Spiritual vs Religious? 16 ways to know for sure…
There was another post on CNN this morning attempting to understand those identifying themselves as “spiritual” rather than purely “religious”. I always find it fascinating when people criticize what they don’t understand. There will always be naysayers, particularly when some come from an ingrained ideology that makes it challenging to imagine life any other way.
To be clear, there is NOTHING wrong with religion – in fact religion has many beautiful qualities. It has given much to our communities, and has a perfect place within this world. Businesses, institutions, and organizations who use religion to focus on a common goal have made tremendous positive impacts in our world – but religion is not the delimiter – only a common thread around our desire to serve and to find happiness in life. In order for religion to be of value in our lives it needs to be in alignment with who we are.
In light of that, I thought I would provide the ultimate test to determine if you are more SPIRITUAL than RELIGIOUS.

16 ways to know if you are more “spiritual” than “religious”:
If your idea of a perfect Sunday morning is to commune with nature, be artistic, take a bike ride, or have brunch with your family instead of going to church or another place of worship.
If you can connect/pray/commune with God, spirit, or your inner truth wherever you are, no matter what you are doing. Basically – you don’t need to GO to any particular location – you can find spirituality wherever you are.
If you believe in a higher power, but don’t always know how to classify or explain it.
If you choose to follow your inner truth, regardless of the beliefs handed to you by others. If you look INSIDE for the answers in your life, instead of outside of yourself or by the direction given by others.
If your involvement in your religious community is as much out of a desire to be with family and community.
If you read a book of worship (whether it’s the Bible, Talmud, or Koran) and you come across phrases or statements you cannot fully support, or are clearly from another century and don’t apply to our current day and age.
If you think many of the rules your religion puts forth are silly, either because they are antiquated or lack validity.
If there is not just ONE book that provides all of your answers, but MANY sources of wisdom and guidance for your life.
If you believe that we are all in this together, and that we create this world together.
If you believe fully in tolerance and acceptance, and don’t support discrimination, judgment, or superiority in any form or fashion.
If you accept that your life exists in the present moment, and you give little credence to promises of something in the afterlife.
If you believe that happiness is most important, that finding fulfillment and being of service is part of your path to happiness.
If you don’t believe in “repenting” for your sins – because you don’t believe they are sins. Sure you may have made mistakes, and you can apologize, but your choice to live in the magnificence of the moment supersedes any desire to relive the pain of the past.
You understand that nobody can truly forgive you – only you can forgive yourself.
If you KNOW that you are first in command – not second. Your life is not dictated by someone/something outside of you. You are in charge of your life, your destiny, and everything that happens in between.
Lastly, if you choose not to blindly follow anything or anyone. You decide what to think and what to believe. If you KNOW that your destiny is determined by the choices you make in any given moment.
If you said YES to most if not ALL of the questions above – then there is a VERY good chance that you are more spiritual than religious. But again, that doesn’t mean you need to throw away your religion – just be clear about the role it plays in your life. Just because you don’t have a specific place of worship, or a hierarchy of people who guide your beliefs, doesn’t mean that you lack in faith, or are limited in your mindset. The simple fact that we find happiness and fulfillment from the inside out – wherever we are – allows us to find happiness in any given moment, no matter where we are, and no matter what we are doing.

Don’t let yourself be judged by those who think you should be living another way. You may not be able to describe and put a name on your faith in a higher power or a universal energy. You may not have a “word” to describe all of your beliefs, but that doesn’t reduce the power of your beliefs, nor your understanding that you are here for a reason, and that you are constantly guided.
If you want to be involved in religion, then allow it to be a support structure in your life…a positive contributor to your dreams and desires. Be engaged, but follow your inner guidance for what you believe. Be religious…don’t be religious…it really doesn’t matter.
Most importantly – follow your heart, your truth, your dreams, and above all – just be happy.
Until next time, Many Blessings,
Seth

Sasquatch Lives, a Life of Mysterious Awakenings
On a recent trip to Ketchikan, Alaska, my attention was drawn to the following sign. Clearly I am not an award-winning photographer, and even less so on a bus driving 40MPH. Make of it what you like, but it was actually a Sasquatch crossing sign. Clearly the Alaska DOT (department of transportation) affixed the sign in order to warn residents and visitors of the potential peril of the effervescent Sasquatch, who run rampant and unchecked in the Alaskan tundra. Obviously they have had problems with drivers becoming distracted or endangered when the Alaskan Sasquatch crosses the road, casuing drivers to become temporarily impaired . Who knew that the Sasquatch posed such a threat to innocent passers by?
Perhaps it’s a warning sign of the unknown, of our conceptual reality coming true. We search the planet for this mysterious Sasquatch, with little to show for our quest, yet we know it’s not the end result that matters in the slightest. It is the quest to find something unique, rare, to make a name for ourselves, or to use an outside event as an attempt to find meaning in our life. Either way, that Sasquatch in many ways represents the unknown in our life, the answers we seek but cannot find. We spend our lives looking for something we are adamant exists – clearly focusing on something outside of ourselves at the sacrifice of what matters from within.
The Sasquatch in this regard is a representation of all that we hold dear within our minds, yet cannot find or locate.
We are all looking for something that cannot be found. We want answers to questions that cannot be provided, that can only be discovered. The reality of our existence is a function of the meaning we obtain in any given moment, a function of the direction we choose to head, based on the lives we choose to live. The only real constant is change, physical death, and the fact that we ARE the ones who get to choose. We decide the true magnificence of our existence, or alternatively choose to spend our lives looking for something that doesn’t exist, thereby missing out on the greatest opportunity we have in our lives – the opportunity to find value, meaning and purpose in this moment, and in every present moment.
Embrace your inner Sasquatch, but not to the point that you sacrifice what is most important in this life. Be willing to let go of your attachment to a future that is unreachable or even non-existent, for the potential that exists in every moment to find happiness, to be of service, and to live the life you were destined to live.
Many blessings!
Seth

Creating the Space for Greatness, for what you desire – L8
When you have identified the disparity between where you are and where you want to be, you have the ability to affect change you in your life. The first step is to increase your awareness, and beyond that it is to be clear about what you desire in every part of your life.
Following your truth requires a willingness to let go of anything and everything that isn’t working in your life. Remember, nobody controls our life – we control our life. We cannot blame others for our lack of fulfillment in relationship, business, spirituality, or anywhere else. We are the captain of our ship, we are in control of our destiny.

Physical Health, Emotional Well-being, Your Body as a Vessel For Greatness – L31 – Video Transcript
Hi, this is Seth David Chernoff, award-winning author of the Manual for Living.
Today, I’d like to talk to you about the physical body – and how it either helps us or gets in a way of accessing happiness and fulfillment. You see the physical body is only a representation of who we’re being in this life…it’s a vessel or a vehicle if you will, to get from where we are to where want to be. So if you have dreams, desires, things that you want to achieve in this life, you naturally need your body to help you get there.
So, why do we disregard our physical body? So many people smoke, they’re overweight, they don’t exercise, they don’t take care of themselves. And it’s not that we don’t know – we know how to take care of ourselves. We know we should eat right – maybe organic natural foods, We know we should exercise – maybe take a walk, swim, take a bike ride. We know we should get a good night sleep, not smoke, don’t drink too much soda, drink lots of water. We know the things that we should do but that doesn’t mean that we do it.
But you see, I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the physical body with respect to finding happiness in life. You can’t really find happiness if you’re not taking care of your body. If you’re unhealthy, if you’re unwell – you’ll never really going to be happy. You can invest in all your relationships, you can invest in your business, you can make money, it doesn’t matter what it is…but if you’re sick, if you’re in physical pain, you’ll never be fully happy in life.
There are so many choices now that didn’t exist before. I remember when I was growing up my parents were all into organic natural foods. And that was before they put flavor in it, it tasted so bad. Now there are so many things to choose from, it’s so easy to eat organic foods, gluten-free diets, it doesn’t matter what it is…there are so many things to choose from that didn’t exist 20, 30, 40 years ago. So, I invite you to make different choices in your life. If you really have dreams and desires, if you want to be there for your kids, grand-kids – you have to take care of your physical body.
If you have things that you want to do and we all have things that we want to do. You see, we’re all here for a very unique purpose…we’re all here for a reason, it’s not just a fluke, it’s not happenstance. You have a very unique path in this life. And so if you want to really achieve that, if you want to fulfill your dreams, desires, find happiness and fulfillment…you have to take care of your physical body. You can’t destruct yourself by self medicating all the time. You’re going to experience physical pain, but you just have to make sure you are doing everything you possibly can to take care of this physical body so that it can take care of you.
It’s really not that hard, it’s not that hard to make different choices. But it means you have to let go of the patterns you’ve created, of the choices that you’ve made. You see if you’re not happy in your physical body, it’s a direct reflection of the choices you’ve made throughout your life. That’s all. It just needs a different choice for the future…if you want something different in this part of your life, it means choosing something different. That’s all. We can all find happiness and fulfillment but we have to take care of our vessel, this vehicle to get from where we are to where we want to be.
There are so many parts of your life that you take care of. Your automobile – well it needs an oil change, tires rotated, maybe some maintenance. Your home – naturally needs maintenance on the HVAC system, maybe a paint job. But in the physical body, maybe we get a dental checkup once or twice a year, we have our teeth cleaned, maybe we have our eyes checked, but we don’t often take care of our physical body and I implore you to do so. If you really want happiness and fulfillment, you’ll get so much more out of exercise than just happiness – being able to think more clearly, moving energy to your body, releasing the toxins from your body, there’re so many benefits to taking care of yourself, I can’t even list them all here. And there are so many experts far greater than I that can help you get to that place but I just implore you to do so, because if you really want to be happy in life you have to take care of your physical body.
I hope you found this video helpful in your journey towards happiness and fulfillment, and until next time…many blessings!

Time Enough, Effective Time Management & Prioritization – L2 - VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Hi, this is Seth David Chernoff, award-winning author of the Manual for Living.
Today, I’d like to talk to you about time – our most precious commodity. The delineator between a life well lived and the alternative. You see, in any given moment we have a choice about how we are going to live our life. For those of you that have faced traumatic illness, who have lost or faced the loss of a love one, you realize how precious time is. Sure we’ve all been told since the beginning of our life, life is short…life is precious. But you actually face and reconcile with death in your own life, you don’t really comprehend how precious it really is. So for me, going through illness the way I did, I’ve never had the perspective of the way I make decisions around the moment that I do now.
You see, in any moment we have a million choices that we make. The things that we are going to do, the things that we are not going to do, who are we going to spend time with, what we are going to work on. We all have a huge task list, and many things on our task list don’t really make us happy. They are not about service, they are not about contribution. They are things that we feel we have to do or are obligated to do. But you see, if you realize that life is short…if you accept the premise that we only have a limited amount of time in this life to find happiness, to be of service, to get fulfillment in any way possible, then you realize in any given moment the choices we make directly impact our overall well-being and happiness.
There’s a phrase called ‘Opportunity Cost’ in Economics, and it simply means that in any given choice that you make there’s an opportunity cost or an opportunity lost. So, in any given choice that you make you’re actually choosing not to do something else. And in choosing something over something else, you sacrifice. You let go of one thing over another thing. And so in our life, whatever choice we make we’re sacrificing an alternative choice. And so in any moment, you have the opportunity to choose. That the choice that you’re making really is related to you happiness, it really is related to your fulfillment in life.
Sometimes we’re in such a hurry, we felt like we have so much to do and so little time to do it in. Have you ever said to somebody, ‘Gosh, I’d love to do that but I just don’t have time.’ Well, we know that’s not true. If you’re here in this given moment, of course you have time. When I do yoga at the end of class the instructor will often say to us, ‘If you have the luxury of time, you’re welcome to stay in Shavasana a little bit longer’. And I always chuckle because I think to myself, well, we all have the luxury of time, we just spend our time in the wrong things. We all have the opportunity to choose anything we want in any given moment. And yet we’re often in such a rush and in such a hurry that we disregard the real opportunity that happens in any given moment.
If you are not happy, tomorrow is not going to make you any happier. Now is the only time that you can choose something different for yourself. We all have the luxury of time. And that really is what we do with it. What opportunity we put before ourselves in order to find happiness, fulfillment, and to be of service? So, I invite you to be conscious of every moment in your day, to be conscious of the choices that you’re making. Because remember, there’s an opportunity that you’re choosing in any given moment, there’s an opportunity cost with every decision that you make. So, choose the thing that makes a difference, choose the thing that makes you happy, that makes you fulfilled, that contributes to those around you. That’s the opportunity to find happiness in this moment. Remember, it’s not one big thing that makes happiness. It’s the choices we make in any given moment. And in this moment I invite you to choose something better for yourself.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this video…until next time…many blessings!
