I interview Me

The R.K. Finnell Interview

The Questions I'd Ask Myself

Q-I've heard you say you hate fantasy, but you write it.

A-I do hate fantasy that is full of the usual dragons, damsels in distress, and the often borrowed Tolkien fantasy characters. They have been done and overdone to the point of boredom-at least for me. A writer can combine the elements of different fantasy creatures to come up with something new and different. You are only limited by how far you let your imagination go.

Q-Most of your main characters are young males. Will you ever have a female lead?

A-No and don't ask again.

Q-Which character do you think would surprise your readers the most if they met him on the street?

A-Martin O'Grady. I wrote him to sound as if he were an old drunk, but in actuality he's young (about 25-30 years old) with an old soul. He's heart-broken and turned to drink when his beloved wife died.

Q-In Kickshaw Candies you had three unsavory human characters come into the town. What was their purpose in the story?

A-Colleen was hungry.

Q-Concerning the Siog what do you mean when you say “what happens to one, happens to all” ?

A-If a Siog is born with an anomaly such as having an extra toe then all the rest will be born with an extra toe until another birth changes it.

Q-How would it be possible to change such a thing?

A-By going outside of the clan, particularly with something that isn't another Siog.

Q-Kickshaw Candies is plot driven. Was this on purpose?

A-Not really. The plot was more important than the characters.

Q-With so many characters how do you keep them all straight and not get confused?

A-Each is parked in its own special place in my imagination. I did buy 3x5 cards with the idea I would fill each one out with a character's biography. The cards are still blank.

Q-What advice do you have for aspiring...

A-Shut up.

Q-Well that was mean! What do you have against aspiring writers?

A-Nothing. Part of being a writer is learning how to research. Someone wants to know about writing-research. Not only are they gaining knowledge, they are also learning how to find what they need. Besides, the sooner they realize writing is not the walk in the park they thought it would be, the better.

Q-And finally describe where you write.

A-In an often noisy kitchen with cats staring at me.

Q-Thank you R.K for allowing me to interview you. Any last comments?

A-Damn it cat, get off the counter!
