and/or operate the Ark Encounter.
2. The only taxpayers to pay any taxes related to the operation of the Ark Encounter will be the Ark Encounter visitors themselves. They will pay sales tax at the attraction (e.g., on tickets, food, and merchandise), and at the end of each year of operation, the state will rebate a portion of the sales tax to the Ark Encounter LLC based on meeting attendance-performance standards.
Now, the above explanation is so different from what so many in the secular media are claiming, and what the atheists are declaring on websites and blogs. And this is so different from what this Public Policy Polling website has claimed! So if it really is that simple—and no taxpayer funds are being used for the construction of this park—and the park will generate millions of dollars for the state of Kentucky—then why are these blatantly false claims being made? I suggest it is because Ark Encounter happens to be a Christian park with a Christian theme.
So whatever happened to the First Amendment in all this? If you recall, the amendment prohibits the making of any law "respecting an establishment of religion" and impeding the "free exercise of religion." "Free exercise of religion"? I think that's been interpreted these days by the media and secular humanists as "free exercise of religion—except for Christianity, which we cannot allow!"
Now, what is the point of reading such an unreliable poll? You can if you want at the link below, but if question seven is so falsely worded, and incorrectly reported on—how can one trust any part of this poll? This certainly illustrates that PPP is not a trustworthy poll site at all—but someone's propaganda machine, which appears to have an anti-Christian bias.
