Naming suggestions for the Washington NFL team!
With the news that the Washington football team is changing its name, I thought that this would be an opportune time to weigh in with some suggestions. Suggestions that stand apart. Of course, you’ll have your standards (Tigers, Bulldogs, Wildcats) and your regional go-to’s (Senators, Presidents, Lobbyists and Swamp Things), but I’d like to recommend something a lot more original. Like a nickname that’s never been used before. Syrup Makers? Battling Bathers? Nimrods? Banana Slugs? Alas, all taken at some point.
No, in order to find the perfect name, a name that strikes fear in the hearts of the enemy while simultaneously ensuring you don’t infringe on the copyright of a Midwest community college, I have dug deep into the archives of mythological history to unearth the following five gems.
If Washington’s NFL team uses one, all I ask for in return is some half-smokes, a bottle of Mumbo sauce, and seasons tickets.
To the New Orleans Saints.
#5. The Washington Slepnir
Odin’s trusty eight-legged mount was known for its blazing speed and immense strength, transporting the All-Father between Midgard and Asgard, with the odd stop-overs in Hel – and the opposition’s end zone (?).
#4. The Washington Bonnacons
This formidable creature of yore has the body of a bull, a horse-like mane, and horns that curl in on each other. But what makes it so dangerous is its ability to expel highly flammable shit on its pursuers. Also, its fearsome blitz packages.
#3. The Washington Nav
These demonic creatures of Eastern Europe are black birds with the heads of children who fly around at night, crying, greatly disturbing people and disrupting shotgun formations.
#2. The Washington Kongamato
Hailing from the swamps of South-Central Arica is this pterodactyl-like creature that targets corpses, unwary swimmers, and corner blitzes.
#1. The Washington Bunyip
These creatures of Australian Aboriginal legend lurk beneath the surfaces of swamps and other small bodies of water, feeding on crayfish, opposing quarterbacks, and the odd child.
So, which one is it going to be? And don’t say Generals.

July 11, 2020: Guard your belly buttons!
Success! We have a surprising number of potatoes! We had all but given up on our limp, sad-looking potato plant but, today, Akemi decided to do some digging around and unearthed these earthy gems. Yesterday, I fried up some peppers and zucchini blossoms from our garden and made a delicious sandwich with potato bread. I’m really enjoying the gardening thing. Or, more precisely, I’m really enjoying Akemi enjoying this gardening thing.
Earlier today during a thunderstorm…
Akemi: It’s a thunderstorm! Hide your belly button or the demon will take it!
Me: Why would a demon steal your belly button?
Akemi: Who knows why people do things.

Peppers! My Top 10 Favorites!
This was actually trickier than I thought it would be. There are a lot of great peppers out there. Something for every occasion. But, after much deliberation, I narrowed the field down to the following Top 10!
#10. Shishito Peppers
Starting at the lower end of the Scoville Scale. You’ll find these on the menu at many Japanese restaurants. Although generally mild, they say that ever 1 in 10 is spicy.
#9. Hungarian Hot
A favorite of mine growing up, it’s an ideal gateway pepper for those who want to explore their spicy side.
#8. Cayenne Pepper
The powdered version is a staple in most kitchens. Delicious with scrambled eggs.
#7. Datil Pepper
These little guys pack a wallop, coming in at 100k to 300k on the Scoville Chart. Their underlying tangy sweetness makes them great base for hot sauces.
#6. Serrano Pepper
A great pepper for those who like a touch of heat. I was once gifted a smoked serrano powder that I’m still trying to track down to this day.
#5. Fatali Peppers
I’m not going to lie. They’re pretty hot. But they also possess a unique fruitiness that really makes them stand out.
#4. Trinidad Scorpion Chile
Yep, this is it. This is as high as I go on the Scoville Scale before tapping out. I tend to oven dry, grind them, and use them in powdered version. A little goes a long way.
#3. Bird’s Eye Chiles
These little firecrackers are great, diced up and sprinkled over your main course. The perfect accompaniment to your Thai take-out.
#2. Scotch Bonnet Peppers
Ah, a taste of Caribbean – and a punch to the throat. These sweat-inducers are at the medium-high level of the Scoville Chart.
#1. Habanero Peppers
Yes, admittedly, pretty damn spicy – but its flavor profile is incomparable.

July 9, 2020: Zoom calls, spicy chicken sandwiches, and a bearish harumi!
Thanks to Coco, SLord, and TamDixon for joining me for my very first zoom fan chat. We talked lockdown, projects, Dark Matter, Utopia Falls, a lot of Stargate, and, of course, food. Suji even made a guest appearance. It was so much fun that I’m thinking of doing another one in August. Who’s in?
Dave's Hot Chicken? Yes/No
And if Yes, are we going jalapeño, habanero, scorpion, ghost pepper, or reaper? https://t.co/g77qVBaY4K
— Joseph Mallozzi (@BaronDestructo) July 9, 2020
I’m all in on habanero. Maybe scorpion. I don’t think I could do any higher and still enjoy my meal.
Hmmm. Methinks tomorrow may be a good time for a Top 10 Favorite Spicy Peppers List.
Whew! Spent the last couple of hours reviewing the stock charts and sussing out candlestick patterns. Bearish engulfing candles, hanging man, a couple of dark clouds, and even a bearish harumi signal a potential short-term reversal for gold stocks. I do, however, remain long-term bullish.
Amazing people with whom I have worked…

Top 10 Chocolate Bars!
In honor of National Chocolate Day, I’m counting down my Top 10 Favorite Chocolate Bars.
No high-end bars here. No Amedei Chuao or Pralus Papouasie. Just your standard chocolate bars you’ll find in most convenience stores (depending, of course, on where you live in the world).
#10. Snickers
Love the chocolate and peanut combo, but this one loses a few marks for the caramel. It’s actually better deep-fried.
#9. Kit Kat
This one gets bonus marks for the sheer variety of flavors you can pick up in Japan. My favorite = the matcha.
#8. Aero
This one lands at the 8 spot on the strength of its unique texture.
#7. Caramilk
Liquid caramel always trumps the chewy variety.
#6. Flake
When I was a kid, one of my first jobs was working weekend clean up at a chocolate factory where we ate these for lunch. Another bar with a great texture.
#5. Coffee Crisp
I hear this one is only available in Canada. If true, you’re really missing out.
#4. Oh Henry
Similar to a Snickers but I feel the combination of ingredients just work better here.
#3. Almond Joy
While I love coconut bars like Bounty and Mounds, the addition of almonds puts this one in a league of its own.
#2. Zero
Remember to store them in the freezer for a unique taste experience!
#1. Reeses Peanut Butter Cup
The snappy, soft, sweet and salty combo can’t be beat.
Disagree? Let’s see your Top 10!

July 6, 2020: A lot on my reading plate!
Akemi is apparently fully recovered from her back injury – only three days later! It took me 6 months+ to recuperate from my pulled back! And that included weeks of physiotherapy. She just…slept it off! This is an outrage!
Okay, looks like I have my work cut out for me this week – and next. I’ve got to work on ten pitches. No, that wasn’t a misprint Ten. But modest ones for the most part. Six one-pagers based on existing I.P. Three sci-fi originals. And a polish on a more official, fully formed pitch of that other time anomaly series. I also owe notes on a couple of projects and am about to sign a deal to develop an overview for an adaptation of a fantasy series (6+ books!). Looks like I have a lot on my reading plate for the foreseeable future.

She’s moving around much better now and as a result, doesn’t look so silly when she’s out walking Suji…
Note Suji’s look of utter bewilderment.
