Coming of Age
I remember exactly when I stopped being a tomboy.
I was with my pack of goofy guy friends and we were galumphing through an obstacle course at a big athletic park: large walls to vault over, climbing walls to scamper up and jump down, disjointed balance beams snaking through imaginary crocodiles, that sort of thing. One of the challenges was to have two people start at either end of a large drainpipe and shoot past each other in the middle, emerging at opposite ends in record time. When it wa...

My First Literary Crush
Two words: Peter Pan.

Peter Pan: When all the other girls want his attention, too, who am I to resist?
Peter Pan was my first die-hard literary crush who I found tucked beneath my comforter and two fluffy pillows, with my reading lamp on all night. He was mischievous, daring, a little bit clever, a little but naughty, a little bit sexy in that first-heart-flutter kind of way; a curious mix of devil-may-care confidence and wide-eyed innocence, wearing his heart on his sleeve for all to see. He w...

Shout Outs for the Delightfully Insane!
Okay, since I haven't much to say today, I'd thought I'd give a shout-out to the incredible antics of Victoria Schwab and the YA REBELS (which, in the interest of full disclosure, qualifies me for a contest drawing to win a copy of Rachel Hawkins' debut novel, HEX HALL! Bonus!)
Isn't she amazing?!?
Watch the video. Pass it on. Click the links. Enter the contest and/or buy the book! GO!

Talk To Me: It's All In The Voice
I rarely listen to audio books, usually only when I'm taking a long trip by car, but one thing I think makes or breaks a recorded rendition is the voice; how the sound of it speaks to me and wears the words. Maybe it's me – I'm a sucker for liquid accents like Hungarian and Kiwi, the rich baritones and bases of James Earl Jones or Patrick Stewart, or the amazing character tucked in Jim Dale's genius or the cast of The Prairie Home Companion. I'd say this is doubly true of writing: when the vo...

Steam(Punk)y, Paranormal Romance
I know that I've been making my way through the pile of books that I got from ALA, but I had to set it all aside when I got the chance to read this:

I've been *waiting* to see what SOULLESS was all about. With the byline being, "A novel of vampires, werewolves and parasols" combined with a mechanized contraption in her hand and fancy goggles on her hat, I thought this might be up my alley. Reading Gail Carriger's author blurb sold me on the book.

Little Black Dress
My brother is getting married this spring! YAY! My gorgeous new sister-in-law-to-be took pity on we bridesmaid-type-ladies and said that our roles are to hold some pretty flowers – in this case, calla lilies – and wear a black dress. "Great!" thought I, "I have a black dress. Hooray! No shopping! Done deal." (In case you didn't know, I loathe shopping.) I sat back and waited for the rest of the wedding kerfluffle to begin.
Well, I recently discovered this weekend that what my gorgeous new sist...

Not Quite A Valentine
Love. Everyone's minds are on hearts and red roses and chocolate (although when are people *not* thinking about chocolate, right?): Valentine's Day approacheth. And while I'm a deeply romantic person, I am also about the "shivery-delicious" aspect of love, the tinge of bittersweet, the chili fire of something a little darker.
