It's Formerly/Finally FRIDAY!!

p1000109Woo-hoo!

Oh, you'd like to know what that is? Well, lemme tell you: It's a brand new weekly tradition in the grand tradition of traditions. Every week on Friday (unless I forget, but I'm going to write it on my  hand so I don't) I'm going to feature one of the fabulous Formerlies who sent in a pic of themselves declaring their Formerly and/or their Finally.

The first one is my friend Brenda, who doesn't care to dye her hair to match her little blond children, who are friends with my little...

Veronica's a betty

296758550_30c3a040851The fam and I went to a blowout all-day barbecue eatfest at my friend Kely's this past Sunday, and I got to hang out with some of her neighborhood friends, very cool women with whom I felt instantly comfortable. The air was thick with Formerly vibes, in part because we all roughly the same age, but also because, to a one, these women were outrageously at ease with themselves, as we Formerlies tend to be, thank God for that. It took us about 90 seconds (and not a little sangria) to splay it...

Dropping in!

CAROLYN WROTE: I am a former high-school drop-out. True story. I dropped out at 16 and then went back for one more awful semester at 17 before leaving school for good. I partied, I worked sporadically, then met and married a guy, and had two children.

Things didn't go as planned (do they ever?).

Two years ago, I became a single mom after my divorce, I realized I needed to get it together. After a few months of a mall job, I applied to college (I had earned my GED years ago).

I have since worked ...

Cool down

ANNEKE WROTE: So, I was at the gym and a very cute younger man approaches me. I was totally flattered until he said, "You're pretty hot… for your age." UGH! I learned he is 25 (I am 38). Quick calculations showed that I could've possibly been this kid's babysitter way back when. On the upside, when I was 20 something, I didn't know I was hot. I suppose now I do (since someone hot told me).

Dr. Feelbad

WENDY WROTE: I was at Urgent care this morning since I'd cut my finger pretty bad on a knife at home.  The doctor I saw was young…maybe 5 or 6 years older than my oldest son…. and very cute.  He pointed out 3 times that I was 40 and needed to be more careful and would probably need a tetanus shot more often than every 10 years,(and proceeded to give me one since I couldn't remember the last time I'd had one) oh and since I was 40 I wouldn't heal as fast as I would if I was 20. He even...

Formerly Hot on Oprah.com

Pretty cool and pretty nice of my friend Karen to mention FH! Go nuts with the tweeting!

Does Sexy Have a Size?#article_byline a { text-decoration:none; }By Karen SalmansohnIf you missed the new Lane Bryant commercial with the full-figured lingerie model confidently strutting the pluses of her plus-sized figure, it's not your fault. Some networks decided the spot was too sexy to air. Karen Salmansohn weighs in.In my opinion, the ban on this Lane Bryant spot is a big step forward for...

Sex and the City and Formerlies

2754716707_b34c6aaf25_mI haven't seen the movie (yet), but this bit in the New York Times (thumbs down) review of Sex and the City II had a bit that jumped out at me:

"If they seem less wonderful now, it isn't because of slackened effort or diminished charm on the part of the actresses who play them. It is that the movie itself, and perhaps the culture it stands in for, has lost interest and can't figure out what to do with them as they tiptoe toward middle age. "

Well, yes and no. I agree that the culture "can't...

Very psyched!

Hi, kids,

I'll be blogging a couple of times a month for Psychology Today on our favorite topic–check out my first post here. It's interesting and a little tricky because most of the other bloggers there have PhDs, which intimidates me, because at the very least they were smart enough to figure out how to pay for grad school. I never managed to do that.

I have, however, been offering unsolicited diagnoses straight out of the DSM since adolescence ("Mom, quit being so obsessive compulsive! The w...

Let's hear it for the boys!

Ip1000101n any major social movement that shines a white-hot spotlight on the issues facing women or minorities, sooner or later you'll hear cries of injustice from over near the boys' bathroom, to the effect of, "Hey, what about us? We're oppressed too!" So I'm not shocked that the Formerly Movement has sparked a wave of Formerly dudes wondering why their challenges upon realizing that they're OMG NOT YOUNG ANYMORE are not being met with the same outcry of sympathy and international aide.

Seriously,...
