The Next Big Thing

I was tagged by Dawn Colclasure. After you check out my next big thing, go check out her Next Big Thing! The rules of the blog hop are simple: Answer ten questions about your WIP (Work in Progress) and tag five more writers/bloggers to do the same. A chain of links will lead you, dear reader, to a forest of wonderful writers all busy creating new books just for you… or so I'm

Quietly Creeping Back

I hear echoes throughout my blog as I type, whispers of “Is it her or did someone hijack it?” What a long and short summer it was: long due to constant activity and short due to constant activity. I’ve been wearing a sweatshirt and slippers around the house for a couple of weeks now, since it leapt into fall, far before I was ready. I want 80+ degrees again already, not frost

Middle of the road with Middlemarch

There must be something wrong with me. I read such glowing reviews of Middlemarch, a classic for pete's sake!, that I finally got around to giving it a try.

I'm about a third of the way through ... and I'm skimming. Yikes. Why do I want to know all of those little medical details and such? I don't. It doesn't advance the plot. It doesn't actually teach me anything I consider useful. It's only muddling the story.

Now I love lit fic. I do. The Count of Monte Cristo is exceptional. Shakespeare. Dreiser. I have no trouble with Dreiser. Middlemarch is putting me to sleep at night. That's not normal for me.

A reviewer said it had more action than all three Pirates movies. Hm. Where? Later in the book? Can I make myself get that far?

It's SLOOOOOW! And I usually don't mind slow. But I do want something to make slow be worth it.

I hate to add this to my very small "abandoned" list, but unless I find a good reason, I might have to do that.

Anyone have a good reason?

Interview with Goodreads author Kathleen Valentine

I recently read The Old Mermaid's Tale and fell in love with it. Not content to just read it and move along, I contacted Kathleen Valentine for a possible interview. She was kind enough to offer her time.

It's up on my indie arts blog:

Highly recommended read!

The Art of Designing Book Covers

I'm at author Thomas Wilson's blog today talking about book cover design. I'm art and design trained and although my main career is as a novelist, I can't help keeping my fingers in art.

Stop by and find a few tips for indie and small press authors who need their own book designs created.

designs and updates

New Year, New Design

Okay, I don't redesign my site every year. It takes an inordinate amount of time (for an amateur, anyway) and I have enough trouble keeping up with the sporadic "what's new" updates. But I ordered a new set of business cards and related promo material and I just love the look of them. They're bright and cheery, with books and flowers and coffee and yellow! It hit me that it's the look I wanted for my site so everything will match.

I drew a few elements to echo the cards and changed the background colors. Of course the blog has to match the site, so that's done, also.

If you want to see:

I also finally added the site for my newest book and it turned out pretty striking, I think:

Moondrops & Thistles

I expect this design to last well over a year. Have to amortize that time, right? (oops, a slip into tax season)

How many of you authors redesign often? Or do you set it up and leave it? Readers, does a good site design matter?
