May 13, 2020: So, how’s everyone been sleeping?
What was your first horror movie?
The one you sneakily stayed up late to watch while your parents slept upstairs, unaware.

I remember being terrified watching Phantasm as a kid. And then, about ten years ago, I watched it again – and found it somewhat lacking. I’ve found a lot of the things I used to love as a kid don’t really hold up: books, t.v. shows, fresca. What about you? Is there something you absolutely loved when you were a kid that hasn’t survived the test of time?
So, how’s everyone been sleeping?

May 12, 2020: Not so fast!
Interesting. From what I've seen to this point, these guidelines don't go far enough, particularly with regard to addressing the risks presented by asymptomatic crew or cast members. But maybe the updated version will surprise me. https://t.co/zUKqFowGTl
— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) May 12, 2020
With burgeoning talk of restarting production, I feel it important to point out that on set social distancing will be pretty pointless without extensive testing. Early guidelines from other productions made mention of testing individuals exhibiting symptoms, but made no mention of addressing the risks posed by asymptomatic spreaders. Studies have shown that virus-carriers are most contagious when they are showing NO symptoms, so this has to be addressed before anything can move forward. Productions will be walking the high wire without the insurance safety net whenever they resume principal photography, and they can’t afford any missteps. I think it’s going to be a lot harder on the smaller players while the bigger studios, with their deep pockets, are better positioned persevere.
I’m curious where my blog readers stand. Are you still going in to work? If you aren’t going in to work, how comfortable will you feel heading back when quarantine is lifted? Say, tomorrow? A month from now?
GUESS WHAT?!

May 11, 2020: A Dark Matter reunion!
Wow. Akemi is positively flourishing over the course of this lockdown. First, she’s expanding her baking prowess into focaccia…
Heavy basil.
And crispy bacon bits with sautéed onions.
Meanwhile, her garden continues to grow…with an assist from Suji of course…
As for me, I’m eating a lot of chocolate, reading graphic novels, and trying to figure out the stock market. I’m operating under the assumption that they make it intentionally convoluted so as to discourage people from actually trading themselves (when entrusting your entire future to an investment advisor who is only right maybe half the time is so much easier).
Oh, hey, who’s up for a little Dark Matter reunion? The gang at HomeCon are hosting a Dark Matter panel this weekend.
Don’t miss Joe Mallozzi at HomeCon next weekend! He’s on our #DarkMatter panel!

May 9, 2020: Hail, Haircuts, Dream Casting, and Pickled Mushrooms!
Well, today’s weather was windy, snowy and, uh, haily. It’s surprisingly chilly for May. Or is it?
I’ve already started casting my TimEscape series in my head. Granted, it’s only in development at this point, but it strikes me as the perfect and perfectly obvious fun, feel-good sci-fi series for a post-pandemic world. Revised second draft delivered Friday. Bible and both scripts delivered to my agent and management team. Let’s do this!
To those of you asking – no, Akemi hasn’t cut my hair. Yet! We’re awaiting delivery on a hair trimmer set to deliver in 2-3 weeks. When the time comes, I promise to take Before and After pictures.

Well…?
Okay, bad news. Apparently, this pandemic and murder hornets aren’t the only things we have to worry about..
What is your prediction for the Big Bad Things?
I’m going to say…
Hypnoworms! They’re malicious internet viruses disguised as memes and TikTok videos that actually contain dangerous subliminal messaging.
I was going to go with Acid Rain, but apparently that’s already taken.
Catching up on my #AGraphicNovelADay…

Salt and sugar-cured egg yolks? Yes/No https://t.co/bhbo482VLG
— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) May 7, 2020
I say Hell YES! Gonna get me some duck eggs and experiment tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Also wish me luck: Akemi feels she has seen enough youtube videos to cut my hair with some confidence.
Guys, I’m going to do it! Tomorrow, I am ordering both a smash cheeseburger AND a friend chicken sandwich for lunch!
So, people in the industry seem to be circling September as the “back in action” month, but I am dubious. I see a lot of plans floated around that include social distancing on sets, temperature checks, and testing of individuals exhibiting symptoms – but no mention of cast and crew wide testing to include potential asymptomatic cases. Even then, there’s the danger of a key cast member getting sick and the entire production going down. UNLESS we’re checking for antibodies (assuming immediate reinfection isn’t a thing), but I’m already seeing some pushback to the notion of giving “preferential treatment” to those with potential immunity. So…I don’t know. With the prospect of a second wave looming in November, I don’t know how any series can start production in the fall. UNLESS you have a fantastic series idea that incorporates “elements of caution” as part of its creative. Like, maybe the sci-fi series pitch sitting in my send folder.

May 5, 2020: Can we be trusted to do the right thing? Probably not, but let’s see!
About to do this in less than 30. Come join us on Instagram!
So, how’s everybody doing? What’s the latest in your neighborhood? Your city?
In Toronto, things feels same old same old. We had an unusually warm day this past weekend and I did notice significantly more foot traffic, but everyone seemed to be practicing social distancing. It made me think of the whole Sweden scenario and led me to wonder if it could work here. I don’t know. I think that their population is a lot less dense – in both definitions of the word. They have a lot more personal room to roam but, unlike some Westerners, understand the seriousness of the situation and will avoid crowding beaches. Can we be trusted to take the next step when lockdowns restrictions are eased? From what I’m seeing in the U.S. so far, the answer is no. But, let’s wait and see…
