Geekery

I've been terribly amused by these Photoshop mashups from The Amalgam Age of Comics:

(Although really, with that particular hairstyle, it's clearly "The Goblin King" and not David Bowie. However, I'm OK with Woody Allen being just Woody Allen. Probably because he usually is.)

(Was totally geeking out listening to "Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before" while doing the dishes today ...)

(You have to admit, it would be pretty damn classic ...)

Culture is News, Redux

Was name-checked again in today's Pie & Coffee, and I have to admit, it's kind of amusing. Despite my prickliness, I don't really bear those guys any animosity. Mostly, I admire what they do. And they make a good point in this one, about how professional journalists do tend to make themselves a bit remote. There are good reasons for that ... the maintenance of objectivity, the cocoon of professionalism. I certainly see all that, even if I've never entirely agreed with it. But then, my journal...

"Project Runway": The Case for Mondo

I did one of those "self interviews" as pre-publicity for an upcoming reading, and one of those questions was:

For many, poetry is Wordsworth, Keats et al ... what is "poetry" in 2010?

I found this to be a sort of baffling question, and to tell the truth, I'm a bit suspicious of anyone who thinks poetry or any other art form is just one thing, or can be represented by one artist. My response, as honest as I could muster, was this:

I’d hesitate to say it’s any one thing. We live in the age ...

Morning Thoughts

I had a sort of OC Weekly day yesterday. First off, I got to eavesdrop a bit as Dianne Williamson talked to my old colleague, Ask A Mexican columnist Gustavo Arellano, about the recall of Spanish-language ballots in Worcester over a misspelling. It was an unusual moment, with my journalistic past and present sort of colliding in a phone call at the desk catercorner mine. All very odd. Perhaps even odder was how much this issue of the T&G touched upon Worcester's sizable Latino population, wha...

"That's just baloney, man. Put your panties back on and do the job."

Oh, reality television. On a day where I resolved that I may be swearing off Dancing with the Stars after learning that the contestants might include David Hasselhoff, "The Situation" from Jersey Shore and Bristol Palin -- a scenario which, frankly, I think I can only bring myself to face if it's balanced out by, like, Nathan Fillion, Salma Hayek, Amanda Palmer and Stephen Colbert -- a delayed viewing of Project Runway has reminded me that, for all my high-mindedness, I can be just as much a ...

Media Matters

A few interesting bits of media buzz around the Internet this morning, but let's start on the personal front with a big congratulations for my old friend Gustavo Arellano, who has just been named Managing Editor of my old stomping grounds, OC Weekly. Congrats, 'Stavo! Also on the homefront, hot on the news that my friend Barbara DeMarco-Barrett will be Orange Coast Magazine's new book critic, it seems the magazine's stepping up with a smackdown of "52 Reasons Why It's Better to Live in OC...

Random Rock 'n' Roll Musings

Rock 'n' roll's been on my mind, lately. That's probably a funny statement, seeing as I make part of my living writing about music, but there it is. Part of it is Steve dying, I'm sure, and the nostalgia that comes with that. And maybe part of it is seeing Scott Pilgrim vs. the World for a second time, followed by finally getting around to seeing The Runaways, both of which center on struggling rock bands (although one is obviously far more cartoony than the other.) Certainly, some of my...

RIP Vern Wilson, AKA Stephan Wilson, AKA Steve Skitz

Steve officially passed away at 7:15 a.m. Pacific Standard Time this morning.

From every dingy basement on every dingy street
every dragging handclap over every dragging beat
That's just the beat of time-the beat that must go on
If you’ve been trying for years we already heard your song

Death or glory becomes just another story
