Ruthi Knight: My question to Imogen would be... How has your life changed since being published? Is it everything you thought it would be? Or one of the many misconceptions about being a published author? I'm thinking about going the self-publishing route for my own work and I would love a real view on what it's like to be published. :) Btw, HUGE FAN!!! Just finished Integration and absolutely loved it!! Can't wait to see more of Cordelia and Jagger!!Imogen: Hi, Ruthie! This one made me stop and think a bit. I guess the way publishing my books has most changed me is that I’ve turned into a businesswoman, which is something I never aimed to be. Indie publishing (for me) is 10% writing and 90% marketing. It's been quite a challenge, but a fun one. I have met so many amazing people along the way. So although writing itself is a lonely endeavor, the rest of the publishing business has allowed me to meet, experience, and appreciate the people who help me make it all happen. All the best with your book. Let me know when you publish it!Ruthi: Thank you so much for your answer! I am now scared, but determined, lol. I am not a businesswoman either so that part is so very scary! But you're right about meeting so many amazing people! I've gotten to know a lot of Indie authors lately and I must say, they have all been so nice and helpful and just all around awesomeImogen! I couldn't have done it without help and inspiration from the authors on Kindleboards.Ruthi: When you write, do you listen to music? If so, what group/artist has been your biggest inspiration?Imogen: I tend not to listen to music while I write, but I do get inspired to write while I am listening to music. I will be posting my Integrationplaylist soon.
Carmel Beaudry: What do you do when you get writer's block?Imogen: The only time I experienced writers block was when I sat down to try to plan my latest book (Integration). It lasted a few minutes and was a frightening experience. It was as if all my characters suddenly went into hiding. I generally find it easy to just let them take over, which they always do, except for that one time.Carmel: What do you hope readers get out of your Bonfire Academy series?Imogen: I don't write stories with messages. There are no morals or other lessons to be had from them. I write to entertain.
Anne-Marie Monlezun: Which book is your favorite and why?Imogen: My latest book is always my favorite because I always stop at a point where I am desperate to start again. The characters are so strong in my imagination that I live and breathe them. Just a few days ago, I was shocked by what happens next for Cordelia and can’t wait to find out more. Having said that, I have a very special place in my heart for the Portal Chronicles, as that story is very close to me and who I am.Anne-Marie : What are you usually doing (as in daily activity) when you come up with the most story plots and twists? I mean, is there usually a situation or activity that stimulates your imagination more than others?Imogen: Yes... it’s either when I am in a semi-sleep, just about to get up in the mornings, or when I am in the shower.Anne-Marie: I know that your daughter Lauren is your greatest inspiration in your writing. Are there others that peak your creative juices?Imogen: I always giggle a little when I write the bit on my copyright page that claims that all resemblance to living characters is purely coincidental. Of course the resemblances are coincidental, but my characters are also HUGELY inspired by people around me who touch my imagination.Anne-Marie: So that one cartoon that says “Caution! Writer at work, anything you say or do may be written into my story” is really true?Imogen: Absolutely :DAnne-Marie: How much of your real life do you draw into when you write your stories?Imogen: Less and less with each story that I write. My first book has a lot of "me" in it. :)
Linda McKinney: So are you saying Olivia is you? (Character in the Portal Chronicles)Imogen: Huge bits of her are, as are pieces of Arizona, but just in book one. Olivia  is who I was after my mother died. It was a life-changing moment for me, one that made me yearn for a portal. Linda: I completely understand that!Imogen: After my mom's death, I constantly dreamed about people and situations in my past. And it all morphed into odd dreams that really only started to make sense when I wrote them down.Linda: Thank you for sharing this, Imogen. I know this must be a personal memory for you. :)Imogen: In a way, writing Portal was my personal therapy. It allowed me to analyze my life through a character, and it helped me make some hard but necessary real life decisions.Linda: Are you done with Fusion yet? (Portal Chronicles Book 5)Imogen: I’m working on it now. Cordelia is being a monkey and is still very dominant in my imagination, wanting me to get on and continue with her story. So I am occasionally forced to type little bits of Faustine 2 just so she'll leave me alone so I can get back into Arizona world. I am on schedule and will have it done this Christmas.
Allirea Hartless Brumley: Name your favorite minor character in Integration. :)Imogen: I can't remember any minor characters from Integration. They are all major in my head.Allirea: Fine, then who is the most annoying character??? Rea is excluded!!!!Imogen: The most annoying? Hmm… I’d have to say Frau Smelt. And that’s because she is so very mysterious and has not revealed herself to me yet. I find some of her actions hard to understand, but I’m sure there are reasons behind them. There must be. I don’t like waiting to find out, though. :D
Christina Baker Irelan: I was recently introduced to your work through blog tours. I have read Initiation and will be reading Integration this week! I am also working on my own novel. What advice do you have to offer about publishing?Imogen: A few years ago when Amazon made indie publishing available to everyone, a marketing revolution occurred within the publishing arena. It’s made the market fluid and in a state of constant flux. The changes are so frequent that what worked in terms of marketing an indie book a year ago may not work today. So my advice is to be completely flexible, try everything, and don’t burn any bridges. Keep up with what’s happening within the publishing industry by reading Publishers Weekly and the Passive Guy blog. Sometimes acting on information from these and similar sites will give you a leg-up as to what your next move should be. Treat it like a game of chess. Be prepared that perhaps only 10% of what you try will give you results, but when you see results, celebrate! As far as the book itself goes, I consider editing and a professional-looking cover as must-dos. Good luck with your book!Christina: Thank you!
Alli Potter: What has been your most challenging book to write?Imogen: So far, it’s been Integration. As you know, I don’t plan my stories, but I knew that I had to bridge the gap between Initiation and Faustine in this story. For the first time, I sat down to try to plan it, but gave up after a couple of minutes of my mind being totally blank. Then, I just started typing, not knowing if it was going to be at all doable. It basically wrote itself after that. I was hugely relieved!
Samantha Gray Elliott: how long does it take for a character to appear on a page? Like do you think/dream and immediately write about them or do they kinda hang out in your head until they are needed in a story? —Sorry that's kind of a weird question.Imogen : They simmer, I guess somewhat unconsciously, and then suddenly appear as I’m typing. It’s difficult to describe. I really just don’t know what happens from page to page, or who will appear.
Al Kunz: What kind of tree would you be?Imogen Rose: A broccoli tree.

An Interview with Professor Kunz

Professor Kunz, the head of the Integration program, agreed to let me interview him while he was in New York to attend a conference. I spotted him as soon as I walked into the lobby of the Times Square Hilton in Manhattan. It wasn’t hard; he’d sent me several of his books, all of them displaying his picture on the back cover. He looked even more impressive in real life—a distinguished, but slightly otherworldly, professor. After I introduced myself, we found a quiet corner in the Pinnacle Bar for our interview.
How long have you been at Bonfire Academy?This is my tenth year on the staff here at the academy.
Where did you train?It isn’t something many people here know, but I attended Bonfire Academy years ago. Many staff members were originally students. Most people are aware of the recent Academy graduates who come back as staff members or act as mentors during their enrichment year, but some of us old timers got our education here, too. Frau Schmelder and I were actually part of the same graduating class.
Are you a full warlock or a hybrid?You realize it’s considered bad form here to ask these kinds of questions. I hope this is just between us. Everyone knows I’m a warlock, but I’ve kept it quiet that I’m a hybrid of warlock and Sigma-Wanderer
I do know, but I thought I’d ask anyway :D I hope you will be okay with me sharing with your fans. Sigma-Wanderers are at Spencer’s beck and call. Are you called away often to carry out duties outside the Academy?He doesn’t call on me to travel much anymore. There are several younger Sigmas he uses, but he’ll call me out for situations that he’s worried they can’t handle, and we talk often. I probably wander over for dinner at least once every week or two at the Darleys’ home.
Very few Wanderers attend the Academy. Why do you think it was felt necessary to place you here?We have plenty of demons and witches on staff, and more trolls than we know what to do with. Although there have been very few Wanderers who have attended the academy previously, we’re expecting several Wanderers and Wanderer hybrids in the next several years. Spencer felt having someone who truly understood what it was to be a Wanderer on staff was a necessity.  He discussed it with Frau Schmelder, I wanted to return to “my roots,” and everything worked out.
How do your powers compare to Dr. Bern’s powers?Based on the powers we’re allowed to demonstrate at school, Dr. Bern is more powerful. I’m forbidden from using my Wanderer powers in such a way that they’ll be discovered by anyone here, and my warlock powers are slightly diluted by virtue of being a hybrid. Were that not the case, our powers would be close to equal, as we’re cousins. That’s something that very few at the academy know. In fact, both of us were born in Switzerland, in a little town called Diemtigen, around 150 kilometers west of here, near Berne, the capital of Switzerland. Her last name uses the German spelling of the city. Bern-with-an-e is the French spelling, also used by most English-speaking nations. I believe her paternal ancestors took their surname from the city name.
You approach Integration without taking emotions and natural instincts into consideration. In fact, you seemed slightly disparaging when suggesting that anyone in need of Dr. Phil-type support seek out Dr. Amour. Why is that?Dr. Amour and I have a history that, to be completely honest, has made me prone to showing my frustration with her when maybe I shouldn’t. I’ve never been entirely sure of the reason, but she attended the Academy for several years; I think four “enrichment” years, and multiple years of Initiation and Integration. She joined the staff immediately after she finally graduated. I’ve heard rumors that her paranormal powers are hard to control. What the truth is, I’m not sure. It was during her final enrichment year that we became involved. In my defense, she was much older than the typical student. I probably shouldn’t go into any details other than to say that Dr Amour’s “emotions and natural instincts” can be great—I sure thought so for a while—but they can get out of control. She sometimes encourages students under her care to do just the opposite of what we’re trying to overcome in their training.
Rumor has it that you may harbor special “feelings” for her. Is that true?Have you ever been attracted to someone you knew was bad for you? You try to resist, but the attraction is too much. I’ve done well recently, but I’m not sure how much longer I can last.
Integration was particularly challenging for two of your students—Faustine and Mason—this year. How do you think they will fare outside the Academy?I think Faustine is headed for big things. She’s still learning because she’s so young, but some day, I expect her to be an important leader in the paranormal community. In many ways, she’s mature well beyond her age. Mason is another story. Although a leader among the paranormals, his father has always been a bit of a loose cannon. Mason is a “chip off the old block.” I’m concerned he’s going to require some intervention or reining in, in the future.
What are your plans for the future?I hope to stay here at the Academy and settle down.

An Interview with Dr. Amour

I first spotted Dr. Amour on the Amazon forums when she was serializing one of her romance novels. I have been trying to get an interview ever since. However, she is loath to talk about her books, sometimes even pretending to be dead to avoid it. She has finally relented to an interview as long as I don’t mention the book. I met her for coffee in St Moritz. She arrived looking slightly stressed, but opened up after chugging down on five Espressos.

How long have you been at Bonfire Academy?I’ve been working at the Academy for going on three years now. It has been the most frustrating, challenging, and rewarding three years of my life.
Were you trained here at Bonfire Academy or somewhere else?I was brought in to the Bonfire Academy at the age of ten and was schooled and trained here. This is the only place I know as home.
What are the most frustrating aspects of your job?Administration. Professor Kunz can be especially difficult to work with. He doesn’t always play well with others.
Are you a full faery or a hybrid?I am a hybrid. I am three-quarters faery, but my grandfather was a Wanderer. I attribute my constant search for truth within each of us to him.
Which kind of paranormal seek your advice most often?I seem to attract the largest Troll audience. It may be because of their appearance or their general grumpiness; most of the other therapists tend to avoid them.
There has been a lot of talk about Rea and Noella this year. Have they been in to see you?No, they haven’t, but they should. Thank you for reminding me. I must make a note to have them come in. Rea has gained the reputation as a troublemaker. Noella seems more levelheaded, so hopefully I can reason with her.
Being a faery, do you find it difficult to council other types of paranormals?Not usually. I believe being a hybrid has something to do with it. We all have our strengths and weaknesses in being who we are. The trick is to find a common ground and work through it from there.
Do demons ever seek your advice? How do you protect yourself from their temper?Demons don’t come in very often to see me. They are already convinced that they know everything and find counseling to be a waste of time.
Do you think love has a place in the paranormal world or is it all about lust?I think love has a place in every world.
Professor Kunz was a bit disparaging when he described you as the paranormal “Dr. Phil.”  What do you have to say about that?What do you expect from a warlock? For someone who cries himself to sleep every night, he lacks compassion.
Is there a natural animosity between warlocks and faeries? I don’t believe so. There are bad seeds in every group, but I see real hope that one day, hopefully in my lifetime, we can all live in peace and harmony.
What are your plans for the future?Hopefully, the Academy continues to see my work here as helpful. I couldn’t imagine being any other place.

An Interview with Rea

It is very rare for Bonfire Academy to grant permission for someone to interview one of their students. However, I am a friend of the Stapple twins’ mother, and she obtained permission for me to interview Rea.
I met with Rea at my hotel in St. Moritz. When I opened the door to my suite after the first knock, there was no one outside. This went on a few times until I decided to leave the door ajar. She walked in minutes later, a large freckle on her nose glowing bright orange. I was taken aback. I had expected an unseemly creature, having the standard image of a troll imprinted in my head. But of course, she came in her human form–an impishly charming girl, her blond hair in dreadlocks, her bright green eyes sparkling mischievously.  Although I asked her to sit, she preferred to stand as we talked, skipping about the room looking through my closet and desk drawers. I ignored that until she slipped her hand into my Birkin and pocketed my wallet. She shrugged when I threw her a look, and hastily returned it. Thankfully, the remainder of the time, she just tried on some of my shoes and clomped about in them.
Rea, are you a full troll or hybrid?  My twin and I are hybrids.  We are part troll and part fabulous faery.  When it comes to mischief, we are definitely dominant troll.
Trolls are often changelings, swapped out for a human child. Did your parents place you with a human family?  Yes, they did, but it didn't last long!  Our human family loved us, but we were a handful!  It seems our human family didn't have all that much of a sense of humor.
Did the human family find out that you were trolls?They suspected something was up, but wondered if the sudden change in the personality of their kids had something to do with those injections human babies seem to need.
What happened to the human twins you were swapped with? Are they still alive?Very much alive and we are good friends now. They still live at our parents’ place. They assume they are trolls as well, but ones who aren’t able to do what normal trolls can.
Your twin, Noella, is very rarely sighted. Some even question her existence. Why is that?I am glad you asked that.  She does exist, believe me!  Noella is the youngest and the most spoiled.  We are identical twins except for a small freckle that Noella has on her nose.   We excelled at witchcraft classes, and she learned a chant to make her freckle disappear when she was caught doing naughty things.  Everybody always looked for that darn naughty freckle, and when it wasn't there, it was believed that *REA* did it!  I did try a chant to make a naughty freckle appear once when I was in trouble, but when the freckle glowed orange, I was busted! 
You seem to be in trouble at the school all the time. Have you even been forced to have sessions with Dr. Amour?Yes, I have, and it didn’t go well!  I thought we’d gotten away with it, but she hauled me up to her office the other day. She is OLD and can’t understand young, fun-loving, and adorable trolls!
How do you feel about demons?I love demons!  We are impossible to catch, so even though they scare most paranormals, the trolls actually torment them! I could do without the oozing puss though.  Bleh!
You’ve been particularly active in trying to annoy Pascal. Is that your way of getting his attention? Are you interested in him?He is a cute demon, and that is all I am saying!


With that, Rea disappeared though the door wearing my YSL Tribs. ☺

Lauren Rose Interviews Ella Darley

Hi I'm Lauren, Imogen's 11 year old daughter. It is "Bring your kid to work day" so I will be interviewing Ella! Here it goes! Ella is Arizona’s perfect little sister, you know, just like me! And has had a lot of strange things happening in her life, things she doesn’t even know, but here I'll be interviewing Ella, the little superstar from the Portal Chronicles! There are a few tiny spoilers, but not too many! Here she is! 
Lauren: Hi, Ella. I’m Lauren; I’m about the same age as you and I’ll be interviewing you today! So, it occurred to me that a lot of people see you as a brat! What do you think about that?
Ella: I think that’s mean! People shouldn’t be calling other people brats! I mean, I have feelings too! Well, I guess not everyone’s going to like me. So yeah. That’s not that nice.Lauren: Well, you defiantly don’t seem like a brat to me! ( snickers quietly) I agree! So, you have a new dog, Tallulah, do you miss Gertrude?Ella:  Yes I love little Tallulah!  I do miss Gertrude, she comes back to visit every once in a while, but I do miss her.Lauren: Gertrude is very cute I hear, and lazy! So, are you still in touch with Jonas and Sally?Ella: Yes, we hang out all the time; I have made some new friends, though.Lauren: So you must hang out with David and Kellan a lot! Do you like David or Kellan better?Ella: I like them both, I have to say Kellan is a bit more fun though, because he is horrible at Guitar Hero!Lauren: You must be good at Guitar hero! You go online shopping a lot, what stores do you shop at?Ella: I am the guitar hero champion! About the shopping, I love DELiA*s and Hollister!Lauren: DELIA*s is my fave! What was it like being kidnapped?Ella:  It was very dark, scary and frightening; I try to forget about it, though!Lauren: That must have been horrible! Who are your main friends at school?Ella: Well of course I love Jonas and Sally. But I made three other friends! Fallon, Dawn and Melanie!Lauren: So I bet you love sweet treats like I do! Do you prefer cake pops or crepes?Ella: Hmmmm that’s a hard question! I love both of them; except I know how to make cake pops because Arizona bought me a cake pop maker for my birthday!Lauren: If you could have one super power what would it be?Ella: Hmm I think I would either want to fly, or be able to go back in time!Lauren: Who is your favorite designer?Ella: HARAJUKU LOVERS x100000!Lauren: Haha all right than, I like them too! An Interview with David

Although David made a late appearance in Portal, I fell in love with him instantly. Much as I had totally committed myself to the Kellan-Arizona love story, David pulled at me. So when the story unfolded to allow David to segue into a love story of his own, I was beyond excited for him. This interview takes place four books into the story, so those of you who have not read those books, be warned. It may contain spoilers, though I will try my best to censor those. :)

Imogen: David, thanks for taking the time to answers some questions from your fans, and some from me. Can you start by telling us when you first found out that you were a Wanderer?

David: Thanks for having me! Actually, my story is different from most other Wanderers. My wandering abilities are very powerful, more so than even my mom's. Most Wanderers go through training before their powers are unleashed, but mine just seemed to appear on their own. I used to disappear from my crib when I was a baby, much to my parents' worry. But I always reappeared.

Imogen: Phew! And wow, that must have been awful for your parents! Where did you disappear to?

David: Nowhere in particular. I just liked the feeling of wandering. I never went far until I became a toddler, then I'd wander all over the place!

Imogen: Like where?

David: The zoo, candy stores, down to the fire station. I wanted to be a fireman when I grew up.

Imogen: That's too funny. I'm glad you survived your naughty early years! How did your parents cope?

David: They learned to trust that I was capable of looking after myself at a very young age.

Imogen: I bet they had to, or you would have driven them crazy with worry.

David (with that disarming smile of his): Yeah, maybe.

Imogen: How did you go from being a naughty toddler to a being Arizona's Wanderer?

David: It was partly because of my naughtiness. Mom decided that some of it stemmed from having too much time on my hands, so she tried to keep me busy. When the opportunity to work with the Darley family came up, she volunteered me for the job.

Imogen: So how old were you when you started?

David: Seven. It was just before Arizona was brought through the Portal. We were all living in the Stevens dimension then.

Imogen: David, how did you feel when Arizona hooked up with Kellan?

David: I was pissed off. It came out of nowhere. But once I had time to figure out what was going on, I was mostly really disappointed.

Imogen: Heartbroken?

(David nods.)

Imogen: What a rollercoaster it's been with Arizona so far. I have a few fan questions for you, which I will reword to avoid spoiling it for those who have not finished reading the latest books.

David: Awesome! Shoot!

Imogen: The first question is from Krystal Moore. She wants to know how you think the two girls will react if they meet?

David: I haven't a clue, but I'd hope it would be an "OMG, that's rad" moment.

Imogen: Krystal would also like to know, in a perfect world or worlds, would you prefer the girls and their lives stay separate?

David: I can't at the moment imagine the two worlds merging. It would be too weird. But who knows what will happen? Do you?

Imogen: Ha, ha No... not a clue! Here's a question from Alli Potter. Which Arizona did you truly fall in love with? Does the Arizona who chose Kellan make you jealous?

David: I love A. And to the other question... it did at first, but not anymore.

Imogen: My daughter, Lauren, wants to know whether you prefer macaroons or cupcakes?

David: Macaroons! The coconut ones.

Imogen: I had a final question from my friend Allirea Brumley, but I lost it. She probably wanted to know if you date faeries?

David: Unless A is a faery, no. Though I might make an exception for Allirea (awesome name). Just joking, A. Don't mallet me!

Imogen: Mallet?

David: Just a private joke. A can get a bit testy at times.

Imogen: I bet! Thanks, David. It was a pleasure to talk to you.

An Interview with Octavia

Octavia is the enrichment student at the Academy who represents Cordelia at the Student Council trial. Like all my characters, she was born in my imagination, this time inspired by my awesome friend and editor, Sue Bernstein, who is also a lawyer. During the editing process, something odd happened. Sue adopted Octavia into her own imagination, and Octavia seemed to become a manifestation of Sue's personality. It was a weird, but wonderful thing, and a total hoot. For the first time, my story had a character who seemed to have taken over a life of her own outside my own imagination. So it was only natural to ask Sue my questions for Octavia.
Where did you attend to law school?From the time I was a kid growing up in the mid-western US, I always wanted to live in New York. So I applied to only one law school - a prestigious school in Manhattan that shall remain nameless - and got in! I spent three blissful years in Manhattan before being turned.
When were you turned into a vampire? How old were you?That's a day I'll never forget - I was turned on graduation day. What began as the happiest day of my life, graduation from law school, ended with fangs in my neck and me undead forever. I was… am twenty-six years old.
I am guessing you were turned by someone eminent, hence you being sent here to the Academy. Are you able to share who that was?While I am not at liberty to divulge the name, suffice it to say that he was one of my law professors, who told me he had very big plans for me. No kidding big plans! When not teaching evening classes in New York, he teaches an introduction to paranormal jurisprudence class at Bonfire Academy.
What were the circumstances in which you were turned?The professor who turned me was my mentor. I trusted him and worked side-by-side with him for three years. At least he waited for me to graduate before he turned me but studying for the NY Bar Exam while trying to control my brand-new powers was a bit hairy!
What will you do once your time at the Academy is over?My mentor/professor/attacker still has big plans for me. Once my enrichment year is over, I am going to go into practice with him and will also teach part time at the Academy.
What do you think of Jagger?For a winter, that faery is definitely H-O-T!
How close to you feel to him after letting him drink your blood? Do you feel he belongs to you in any way?As trite as this sounds, faeries belong to no one. That said, however, Jagger and I have a very close bond. Mmmmm.
Do you like Cordelia?Like is such an odd word for a vampire to use. Cordelia was my client, and I respect her. You didn't think you'd pin down a lawyer, did you?
