Milford

We've now finished the workshopping part of the workshop - 5-6 hours of critiquing over the last 5 days, which has left us all somewhat shattered. The weather here in N Wales has been mixed with a leaning towards wet, but it's still glorious: Trevor and I will be heading into the interior today to pick up a sign for the shop, and everyone else is heading for Beaumaris, I believe.

Writer in residence, Arthur C Clarke Award

I'm very pleased that we can now announce that I am the writer in residence for the Arthur C Clarke Award. This will involve some mentoring, also workshops, which we'll announce in the fullness of time. They're a great team and I'm delighted to be on board!

Weekend

I've now sent WORLDSOUL to Paula at Prime, having gone through the usual writerly 'wake at 3 am, suddenly have idea.' Luckily not major ideas, however.

We're gearing up for Milford next week. Anne Sudworth's exhibition ends tomorrow, when we also have a Brazilian film company turning up to do some filming in Glastonbury, which is likely to feature either Mr Jones, myself or a combination. I don't know what they have in mind, but no doubt I will find out.

Anne's exhibition went very well, although on Day 1 I dropped the large piece of wood which is intended to secure the A Frame to the building on my toe, which has now become a Comedy Toe. It has been so painful that I actually went to the doctor, who says it isn't broken ("Which toe is it?" "The large red shiny balloon sized one?") Having a Comedy Toe makes me realise how much the dog treads on my feet with her enormous, starfish shaped paws.

I am in Bristol tonight doing things druidic. Definitely feeling Post Novel.

Story Orchard

Back in the spring, when I ran the sale, several people signed up for a commissioned short story. I have been working through these throughout the summer and am currently on the last couple (if you haven't heard from me about your story, you'll be doing so soon - some of you have already had them).

I am now setting this up as a separate service. What you'd get would be:

- a customised short story for yourself or a friend (these make great presents, which is why I am floating this now, to give myself time to write these before Christmas). You can either choose one of my existing worlds, or something completely different: they will all be unique. I can also do stories for children or young adults. You can be as specific as you wish about the elements of the story.

- stories will be a minimum of 2,500 words

- the story will be sent to you in hardback, with a customised cloth cover and button fastening. It will be professionally bound (this is likely to be by Papaveria, at the time of writing).

- they will all be personally signed and with a little illustration, by me.

- if it is a present, it will be gift wrapped.

I have done one of these on coloured paper, for a dyslexic reader: this is an option.

The cost would be £60, plus p&p.

Worldsoul

My radio silence over the last few days has been because I have been at home, offline, and on the downward slope of Worldsoul.

Which I've now finished. It should go off to the editor on Monday and we are starting to think about (whee!) cover ideas.

It occurs to me that this is the first published novel of mine that is actually a fantasy that is not set on a version of Earth, although I have done a lot of what used to be called Science Fantasy back in the day.

Anyway, if you like the idea of stolen libraries, adventurous librarians, dodgy Goetic magicians, Ice Age spirits and camel demons, this is likely to be the novel for you.

NEW SHORT STORY SUBSCRIPTION - repost

This year's sub is going to be a little different. Morrigan Books will be bringing out the final (for now) instalment in the Chen chronicles, MORNINGSTAR, in the next year or so, but for some time now I have been planning to do a prequel. This will be the story of how Chen and Inari met, and quite a bit about Zhu Irzh's time in the Hell Vice Squad which, as those of you who have just had the latest story will know, is somewhat different from its earthly counterpart...

The first instalment has already gone out, and a big thank you to everyone who has signed up. I've just had a lot of fun writing instalment 2, which will be out to you all in early September.

So instead of a Chen short story, you'll be getting a section of a Chen novel - A THOUSAND LI - and instead of getting it every three months, you'll be getting it every month instead. Confused? You will be, because in addition to this, there are 2 more short story sets:

MONDHILE: I will be writing 4 short stories (every 3 months) set in the world of GHOST SISTER, DARKLAND and BLOODMIND.

What will I be getting?: feral people, dangerous landscapes, romance, a far-future post-tech society and possibly a couple of battles at sea.

ISIS DANE: (Also 4 stories, every quarter) I've done a couple of short stories in this series already - it's the same magical Albion as the Cygne novels, and set around the same time, so Cygne may well show up. Isis is a water magician, dealing with rivers and river spirits.

What will I be getting?: water magic, underground rivers, demented magicians, sinister faeries, dangerous royalty and a determined heroine.

If you have been enjoying the Garnet Park series, don't despair, because I'll be doing a Christmas special which ties in some of the story so far. I'll announce this a little later in the year, with the opportunity to sign up for it.

Worldsoul: I will also be writing a package of 3 short stories set in the Liminality - this is the world in which Worldsoul, my new trilogy with Prime takes place. These will be ready for Christmas as well.

It's exactly the same deal as before, with no rise in price. I'm doing a limited run of 100, for each story.

Cost: £5/$8 per story. If you sign up for 4 (one series) over the course of a year, I'll call it £18/$30.

The whole deal (12 short stories): £50/ - depending on the USD rate, this is from $78 to $90.

You can do it through Paypal, below.

Stories will be sent as a Word attachment or a PDF - let me know which is best for you.
Interested?: email me on: mevennen(at)hotmail.com.

Short Stories
A Thousand Li £18.00
Mondhile £18.00
Isis Dane £18.00
All 3 series £50.00
Worldsoul pack of 3 £12.00

Glastonbury Conference for the Fantastic in Literature

Well, we had it, under the aegis of the Write Fantastic! And it was great fun. Speakers included Freda Warrington, Kari Maund on the historical origins of Arthur, Paul Weston on John Cowper Powys, Yuri Leitch on Katharine Maltwood, and myself. Good to see some of you in from the USA, too. We'll be repeating this one day conference next year and let's hope that, like the Occult Conference which is now entering its 3rd year under the guidance of Jamie Alexzander, it will grow and grow...

My email account has been hacked - I have just changed the privacy settings but ignore anything that looks as though it's from me and is uncharateristic (I have not just started advertising viagra...)
