Political Grace receives glowing mention

Jim West has offered us a brief assessment of Calvin books, including a glowing mention of Political Grace here.

Happy Birthday John Calvin and the Bible and Critical Theory Seminar

I know it's not quite Friday, 10 July, in France just yet, but it is here and that means it's John Calvin, or rather Jean Cauvin's, 5ooth birthday. Not a bad feat, really - to hang on and be remembered 500 years later.

In an auspicious lining up of the planets - or whatever - today also happens to be the opening of the Bible and Critical Theory Seminar. I can honestly say that as I began organising the seminar there was no intention to line up these two events. It just happened ... well, things d

I'll have to cover the tour here

Well, it looks like I'll have to take over Tour de France coverage if SBS won't do it. A few photos from stage 4 - the time trials:

Article on religion in the International Socialist Journal

One out of a recent rush of my articles has appeared in nothing less that the International Socialist Journal (here). It's on religion and Marxism - the full story.

Humour in the Face of Death, Part 2

My father is weakening day by day, but here's another one that made me scream (silently) and laugh. As the cancer spreads he begins to feel pain. I arrived one morning to find him groaning away. 'Have you taken any pain killers?' I asked. 'A panadol', he said. 'A panadol?' I said. 'Why not two?' He replied, 'It's not good to get too used to it'.

SBS sidelines the Tour for the Cricket

This really pisses us off. SBS (the Special Broadcasting Service) has always covered the Tour de France live. Admittedly it is from 10pm to about 2.30am, but it's the TOUR, for Christ's sake. They've put it onto a sideline channel that you can get only with some newfangled digital setup. In its place comes ... the cricket. That stupid, stupid game invented by the English aristocracy - who else could come up with a game that starts at 10 am (in time to get over the hangover), has 'lucheon' and 't

Five Books That Have Left Me More Stupid

Jim West has memed me (here) - this time to name the five books that have left me just that little bit, or maybe a whole lot dumber. Usually alcohol does that, destroying an extra few brain cells every time you fill up. But reading rots your brain too. The rules are:

1. These are Biblical Studies books. Note that anything written by Tim LaHaye is not a Biblical Studies book.

2. Feel free to list multiple books by the same author, but you need to have at least three authors out of the five books.

3.

Lead up to the Bible and Critical Theory seminar

They are coming from far and not so far - to the Bible and Critical Theory Seminar. Michael Carden is certainly looking forward to it (here). Me too.

Striding into the night

Striding off into a cold, dark night, long coat buttoned up, hands deep in pockets, chin pushed down against the chill, small rucksack with the bare essentials – one of the best ways to begin a long journey.

Duck Tape

Airlines have become a little ratty in the USA. A few years ago on an ancient De Haviland Turboprop – propeller driven – I saw duck tape holding parts of the wing together.
