The Smithsonian—An “Evolution Museum”
It’s always encouraging to me when I receive letters of support about our ministry at Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum. Recently, I received a letter from a family who had toured the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Their children were shocked at how the Smithsonian pushed evolutionary ideas and millions of years, and they called it the “Evolution Museum.” They visited the Creation Museum shortly after that.
Read their letter below—I hope you find it as encouraging as I did.
Dear Sirs,
I took my family on a trip to see Washington D.C. recently and we enjoyed many sites. However, when we walked through the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, my children were offended by the overwhelming message of evolution. My twelve-year-old son was visibly upset and after about an hour; he wanted to leave.
I remembered some of my friends had commented on a “Creation Museum” a couple of years ago, so I texted them and asked if it was a good experience. After receiving positive responses, I got online, and found you guys and planned our trip to visit you while we continued walking through what my kids were then calling the “Evolution Museum”.
The next day, we pulled into your parking lot, and frankly, I was nervous. We had just come from the world’s premier museum and were about to enter a privately owned, small, creation museum in Podunk Kentucky. We were not disappointed. Our experience was tremendous. The astronomy exhibit, the ark, and the fossils, were all of supreme quality similar to the Smithsonian, which we had seen the day before.
Understanding the controversy between the religion of evolution and the religious aspects of creation and historical science vs. observational science has helped our kids realize the difference between what they observed at the two museums.
Congratulations on a fine institution.
We praise God for the impact that the Creation Museum is having on the lives of believers and unbelievers, and we pray that our exhibits continue to challenge those who see them to think critically about the claims of evolution and, ultimately, to see the truth of God’s Word and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Make sure you visit the Creation Museum website and find out about our all NEW Christmas Town (Live Nativity, spectacular garden light display, zip line in the dark across the lake, and lots of GREAT food). “New Christmas Town” will be held every Friday and Saturday evening in December—entrance is free (there is a charge for the zip line, camel rides, entrance to the museum and planetarium, and of course the food).
Great Meetings in Bolivia!
Here are two photos from the two major seminars in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, that Dr. Terry Mortenson and I have had the privilege to lead, along with our Spanish translator and AiG speaker, Joe Owen.
On Thursday evening, 1,700 people turned out! Some of them had to stand in the back and on the sides of the auditorium:
Friday evening, we had 3,000 in attendance at my talk and there were another 2,000 last night at a different location (sadly 500 people had to be turned away). Here is a photo of me talking to a group of people after my talk last night:
Friday morning, we had more teaching sessions and I was interviewed on a Bolivian nationwide TV program first thing in the morning:
Praise God for these incredible outreaches! I will report more on our Bolivian meetings a little later on this blog.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken

Comet ISON—Coming Soon!
Answers in Genesis began a new web banner campaign recently to encourage people to view Comet ISON as its orbit brings it closer to earth. The campaign banner reads, “Comet ISON—Evidence of a Young Universe.”
If everything goes as most astronomers predict, the scene in the sky will be breathtaking! The comet may even be visible to the naked eye during the day. But there’s more to it than just a beautiful view. Comets like ISON are problems for evolutionists because when properly understood, they’re actually evidence that the universe is young.
How is Comet ISON evidence of a young universe? Well, we actually have an excellent answer to that question in our banner article. I’ve included a few paragraphs below:
What Kills Comets?
As a sun-grazer, Comet ISON will lose a massive amount of material as it passes close to the sun. This will cause the comet to brighten tremendously, but it comes at a cost: after enough orbits Comet ISON eventually will lose so much matter that it won’t brighten anymore.
In addition to gradually wearing out, two more catastrophic loss mechanisms can ravage comets. First, as comets pass close to the major planets (especially the gas giant Jupiter), the gravity of those planets can alter comet orbits. When this happens, half the time the comet orbit decreases in size and orbital period, which causes the comet to wear out even faster. But the other half of the time comets have their orbits increased. Sometimes the increase can lead to ejection from the solar system, never to return. Astronomers have observed comet ejection a number of times. Second, comets occasionally collide with planets, thus abruptly ending their existence. We observed this for the first time in 1994 when Comet Shoemaker-Levi IX slammed into Jupiter.
I encourage you to read the full article on our website so that you too will be equipped to share with your friends and family how Comet ISON is evidence that the universe is young and that ultimately the universe was created by the God of the Bible.
Our staff astronomer Dr. Danny Faulkner wrote to me yesterday saying: “After unsuccessfully trying to see Comet ISON with binoculars from my house on several mornings, I was delighted to see it this morning. It was bright enough that I thought that I ought to have seen it on previous mornings, so I thought that it must have undergone an eruption. Turns out, it did overnight, and I must have been one of the first to notice it. See this article for more information.”
Thanks, Danny. And make sure you visit the Creation Museum and see the high-tech powerful planetarium program on Comet ISON, Fires in the Sky. Dr. Faulkner wrote the script for this fantastic program that is now shown at the Creation Museum.
A College Expo to Explore, Today and Tomorrow
Also at the museum, and as I am away speaking in Bolivia, our annual College Expo is going on through Saturday. Over 20 Christian colleges—all of which have signed our statement of faith*—have set up displays and have representatives on hand to talk to prospective college students and their parents. Over 420 students have preregistered, and we expect others to sign up at the door. Here is a photo of our exhibitors inside Legacy Hall this morning:
Also at the College Expo, special talks are being given by Christian educators to students and their parents. Think about attending this event—registration is free for students, and students also receive free general admission to the museum. They can hear excellent speakers like Dr. Georgia Purdom, Bryan Osborne, and the president of Appalachian Bible College, Dr. Dan Anderson. Find more information on our website.
Bolivian Blessings
Yesterday in Bolivia we held a news conference in an effort to promote our speaking engagements in the city of Santa Cruz. Dr. Terry Mortenson and I answered questions from media representatives from three secular TV stations and one Christian radio station in Santa Cruz. What I thought would be a short press conference lasted an hour! The reporters appeared to be very interested in the topics we will present at our creation vs. evolution conference that started later that evening. I sense a great openness here to what we have to say, so please be in prayer for the next two days of meetings. Here is a photo of the press conference—notice the conference banner behind us:
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
*That is not to say that every professor on each campus accepts a literal, straightforward reading of Genesis. Some investigation and discernment will be needed as parents and students seek out a school.

Even a Seven Year Old Can Understand It
Recently I spoke at Great Hills Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, where I met a remarkable young boy named Reuben. He and his father met me after my talk, and his father proudly showed me his seven-year-old son’s notes from the session. They were incredibly detailed!
I thought it would be encouraging to show you Reuben’s notes. It’s apparent that he was listening carefully to what I had to say—which is evidence that our young people are paying attention to what we teach. It’s so important that we teach apologetics and doctrine founded firmly on the Word of God.
Over the years I have had many young children come up to me after I preached in the morning service at their church and tell me they loved the message. It’s a reminder that children understand more than what many of us give them credit for. It’s also a reminder as to why the very popular Answers Bible Curriculum is getting rave reviews—not just from adults and teens but also from children who tell their teachers they love it because they learn lots of things. We’ve had Sunday school teachers relate to us that children have told them they don’t want to go back to their old Sunday school material since they really didn’t learn much from it. (I call many such curricula “fluff and stuff.”)
Here is a photo of Reuben with his dad and brother, and also scanned images of his notes. Yes, there are words spelled incorrectly—he’s seven after all—but look at what he generally understood from the message:
Church, the culture is out to capture the hearts and minds of our youth. But we have to stand our ground and rescue our kids from those who seek to shake their faith. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, Jesus Christ “gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father” (Galatians 1:4). So let’s share the gospel and raise our children to love God’s Word.
And here’s a suggestion: the next time AiG speakers are in your church, maybe you should keep your young children with you to hear them. They may not understand everything, but they will pick up more than many people think they will.
Ministering In Bolivia
Dr. Terry Mortenson and I, along with AiG’s Spanish ministry coordinator Joe Owen, are in Bolivia with our ministry partner Creous Ramdath. We will speak at a conference tonight and then Friday and Saturday where thousands of people are expected to attend. Please be in prayer for this time in South America. You can read more about these meetings, including a schedule of the sessions, on our outreach page. (Please note that Bolivia is one hour ahead of Eastern Time in the U.S.)

Visit the New Ark Encounter Website
Last week, we launched a spectacular redesign of the Ark Encounter website. Our web department tells me the “new site has been built on a more stable platform, with better architecture, and it’s much easier to maintain.” This much cleaner version of the site also has great new content and a beautiful illustration of the Ark on the landing page:
We’ve also added new interactive floor plans of the Ark (these are not the final plans and are subject to change). Visitors to the site can hover over different sections of the Ark to see where various exhibits will be located:
What’s more, there’s a section of featured blogs and articles related to the Ark Encounter, as well as an improved donation page, where you can find out how you can be a part of our mission to build an evangelistic Noah’s Ark. The donation system has been updated to accept international donations online as well!
I encourage you to visit the newly redesigned Ark Encounter website—and check out our free desktop wallpapers of Ark Encounter illustrations:
Download your wallpaper today, so that you can more easily share the vision of building the Ark with your friends and family!
Devastating Typhoon in the Philippines
Last week, Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines and caused an incredible amount of devastation and death. The news images are horrific. With food and medical supplies running low and the death toll still uncertain, many in the Philippines are certainly wondering why such tragedies occur.
The answer is found in the pages of Scripture, where we learn that the origin of suffering and death is Adam’s sin in Genesis 3. If you, your family, or someone you know has been affected by Typhoon Haiyan or any other tragedy, we want to offer you our booklet on death and suffering as a free download.
And if you feel called to give financially to the relief effort for the affected areas of the Philippines, we suggest you look into Samaritan’s Purse ministries. We have been promoting their “Operation Christmas Child” outreach at our Creation Museum this time of year—as people help us send toys and other items placed in a shoebox to needy children in Third World nations—and so we have also become aware of its emergency relief efforts in the Philippines. You can read about their response team and donate on their website.
Please continue to pray for the people affected by Typhoon Haiyan, that they would not only find relief from pain and hunger, but that they would also hear and believe the gospel of Christ before it’s too late.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Should We Trust the Authority of Milton’s, Paley’s, and Darwin’s Words?
Well, Christianity Today has published another article calling into question the authority of God’s Word in Genesis—lifting up man’s word as the authority instead. Andrew Wilson wrote an article titled “Where Did We Come From? How Milton, Paley, and Darwin Help Us Answer the Question.” Specifically, Wilson focuses on the works of William Paley, John Milton, and Charles Darwin.
Now, Wilson explains that there is a conflict going on in our world over evolution, creation, and other compromise positions about Genesis. He makes his own position no secret:
Today [Darwin’s] theory of evolution by natural selection is almost universally accepted in the academy, and has been broadly confirmed by studies in several fields.
At this point, it’s apparent that whatever Wilson has to tell Christianity Today readers won’t line up with God’s Word—the Bible clearly doesn’t allow for evolution. In fact, he takes the position that evolution and Scripture can be mixed without a problem, while still claiming that God’s Word is true:
First, I believe the Scriptures, when interpreted properly with respect to their context, purpose, and genre, do not contain any mistakes. . . . Second, I believe in the general integrity and credibility of peer-reviewed journals, and the importance and value of experimental science.
But what’s significant is that Wilson—a professing Christian—does not ultimately look to God’s Word in this article for answers! No, he looks to John Milton, the author of Paradise Lost, and he looks to Charles Darwin. What’s more, he seems to be confusing operational (observational) science with historical science. Of course Christians see the value of operational science—it’s how we advance in technology, medicine, and so on—but it has nothing to do with evolution!
Wilson focuses on Charles Darwin, William Paley, and John Milton, saying that if he could talk to the three of them today, “They could resolve most of their differences.” He focuses on the issue of death before the Fall, claiming that Darwin and Milton didn’t actually disagree:
Well, it depends on what you mean by death. Darwin was talking about the physical death of plants and animals, and insisting that this had happened for a very long time. (From Genesis, by the way, we know that plants were eaten before the Fall, and there’s no indication that animals were originally immortal either.) Milton, following Paul in Romans 5, was talking about the both physical and spiritual death of human beings, which, if you think about it, is also the focus of what God says in the story (Gen. 2:1; 3:19). So although it might look like Darwin and Milton were saying contradictory things about death, they weren’t. They just thought about death differently.
Now, I think it’s apparent based on his evolutionary ideas that Darwin wouldn’t have accepted that human death only entered the world after a literal Fall. But the bigger question is, since when is John Milton the authority Christians should turn to about our origins?
Milton held some very controversial beliefs in his day. For example, he rejected the doctrine of the Trinity (a doctrine that is evident from Scripture and consistent with Genesis 1:26.) and believed in a heresy known as Arianism—the idea that Christ was created by God and was not God Himself. Now, if I were given the choice between getting my theology from a man who denied the full deity of Christ or from the Word of the One who created the universe, I’m going to choose the Creator’s Word.
But Wilson presses this idea of reconciling the differences that Milton, Darwin, and Paley had with each other to the very end of his article, claiming, “I can’t think of anything Milton (or Genesis) says about Adam and Eve that is contradicted by Darwinian evolution.” Even in that statement, the Bible takes second place to the writings of a man.
At Answers in Genesis, we unashamedly believe that the Word of God is our authority in every area—not the word of John Milton or Charles Darwin. What difference would it make if Milton, Darwin, and Paley reconciled their differences? None, if their conclusion contradicts what the Lord teaches in His Word.
I encourage you to visit our website at AnswersInGenesis.org to learn what Scripture teaches about creation. And I urge you to pray for those who wish to lift man’s ideas in authority over the Bible, that they would repent and return to the authority of God’s Word from the very first verse.
And I also urge you to subscribe to a magazine that does stand on God’s Word from the very beginning without compromise—Answers magazine.
By the way, one of our staff members was a close friend of one of the former editors of Christianity Today (in the 1960s). That editor believed God’s Word in full, and he would have been shocked to see such a pro-evolution article in his magazine like the one from Andrew Wilson.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken

New Christmas Town—Spread the Word
This is the news release our publicist distributed to the media this morning, slightly adapted for the web:
“New Christmas Town” Celebration—Creation Museum Celebrates Christmas
with New Attractions, Popular Live Nativity, and Spectacular Lights
The popular Christmas festivities at the Creation Museum—now called “New Christmas Town”—are returning this year, and once again a live Nativity and tens of thousands of lights should draw large crowds over eight evenings in December. Furthermore, with new attractions and enhancements this year, museum officials expect to break the previous record of 24,945 visitors, weather permitting.
New Christmas Town, which will remain largely free, has become an annual tradition for families in the Tri-State and beyond. Last December, an on-site survey indicated that the average family travelled 132 miles one way to Petersburg, Kentucky (west of the Cincinnati Airport), to be a part of this annual event. To handle the expected crowds this year, changes have been made to greatly help with parking, and a new walking route has been created through the brilliantly lit grounds to keep the lines moving, even on the busiest evenings.
New this year will be the opportunity to ride a zip line over the museum’s scenic three-acre lake, and soar over the most spectacular Christmas light show in the Tri-State. (There is a charge for the zip line.)
With a live Nativity on the museum’s highly decorated grounds, New Christmas Town presents the true meaning of Christmas. In addition, New Christmas Town provides families a glimpse into the amazing events surrounding the wonder of Christ’s birth. The Creation Museum is located in Petersburg, Kentucky, at exit 11 off I-275, only two exits west of the Cincinnati Airport.
This year, New Christmas Town will be held every Friday/Saturday evening in December: December 6–7, 13–14, 20–21, 27–28. On Saturday evening, December 7, our third annual Deaf Day at New Christmas Town will be held.
The museum’s large gardens are being transformed into a “Garden of Lights” featuring a breathtaking display of tens of thousands of Christmas lights. Previous visitors have indicated that it’s the most dazzling show of Christmas lights in the entire region. Inside the museum, an array of Christmas items will be on sale in the bookstore.
The museum’s acclaimed planetarium will present its special ticketed program, The Christmas Star, about the mysterious star in the east that heralded the birth of Jesus and guided the wise men to Him. In addition, new this year is the planetarium’s program about comets, Fires in the Sky. It describes the Comet ISON, which will be visible to the naked eye next month as it travels near earth.
Noah’s Café will serve a tasty turkey dinner, with festive food and drinks also on sale.
Ken Ham, president of the Creation Museum and Answers in Genesis, said: “This is the time of year to reflect on the greatest gift ever given to us: the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, who was the Babe in the manger. New Christmas Town at the Creation Museum is our way to say ‘thank you’ to our community for its support and to offer families a free gift at Christmas—complimentary admission to New Christmas Town.”
New Christmas Town is open 5–8 PM ET, December 6–7, 13–14, 20–21, 27–28. All the outdoor events (except for the camel rides and zip line) are free and open to the public. Inside, museum admission on Christmas Town days is only $5 after 5 PM (last entry is at 8 PM). A free DVD and booklet about Christmas will be given to each family, and children will receive a complimentary Christmas coloring book.
More information about the special Christmas events, plus details on purchasing tickets for the zip line, planetarium programs, and the Creation Museum can be found at creationmuseum.org/christmas or by calling (888) 582-4253.
Make your plans now to travel to our Cincinnati area, and bring your family and friends (especially those who need to be reached with the Christmas message), for New Christmas Town. Please send this link to them:

Campus Ministry Using AiG Resources
We certainly can’t mention every church group that visits our Creation Museum (there are hundreds each year). But I did want to acknowledge a recent visit by the Mifflinburg Alliance Church from Pennsylvania. It just so happens that the leader of this tour, Glen Bayly, has been a long-time supporter of the AiG ministry. He hosts a weekly radio program called The Lion’s Den University Report.
With his unique radio broadcast, Glen travels around the country to interview Christians who are academics in universities. Many of the professors he interviews are evolution-doubters, and some of them will also hold to the basic Creation and global-Flood beliefs of Answers in Genesis.
As he travels to these various campuses, Glen will pass out some of our witnessing booklets. A popular one, authored by one of our adjunct speakers, Dr. Gary Parker, is titled From Evolution to Creation, which is Gary’s testimony of rejecting evolution and accepting creation while a professor at a Christian college. Glen also passes out CD samples of his radio program to campus chaplains, faculty, and students.
Here is a photo of Glen inside our Creation Museum, next to one of our dinosaur models:
Here is Glen’s group, receiving a welcome from Stan, one of our excellent museum staff members—Glen is on the far right:

“The Lie” Contest Winners Visit the Creation Museum
Last year, I celebrated the 25th anniversary of my bestselling book The Lie: Evolution with an updated, revised, and expanded edition titled The Lie: Evolution/Millions of Years. As part of the celebration, Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum held a photo contest asking participants to submit a photo of themselves with a copy of The Lie.
Now, it was a challenge to select a winner in this creative photo contest, because we received so many great photos. But the Thornton family from the Memphis, Tennessee, area submitted the Grand Prize photo for the contest commemorating The Lie.
They recently visited the Creation Museum, and I was able to spend some time with them while they were here.
The Thorntons spent a week in the Cincinnati area, visiting the Cincinnati Zoo as well as other parks and attractions around town. They also zipped across the lake outside the museum on our new zipline course—the biggest and best ziplines in the Midwest!
Along with receiving nearly $500 in prizes from our bookstore, they also received two nights’ accommodation at the Hampton Inn in nearby Florence, Kentucky.
We at Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum want to say congratulations to the Thorntons and to the runners up in The Lie photo contest, and thanks to all who participated.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken

More New Exhibits at the Creation Museum!
Last year the Green family—owners of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.—installed a special exhibit in the Creation Museum called Verbum Domini (“The Word of the Lord”). Now, this exhibit is a portion of their travelling Passages exhibits. We were thrilled to add this special collection of Bible-related manuscripts to the museum—and the Greens even said they would change out the manuscripts and other Bible-related items every six months!
Well, it’s that time again, and the Greens have rotated the Verbum Domini collection here at the museum. The new items are centered on the theme “Art and the Bible.” The incredible artifacts they’ve put on display contain art spanning from the 16th to the 21st century, including prints of works by Rembrandt van Rijn and Gustave Doré, and a 1400s illumination by Bartolomeo Varnucci.
Do you want to know more about the new Verbum Domini Bible-related artifacts on display at the Creation Museum? Read our lead article on the Answers in Genesis website today. I’ve included the first few paragraphs below:
Visitors to the Creation Museum will be able to view an amazing new collection of historical Bible manuscripts and artifacts in the popular Verbum Domini (“The Word of the Lord”) exhibit. Representing only a small portion of the famed Green Collection, the items in this exhibit are rotated out about every six months. “Art and the Bible,” the new display which opened yesterday, focuses on the stunning artwork to be found in biblical artifacts.
In ancient times, Christians relied on images to convey the accounts of the Bible and the deeper meaning of those accounts to people who could not read them for themselves. As more people were able to read, pictures were still used to adorn the Bible and to help people connect with the narratives on a deeper, more human level. Today, art is overwhelmingly absent from Bibles, but, for the majority of the history of Christianity, the opposite was true. The most important Bibles were the ones that were the most extensively decorated.
From the beautifully illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages to the intricately engraved Bibles of the 19th century, the process of illustrating the Bible is a challenge that has attracted many of the most famous artists throughout history. Though the style of the art changed depending on the time and place the Bible was made, the scenes depicted and the themes conveyed remain familiar.
I urge you to read the full article and to plan your trip to the Creation Museum to see this spectacular exhibit today!
And remember, these nineteen items will only be on display at the Creation Museum for about six months, and then they will be changed out for a different collection of rare Bible-related items.
Hope to see you here at the Creation Museum soon!
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,

Sad Atheist Legacy
What kind of legacy does an atheist leave for his children? Well, not a very encouraging one, according to a recent news report from the Christian Post. The report highlighted one atheist’s attempt to share some of man’s supposed wisdom to his grandchildren by sponsoring a billboard:
The article states, “A Wisconsin man who is sponsoring a billboard that denies there is life after death said in a statement that the message is ‘a legacy for my grandchildren.’” What a sad legacy to leave! Now, this is no surprise coming from an atheist. Many others have said similar things. The UK’s Richard Dawkins, for example, has stated, “Don’t imagine for one second you’re going to paradise . . . . You’re going to rot in the ground.” (For more on Dawkins’s view of the afterlife, see this blog post.) For atheists, there is no hope, no purpose in life, and no life after death. (Incidentally the Christian Post article also mentioned the billboards we put up last month, which challenged our atheist friends’ hopeless worldview.)
But what’s scarier is that they want to teach our children this godless worldview. Secularists know that if they can reach the hearts and minds of our children, they’ll have won the war for the culture. Now, our theme at Answers in Genesis for 2013–2014 is “Standing Our Ground, Rescuing Our Kids.” And we want to equip Christian parents for leaving a godly legacy for their children.
Through the apostle Paul in Galatians 1:4, God tells us we live in a “present evil age.” But Jesus Christ “gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us:”
Who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father. (Galatians 1:4)
Proclaiming that gospel message in this evil world is the church’s most urgent call. Satan, however, is after the minds of this and future generations, and his key tactic is to deceive our youth (and adults) into believing lies (such as evolution and millions of years) that discredit the Bible’s authority and accuracy. We uphold God’s Word from the beginning for it is from the Bible that we get the totally trustworthy gospel message.
My brother Steve and I coauthored a book a few years ago titled Raising Godly Children in an Ungodly World. In this book, we look at what it means to leave a godly legacy for our children and grandchildren. Ultimately, that legacy is found in sharing the gospel and raising our children in the Word of the Lord—just as our mother and father did for us.
Christian parents, I encourage you to read Raising Godly Children in an Ungodly World, and to decide now what kind of legacy you’ll leave your children:
You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. (Deuteronomy 6:7)
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)
The book can be purchased on our online store, and it is also available online to read for free.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
