The Stand Against the Bible’s Teaching on Marriage—Coming from Parts of the Church!
Last week, the compromise happening in many mainstream denominations and among many professing Christians on homosexual behavior was given a very public platform. On September 4, the NALT Christians Project was launched, asking professing Christians to submit videos of themselves voicing their support for practicing homosexuals and transgender people.
The Religion News Service reported that “the NALT project aims to be a platform for Christians who post videos in support. . . . Supporters of the project include The Evangelical Network, Auburn Seminary, and the gay Catholic group Dignity USA. The project is spearhead [sic] by Christian blogger John Shore and Wayne Besen, from Truth Wins Out, which was founded to ‘fight anti-gay religious extremism.’”
The RNS also reported that Shore stated, “It’s time for us true NALT Christians—the ones who genuinely aren’t like that—to speak up and be heard, to affirm LGBT people as loudly and clearly as anti-LGBT Christians condemn them.”
The videos include church leaders and church attendees, from a variety of denominational backgrounds (Baptist, Episcopal, United Methodist, “evangelical,” and so on). Now, I viewed many of these videos—and the amount of compromise from these professing Christians was shocking!
For instance, in one video, the biblical view of marriage is referred to as a “knock-off of Christianity” by a Presbyterian minister. Another woman says she supports gay rights because to oppose them “doesn’t feel right” to her. An Episcopal priest tells viewers about the float her church sponsors in the Albuquerque, New Mexico, gay pride parade each year.
A United Methodist pastor in Hollywood, California, tells viewers that the book that influenced his faith the most had the subtitle, “taking the Bible seriously, but not literally.” Another United Methodist pastor says that it is “very consistent” for Christians to practice homosexual behavior or transgender behavior and to be part of the Christian community or even be leaders in the church.
A Pentecostal bishop urges Christians to accept homosexual behavior and to “walk together by faith and in the love of God” with Christians who practice such behavior. And a pastor uses his video to explain away all of the Bible’s prohibitions against homosexual behavior, using typical arguments that are easily debunked. (For more on how to handle arguments from pro-gay Bible scholars, see Steve Golden’s article titled Pro-Gay Theology: Does the Bible Approve of Homosexuality?)
What’s the common theme in the statements these church leaders and members make? They don’t respect the authority of Scripture when it comes to marriage, gender, and sexuality. Of course, many of them claim that they affirm homosexual and transgender behavior because they believe the Bible does—but Scripture is very clear that marriage is between one man and one woman, and that sex is to remain within the confines of marriage.
In Genesis 2, the standard was that one man would leave his mother and father and cleave to one woman, his wife (Genesis 2:24). Jesus Christ reaffirmed this definition of marriage in Matthew 19:4–5. We can trust that what God’s Word says is true—and His Word can be understood whether or not we are Bible scholars:
And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?” (Matthew 19:4–5)
Now, one of the goals of NALT’s campaign is to speak out against bullying and violence against those practicing homosexual and transgender behavior. And as Christians we must acknowledge that any brutality—verbal or physical—directed at one individual from another is wrong because man is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26; 9:6). We at Answers in Genesis do not support this sort of behavior because it is unbiblical treatment of someone made in God’s image.
But that does not change that homosexual behavior is unacceptable behavior for Christians. The Apostle Paul makes it clear that Christians are expected to leave such sinful lifestyles behind and to follow Christ:
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9–11)
The church needs to wake up to what is happening here in the U.S. and what is going to happen if things continue this way. I urge you to pray for these Christians involved in NALT, that they would turn back to the authority of God’s Word in every area.
It’s sad when it is not just the world that is against the obvious biblical teaching on marriage—but parts of the church. One expects the world to be against the Bible, but the church should be light and salt standing for biblical authority

Intolerance Against Christians from Gay Activists
Christians continue to be negatively affected by the homosexual rights movement. Recently, a Christian-owned bakery called Sweet Cakes by Melissa announced that they would be closing their doors because of the backlash they received after refusing to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding.
Fox News reported that the bakery owners refused to bake the cake for a lesbian couple and consequently had a government investigation launched against them for possible discrimination. The news report included an alarming quote from a city official:
Commissioner Brad Avakian told The Oregonian that he was committed to a fair and thorough investigation to determine whether the bakery discriminated against the lesbians.
“Everybody is entitled to their own beliefs, but that doesn’t mean that folks have the right to discriminate,” he told the newspaper. “The goal is to rehabilitate. For those who do violate the law, we want them to learn from that experience and have a good, successful business in Oregon.”
The secular world has determined that Christians who hold to a biblical view of marriage—that marriage is between one man and one woman, according to Genesis and many places in the Bible—need to be “rehabilitated.” Our culture has given up the authority of God’s Word to the point where biblical morality is considered some sort of illness requiring rehabilitation!
This event is just another indicator of the increasing intolerance and persecution of Christianity in the USA. What’s more, the owners of the bakery also received threats from those who disagreed with their decision:
Within days, militant homosexuals groups launched protests and boycotts. Klein told me he received messages threatening to kill his family. They hoped his children would die. The LGBT protestors then turned on other wedding vendors around the community. They threatened to boycott any florists, wedding planners or other vendors that did business with Sweet Cakes By Melissa.
I hope and pray the church wakes up to what is happening and what is going to happen if things continue like this in this nation. Sadly, the leadership of the USA has fostered this. I believe this sort of intolerance will become more and more common as the US government embraces and promotes homosexual marriage and other views that conflict with the clear Word of God.
I urge you to pray for Christians like these bakery owners, who stand boldly on the authority of Scripture in the face of intolerance, and to pray for our government leaders, that they would turn back to the authority of God’s Word.
We applaud believers who take a stand for biblical marriage and who won’t accept the business of a gay couple intending to “marry” and snubbing God’s Word about marriage. At the same time, we welcome the “business” of anyone coming to our Creation Museum, regardless of their worldview. You see, with our exhibits, we share with all visitors that the Bible is God’s Word and it presents the basis of true marriage.

Review: Counseling the Hard Cases
During my time in Australia, I’ve asked a number of Answers in Genesis staff members to contribute posts to my blog.
Today’s short blog post comes from Steve Ham, our director of outreach. Steve has a heart for the biblical counseling movement, and recently reviewed a book on the subject called Counseling the Hard Cases, edited by Dr. Stuart Scott and Heath Lambert.
I’ve included the introductory paragraphs of Steve’s review below.
Recently I had the opportunity to read and review the book Counseling the Hard Cases. This book places the biblical counseling movement on display as it reports the process and outcomes of real-life counseling cases. As a biblical creationist, I was continually encouraged to find the counselors’ dedication to the sufficiency of Scripture for helping real people with real problems. While preparing a review of this book as a graduate student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, I became even more aware of the consistency between the positions of biblical creation and biblical counseling concerning the authority of God’s Word and its sufficiency in the lives of all believers.
Biblical Authority and Medical ScienceI noticed the strong correlations between biblical creationists and biblical counselors in the first chapter of Counseling the Hard Cases. Both positions face accusations revolving around the nature of authority and science. For example, many “Christian counselors” are convinced that the use of such treatments as hypnosis or psychotropic drugs are based on strong scientific research and analysis. Persuaded that this research comes from an authoritative source, they then integrate it into their counseling methodology.
Like most “Christian counselors,” trained biblical counselors typically take great care to refer counselees to doctors for necessary medical diagnosis and treatment of their physical ailments. However, for spiritual issues the biblical counselor seeks to ensure that Scripture is seen as the supreme authority and sufficient to help all believers deal with trial (suffering) or sin in their lives. Biblical counselors also should acquaint themselves with the research related to such things as medication, noting which recommendations are based upon repeatable, testable observations and which are based on assumptions influenced by a secular worldview. This is also why biblical counselors prefer to work in partnership with physicians who are Bible-believing Christians. . . .
Steve added the following:
Here is a link to the full review of this book that is posted to our website today.
Dr. Stuart Scott is associate professor of biblical counseling at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky Dr. Scott will be a featured speaker at the upcoming Answers for Pastors conference, to be held in Legacy Hall at the Creation Museum, October 8–10, 2013.
I urge you to register for this excellent conference.

BioLogos vs. Bible-Based Apologetics
BioLogos, an organization that seeks to teach Christians that evolutionary ideas are supposedly compatible with Scripture, continues to try to influence families toward giving up a historical Genesis. A recent article appeared on the BioLogos website written by Praveen Sethupathy, an assistant professor of genetics at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Titled “Conversing With Our Children about Creation and Evolution,” the article by Sethupathy explains where he believes the church has gone wrong in the origins debate.
He writes that he desires to honor God’s Word as the authority when it comes to our origins:
It is troubling to me that some of our communities teach that one, and only one, interpretation of Genesis 1–2 should be accepted as Biblical. For example, I am aware of churches across our country where young earth creationism (YEC) is taught as the only legitimate Christian position, Vacation Bible School curricula are devoted entirely to YEC, and Sunday school libraries are filled with books that teach that there is a Biblical imperative to believe that dinosaurs and humans co-inhabited the earth. It is important to note that such hardline positions often arise not out of malice, but out of a heartfelt desire, which I passionately share, to respect the authority of the Word of God. But I believe that we must be equally cautious about forcing interpretations that Scripture itself does not demand.
Now, Genesis 1–2 are obvious in what they demand as an interpretation. In fact, this is the focus of my newest book (to be released this fall)—Six Days: The Age of the Earth and the Decline of the Church. In it, I show how many Christian academics and pastors are abandoning the plain meaning of the text of Genesis in favor of popular views of our origins, all of which are rooted in millions of years, evolution, or both.
Sethupathy’s view is indicative of this very epidemic. He finds it “troubling” that many churches hold firmly to a historical Genesis (and really, to the authority of God’s Word) and teach it to their children. He continues, “I now mentor students who were taught to view a single position on Genesis 1–2 as a central tenet of their faith, and in some instances were actively discouraged from expressing their doubts or openly wrestling with their questions.” Now, we at Answers in Genesis certainly don’t discourage people from critical thinking—in fact, we encourage it! Parents, teachers, and church leaders should teach children to think critically about the assumptions underlying various evolutionary ideas.
Parents must teach their children solid, biblically based apologetics, and that includes engaging evolutionary ideas from the biblical perspective. So many Christians who have compromised with evolution and millions of years end up abandoning a proper interpretation of Scripture (using the historical-grammatical hermeneutic) when it comes to Genesis chapters 1–11 because “science” (i.e., evolutionary ideas) says that the universe is billions of years old. But they have no problem with the miracle of the Virgin Birth or the Resurrection!
Now, I’ve said and written numerous times (and I make this point in my new book as well) that a belief in a young earth is not a salvation issue—but it is an authority and a gospel issue! What’s to stop the person who has denied the miracle of creation in Genesis 1 from denying the miracle of the Resurrection—a doctrine, according to the Apostle Paul, that is absolutely central to our faith (1 Corinthians 15:17)?
Sethupathy offers as support for his idea a short story of how his son Caedmon wrote a story about a world where God uses a “process” to create. Sethupathy writes, “Creation by process made God seem more powerful and real to Caedmon, not less.” But it’s not our feelings or experiences that determine what Scripture means—it’s the plain words of Genesis 1–2 that tell us how the world came to be. Creation by speaking the universe into existence from nothing doesn’t make God any less powerful, and He doesn’t need us to find ways to make His method of creation “seem more powerful.”
The answer is simple: God created the universe and everything in it in six, approximately 24-hour days. Parents, teach your children what the Word of God says, and teach them how to think critically about evolutionary ideas and assumptions in light of the highest authority in our lives—the Bible. Astonished to Hear Clear Answers
I love to share testimonies to encourage you regarding the impact of the ministry of AiG. Here are a couple that Dr. Andrew Snelling (Director of Research, AiG) received recently:
A Swiss gentleman wrote the following:
Yesterday evening we went to have dinner with some colleagues from work. One man—he has a doctor-degree in microbiology (the Nestlé plant I work for “produces” about 80 tons of microorganisms per year)—was quite astonished to hear clear answers from the Bible on scientific questions. We also talked about the fact, that information in the DNA (or information at all) is neither mass nor energy and has to have an intelligent source, since information cannot become into being by random chance. All these answers I could not have given if I hadn’t had all the resources AiG makes available.
Also, a young professional geologist wrote this:
It was indeed wonderful to meet on the field trip. It is humbling to hear that I could be an encouragement to you, because I was certainly blessed. I have not had the time to dive into “Earth’s Catastrophic Past” [a two-volume book written by Dr. Snelling] just yet (I am working to finish a couple of reports on core drilling projects from this year), but I am reading articles and journals with a vigor that I have honestly NEVER had. Whether it is reviewing results of crush strength tests for our different frac sand deposits or reading about depositional history here in the Blue Ridge, I am now first thinking of how the data supports a young earth model!
Dr. Andrew Snelling commented on the above testimony:
A bit of background will also help. The gentleman from Switzerland was an international attendee at our Answers Mega Conference in July in Sevierville, Tennessee. He came to me with written questions translated from Russian for me to answer by email for a believer in Russia—a Tatar who is a construction worker in Bashkiria, 20 years a Christian, who attends a Baptist church. His questions were on geology, creation, and the Flood. I have answered them for this Swiss supporter, who has sent them for translation into Russian before sending them to this man. I also sent details of the Foundations DVD series in Russian and contacts for him to obtain a copy. So the AiG worldwide ministry is just that!

This is the cover of one of the Russian-language editions of the Foundations DVDs by Ken Ham.
The young geologist told me that he had strayed from the faith because he questioned the Bible due to his geology training. But his father had put my DVDs and other AiG literature in his hands, so that his faith was rescued and he now sees geology differently, as he says in his testimonial comments I quote above from his email.

From Arizona to the Middle East
Many of my recent thoughts about AiG’s various outreaches have been revolving around what is happening globally. This is not only because I am out of the country and in Australia to visit family (I also spoke in a Queensland church this past Sunday), but also because of so many AiG creation-gospel outreaches happening abroad.
For my blog post today, I am sharing an international report from AiG researcher, writer, and popular speaker Dr. Terry Mortenson. He starts with what recently happened in northern Arizona that eventually helped with the global outreach of AiG:
Ken,
There have been several exciting recent developments in the worldwide spread of the truth of Genesis and the evidence in confirmation of that truth.
In July, I helped lead our sixth annual, by-invitation-only (and heavily scholarshipped) eight-day trip through Grand Canyon on the Colorado River. Participants included seminary and Christian college professors of Old Testament, theology, and apologetics and other key Christian leaders.
This year we had two men from England, one from Canada, and twenty from the United States. The trip was led by Canyon Ministries’ founder (Tom Vail), Dr. Bill Barrick (Old Testament professor at The Master’s Seminary), Dr. Andrew Snelling (geologist at AiG), and me.
One Old Testament professor on the trip this year regularly ministers to seminary students and Christian leaders in the Middle East. On this raft trip through the Grand Canyon, he was strengthened in his faith in Genesis and in his understanding of the scientific evidence that confirms Genesis and its account of the Flood. Since the trip I have been able to put him in touch with an Egyptian doctor in Scotland who is a strong AiG supporter and is translating and developing lots of creation resources in the Arabic language. Those two men hope to meet in the Middle East sometime to discuss ways that their ministries can complement each other in that part of the world. Also, this OT prof has recommended a key Middle Eastern theologian to attend the 2014 Grand Canyon trip, and that man is checking his schedule because he would very much like to come.
I first met the Egyptian doctor several years ago when he attended some training here at Answers in Genesis in Kentucky. In 2011 he invited me to speak in Scotland and Egypt. He and his contacts translated my PowerPoint slides into Arabic for my seven talks, and he was my interpreter as I spoke. He has since used those slides to help produce 26 programs on creation for satellite TV and the Internet, with a view to producing about 100 more programs. You can get a taste of the first-class quality of these Arabic programs in this YouTube video. The programs are aired at www.malakootsat.com. I just received word from the doctor that an Arabic-speaking person in the Middle East has already trusted in Christ as Savior and Lord because of the programs.
Here is the Arabic cover of Ken’s dinosaur book for children:
And here is the Arabic version of Ken’s evangelistic booklet on why God allows death and suffering:
The Chinese WorldAnother exciting development involves the massive country of China. Recently the Chinese Creation Science Association (CCSA, 中华创造科学协会) was launched because the teaching of evolution and millions of years is one of the biggest barriers to the gospel among Chinese people and undermines the faith of many Christians (just as such teaching is doing throughout the world). The CCSA is starting its efforts among the Chinese in North America, but the goal is to spread to mainland China as soon as possible. They are planning work in these areas:
1. Dissemination among the Chinese-speaking world of existing creation materials in Chinese or other languages via the website and other means.
2. Translation of existing creation materials into Chinese.
3. Teaching by providing qualified Chinese-language speakers on creation.
4. Production of original creation materials in Chinese for lay and technical audiences.
5. Research to publish original, peer-reviewed creation research in Chinese, including the establishment of a periodic journal and the sponsorship of creation research initiatives.
If you are interested or know someone who is interested in helping, contact CCSA through the following websites: www.chuangzaokexue.com or www.chinesecreationscience.com.
We praise God for what He is doing to raise up gifted people to develop critically needed resources to expose the lie of evolution and millions of years and to proclaim the truth of Genesis, which is the foundation of the gospel (Genesis 3). In this way, millions of people who are living in spiritual darkness in the Middle East and in the Chinese part of the world can hear a compelling presentation of the gospel. Let us pray that through these many efforts thousands will trust in Christ and multitudes of Christians will be strengthen in their faith.
– Terry
To schedule Terry as an excellent speaker on biblical apologetics, including for Sunday services (he is seminary educated), encourage your pastor to request an event on our website.

Free Trips to the Creation Museum and the Zip Line Course!
By now you may have heard about our fantastic new zip line course here at the Creation Museum. Among our many promotional efforts to get the word out, we have posted about a hundred billboards spread out over six metropolitan areas. Here is one of the billboards:
The zip line course—the biggest in the Midwest—includes over 23 lines (with a dual zip line that is over 1,700 feet long), 10 sky bridges, and an Aerial Challenge Course.
Now your group can take a trip to our spectacular Creation Museum and the zip lines—and we will help you cover all of the expenses! Yes, we can show your group how to enjoy all that we have to offer, including covering your gasoline expense, overnight accommodations, meals, museum admission, and your chosen level of zip line fun—for free! (I’ll explain more about this excellent consignment idea with you in a moment.)
Not only will everyone in your group receive admission to the museum for two consecutive days and a zip line adventure tour, but your group’s lodging includes meals at Potter’s Ranch, a Christian camp with air-conditioned cabins just a short distance from the museum. And to make this program even better, we will cover the cost of your gas (up to 500 miles).
To get started, we will simply gather some basic information from you and put together a consignment package for your group to complete based on your exact trip details. Then we provide you with a discount code which allows people you share the code with to purchase tickets online at a reduced price of $20 per ticket, for a savings of $9.95 each. You can share this code with friends, Facebook friends, family members, and anyone else you choose—all of the sales are tracked toward your goal. Once your program is completed, we will help you schedule your trip and make your overnight reservations with Potter’s Ranch.
Our goal has always been to help fellow believers live out 1 Peter 3:15, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.” What better way to help equip your group to live out this verse than a trip to the Creation Museum and to learn more about the truth of God’s Word? And while you’re here, you can enjoy fun, fellowship, teaching, and excitement.
For more information simply send us an email and be sure to include the words “zip trip” in your message. We hope to hear from you soon!
Aerial Challenge Course
In addition, we now feature an Aerial Challenge Course outdoors, next to the zip lines. The aerial activities have names like Postman’s Walk, Fence Posts, Vines, Balance Beam, Burma Planks, No Hands Bridge, and Pirates Crossing (to name just a few). There are about 35 fun and sometimes challenging activities. In this course, there is even an aerial section for children ages five to nine (with shorter and lower zip lines). Now virtually the entire family (or group) can participate on the high ropes and zip lines.

Interesting People at AiG and the Creation Museum
Before I left for Australia, I had the opportunity to do a few media interviews, including two film projects. One project is on hummingbirds, of all things! The other project is associated with our friends at Vision Forum Ministries, which is involved in the production of many Christian films. Vision Forum also encourages others to produce Christian-themed films, including through its well-known San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival. The current film happens to be on the topic of the dragon legends we hear about all over the world. That’s also the theme of one of the newest exhibits inside the Creation Museum, which, among other things, answers the question, “Were dinosaurs dragons?”
Here is a photo of the film crew interviewing me as we shot outside one morning in front of our beautiful gardens on the grounds of the Creation Museum:
Members of the Duggar Family
We continue our contacts with the famous Duggar family from Arkansas. This is the Christian family that has 19 children and has become internationally known for its TV program on the TLC network called 19 Kids and Counting. While I was away, Josh Duggar, the oldest of the 19 children (who now serves as executive director of the FRC Action organization in Washington DC), and his wife Anna paid us a visit with their three children. Yes, the famous Duggar parents are now grandparents! Here is the cover of a magazine featuring the couple after their 19th child was born:
The episode of the family’s visit to our Creation Museum a few years ago is no longer on the TLC website. But you can read my blog post about their visit.
For more information on this delightful Christian family, see their TV program website.
A Notable Birthday
Lastly, I wanted to pay tribute to a great friend of the ministry, Dick Sauer. Dick and his wife Marlene were the first volunteers who came on board with us when AiG started in northern Kentucky in April–May 1994. Marlene continues to volunteer more than 19 years later, but Dick, because of health issues, has had to stop volunteering. A World War II veteran (serving in the Pacific Theater), Dick celebrated his 90th birthday in Cincinnati last weekend. While I could not attend, AiG’s other founders, Mike Zovath and Mark Looy, were there, along with other AiG staff. Here is Dick at the party inside his house:
