Book Reivew - The Baby Contract by Olivia Starke

First the disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book for an honest review and I really have!  Warning, may give a few tiny spoilers.
The premise intrigued me.  I’ve read a lot of “billionaire” stories but I’ve never read one where the billionaire needed a baby to secure his inheritance.  It seems like a simple concept and yet it’s anything but for Liam Whitmore III.  Sure, he’s found the perfect woman to be his baby mama, but it’s the unexpected feelings that develop that are the problem.
This was the first book by Ms. Starke that I’ve read and I really liked her writing style.  It was smart, intelligent, and witty, and kept a fast pace that made this book a real page turner.  She really gave a sense of this world by showcasing just how much a workaholic Liam is and how much the heroine, Abby, needs the money.
The other things I liked about the book might seem petty, but for someone who writes erotica romance I had to appreciate.  The cover is amazing.  I love it's simplicity that manages to reveal a depth to the couple from a single snapshot.  Next, the sex was hot, but not overt like a lot of erotica romances.  Sure there were graphic words a plenty, but somehow it felt more basic than some other stuff I've read (or written!).
The bad guy’s motives were very believable, surprisingly.  I mean, we go on a tangent about him knocking up some girl he had an affair with and now has to pay her off.  That and his gambling debts makes him a real scumball, but not enough of one to just commit murder to get what he needs.  Killing someone would be, I assume, very traumatizing for most of us and it was good to know that even though the bad guy was a lousy everything else, he wasn't so far gone as to cross that line.  Now, someone else, sure and Ms. Starke was sure to cover her bases there, just to keep it all interesting.
My one complaint was, at times, Liam was almost unlikable.  More than one time I wanted to shake him. After the baby making they seemed to spend more time apart then they did together and misunderstandings kept coming in their way.  There wasn't much of a build up of them learning a lot about each other.  That may seem overly critical but that's just one small portion of the book and believe me, writers read critique and reflect on it to learn.  At least I do, and I think Ms. Starke is a fabulous writer.
In the end, it all came together for a happy ever after.  This book was pretty clean of errors and had an interesting story.  I would definitely recommend it with a glass of wine and a comfortable chair.

Having a baby is Abby's dream. Will Liam's enemies stop her happily ever after?
Liam Whitmore III is floored by the surprise stipulation in his father's will—provide an heir within one year or he'll lose the controlling portion of Whitmore Incorporated to his cousin Spencer. The corporation is Liam's life. He'll do anything to keep his cousin's hands off of it, including finding a woman who'll bear his child. Though finding the right woman seems an impossible task since he doesn't have room in his life for anything except running the company. He doesn't want a wife, just an heir.
Abby Haden's family is about to lose their ranch, the only life her ailing father and brother have ever known. She feels helpless and is desperate to help. When the most coveted bachelor in Austin, Liam Whitmore III, also known as the Takeover Tyrant, offers to pay her to have his child it seems too incredible to be true. She's all but given up hope of ever having a baby. Not only will her dream of being a mother come true, but she can also save the family ranch.
It was just supposed to be a business deal, but Abby and Liam find it hard to keep their hearts out of what it takes to make a baby. Even as they sort out their feelings, others have their eye on Whitmore Incorporated. Liam and Abby will soon discover how far they'll go to make sure Abby never produces that heir.
Content Warning: contains graphic sex, explicit language, mild violence, and a heroine with a history of domestic abuse

The Baby Contract – Excerpt
Abby closed her eyes tight and pressed send on her phone. Liam's phone rang once, twice, three times. A bit relieved, she waited to be routed to his voicemail.
"Liam Whitmore's office."
She sucked in a hard breath and nearly dropped the phone. "Uh…hi…this is Abby Haden, Abigail Haden that is."
"Yes, Miss Haden," the receptionist said quickly. "Please hold."
Several seconds passed.
"This is Liam."
"I…" Abby paused, searching her heart one last time. Her grip on her cellphone tightened, and her courage failed. "I…I…"
"What's the holdup?" Liam asked, his voice gruff.
She flinched. "H-holdup?" she stammered.
"Seven hundred fifty thousand dollars, and that's the final offer, Miss Haden. Take it or leave it."
Abby blinked. "That's not—"
"Take it or leave it," Liam interrupted. "I want an answer now."
His brisk tone set her on edge and raised her ire. Her courage returned. "Fine, but I have a requirement."
His pause felt tangible through the phone, and she feared he'd had second thoughts. Not that she'd back down from her decision.
"What is it?" He nearly growled the question.
She filled her lungs with air. "I want two hundred fifty thousand upon conception, the rest after the baby is born."
Another pause. "We have a deal." His anger had disappeared, his voice holding no hint of emotion.
Abby blew out her pent-up breath. "Okay, good. I've been unable to find a clinic for the…the artificial, um, you know." She placed a cool palm on her flaming hot cheek. If it was possible to die from embarrassment, she'd be a goner for sure.
"I'm not following you, Miss Haden," Liam said. She heard papers shuffling in the background. "I'll have the contract drawn up."
"Artificial insemination," Abby blurted out.
"Artificial insemination?" He sounded taken aback. "I hadn't considered any such thing."
Abby frowned in confusion. "How else are we going to get me pregnant?"
Liam's laughter echoed through the phone. Rich and throaty, it sent a hot tingle down Abby's spine. Goose bumps broke out over her skin.
"Miss Haden, there are such pleasurable ways of making a baby that are quite successful," he said, his voice dropping to a deep rumble over the phone. Abby took a shuddering breath as it did obscene things to her insides. His tone returned to its more business-like manner. "I have a cabin in Aspen. As soon as your cycle is at the most likely time for you to conceive we'll fly up there for a week," he said. "AI would take too much time," he added.
"I-I didn't plan on that," Abby stuttered, her mind reeling. Sex hadn't been in the equation when she'd made her decision. Sex? With Liam? Oh my God. Her heart kicked into overdrive. "Look, Mr. Whitmore—"
"I'll set up an appointment with my physician for STD tests. Can you be there tomorrow afternoon by, say…" He paused briefly. "Three-thirty?"
"Mr. Whitmore, I—"
"Do you know when you'll most likely ovulate again?"
Abby blinked, she was being steamrolled.
"Miss Haden, it's a simple question. I need to know."
She looked at her calendar, she'd already figured up the days in case she'd gotten an appointment at one of the clinics she called. "Um, next week, but listen—"
Liam pushed on. "I'll have everything set up. We can leave for Aspen late Sunday evening. My personal assistant will be in touch tomorrow morning to give you directions to my physician's office."
"Mr. Whitmore, there's no way I can get off work for a week on such short notice. It's Tuesday," she insisted, trying to backpedal.
"It's taken care of. Don't worry, Abigail," he said.
The sound of her given name rolling off his tongue caught her off guard. It stopped her next objection dead in its tracks.
"What's your contact number?" he asked.
Abby gave him her cellphone number.
After a quick 'thank you' Liam hung up, leaving Abby in a bit of a stupor. His driven personality explained his business success, as well as the rumored success he had with women. He was a raging river and she had been helplessly swept along in its current.

Welcome Elizabeth Monvey! New Author!

Hello Elizabeth!  Thank you so much for visiting Written Butterfly!  You are a brand new author and I'm honored that you picked my blog to showcase your first book!

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
Thank you so much for hosting me!
Living in Los Angeles, I've had my fair share of earthquakes and I've always made a joke that if I was in an apartment building, I'd want to be on the top floor so if the building came down I wouldn't have that much rubble on top.  Gruesome, I know.  (I'm a secret Investigation Discovery addict)
But that led me to dream about two lovers separated by an earthquake so that's how I dreamed up Tighe and Scotty.  The rest just fell into place and I'm super happy that this book is the first one for me being published.

Q) Do you have any habits that get you in the writing frame of mind?
Coffee.  Music.  I have a young child so I'm used to working through distraction.  I get ideas for stories all over the place so I always carry pen and paper with me wherever I go.  Sometimes I jot things down and then come home and type it up.

Q) What are your upcoming projects?
I am working on a series for Evernight titled "My Boyfriend Is..." .  It's Romance on the Go stories (about 8-12 thousand words) of men who find out they have a supernatural boyfriend.  So far there's My Werewolf Boyfriend and My Vampire Boyfriend.  I just submitted My Alien Boyfriend (fingers crossed it's picked up!).  I have a bunch more of these stories up my proverbial sleeve.
Bother Me BLURB

Thirty-eight year old Tighe Valentine has moved to Los Angeles to help care for his ailing mother.  His next door neighbor, Scotty, lives a carefree life of surfing and beach parties and pretty soon, Tighe starts wondering how in the world a much younger man managed to capture his fascination.
For Scotty Tilden, Tighe is his dream man, if only Tighe would see it his way.  But his sexy neighbor is stubborn and in denial of his true sexuality which is in contrast to how Scott lives his life.
And then the world turns upside down as a devastating earthquake rips everything apart.  As Tighe searchers desperately for Scotty, all he can think about and pray for is finding alive the man who’s stolen his heart.
EXCERPT

As he gathered up the equipment he needed for the work ahead, the horses began to neigh and dance around in their stalls.  He stopped and checked them out, as did the other workers, but the horses distress only increased.            A second later the earth began to shake.            This wasn’t some minor thing.  Even not knowing a thing about earthquakes Tighe knew this was big.  He was knocked off his feet and he grabbed one of the stall walls in an effort to keep himself upright.  It was a loosing battle and down he went, as did half the barn.  Men were yelling, horses were screaming, and to Tighe it seemed like the world was ending.  The rolling waves lasted forever as he was battered with wood and debris and all he could do was cover his head and pray that the rollercoaster ride ended soon.              And then just like that, it did.            His stomach, however, was still quavering as he pushed off the rubble and got to his feet.  There were moans and groans coming from various piles and he moved mechanically, helping men detangle themselves.  No one seemed hurt worse than some cuts and scrapes but two horses were hurt bad.  The others had escaped the barn and were currently running around wild, clearly frightened out of their minds.  When the next earthquake it, it wasn’t as strong and Tighe was able to stay on his feet.  It only lasted a few seconds, however and things were still once more.            “This isn’t going to go on forever, is it?” he asked one of his co-workers.              The man shook his head.  “After shocks.  Might be a few more, might not be.”            Tighe dug out his cell phone but there wasn’t any signal.  Something that powerful must have knocked out a few cell towers.  His first thought was his mother.  The second thought was Scotty.            “I have to get back to the city,” he told everyone.  “I have family.  I have…”            He was going to say a boyfriend, but Scotty wasn’t really his boyfriend.  He could’ve been, but he’d fucked up.  What if something happened to Scotty?  Oh God, he couldn’t seem to stop fucking up.  He had to find him.

Tyler Robbins Visits - Q & A on the New Release BROKEN NEON!

Hi Tyler!  Thank you so much for visiting Written Butterfly with me today! I'm so excited to hear about your new book "Broken Neon"!

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?
I suppose, before answering that question, I should explain why I created the characters in the first place. As a fan of all music genres, and a lifelong Texan, country music has played a monumental role in my life. Country music is probably the most “stereotyped” genre in the industry. While depicting a love of Freedom, God and Country, perhaps it has inadvertently excluded or rejected a significant percentage of the population, whereas Pop and other music genres have embraced entertainers and fans from all walks of life much more openly, encouraging a tolerance of all people regardless of age, sex, race, creed or sexual orientation. The time has come for the acceptance of entertainers who reflect a true representation of all types of people, not just those who fit a certain mold. Each of my heroes are down to earth, “good ol’ country boys” with a strong sense of family and respectable convictions, much like the selection of people country music claims to cater to. However, what sets them apart is that these particular gentlemen just so happen to love each other rather than some sweet, southern belle. And that should be represented as well.
Q) Do you have any habits that get you in the writing frame of mind?
One thing I often require is silence. No distractions, no music, no TV, and no interruptions unless there’s an emergency. One bad habit I have, which is probably the unhealthiest, is snacking (especially when the writing is flowing best) and not getting enough exercise. My thighs and gluteus maximums are all the proof anyone needs that writing can be hazardous to your health. J
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
Currently, I am adding M/M novellas to my self-published series, the Blue Haven Boys while working on full length M/M novels to submit for publishing consideration. One huge project is my first ever MMF paranormal ménage. I am very excited and look forward to seeing how it all turns out.

Blurb:
Country music singer, Zane Alexander has struggled to keep his sexuality a secret, but hiding his attraction to their new guitarist, Finn Presswood, is damn near impossible. On the run from a dangerous ex-lover, Finn has secrets of his own, but his feelings for Zane isn’t one of them.
When the new song they co-wrote leads to a recording contract with a major Nashville label, it becomes clear that their lives are about to change. Unfortunately, secrets are harder to hide in the limelight, so Zane fake-dating a famous supermodel whose career is on the line as well, seems like the best solution for everyone.
Their dreams are finally within their grasp until Finn’s past catches up, and no matter how much the two men love each other, happiness is never guaranteed. If good intentions pave the road to hell, then broken neon paves the road to Nashville.
 Excerpt:
As he crossed the threshold, he tossed his hat onto the table and made a beeline to the mini-fridge. The door closed behind them, but Zane paid it little mind as he bent down to retrieve two cold beers. When he turned around, his heart skipped a beat.Finn stood directly behind him, his shirt already unbuttoned and his jaw flexed taut. The hungry look in Finn’s eyes made Zane’s cock swell.“Shit.” Zane let the bottles of beer fall to the floor as Finn moved in.Their teeth clanked together from the voracious kiss, igniting the explosive passion that had been building between them. Tongues tangled, battling for domination, while clothes and boots flew about the room.“I’ve wanted this…” Finn panted. “So fucking long.”“Shut the hell up.” Zane shoved Finn back onto the bed and crawled up the length of him.Zane felt Finn’s hardened cock jam into his side, and he reached down to stroke it without hesitation.
Finn pushed Zane’s hand away and flipped him over, then glared down into his eyes. “You better make this last.” Finn’s gravelly tone only added to the need pulsing through Zane’s cock.He kissed Finn’s shoulder and chest as he dug his nails into Finn’s back.Finn winced and kissed Zane even harder, rocking his groin against Zane’s thigh. Pre-cum seeped from Finn’s thick shaft, dampening Zane’s skin. He swallowed hard, wanting nothing more than to lick the crown clean. He gripped Finn’s cock, and stroked it, causing Finn to bite down on Zane’s bottom lip as they kissed.Zane reciprocated by sucking Finn’s lip into his mouth, while his mind ventured to thoughts of what he’d rather be sucking. The desire surprised Zane a little. Usually, he was the one being pleasured, but this was different. Zane wanted to get Finn off so badly, he could taste it.He pushed up on Finn’s shoulders and kissed his way down his chest.Finn rolled off and lay on his back. He ran his fingers through Zane’s hair and moaned as Zane moved lower. The sound excited Zane even more. His own cock ached. His need for release intensified with each blood-surging pulse.Zane gripped Finn’s shaft firmly then wrapped his tongue around the crown.Finn shuddered.
Salty sweetness coated Zane’s taste-buds. He tongue fucked the slit, searching for every drop Finn had to offer.“Feels so fucking good.” Finn writhed and pulled Zane’s hair.Zane swallowed Finn’s shaft. His eyes and mouth watered as each bob of his head plunged deeper. He flattened his tongue along Finn’s cock and lapped his satiny flesh like an ice cream cone.Finn groaned and grabbed Zane’s arm, tugging him upward until they were chest to chest once again. He peered down into Finn’s eyes as they hugged each other close. Zane had missed this feeling. This connection. This sense of giving himself to someone. He hadn’t shared this kind of mutual intimacy since before he started singing professionally, and even that was nothing more than teenage infatuation.Finn’s eyelids lowered to half-mast. “Don’t stop.”The urgency in Finn’s tone fueled Zane’s resolve. He’d take his new lover all the way to the other side. Past the point of no return. All of Zane’s previous doubts faded fast. “Once I have you, I might not want to let you go.”He’d tried so hard to deny himself this pleasure. Kept it hidden, only allowing a few stolen moments with someone he’d paid to deliver, but none of that compared to letting his guard down and really indulging.“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”Zane leaned in and kissed him tenderly, savoring the feel of Finn’s lips pressed to his. The taste of his tongue and the warmth of his body fused to his own. This was exactly what Zane had wanted for so long.If Zane were ever able to offer a man everything, Finn Presswood could damn sure be the man he’d give it to.

Welcome Elodie Parkes! Q&A with the Charaters!

Hello Elodie!  Thank you so much for visiting Written Butterfly!  What a beautiful cover!  Elodie is talking about her hot ménage Evernight Publishing Romance on the Go release, Night of the Horse.

Night of the Horse is erotic paranormal romance. A steamy contemporary love story with a twist. It’s set in present day England in a semi-rural town. Summer has just begun and Rosie, our heroine, is feeling wistful. She’s lonely and beginning to wonder if she’ll ever find love.I got the inspiration from seeing a paddock full of horses on one of my journeys for my day job. There’s a specific route I have to take to get to part of the county. It takes me through beautiful countryside and past what I believe is the back of a horse stud. They were running, galloping around and around as if they were in some mysterious race only they knew about. I found a place to take my Jeep off the road and walked back to photograph them. I’d only taken a few minutes to do it, but when I reached the paddock where the fence allowed access, only two horses remained there, a white one with a long flowing mane and a tall glossy black one. Who knows where the others had gone, maybe over the hill through a gap in hedgerow I couldn’t see.I stood by the fence and both horses walked down to me. I had climbed onto the bottom wooden bar of the fence and balanced there. The black one came right away up to me and nudged my shoulder. Then the white one pushed the black one’s head away, turned back to me, and nodded. I think they were used to someone coming along with apples or carrots, but it was funny, and so nice to have those two gorgeous animals communicate with me like that.On my way back home after work the paddock was empty. That night I started writing, Night of the Horse.

A lonely young woman signs up for dance lessons. Two gorgeous guys find her as fascinating as she finds them. On the country road where she lives, she hears horses in the night, and opens her bedroom window to watch them gallop. They’re beautiful, a silver white horse and tall black horse...they turn to stare at her. Had they heard and understood when she sighed over them?

Today two of the main characters Jude and Rosie are visiting the blog.
Rosie, would you like to tell the readers about how you and Jude met?
Rosie: We met on the high street in the doorway of the art supply shop didn’t we Jude?
Jude:We did meet then. I liked her as soon as I saw her. That was before we actually met. I’d seen her around shall we say. I don’t want to give spoilers.
Rosie:That’s true because although I didn’t know it I’d watched him from a distance.
Jude: You did more than watch you sighed over me. You sighed over Justin too. That’s another story, but just so you know my best friend loves Rosie too. It’s all cool. He leans across and kisses Rosie, then keeps hold of her hand.
Rosie, Can you describe when you first knew you were in love with Jude?
Rosie:That would be the first time we made love, it was sex that turned into making love. For me anyway. Although I liked him the moment I saw him, in the shop doorway. I wanted those arms around me right away.
Jude:I loved her from day one. I saw her in the country road where she lived and she passed the shop on the high street when Justin and I were moving the stuff in after we bought it. She hurried by and I watched her go. I said to Justin, ‘look at that lovely girl. The way she moves, her pretty hair, something about her makes me tingle.’
Rosie: You never told me that before. Justin said you were the one who said if it’s meant to be I’d find you both. That’s lovely Jude. She leans across and kisses him this time .I better ask another question since now they are starting to get a little heated.
What’s one thing you might have changed about your story?
Rosie:Not a thing, since it’s the real thing. Although I’ve never been happy with my name, and that I’m not very tall, both Jude and Justin can tuck me under their arm.
Jude:That’s so sexy, Rosie, that I can pick you up and cuddle you into my body. You’re beautiful the way you are. As for me changing the story. More sex. Although there’s loads, I’m addicted to Rosie and I find it hard to keep my hands off her. I’m happy with the ending that’s the best ending ever.
Jude, tell us something about Rosie, how would you describe her in a few words?
Jude:She’s very pretty, slender, intelligent. I think she’s kind and generous, and she treats people really well. She’s brave too. She likes the countryside and animals. Starts to laugh and hugs Rosie.
Rosie, describe Jude in a few words.

Rosie: Very sexy, giving, clever, thoughtful, a great lover, knows what he wants or needs to do and goes for it. Very creative and talented artistically.
So what’s hot about the story?
Jude: Two gorgeous guys and one girl. The steam rises from the love scenes.  Two men who are so different, one whose gentle, sensual lovemaking wraps you in a haze of lust. The other whose hot, raw sexual need, wets you through and takes you on a wild ride to bliss. Who doesn’t dream of having both? Now Rosie is stroking Jude’s arm, okay time for an excerpt.
How about you both choose your favorite scene from the book.
Rosie:It has to be a love scene for me, what about you Jude?
Jude:I think so, the hotter the better. (Grins)

Chosen snippet, 18+   Jude made the slightest sound. “You’re not wearing panties.” He licked her thighs and stroked between them with his fingers, teasing her wet pussy until Rosie melted. She throbbed with need. Jude stood and held her to his body as he fingered her. Rosie leaned into him and turned her face up to be kissed as he pushed his fingers into her pussy, in and out, until she clung to him her mouth against his jaw.She tried to unzip his jeans and fumbled about until he stopped kissing her and smiled.“I’ll help.” He moved his fingers from her pussy and undid his jeans.Rosie took hold of them and pulled them down his thighs until his cock sprang free. It looked so big, hard and thick, a rush of sexual longing made her breasts feel heavy. Cream ran from her pussy onto the inner tops of her thighs.A murmur escaped her. “Oh, you’re only wearing jeans. It’s so sexy.” She pulled his jeans to his ankles. “You have no shoes on, Jude.”His answer was just a sound as he stepped out of his jeans, pushing them off with his feet. Rosie knelt holding his cock low on the shaft. She took half into her mouth, and then ran her tongue around the head, before she sucked as much as she could into her mouth. Jude moaned and moved his hips. Rosie put her other hand between his legs and stroked his balls.“Rosie. Rosie,” he whispered, breathing fast. She let go of his cock and stood. Jude lifted her and carried her from the open field to the edge of the woods. The silver-white horse stood watching them as Jude lay Rosie on a patch of lush grass and leaned over her. “I need to fuck now before I lose it and come all over you, instead of in you.”Rosie opened her legs and Jude lay between them. She guided him to her entrance, and then pushed her hips up to meet him as he thrust into her. It felt so good she moaned in relief at having him inside her. He thrust in and out as she wrapped her legs around his waist. His arms were next to her breasts as he supported himself, and the muscles felt hard, and sexy. She lifted her arms, holding his head to hers when he kissed her. He slowed his thrusts and moved his face back from hers to watch her face as they fucked.“You’re beautiful, lovely.”Rosie pulled his head back to have his kiss. He thrust his cock into her hard as his lips found hers. Rosie’s orgasm shot up through her as the very core of her body convulsed with delicious, mind numbing waves. The pleasure so great she held Jude’s head tight until she stopped coming.

Q & A with Jacey Holbrand!

Welcome Jacey Holbrand!  Thank you so much for visiting Written Butterfly!  Congrats on your new release, The Encounter!  Can I say, your cover is super sexy??!!

I’m so excited! My story The Encounter is now available!

The Encounter is the first book in a series I’ve started called: The Agency. An ‘advertisement’ for The Agency goes something like this: “Seen a ghost? Have issues with a poltergeist? Experienced a close encounter? If you’ve come across something odd and don’t know what your next step is, call The Agency. We’re here to help you regarding your supernatural needs.”

Cool, right? (: I’m currently at work on the next few stories in this series, but for now check out The Encounter available from Evernight Publishing.

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of your characters?

A]  I originally wrote the story for an anthology call where an alpha boss was to be paired with an assistant. I figured a story in the anthology would be a good start for the series I’m writing and then ‘poof’ the characters were there in the forefront of my mind ready to be written.
Q) Do you have any habits that get you in the writing frame of mind?
A]  Going for a walk helps to clear my mind, get the blood and thoughts flowing, and give my muse a happy boost.
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
A]  As of answering this question, I’m waiting to hear on a submission for a steampunk series, I have more The Agency stories in the works and hope to get some shifter stories in another series going and out in an editor’s queue somewhere by the end of the year.

Blurb The Agency, 1Evan ‘Zen’ Zenas is the top agent at The Agency and is known for his brusque demeanor. He’s also known to be tough on trainees. Those who find themselves under his tutelage usually don’t last long. When he’s assigned a new assistant, Seth Trivos, Zen’s faced with questions about his past he’s not too keen on answering.Seth Trivos knew Evan once upon a time, loved him even, but when Evan disappeared, he unknowingly broke Seth’s heart. Now, he’s in Evan’s world as the newest recruit at The Agency, and he’s looking for answers. Will Zen chase away another new assistant because he doesn’t want to open up about a past encounter or will being forced on a case together make him face the demons he’s been trying to hide from? Be Warned: m/m sex
Excerpt Zen threw his arms around him in a tight hold and claimed his mouth with wild abandon. Seth’s head reeled. He couldn’t believe he and Zen were kissing. Granted, it wasn’t anything like the soft moments and slow love making he’d imagined over the years, but he’d take what he could get at the moment.Zen moved his hands up and down Seth’s back. The heated touch under his jacket and over his shirt seared his skin in a delightful way. Zen’s lips pressed upon his almost too violently. He swept his tongue out, forcing Seth to open his mouth.Seth adored the taste of him, salty and spicy, and his scent of leather and earth as well.God, for so long he’d waited to have Zen in his arms, his body close. Zen’s lips trailed down his neck. Seth reached up and cupped the back of Zen’s head. Zen pulled at his shirt, tugging it from the confines of his pants without breaking the kiss. In the process of kissing him, somehow Zen was able to unbutton and unzip both their pants and free their cocks out of the openings.Desire rushed through Seth, clawing at his insides. Zen clutched at him like a drowning man scrambling for purchase on any floating thing to save him from the watery depths. Hands traveled over his shoulders, up his shirt, feeling all the nuances of his chest and back down to his rock-hard cock. The man held their dicks against each other, and Seth sucked in a long stream of air. The feel of their two satiny lengths rubbing together was a heady sensation.Zen turned their bodies and laid them down. He stretched over Seth. Seth loved feeling the weight and heat of Zen’s strong body atop his. Still, Zen continued to kiss him, and he continued to surrender to the demand of Zen’s mouth.

Paper Kisses - Behind the Scenes

Here are five quick things you might not know about my novel, Paper Kisses:

1) It was originally titled "The Love Dance".

2) The town this book is set in, Dexter, Missouri, is my hometown where I grew up.

3) It started off as a story, was converted into a movie script, and then I turned it into an ebook.

4) Alannah's name went through three different name changes.  (Sky has always been Sky)

5) Someone actually told me this line from the book, after watching The Tudors:  “I watched and then started to think about you, and how you
never look like those girls on that show anymore. You used to be sexy, skinny, and now you just sit on the couch all the time. I miss that girl you used to be. I miss the sex we used to have. I don’t find you attractive anymore."

To this day I've never watched that show.  I can't.  I decided Alannah was a good way to get that painful moment off my chest, although I'll never forget the words.  You can't un-hear something once it has been said.  Buddha said whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influence by them for good or ill.

I am happy that this book has been pleasantly received.  From the reviews, people seem very surprised that they enjoyed it!  Alannah's confusion and pain is shared by many, which I think people can relate to.  This is a current review of Paper Kisses: http://www.nightowlreviews.com/v5/Reviews/Vrainey-reviews-Paper-Kisses-by-Beth-D-Carter

When Alannah’s husband tells her she’s boring and he doesn’t want to be married to her anymore she spirals into a world of hurt and confusion.  She decides to go back to her hometown in Missouri to figure out where she lost the confident girl she used to be.
Speeding into town, she’s pulled over by her old best friend, Skylar Randall, now the town sheriff.  He’s still mad at her for leaving twelve years ago without a word of good-bye.  But suddenly Sky isn’t just her high school friend anymore, he’s morphed into a man who goes after what he wants, and he’s just declared he wants her.
But Sky’s private world is one full of bondage and in trying to silence the doubts in her head, he will tie her up as long as it takes for her realize that what she really left behind was faith, hope and whole lot of kisses.** Be Warned: BDSM, anal sex

Q&A with Nikka Michaels! Executive Assistant - Manlove Edition

Welcome Nikka Michaels!  Thank you so much for visiting with me at Written Butterfly!  I just read the blurb and excerpt for “His Assistant” and wow!  I’m in love already!
Hi Beth! Thanks for having me on the Written Butterfly today.
Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of Justin and John’s relationship?
I loved the idea of applying a BDSM relationship with a power exchange to an office environment but flipping it. Instead of the high power executive John being powerful and in charge behind closed doors, his executive assistant Justin is in charge. I love the idea of the power shift.
Q) Do you have any habits that get you in the writing frame of mind?
I read a lot, and listen to music. I think reading is a vital part of writing. For each project I have separate play lists that I listen to that help me get in the writing frame of mind.
Q) What are your upcoming projects?
I have a few WIP’s at the moment, both with my co-writer Eileen Griffin and solo. The collaborative projects include books three and four from the same universe of In the Raw and In the Fire coming out from Carina Press in October and November 2014. Books three and four are both foodie romances like the first two and one is MM and the other is MF. For a solo project I’m working on a MM novel with a vet dealing with PTSD and who finds a new life through volunteer service with a veteran’s organization.

These sizzling hot stories dare to explore the taboo world of office romance. From X-rated job interviews, controlling Doms, to the unprofessional use of office furniture—these seven stories have it all.
Our bestselling authors are determined to make you squirm. You may never see the office the same way again!
Authors:Cat Blaine, JC Holly, Xondra DayNicola Cameron, Noelle KeatonPelaam, Nikka Michaels
HIS ASSISTANT BLURB:

EXCERPT:
“I have several things to add to the next meeting’s agenda and I think you should take some notes, Mr. Ryan. You’ll find a notepad and pen in your desk drawer.”John swallowed hard, as his handsome face flushed. No one told him what to do like Justin did; they all just scurried around to do his bidding. But Justin didn’t scurry. When John turned toward the desk, obeying orders, Justin knew what he wanted. Justin came up behind him, pressing the length of his body against his boss’s, and whispered in his ear. “On your knees, Jonathan. You do all your best work when you kneel.”

Q & A with JJ Lore -New Planet Alpha Release - Forbidden

Welcome, J.J. Lore, to Written Butterfly!  Planet Alpha is a series near and dear to my heart because of my own wonderful experience of my own PA book so I'm thrilled to have her visit with me today!  I must say...that is one sexy cover!

Q) How did you dream up the dynamics of this new Planet Alpha book?
A) One of the premises of the Planet Alpha universe is that Alphans are proud warriors, so I followed that logic to wondering what would happen to men who’d been wounded and were no longer fit to serve in active duty. They’d probably be denied a lot of the privileges of rank, but still wish to serve their comrades. That’s where the characters of Deklan and Leontus originated; they are too scared to fight but work at a remote military hospital attending to injured Alpha warriors. That’s where they encounter Aura, a human woman who’s been kidnapped and hurt by Xyrans. They offer to care for her until she’s well enough to travel back to Earth, and in the interim, discover she’s their perfect match.

Q) Do you have any habits that get you in the writing frame of mind?
A)All I need to get in the writing frame of mind is to be in a quiet house with a cup of hot tea in hand, but being a stay-at-home mom of a seven year old boy, quiet is rarely a component of my day!

Q) What are your upcoming projects?
A)I’m about a third of the way through my next Planet Alpha manuscript, and have another sci-fi erotic romance in the daydreaming phase. I’m also polishing a sweeter sci-fi romance that will be published under another pen name. I love to write and have so many ideas. Someday I’ll have enough time to get them all down.

ForbiddenBy J. J. LoreBlurb:Working to heal wounded Alphan warriors is the new duty of bondmates Leo and Deklan. Although recovered from severe injuries received on the field of battle, they are no longer fit to fight. Their orderly, all-male existence is turned upside down when an injured human female becomes their new responsibility.
Aura Tremain wakes up in an alien hospital, healing from a beating delivered by the scaly Xyrans who’d kidnapped her. Upon her discharge, two handsome Alphan men offer her refuge until she’s well enough to travel.
Even though Leo and Deklan know they will never be permitted to bond with Aura as their souls demand, they can’t ignore the desire she stirs in them. Her time with them is short, but so intense. Will the intimacies they share be strong enough to withstand the expectation that bondmates are for battle-worthy warriors? Can their passion bind the three of them forever?
Excerpt:

It was strange to wake up in a bed with an alien male, no, two alien males, she amended. She glanced over to see Leo was still asleep, sprawled on his belly, his head cradled on his bent arm. Lots of thick muscles under gleaming skin on display. They both looked so strong. She turned her head back to Deklan and jumped with surprise to find him watching her with half-closed, sleepy eyes.“Sleep well?” he whispered. She nodded. Deklan’s eyes crinkled at the corners. He inhaled and stretched his arms over his head with a sigh, inadvertently dislodging the sheet even further down his body. He was wearing dark pants so there wasn’t much more she could see, not that she should be looking any further. She couldn’t quite take her eyes off him, though. As he lowered his arms, the one closest to her nudged along her shoulder and coasted down her arm, his large hand finally coming to rest next to hers.  He edged closer and watched her for a moment. She could feel the heat of his body.“Do I look very different?”“Different than what?” Aura whispered back, unwilling to disturb Leo when he’d been so kind to her.“A human male. I’ve never seen one in the flesh nor seen a human female until the ship landed.”“You look different. Bigger, stronger. Your skin is…” She trailed off, not quite sure how to put her newfound affinity for gold.“Is what?” Deklan rubbed his hand along his chest, bumping over swells of muscle, disturbing the fine black hairs tapering down his abdomen. His voice was rough, and the timbre of it vibrated some previously unknown part of her ear.“It’s beautiful.” Her honest assessment resulted in a disbelieving smile from the Alphan lounging next to her.“It serves its purpose. I’d never call it beautiful, especially compared to yours.” Deklan glanced at her face, then her shoulders and arms exposed by the borrowed tank she’d worn to sleep. She knew she was blushing since her face was so hot. In an effort to compose herself, she looked over at Leo to find he was still deeply asleep, unmoving from when she’d last seen him.A large hand sliding along her arm brought her attention back to Deklan to find he’d edged closer and turned so he was curving against her now. Maybe he was just affectionate in the morning, maybe—The sudden press of a hard cock against her hip made her shiver. At least, she assumed the hard, warm shaft she could feel through her thin clothing was a cock. Deklan was alien, so perhaps his equipment was different. Although why he’d be aroused in proximity to her was a mystery. Perhaps he was similar to a man and this was just the usual morning reaction.“Your skin is so smooth and soft,” he murmured as he ran his fingertips along her hip, then her belly, cloth bunching up under his fingers, exposing some skin at her waist. The slight parting of fabric made her shiver, made warmth spike into heat along her nerves. “Not frightened?”“No,” she whispered, caught up in the intensity of his gaze, the sheer sensual pleasure of having someone touch her.

Welcome Jessica Coulter Smith!

Hello, Jessica!  Thank you so much for visiting Written Butterfly!  I absolutely adore your cover for "Witch Way to Love"!

When Breena McCall goes to find her wayward wand, the last thing she expects to find is the man destined to be hers. Instant attraction only goes so far, especially when her chosen one acts like someone pissed in his kibble.
Wolf Shifter Cade Milcom doesn’t understand the sudden urge to bend the witch over and take her every way imaginable. She’s sassy, sarcastic, and gets on his nerves from the beginning. And yet, he finds himself answering the distress call when she gets herself into trouble.
An accidental mating and a demon bent on blackmail make for an interesting few days, but it’s nothing Breena can’t handle. Maybe.

How did Witch Way to Love come about?                    Believe it or not, it started from a flash fiction challenge. Well, the general idea behind the opening scene did anyway. I’ve actually wanted to write a sassy witch for a while and Breena just sort of blossomed in my head overnight. I started the story about a year ago, but all of the pieces wouldn’t come together. I’d get an idea, but I would run into a dead end and have to start over. Then one night, it sort of came to me in a moment of clarity. I sat down and started writing, writing like a woman possessed – and perhaps I was. Four days later, it was finished.
EXCERPT
Lightning skittered across the sky, the brilliant flashes lighting up everything around her. Thunder boomed overhead, shaking the earth beneath her feet. The high-powered winds whipped her long, red hair around her head and made her fight for purchase on the pavement. It was a bad night out, for witches and mortals alike. If only she hadn’t lost her damn wand! What was a witch without her wand? Damn near mortal, that’s what. The heavens were going to open up at any moment and she would be drenched. Taking a witch’s wand was as good as stealing her powers. No, she didn’t need the wand to create magick, but if it wasn’t in her possession, her powers sort of…fizzled and died out.Her high-heeled sandals were a poor choice of footwear at the moment, as she tottered down the sidewalk, following the beacon of light in the distance. She’d cast a locator spell in hopes of finding her wayward wand. She wasn’t certain if it had been appropriated by someone, or had merely wandered off, kind of like her broom had done the month before. Anyone who thought a wand was an inanimate object was a fool. It had a life force of its own. Otherwise, it would just be a piece of wood with pretty carvings. The beam of light shooting into the sky started to flicker, and she worried it would sputter out completely. She could tell it was in the area the residents of Mayfair Heights called “the jungle.” Only shape-shifters lived in that part of town. Despite the ominous clouds in the sky, she knew there was a full moon tonight. She just had to hope whoever had taken the wand, or the lucky person her wand had chosen as its guardian, was in residence. It would be just her luck that the furball would be out on a run, even if the weather did leave a lot to be desired. With the wind buffeting her small body, she felt like she was fighting an uphill battle, and wondered if she’d ever reach her destination. If her powers weren’t on the fritz, she could just translocate to wherever she needed to go. But, of course, on the worst night they’d had in months, she was stuck traveling on foot. She couldn’t even use her broom until she was at full power again. The damn thing refused to work. She completely blamed the tree sprite, the one who had gifted her with the branch used to carve the broom handle. It had obviously imbued some of its stubbornness into her broom.Breena rounded another corner and sighed in relief. The home she sought was half a block away and lit up like the fourth of July, thanks to her little spell. She thanked the goddess that it had worked so well, or at all, for that matter. She couldn’t imagine having to find her wand the old-fashioned way, or having to hire someone else to cast the spell for her. How embarrassing! It was bad enough that things like this kept happening to her, but if the spell-casters guild caught wind of it, they’d pull her license to practice for sure.As she neared the home, she took in the little details, like the gargoyles standing guard at the edges of the roof. She had no doubt they were the real thing and gave them a little wave. The red door stood out in stark contrast against the gray and black home, beckoning her closer. She stepped under the portico just as the rain began to beat down, a deluge really, and she thanked the goddess she hadn’t been standing out in the open just then. She lifted her fist and knocked on the door, listening for any sounds of life within. No answer. She banged again, this time a little harder. The light from her spell spluttered and blinked out, leaving her standing in the dark. The fact that there were no lights on in the home, nor on the porch, told her that her query was probably out running wild, but she refused to give up.Breena’s tiny fist pounded on the door for the third time. Grumbling under her breath, she gave the wood a good, hard kick, wincing as her toes met the unforgiving surface. She had just turned, and was about to leave, when the door flew open.“Do you have any idea what time it is?” growled a deep voice, a voice that zinged through her and made all of her lady parts take notice. She spun around with a snappy retort on the tip of her tongue, but it died the moment she was faced with six-foot-six of yummy goodness. A button-down shirt hung open, leaving his scrumptious muscular chest in full view. Her gaze dipped down over six pack abs and she licked her lips, wanting to run her tongue over each and every inch of him.“I’m, uh, looking for my wand,” she stuttered lamely, her brain having been fried by his hotness. He smirked. “Oh, I have a wand for you all right, but I don’t think it’s the one you came looking for.”
