Logbook, July 22, 2019

I woke up around 5:40.

I worked out for 20:00 minutes.

Last year, I tried reading only authors that identified as femme. This year, I did it without even noticing. What is it about masculine writers I find so instinctively unappealing?

I added Study Girl’s Mug to my pinterest wishlist.

I took the TTC.

I did about 20 minutes of yoga. Watched Demon Slayer and How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?, which is pretty damned silly.

I recommend you read Snoopy taught me how to be a writer, and What If the Aliens Are Hot?.

I went to bed around 10:02 pm. I fell asleep around 1.

Logbook, July 21, 2019

Woke up around 10.

Chore day. Had to cancel a few things on account of the heat warning. Felt a little bad about that.

Worked on my Italy vacation Airtable. Started playing I’m Ping Pong King on iOS. Collected some more moons in Odyssey. Tried some new anime’s. None stuck.

I read Lights, camera, caption! Why subtitles are no longer just for the hard of hearing. I recommend you read Collective sweat. I read What sex feels like for men, women and transgender people. I read Against Style Guides — Sort Of. I recommend you read Fast Software, Paid Newsletters, Novels.

I went to bed around 9:45.

Ibushi and Sanada are too handsome. Watched some G1.

I worked out for 20:00 minutes. I watched some anime, and Fosse Verdon. Made a new budget. Relaxed.

Took the TTC. Played A Link to the Past.

Watched both Terminator movies (there are only 2 Terminator movies).

Took the TTC.

Went to bed around 1.

Logbook, July 19, 2019

I woke up at 5:50.

Achievement unlocked: crashed Affinity Publisher for the first time :)

I made a mockup for the Fran’s Not Here live show.

I took the TTC. I played some Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. Life’s too short to not use strategy guides. I finally updated my monthly subscriptions with Bobby. I tried on some dresses. Didn’t buy anything. Oh hey, jury duty call.

I went to apple genius appt about my AirPods volume imbalance.

I took the ttc. It’s hot.

I began listening to The Year I’d Less by Cait Flanders.

Mailed in my ancestry DNA package. I read Men Know It’s Better to Carry Nothing, and Austin Kleon’s weekly newsletter. I watched night 6 of the G1 Climax.

Went to bed around 1.

Logbook, July 18, 2019

I woke up at 5:40. I slept in instead of working out.

How Hacking Works. I read Game Therapy: Animal Crossing & Anxiety. I watched Will Ospreay tear it up Kota Ibushi during Night 5 of the G1.

I did a bunz trade on the way to work. Took the subway. Was going to bike but it was going to feel like 45 today.

I finished “Pleasure Activist” and thought it was okay, but clearly a collection of blog posts instead of, say, a book. The ideas are wonderful but scattershot. As a guy who published a couple of blog-post-books, I will say being on the reading end of it just never feels right.

I took the TTC.

I went to Therapy.

I watched a few episodes of Barry.

I went to bed at 9:49.

Logbook, July 17, 2019

Last night, I read We tell ourselves conspiracy theories in order to live, How I practice at what I do, and Karrueche Tran Is Ready to Land on Top.

I recommend you read The Watch That Went to the Moon.

I woke up at 5:40. I worked out for 14 minutes.

I worked on my Italy Airtable. I did a BUNZ trade. I played some Pokémon Go. I watched Stephen Colbert sign ‘This Year’ with the Mountain Goats. I took the TTC. I played some Mario Odyssey.

I’m begging to not believe stories by default. That’s probably not good but here we are. I only want to see reports with actual evidence, no click bait, and reliable sources.

Twitters probably not a good place for any of that.

I read Everything happens so much. I read Alexander Chee on What Writing Parties Reveals About Characters. I read Where Are All the Bob Ross Paintings? We Found Them.

I recommend you read Everything happens so much.

I went to bed at 11:06.

Keeping a Logbook

Here’s an old link. On Keeping a Logbook by Austin Kleon:

But more importantly, keeping a simple list of who/what/where means I write down events that seem mundane at the time, but later on help paint a better portrait of the day, or even become more significant over time. By “sticking to the facts” I don’t pre-judge what was important or what wasn’t, I just write it down.

I do this in a few places. I write in a bullet journal every day. I knock tasks off with Things 3. I collect links for this blog. But there’s nowhere where all of these things get collected.

I’m building a machine.

in iOS13, there’s a greatly expanded set of automations in the shortcuts app. It may enable me to make a logbook of all the things I do on my phone. And since my phone is my primary computer, it’ll go a long way to automatically log my day. Here’s some of the things I’m trying to build:

an export of the Things 3 logbook
whenever I play a game
when I buy a game
when I wake up/go to work/eat/etc.
calendar events
how long and how well I slept
what I read and watched
what I said on social media and this blog.

Apps I’ll be using

iOS Shortcuts
IFTTT
Day One
Airtable
Dropbox

These posts will be called “Logbook [date]”. I don’t know if these are things I’ll actually publish openly or not. Maybe the first few. We’ll see how it goes.

Logbook, July 16, 2019

I was up at 6:12. I worked out for 7:08 minutes. I collected some moons in Mario Odyssey. I read Love Island Is Trash. But the World Is Burning Down, So I’m Hooked.. I recommend you read I Bought ‘Smart’ Lights to Help Me Wake Up to Work Out, And I Can’t Wait to Get Rid of Them. I tweeted: “Step 1: Run a link blog for years. Step 2. Run a”dead link checker“. Step 3: cry.” I wrote about Keeping a Logbook. I added dates and pictures to my “completed games” Airtable view. I wrote for two hours with my Tuesday writing group. I updated my Italy Trip airtable with location information and eliminated a few ideas. I watched the fifth episode of Good Omens. I did some yoga. Was in bed by 10:30.

More Things, July 15, 2019

Date: July 15, 2019

It wouldn’t be a personal blog without a link list of stuff I liked around the web.

No, My Tulle Skirt Isn’t Lanvin — It’s Actually $19 From Amazon. I might have to start wearing dresses. Super Mario Maker 2 review: much more than a game design toolkit. Keep this game far away from me. How to Keep Your Home Cool Without Wrecking the Planet. Please. How Columbia House sold 12 CDs for as little as a penny. I succumbed to this scam as a kid. A kid! Any 4th of July Cocktail That’s Not Just Watermelon + Booze Is Too Damn Much. It’s true. Novels: passé. Yeah we’ll, I still like writing them. Jony Ive’s Fragmented Legacy: Unreliable, Unrepairable, Beautiful Gadgets. Scathing. Good Faith. The best thing about kink and cults you’ll read all day. In defence of antidepressants. Same.
