I recommend you read How a Parry Saved Street Fighter: 20 Years of 3rd Strike and It’s A Good Time For A Street Fighter III Revival.

I wrote a quick review of the Apple USB 3 to Lightning Camera Adapter https://t.co/Uw94w1k9Eh

I recommend you read On the Troubling Subtext of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Why can’t we just call things unkind?.

Tuesday, August 13

I went to Therapy.

Wednesday, August 14

I added Metal Gear Solid by Ashly and Anthony Burch — Boss Fight Books to my wishlist

Thursday, August 15

I read What Are You Secretly Good At?. I read What’s the Most Memorable Thing a Therapist Ever Told You?.

Friday, August 16

I read Mastery.

I had family in town so I became a bit of a Toronto tourist. I took them on a tour of the waterfront on the Kajama, a ship I used to work on in college as a DJ. Then we hit up the distillery district, followed by dinner at Superpoint.

I read What Fire Emblem: Three Houses Gets Right (And Wrong) About Teaching, and The best $20,000 I ever spent: Starbucks every day of my adult life, and Siri, Privacy, and Trust.

Saturday, August 17

More Toronto tourist stuff with fam. Frans for breakfast, then St Lawrence market, Chinatown, Sonic boom, Graffiti alley, and Kensington, with stops in Longboard Living, Ozzy’s burgers, and Ronnie’s.

We put on our third Glamdrunk movie night, this time showing off 1976’s The Ritz.

Sunday, August 18

We went to see Scott Pilgrim on the big screen at The Royal. Bryan Lee O Malley was there to introduce the movie!

Apple USB 3 to Lightning Camera Adapter Review

This is a weird one. It doesn’t do what I thought it might. With iOS 13, Apple’s newest iPhone OS, you can finally plug in flash drives and external storage. However, you need an adapter. This software upgrade is intended for the iPad, but it is supposed to work with the iPhone as well. So I tried it.

If you plug a usb thumb drive into this dingus, it won’t work. But if you plug the dingus into a power source and try again (the dingus has a USB port and a lightning port for power), it will work. That’s neat! It’s not worth $50 Canadian dollars, but it’s neat.

The actual neat trick this dingus performs is with Microphones. I was able to get my Blue Snowball mic working with GarageBand on the iPhone. The recording sounded pretty reverb-heavy, and I was not able to figure out how to fix that. But hey, as a technical check mark, it gets it. However, it just isn’t going to be the great portable podcast machine that a few other bloggers have suggested (they may be a little too used to living in dongle-town).

It might be worth the money if it worked with proper external hard drives. But even with power, it wasn’t enough to keep my external drive booted. The drive always gave up with the saddest little noise.

Now, neither of these things are really what this dingus was built for. It was for transferring images from a camera using the USB port. And this works! At least, so long as you make sure it’s plugged into power.

Return.

I’m changing up the logbook to weekly because daily is a lot. It’s not that it was hard to make, but it’s not great to have to read.

oookay getting off twitter until everyone’s had their 30-50 shots with this joke. exactly. https://t.co/wycI2rsuYd

if twitter were around in the 30s we’d be making jokes about silly things right wingers do instead of stopping them.

Like we are now. https://t.co/DB2pLBRIz8

I took the TTC.

August 9, 2019

Can I be in one of those Ancestry.ca ads? “I thought there’d at least be something non-english in there. But nope. All white. Literally the whitest. Goddamn basic vanilla frap white.”

I made a mixtape: Cura, August 8, 2019 https://t.co/DMqYZSP6An

I watched In the Soup, 1992 - ★★.

August 10, 2019

I went to The Summit, an all-women’s wrestling show. Summerslam was this weekend and it attracted a number of indie shows. The last time I went to summerlam in Toronto I stopped watching WWE for nearly five years. So yeah. I went to a great women’s show this morning instead. Here’s the photos

I read Bye-Bye iPad.

August 11, 2019

I wrote up this thing, which does take a minute. I embedded all those wrestling photos into the Summit posts. Caught up on the G1. Sent some invoices, did some mic tests for the upcoming Fran’s Not Here live show on Wednesday. Computers are hard!

Animal Crossing New Leaf

Even though it’s been a few years since I’ve picked it up, I still hold a lot of fondness for New Leaf. It got me through a lot. I also took a lot of screenshots. Here’s some of the best ones.

Logbook, August 1, 2019

I woke up around 6:51 am. I took the TTC.

While the rest of my G1 prediction bracket is totally shot, I did pick Okada and Moxley as finalists. Feel pretty good about that one. Guys I was 100% wrong about: I thought Takagi, ZSJ, Sanada, and Fale would do way better than they are. The one I was most off was Jay White. I had him getting 10 points. Didn’t realize it was CHAOS revenge-time. Taichi vs White. The immovable slime vs the unstoppable grease. I love bad guy fights.Night 12 might be the GOAT.

I watched Why Does Celeste Feel So Good to Play? | Game Maker’s Toolkit.

Played a round of Ping Pong King.

Hello Darkness My Old Friend https://t.co/h9XFoFdUS8

I took the TTC.

Trying to get off a subway while nobody moves out of the doorway. It’s like the city collectively forgot the lessons gifted to us by Ludacris.

Played a round of Ping Pong King.

Went on a date.

I went to bed around 10:31 pm.

I recommend you read Amazon Kindle Oasis Review: Now Is the Perfect Time to Buy an E-Reader. I agree with just about everything in this review. 1: You don’t need an expensive Kindle, or even a Kindle. Any recent eink device is great for the purpose of unplugging and reading stuff on the web, but away from eye-straining light.
