5 More Scifi Novum Writing Prompts
Science fiction
stories typically arise from a novum, a scientifically plausible concept that is a reality in the tale. The novum might be an mechanical device like robot servants, artificial intelligence, or faster-than-light spacecraft; it also can be a hypothetical idea such as The Earth is a scientific experiment run by aliens to determine the meaning of life or The government outlaws books. The author then asks What if? exploring how the world with this novum is different than ours.
Among the problems of many novice science fiction writers is instead of introducing a new novum they rely on used furniture that is, they borrow novums from popular SF series. After all, how many novels have you read that use starships exploring the galaxy for the Earth-based Federation? Barely changing names to appear as if you are not appropriating a starcraft seeking M-class worlds for the Earth-centered Alliance still doesnt cut it as original or fully using the potential that science fiction offers to examine our culture or humanity.
To help SF writers, here are some novums of potential near-future inventions from which stories could be built:
Bathroom physical
What if physicals at the doctors office became a thing of the past as you received one every time you entered your bathroom? The rug would measure your weight, pulse and blood pressure, the toothbrush check your saliva, the mirror track your height, and an auto-analysis of your waste in the toilet bowl will examine what you ate and drank to recommend diet changes. How does this change our personal health or health insurance rates?
Colonizing Lalande 21185 moon
What if an interstellar expedition locates a habitable moon around one of the gas giants orbiting Lalande 21185, a M-type star about 8.3 light years away? How would the colonists overcome the many challenges facing them, such as the dim starlight, radiation from the gas giant, and blocking of the starlight when the gas giant eclipses the main star?
Dynamic earpiece
What if we wore earpieces that could filter out specific noises or amplify specific sounds? For example, we might set the earpiece to tune out advertising but raise the volume of teachers in the classroom.
Space cloud
What if to reduce global warming, a reflective mesh of a trillion ultra-thin mirrors (a space cloud) were placed around the Earth to reduce the amount of sunlight hitting the planet? At what point will the space cloud have to be constructed?
StarChips
What if a thousand nanoscale spacecraft, powered by lightsails, were accelerated to 100 million mph and sent on their way to our nearest neighbor, the Alpha Centauri star system? Depending on the StarChips destination within that star system, they could be there in 20-30 years.

Brainstorm ideas for your YouTube video
The first step
for authors to determine what will be the specific content for their YouTube video begins with brainstorming ideas. You want to have a bevy of ideas from which to draw upon and to keep the momentum going with a follow-up vid.
You can come up with video ideas just by spending 10 minutes listing every idea that pops into your head. That probably will get you a couple of really good ideas and keep you going for a few weeks. But what do you do then? Or what if most of the ideas youve come up just arent very good?
Either way, youll need to do some more brainstorming.
Dont go back to another 10 minutes of listing ideas, though. That likely will be unproductive. Instead, you can employ any of several other brainstorming techniques:
Mind mapping
Write a keyword describing your topic at the center of a whiteboard or a piece of paper. Then write subcategories that branch off the keyword as well as categories branching off each subcategory. If writing about astronomy, for example, Astronomy is the keyword. Stars, planets and asteroids might be subcategories branching off it. Rocky worlds and gas giants could be subcategories for planets.
Ask questions
Use the 5 Ws and 1 H to come up with as many questions as you can about your topic. If you write about financial planning, you could ask: What is financial planning? Why should I plan my finances? When should I begin planning my finances? How do I plan my finances? All of these could be a video posting.
Connect the dots
Think of the problem as trying to get from where you are (Point A) to where you want to be (Point Z). For example, if putting together videos about kayaking, list all the steps you would need to take from the beginning of a trip (Point A) to the end of the day (Point Z). Ask yourself what are all of the steps you need to take throughout the trip: loading the kayak on the truck roof; how to paddle the kayak; how to portage, etc. All of these steps are ideas for videos.
New attribute
Think of yourself in different ways. For example, what if you weighed 10 pounds more or 10 pounds less? What if you were a different ethnic group or race? How would any of these change your view or perspective about what you might write? For example, if you live in a city and are making videos about jogging, imagine you live in a small town. How would this change the way you jogged? Would you jog on country roads with no sidewalks? How can that be done safely? You now have a new video idea.
Role playing
Ask what kinds of videos others would make. Dont think in terms of other YouTubers but celebrities, role models, or family members. Your goal is to see the problem from a fresh perspective. If you make videos about canoeing, certainly Barack Obama would have a different response than Donald Trump. You now have two video ideas: philosophically recognizing the beauty of the pristine land while on a canoe trip and land developments effect on canoeing waterways.
Time travel
Pretend that you live in a different time period. How would that shape the way you think about a topic? If you write about snowshoeing, for example, in the 1800s people used wood rather than aluminum snowshoes. Wood snowshoes are still worn, however, so a video might discuss their merits or how they are made.
Medici Effect
When people with two different backgrounds get together, often new ideas are unleashed as they find parallels in their interests. You can do the same. If you write about basketball, for example, talk with a mathematician. You might discover that geometry can be used to indicate where the ball will go if it hits the backboard but not go through the hoop. That could be video on how to get more rebounds.
Two heads are better than one
If still stymied, get together with others who know a lot about your topic and try to come up with a list of ideas. Youll be amazed at the great ideas they come up with. This is a good approach for those authors who work solo.
Once you write a list, select the topic you think is best for your first video. Youre then ready to move on to your next step: outlining your video presentation.

Once all is said and done: Afterward/Afterwards
Great news:
You cant get this one wrong. Either version of the word is correct.
Both are used across the English-speaking world, though in the United States and Canada, afterward is slightly more preferred while in the United Kingdom, Australia and elsewhere afterwards is used liked a bit more.
Because of this, some American language teachers tend to view afterwards as more formal as the United States generally considers the Queens English more formal sounding and recommend afterwards be used in academic or official works.
As a side note, afterward has a different meaning than afterword. The latter is an epilogue; you can remember the difference because word is used when referring to a part of a written book.

Artificial flesh
Rather than eat meat from actual animals, what if it was grown in large cell cultures at factories? Will this increase consumption of meat or further decrease its intake over the years?
Canada, Global Superpower
What if climate change leads to massive migration northward, propelling Canada with its borders on three oceans and free trade with the United States, to global superpower status by 2100? How does this alter the world geopolitical situation?
Infrasynthesis
What if devices could capture infrared radiation, which then converts carbon dioxide in our atmosphere into graphite, as part of an effort to fight global warming? How does the invention and possession of such devices shift the geopolitical balance?
Ocean wind farms
What if Western Europe and several other island and coastal countries receive the majority of their electrical power from wind turbines placed in offshore in the various seas or oceans near their borders? What affect does this have on the ecosystem and how does it make these countries vulnerable to attack?
Printed food
What if kitchens were equipped with a 3D printer that could make food like bread, pretzels or even pizzas? How does this alter peoples diets and health ( la the microwave oven of the 1970s)?
