E-books: pre-order

Many thank to those of you who have already ordered - I will be on the case first thing in October. Some of you have asked about formatting - these are in either Word or PDF.

Prime have now decided against publication of the second book in the Worldsoul trilogy and the rights have reverted to me, so since the book is written, I'm putting it up for pre-order now, along with the first volume in the Worldsoul series, and two other rights-reverted books: my first novel, GHOST SISTER (nominated for the Philip K Dick Award) and my first short story collection, THE BANQUET OF THE LORDS OF NIGHT. You can buy them individually, or as a package, and the two Worldsoul novels are available as a separate package together.

These will all be available to be sent out to you in the first week of October, in e-format. Paypal details are below:

E-books
Worldsoul - Book 1 $8.00 USD
Worldsoul - Book 2 $8.00 USD
Ghost Sister $8.00 USD
Banquet of the Lords of Night $8.00 USD
All four e-books $27.00 USD
Worldsoul 1&2 $14.00 USD

Signal boosting

In the UK, we are lucky. We don't have to worry about this sort of thing so much. If you're in a position to help, please consider it, because these are some of the good guys:

Writing

Coming up for air at the start of September. This has been a very heavy writing month for me, with regard to Worldsoul 2, Diary of a Witchcraft Shop 2, and a series of articles on Karl Popper for the Guardian. Of these, only the latter two will now be published in their original arena: Prime have cancelled my contract, due to poor sales.

Apart from the final Chen novel, this essentially leaves me without any deadlined writing commitment for the forseeable future, apart from the subscription short stories. In most respects, this is a huge relief. Since January, I have been working seven days a week and usually two or three evenings, with shop and teaching commitments. I am doing an increasing amount of teaching on Skype for an English language provider.

Given how much writing pays, for the amount of time devoted to it, it is clear that the business and teaching now have to take precedence. Like many of us, I have grown very tired indeed of dealing with publishers: it really isn't worth it in financial terms. to give you an idea, the Guardian will pay me almost as well for five 750 word articles as a small press publisher will for a novel.

Comments from friends that publishers are turning down work on which they would have taken a chance prior to the recession are reinforcing this view. I will be working on a new novel, but it's unlikely to appear in either the mainstream or the small press (so watch this space). Trevor and I are considering setting something up ourselves, but it is likely to be more pagan than SF-oriented for the time being.

There will be more subscription stories, and I'm re-formatting IRON KHAN and probably GHOST SISTER for e-format. And in the meantime, I'm looking forward to having more time to concentrate on other areas. I've been writing professionally for nearly fifteen years, and it's time to take a break.

Writing and Clarke Awards

Diary of a Witchcraft Shop 2 went off to New Con Press this morning. I'm also back on the Clarke Jury after the gap year: books are starting to appear at the house like homing pigeons.

Just a quick update...

...on the recent internet row, now two weeks old. Worth it? Absolutely. It's brought a number of handwringing fuckwits out of the woodwork, whom I'm now spared the trouble of dealing with ever again, either personally or professionally. Chairman Cow has presumably been jumping up and down on Twitter, mooing and bleating and throwing its toys out of its pram, but happily kept off the streets by furious typing (watch that RSI, now!). It's led to some positive contacts, both personal and professional, and apparently some addition to policies in place for online bullying relating to conventions. I'd also like to echo a friend's recent comments on trigger warnings: you won't find those here. Any Mary Whitehouses patrolling the net for things by which to be outraged can find me on email.

RIP Harry Harrison

He'll be sadly missed. I first met him in Brighton, about 9 years ago - I had a joint book launch with Tanith Lee and Cherith Baldry, and to our amazement, Chris Priest turned up with Harry in tow. I gather that the latter had been in hospital with something quite serious and when Chris has shown up at visiting time, HH said to him, "Goddamn it, Chris, I can't stand it in here - I've gotta get out. What are you doing this evening?" On being told, book launch, he discharged himself against all medical advice and showed up at the Sussex Arts Club until about 2 am. From then on, those of us who went to the regular Friday night sessions of the InterZone crew got to know him well: he very kindly invited me along to a Thanksgiving, which didn't happen due to the cook contracting food poisoning ("She went into Tesco's and threw up. I always feel like throwing up when I go into Tesco's."), and H's legendary birthday party at a Chinese restaurant at the Marina.

I last saw Harry at a do in London, to which he brought Fred Pohl. He appeared about midnight, cursing Fred up and down because he'd lost him ("Goddamn it, he always runs off somewhere"). He was a lovely man and I'm so glad I knew him. Glasses were raised tonight.

I've just about finished Worldsoul 2 - some interim bits, but I have actually written 'The end.' I'm going to dedicate it to him.
