The Evernighties Blog Challenge - Week 21

Oh hell yeah!
There is nothing better than a get-a-way with Mike. He is fun, adventurous, and super sexy. Not to dive too much into our love life, but I love being with him...even if it's just to cuddle. We're always looking to do something romantic, so I say bring on the Love Boat.
We've both been on a cruise, although not together. He went on a family trip before we met, sailing down to the Bahamas. I was a little less traditional. I took an overnight cruise from Sweden to Finland, and it was an amazing experience that made me want to try a larger one. We've often talked about a cruise together one day, and someday I'd love to experience one with the love of my life.
Now...where would we go?
I would pick Alaska. Why? First...it's Alaska. How beautiful is that place? Not only the landscape but the wildlife. I think Mike would agree. I'm more of a country girl than a beach girl, but I wouldn't say no to the Bahamas.

The Cure Trilogy by Sandra Carmel!
Hello Sandra! Thank you so much for visiting Written Butterfly with me today! It’s such a pleasure to chat with you about your trilogy!
So tell me…
Q) Is your book part of a series? If so, can you tell us about it?
Capture, Discover and Reckoning are books one, two and three of The Cure trilogy.
The Cure trilogy blurb
It's beyond love at first sight the day 1960s geneticist, Richard Hall, spots Sub Rosa secretary, Eva Fjelstad. One sip of a newly-developed soulmate serum, and a brush of hands, confirms Richard and Eva are destined to be together.
But there's one problem.
Richard discovers corruption at the core of Sub Rosa—the research corporation he works for—and is faced with a decision no man wants to make. Should he stay true to his moral compass, and risk the relationship with his beloved Eva, to expose a generations-old atrocity? Or does he toe the company line, let vampires vanish from the world, and keep his soulmate safe, secure, and by his side forever?
For Sub Rosa personal assistant, Eden Freberg, kissing men is like making out with a mannequin. Cold, awkward, lifeless. That is until she meets alluring geneticist, Rick Hartman, and trades hot, sensual moves with him on a nightclub dance floor in 2010. From their first touch, they connect like long lost lovers, fitting together like missing pieces of a puzzle.
Eden is on an express train to beyond-this-world bliss—married, and with twins in less than a year. But the course of love derails when Eden and Rick discover a secret that shatters their identities and threatens their lives. Will their pasts catch up to them before Rick has a chance to gain retribution?
Murder of an allied researcher sends Rick and Eden into a spiral of desperation. Compelled to relocate to Norway, Rick infiltrates the Sub Rosa compound, where the Violet and Jade vampires are unjustly held captive. Can he find a way for the two warring vampire clans to work together to help him set them and his family free, finally bringing Sub Rosa to justice for their lifetime of sins?
I’d recommend reading the books in order to get a full understanding of Richard and Eva’s plight and hence follow their life-altering journey to its climactic conclusion.
Q) What was the easiest scene to write?
Generally, I find sex scenes the easiest and most fun to write. It probably helps because my characters tend to be rather horny. Lol!
Q) What type of research did you do for your book?
I needed to research World War II, the 1960s in Tasmania, Australia, and various time periods in Norway. I also had to brush up on cryogenics.
Q) What made this story special to you?
I enjoyed writing something that followed a range of characters across time, and touched on ethical decision-making and factored in a vast array of societal views. I also got a great deal of pleasure pulling together the complex storyline threads to come to what I hope everyone agrees is a more than satisfying ending to the series.
Q) Do you write in a linear fashion or do you jump from scene to scene and then go back and “fill in the blanks”?
On the most part, I’d say I don’t write in a linear fashion. I do tend to jump around, fleshing out ideas and then going back and adding to any areas that need further details.
Q) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
I originally thought I’d prefer stand-alone books, but what you hope for and what actually happens don’t always align. In the case of The Cure trilogy, it follows the two main characters, Richard Hall and Eva Fjelstad all the way through the series. However, I use multiple points of view, so readers also get to know several key characters. The Cure has an epic, erotic, paranormal saga type feel. It spans several time periods and introduces a range of characters. But never fear – it all comes together in book three, Reckoning.
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
I’ve started on a BDSM-themed series, set in Australia. I’ve written a first draft of book one and am currently in the rewriting phase. I also have ideas for book two and book three in the series so far. The stories centre around characters who are all connected to an exclusive BDSM club.
I’ve also written a steamy contemporary novella trilogy called Intertwined Love that I hope to have traditionally published.
Last Hope
A perilous journey to the peak of love…
Cole, a cutting-edge game software company CEO, stands up his long-term girlfriend, Hope, on Christmas Eve, the night he planned to propose, when he is left paralysed in a mountain climbing accident. He cuts her out of his life without explanation, determined not to burden her, but misses her like crazy. Can he confront his fears, pull himself back together and rekindle a relationship with the love of his life?
Game for Intimacy
Are you game?
While playing a sexy virtual reality game, Brody, a wheelchair-using gamer whiz makes an unlikely connection with Beth, the woman of his dreams. As they become more intimate, he learns her perfect facade hides demons deeper than his insecurities around his physical disability, putting a huge strain on their relationship. Can he help her break through her defensive walls and create an everlasting love?
The male protagonist, Brody, is Hope’s younger brother in Last Hope.
Dance of Love
An unexpected dance into virgin territory…
Jeb, a sexy, rare-breed, late-twenties virgin plagued with guilt and a history of heartache, falls for Issy, his open, passionate physio patient who is travelling overseas in a month to advance her dancing career. When they both finally acknowledge their attraction to each other, and he tells her his story, she offers to teach him how to be an excellent lover before she leaves. During the process, he develops strong feelings for her but with time running out, can he convince the woman he loves that they’re meant to be together?
The hero, Jeb, is Cole’s good friend and physio in Last Hope.

A sneak-peak snippet from Capture, Discover and Reckoning…
Capture
“You look like you really enjoyed that,” he said with a wicked smile that could just about melt off her clothes.
A heatwave soared under her skin and she licked her lips. “I did.” Two could play his titillating game.
He shifted in his seat, giving away exactly where his mind went—the dirtiest end of the gutter. She couldn’t help but smile. Now he knew how she felt being around him with his sexy masculine scent, irresistible green eyes and alluring, muscular body. A small moan escaped her lips and she covered it up with a cough.
Richard shifted closer. Would he make a move? Would he kiss her again? Between her hammering heart and labored breathing, she was seconds away from having a full-blown desire attack.
His personal space began to intersect with hers, and he stopped and chuckled.
“What?” Her voice sounded breathy, her body still recovering from his silent, unfulfilled promise of a kiss.
Richard reached up and caressed the corner of her mouth, sweeping away a ball of biscuit.
How embarrassing!
He cupped her face. “Saving it for later on?”
Her heart thumped so loud, he could probably hear it over the chattering speaker in his window. He tilted her chin up, his gaze switching between her eyes and her lips and he dipped his mouth to hers. His gentle kiss brushed her lips, tentative this time, as though checking to make sure she wanted it as much as he did. And she did, maybe more.
Eva parted her lips, welcoming his tongue, and she wound her arms around his neck. A groan sounded in his throat and she pressed into him, desperate to hear him do it again. And he did—deeper, longer.
Richard sank his hand into her hair and tugged just enough to set off a wave of warm tingles rolling across her scalp. He delved his tongue farther into her mouth, stroking and sucking on hers until he teased out a moan. His other hand traveled an achingly slow path along her curves and came to rest on her bare leg.
Each of her nerve endings pinged, like scoring in a game of pinball, and he was the expert player. She wanted to shed her clothes and be naked with him. Suddenly she didn’t care what society thought.
Being present in the sensual moment with Richard mattered most.
Where had this extra-sexualized Eva sprung from? Obviously, she’d been stuck somewhere deep in her psyche, so deep she hadn’t even realized her alter ego existed. It was like she represented Excalibur and Richard, King Arthur, the only man who could free her sexy side from stone.
Discover
A serious, I-really-want-to-kiss-you look shone in Rick’s eyes. There’d been glimpses of it all night, but the intention in his eyes right now had amplified a hundred times compared to before. This time it would happen.
The hematite, diamond and ruby soulmate ring on her finger flared with heat and she shifted in her seat, her heart slamming against her ribcage. Either she made a swift exit or stayed and took a huge risk.
“Um…I really should head home. It’s getting late and…” Eden looked around for her things.
She went to stand up and he grabbed her hand. “Don’t go.”
A rush of heat and electricity sizzled up her arm, and an overwhelming yearning blazed inside her core. Her mind buzzed. She stopped, still sitting on the edge of the couch, looked down at his hand on hers, then up at him.
His gaze shifted between her eyes and her lips. With his other hand, he reached up, caressed her cheek and leaned in.
The second his soft, inviting lips met hers, they melted away every hesitation, every rational thought in her head. The skin-on-skin contact seemed to set off a chemical reaction and ignited an untapped store of passion, her feelings rushing to the surface like an erupting geyser.
Eden’s animal instincts took over, and she threw her arms around Rick’s waist and crushed her mouth to his, her response matching his intensity and fervor.
When they finally pulled apart, they just stared at each other. Before now, she had never been lustfully out of control. Did that mean he was the one? Maybe he was just an amazing kisser?
Should she hang around and see how things panned out? Tempting, but no. She had to leave before she got too carried away and did something she might regret. Eden shifted forward on her seat.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“Home. I think I should…” She couldn’t look at him. She didn’t want him to see her face burning up.
“Please stay. You’re too tired to drive home. I’d never forgive myself if anything happened to you.” He inched closer and held her hand. “It would be irresponsible of me to let you go. I’ll set you up in the spare bedroom and you can drive home in the morning.”
The tingles in her arm hummed, strong and persistent, like she’d been freed from a deep, numbing sleep. Eden’s gaze met his and her breath hitched. God, so gorgeous. Was it possible for Rick to get more attractive by the minute?
“Look… It’s totally up to you but I’d prefer you stay for your own safety and…because I want you to. I promise I won’t hassle you…much.” That devilish grin on his face screamed dangerous. Disarming.
Reckoning
The prickle of budding tears burned her eyes. “What if things don’t work out how they’re supposed to?”
“We’ll deal with it then. There’s no point worrying about something that may or may not happen. I swore to keep you and the kids safe, first and foremost, and that’s one thing I won’t compromise on. Plus, even if you could safely go in my place, I wouldn’t allow it—those brown contact lenses sting like fuck. It feels like having shampoo constantly dripping into your eyes. And I wouldn’t want you to ruin your makeup.”
She laughed, sending a tear rolling down her cheek.
“Actually, that reminds me. I better go and put them in.” Rick swiped away the teardrop that had rolled onto her cheek, pressed a swift kiss to her lips and disappeared into the en suite.
Within seconds he stood in the doorway, the light glowing behind him as though he was some sort of angel…or superhero. “You’ve got to see this.”
She followed him into the compact bathroom and he pointed to a tissue on the vanity, containing what remained of the brown contact lenses he’d taken out the previous night. He’d never gotten a chance to put them in the bin, not with her impromptu blow job.
Delicious memories of him coming in her mouth, then lifting her up, throwing her on the bed and returning the favor surged into her mind. She indulged, just for a moment, then forced herself to stop and focus on the lenses.
They looked thin, cloudy, patchy, like mini jigsaw puzzles with pieces missing. A bit like their memories.
“I realize they’re disposable but…what happened to them?” Eden asked.
“Either they’re really bad quality, which would explain the price, or my body chemistry has caused their erosion. Probably a bit of both, though I’m thinking it’s more my body chemistry.”

Q & A with Katherine McIntyre!
Hello Katherine! Thank you so much for visiting Written Butterfly with me today! It’s such a pleasure to chat with you. So tell me…

Yes! Of Coppers and Cracksmen is the second in the Whitfield Files series. The series is about the Victorian streets of Islington, featuring an array of steampunk characters from technomancers to alchemists. Book two in the series is a forbidden love romance featuring a detective and a thief who’s currently being framed for murder. When she becomes the next target for the serial killer, Ellie and Bernard work together against the clock to try and stop the murderer before she ends up dead.
Q) What was the hardest (or easiest) scene to write?
The hardest scene to write was probably the fight scene at the end, which is a knife fight that I’m unfamiliar with. As for easiest, any of the banter between the two just flowed out on the page.
Q) What type of research did you do for your book?
I did a lot of the landscape and area research for book one in the series, so a lot of the continued research in this one was Victorian slang to get the dialogue right. I also dove into researching individual aspects of the book as I went through it, such as aspects about the cops and detectives of the time, how thieves operated back then, etc.
Q) Do you have a favorite book you’ve written?
I tend to have a favorite book in each series. Out of the Tribal Spirits series, Forged Futures ended up being my favorite, a combination of grief and cinnamon roll leads. In my Philadelphia Coven Chronicles series, my favorite was always Rising Autumn, featuring necromancers, cemeteries, and a whole lot of intense romance.
Q) Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
While each Whitfield Files book can work as a standalone, but each of the books features a different member of the Whitfield family, and so their stories intertwine, especially between the first and the third book.
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
Currently I’m switching gears out of steampunk and paranormal romance. I started diving into more queer contemporary romance, including a heist romance, a small-town F/F contemporary romance, and a geeky contemporary romance. I’m so excited to change directions as I’ve been reading more and more queer contemporary romance and falling in love with the genre.

When Ellie Whitfield’s accused of a crime she didn’t commit—though she’s committed many—only one man believes her. And he’s the unlikeliest man as well—Detective Bernard Taylor. He’s a handsome chap, but lawmen were never her type. At least, until now…
Bernard Taylor’s hunting down the Butcher of Broad Street, and though Ellie Whitfield’s led the coppers on a merry chase through Islington too many times, the woman’s no cold-blooded murderer. As they work together, he can’t help but be charmed by the vivacious Ellie, and before long, heated glances turn into something more explosive.
However, the closer they get to solving the murder, the deeper the serial killer draws them in—one misstep and they might be his next victims.

Excerpt:
The blood staining Ellie Whitfield’s hands was as good a reason as any to run from the mutton shunters. Not like she needed one—in her line of work, coppers meant bad news and missed coin. Still, the crimson painting her fingertips didn’t sketch her in the best light—not while crouching beside a corpse.
The shouts rang from the opposite end of the alley, which left no time for rotting about.
Ellie vaulted down the other side—toward the consuming shadows. The coins she’d nicked jangled in her trouser pockets, enough coin to pay their rent for the next month. Nothing someone as poor as a matchstick maker could pass up. The air on this side of town grew thick, coating her skin like oil, but she gulped mouthfuls. She reached the end of the alley, which bisected another one, tall buildings looming on either side.
The clang of police bells echoed through the quiet night in Camden Town.
At least, quiet until she’d mucked around the streets to watch the gents and ladies sashay by—their steps a little lighter after she’d absconded with their niceties. She wouldn’t have gotten caught if it wasn’t for the dead woman she’d stumbled into at the end.
Her ponytail streamed behind her, a few strands sticking to her sweaty forehead. The coppers loved to parade around like they owned this city, but she bolted in the direction of her home, Islington, one of the areas they’d all but given up on. The police only served those with enough coin to flash, and she’d been scraping from the moment she sprang from her mother’s womb.
Ellie’s shoes slapped against the cobbled streets louder than she liked, but right now she needed speed more than silence. The canal burbled in the distance, and the thump-thump-thump of the cops behind her whispered that moving quick-like was more essential than ever.
The blood dried on her fingertips as she balled her hands tight and raced through yet another alley in the shadow of a barber’s and a meat pie shop. Throughout all of London, the shadows marched at night, threatening to suffocate the weak, the foolish or the plain unlucky. She’d been all three in the past, yet had scraped through with her life.
Helps to have a technomancer for a sister.
The alleyway came to an end and she burst out onto the road. Once she stepped into view, a shout came from a few shops down, and the intense beams flashed their way from the hangman’s orbs—mechanisms that cast sunlight even in the dead of night. Blokes like them get equipped with all the knickknacks.
The three coppers had spotted her, and unless she found a hideaway to clean up in, the blood mucking up her blouse made her look as guilty as the governor. Ellie let out a whoop and threw a hand in the air as she surged forward, continuing the chase. If they wanted to target her, she’d run them ragged before making her escape.
At least, if lady luck didn’t abandon her tonight.
Clicks echoed from behind her, and a glance back rewarded her with the glow of aether in the modded pistols the coppers aimed her way. She couldn’t outrun a bullet.
To the right of her, the buildings stretched out, narrow alleys aplenty.
To the left of her, a few storefronts interspersed along the canal.
Luck never favored cowards.

The Evernighties Blog Challenge - Week 20

Let me preface this whole blog by saying I don't have a green thumb. Growing up, I thought it would be cool to be in 4H, but part of that was growing a garden. And while I did accomplish that (with the help of my dad) I learned that I didn't like it at all.
Growing up in rural Missouri, I learned all the how-to of a country life. Gardening. Picking. Blanching. Even canning, although I never did that consistently (and might not remember how to do thirty years later). I am not a fan of bugs and hated having to weed through the stalks, being surprised when spiders would come crawling out.
I live in the city now and have no plans to have a garden, but one day, when Mike and I retire to the country, I might do a small plot of just a few things. That's a HUGE maybe. Tomatoes. Green beans. Maybe carrots. And this may even come down to if Mike wants to take on a garden that I'll probably abandon.
Now...if I could grow bottles of wine, that might be a whole different ballgame.

EXCERPT:
How long he stuck around didn’t really matter. For all of Sully’s antics, at least he wasn’t Taylor. Sully had broken her heart, but he’d never broken her arm or her nose. She shivered and brushed a lock of hair from her eyes. No, Sully had bailed the moment he’d heard the word cancer. He proved to her letting people get too close was a liability.
Someone touched her shoulder, jerking her from her thoughts.
“Do you mind if I sit with you?”
The gravelly voice rolled down her back. Heat enveloped her and not from the August night. The twinge of fear subsided, replaced by the strength of his presence. She dragged a long breath into her lungs and sighed. “Sully.”
Sully shuffled his feet and crinkled his brows. His cocoa-colored eyes glittered in the firelight. He’d shaved the midday scruff from his cheeks but left a sprinkling of hair on his chin and upper lip. Instead of wearing the standard bandana, his hair stood in messy spikes, giving him a tousled, straight-out-of-bed look. His cologne wrapped around her like a woodsy blanket. Her mouth watered. How could one man look so darned sexy without effort?
“Chores are done, you’re free, I’m free. I wanted a dance for old times’ sake.” The silver ring on the middle finger of Sully’s right hand caught the light as he gestured to her. “Will you dance with me, Marley? I don’t have cooties, man germs, or any other gross diseases.”
Man germs…good grief. She needed an answer to put him back in his place. “Dancing isn’t my thing.”
Why did Sully make her so nervous? Because Sully made her inner thighs heat and her heart thunder. Every time she heard him sing, she swooned. Hell, when they worked side by side on the wagons, she resisted the urge to smother him with kisses. She pressed her lips together. The idea of his sexy naked body melding with hers had haunted her dreams since she hit puberty. Of all the men she knew, Sully remained elusive and out of reach. And yet, he’d come back when she needed him the most…like a white knight. God, she had to get the childish, fanciful thoughts from her head and regain her footing in the real world.
He eased down next to her and sighed. “I don’t buy that for a moment, but I’m not gonna push.” He bumped her shoulder with his, sending a frisson of lust snaking through her body. “I missed our late-night conversations.” A chuckle erupted from his throat. “You got so deep.”
“You know, I never found someone to understand me like you do.” She balled her fists to keep from touching him and stared at the crisp yellow flames. Sully smelled like sin and pine. “Conversationalist is my middle name.”
Sully cupped her chin, redirecting her gaze. “And all this time I thought it was Elaine.”
Despite wanting to stay, Marley stood. “I never could fool you.”
“Dance?”

Flashback Friday...Between You & I

The passion of the younger man nearly infects her until Hunter tries to articulate it with the three words she refuses to hear. When she pushes him away, wounding his heart, she finds her own broken all over again.
Still, Madeline struggles to leave the past and accept that when Hunter said, "I love you," he wasn't just speaking for himself.

Excerpt:“I had a great time,” Hunter murmured.
Madeline wet her dry lips with her tongue. His head moved fractionally closer.
“Me…” She had to clear her throat from the huskiness coming through. “Me too.”
He smiled and their gazes met. Locked. She had this sense of free falling, just plunging head first into an unknown abyss. Had she ever felt like this with Kevin? With him everything had been easy. Simplistic. Nothing like what she was feeling now, with Hunter. He brought his hand up to cup her cheek, and she leaned into it, absorbing his heat. His eyelids narrowed a bit and his attention shifted to her mouth. All sorts of delicious tingles spread through her body because she knew he was going to kiss her. God! She wanted to kiss him back so much it was an ache deep in her gut. His head descended and her eyes fluttered shut just as the first touch of his mouth on hers brushed her lips. So gentle, like the dewy wisp of butterfly wings, and she wondered if he had kissed her at all.
She opened her eyes. The desire pooling in his blue eyes brought a gasp to her lips. His head descended again and this time, he held nothing back. Wild. Erotic. He slid his tongue over hers, tangling, dancing, and sending delicious sensations vibrating over all her nerve endings. Hot and smooth, tasting of everything dark and velvety. She’d never experienced a kiss quite like it before.
And she wanted more.

Beth D. Carter has crafted a tale that is full of hope. Madeline may have had her heart broken and her dreams shattered, but through her new friendship with Hunter, she's given a second chance. Despite her fears over developing anything serious with the younger guy, Hunter pursues her and proves that not all men are insensitive jerks. I loved the instant sparks that flamed between them and the way he always put her first. It was a sweet story, and one I will probably read again.

The Evernighties Weekly Blog Challenge - Week 19

The word "blond" is a bit of a pain in the ass for me because it's one of those rare English words that has to be defined as masculine and feminine. And I can NEVER remember which is which. This is the official definition:
"The word originally came into English from Old French, where it has masculine and feminine forms. As an English noun, it kept those two forms; thus, a blond is a fair-haired male, and a blonde is a fair-haired female."
Back when I was a young starry-eyed teenager, I was in love with Luke Skywalker...who was a blond. So I thought I liked fair-haired, blue eyed men. My tastes changed as I grew older, especially once I got into my 40s. I now like the Silver Foxes and those attractions are reflected into my characters. Rarely do I write blond/blonde characters, and when I do, I tend to use it as an analogy for "innocent" people (male or females). I recently had a story accepted by Evernight for publication about an angel, and yes, I made her blonde. She may be an atypical angel, but still, blonde hair gives that illusion.
Usually, I'm writing about dark hair men with silver in their hair, and not quite a typical female. I like character flaws, whether or not that includes freckles, scars, or any other type of imperfection. I don't like cookie cutters in my stories. I'm very conscious about how the character looks that reflects in the arc that I give them.
So I would say no...blondes don't really have more fun. At least, not in my worlds.
