SWANSEA HORROR CON – GUEST AUTHOR

And next July I’ll be here! I have never been to Swansea so am really looking forward to this. The last convention I did in Wales was the brilliant Scardiff in Cardiff. In Swansea, I’ll probably be launching the paperback edition of UNDER A WATCHFUL EYE, and will also bring my entire backlist, inc’ the Ritual Limited wares, for folks who want signed copies. Most of all I will be hanging out with horror folk.

LOST GIRL PUBLISHED IN CZECH

Even though there is no spear in LOST GIRL, or a character bristling with those weapons, the cover does suggest a vigilante. Most of all I’m delighted to have had one of my books translated into Czech. A first. I’m not sure if I have any Czech friends out there but Dobrovsky is the publisher and this edition is out now.

RELUCTANTLY FREAKY REVIEW “SOME WILL NOT SLEEP”

“A humble claim, I do declare. Because if my experience of Adam Nevill tales is anything to go by, rest  will be but a sweet and distant memory to you while your scared, dead tired body twitches with sleep-deprived hypersensitivity at every shadow and sound around you, your eyes bulge and strain in the dark and your terror prickles under your skin like electricity once you have tucked into this exquisite collection of horror appetizers.

Grotesque, eerie, nightmarish, cosmically terrifying… work your way through all the synonyms of the genre and it will just about cover what is on offer here. Some of the tales will remind you of his novels, but not in a rehashed way, but the way you’d greet old friends… friends who thought it funny to give you prank calls at 3am in a distorted voice, knowing you had just watched The Ring for the first time, friends who crawled down the stairs with their hair hung in their faces after you came home from the cinema to watch the Grudge, making gurgly noises at you. Friends you fondly recall, but frankly, at the time, you wanted to punch them in the face.

Ah, the joy of being scared out of your pants. Join our Dinner Party of Doom, and our butler Adam Nevill will be serving you these fine literary hors d’oeurvres with a cold, wicked, dead-eyed smile.”

SWNS – Double review from Gingernuts of Horror

And just when you’d hoped that I wouldn’t mention Some Will Not Sleep” again, two reviews from Gingernuts of Horror have landed – by Tony Jones and Kit Power respectively. I may have pirouetted on my hind legs. Thank you, gentlemen, and Gingernuts!

Here

“Overall, this is an absolutely first rate collection of stories, exhibiting all the hallmarks of Nevill’s storytelling talents – a genius for atmosphere, compelling sense of place, and a master of creating a creeping sense of dread. What this showcases that was new to me was a sheer breadth of authentic narrative voices, from the old West, to Japan, to the we-need-a-new-term-to-describe-it of Mother’s Milk. It’s rather like a collection of singles and B-Sides from a band whose concept albums you adore – same great storytelling, but across a wider palate and range of styles than you might have expected, leading to some delightfully unexpected visions and hellscapes.

Just a quick word on the physical book itself – I picked up the limited edition hardback at FCon, and I’d be remiss not to mention the superb quality of this book. It’s simply an exquisite item, and everything from the the inside cover art, slip case and even the feel of the paper stock scream quality. It’s a presentation that is worthy of the exceptional content, and should your budget stretch, I can fully recommend the hardback edition.

KIT POWER ”

“If you have any more than a passing interest in horror literature you will already be aware that Adam Nevill’s first collection of short stories ‘Some Will Not Sleep’ has been picking up universal acclaim from the world of horror, bloggers and early readers. After reading it I’m happy to say that this collection more than meets the hype, with eleven wonderfully crafted stories creeping into many different corners of the genre this author knows better than the back of his hand.  These short works represent a cross section of creations from two decades in writing horror. Some being influenced by the curveballs life throws at us, others crap jobs, horrible flats, and spells living abroad. My review is based on both the kindle version and the trade paperback, but many readers have already purchased the limited edition hardback from Adam’s website. It has a run of 400 copies with over 50% already sold, and if you follow Adam on Facebook you’ll know the hardback has gone down wonderfully well with the fans, coupled with the limited edition t-shirt with the black-metal ‘Ritual’ design. This doubles up as his company logo, as he has released the hardback version on his own book label and has even been posting them personally from the sunny south coast!

TONY JONES”

SOME WILL NOT SLEEP – FIRST REVIEWS

The first reviews from horror and genre websites and blogs have been a delight for me to read. Here are the first:

“Eleven wonderfully macabre tales that cover the whole gamut of the horrific. The supernatural rubs shoulders with the bizarre, body horror and psychological trauma walk hand in hand. What can else can I say, there is something here for every fan of dark fiction which ever flavour you prefer.” Pablo Cheesecake, The Eloquent Page [full review here]

“There are eleven stories in the book, eight of which are written in first person narrative, and each and every one is a cracker – here you’ll find monsters (including those of the human variety), ghosts, arcane rituals and some of the most disturbing imagery ever put on paper… Those familiar with Adam’s novels will also find here the seeds from which some of those epics grew.” Anthony Watson, Dark Musings [Full review here

“There is not one single tale which feels less than the others, none which seem to be mere ‘filler’. They are beautifully crafted, original and complete works which nevertheless fit well together as arranged by the author.” Paul Michaels, This is Horror [full review here]

” Verdict: A collection full of creeping dread. 9/10″ Marie O’Regan, SciFi Bulletin [full review here

“These are stories in which nothing is sacred, nothing is safe, and goodness me, if you like horror and weird fiction then you’re going to absolutely love every damn minute of them!  These short stories are long on terror. Chillingly good.” Sapient, Pop Mythology. [full review here]

“Some Will Not Sleep contains 11 short stories, 11 stories that takes you different times and places. 11 stories that will give you your fix of the macabre.” Yvonne Davies, Terror Tree [full review here]

“The variety of tone and setting make this horror anthology stand out. Whether it be the Lovecraftian slant on a haunted house theme, or the future dystopian vision of a resident’s home, nestled in a world cloaked with a chemically toxic atmosphere.” Tom Adams, Writing in Starlight [full review here]

“There is great variety on show with this collection, the stories contained within ‘Some will not Sleep’ are varied in both scope and tone, featuring intriguing plots, a lingering sense of dread and the constant feeling that something isn’t quite right. It isn’t often that I read a short story collection and enjoy every entry, but with this book I did.” The Grim Reader [full review here]

“his frights come along with puppets and creepy dolls, they are inflicted by an evil cult or demonic creatures, dreadful monsters who come in all forms and shapes. Frights to bear for SOME WILL NOT SLEEP, a book that exceeds 5 star rating, a remarkable feast of horror, weird and grotesque.” Diala El Atat, Blogging from Dubai [full review here]

My Baker’s Dozen of Favourite recent horror stories at The Quietus

It’s been a real hard task to get this list down to thirteen stories, and I’ve tried to reflect a range of voices, styles and approaches, but I would be deeply remiss if I didn’t include a list of notable publications and authors for further reading. As a good entry point into the scene, I highly recommend Ellen Datlow’s The Best Horror of the Year annual series, and Undertow Press’s Year’s Best Weird annual series. A subscription to Black Static is something you won’t regret either. For other good multi-author collections, I thought A Book of Horrors and Weirder Shadows Over Innsmouth, both edited by Stephen Jones were filled with treasures, as is Black Wings 1 edited by S.T Joshi.

Baker’s Dozen here

As well as the author’s in this Baker’s Dozen, I’d liked to have included something by all of the authors that follow, but thirteen is thirteen, and lists are a near impossible task and only intended here as an introduction and guide. Anyway, here goes:

Ted E. Grau (The Nameless Dark); Richard Gavin (Altar of Fear); V.H Leslie (Skein and Bone); Simon Strantzas (Burned Black Suns); Scott Nicolay (Ana Kai Tangata); Michael Griffin (The Lure of Devouring Light); Matthew Bartlett (Gateways to Abomination and Creeping Waves); Robert Shearman (Remember Why You Fear Me); Paul Meloy (Islington Crocodiles); Ray Cluley (Probably Monsters); Gary Fry (What They Find in the Woods), Gary McMahon (Where You Live), Dale Bailey (The End of the End of Everything); Christopher Slatsky (Alectryomancer and Other Weird Tales); and the work of Gemma Files, Alison Moore, John Howard, Stephen Volk, Mark Valentine, Tim Lebbon, Mark Morris, Daniel Mills, Brian Evenson, Mark Samuels, Justin Isis, Philip Fracassi, Paul Tremblay, S. P. Miskowski, Frank Tallis, Rhys Hughes, Livia Lewellyn, Rich Hawkins, Steve Rasnic Tem, Quentin Crisp … the list just goes on, while still limited by what I have read. But if this end of the horror spectrum rings your bell, it is also worth scouring the catalogues and signing up for the newsletters of PS Publishing, Undertow, Word Horde, Tartarus, Swan River Press, Egaeus, Dim Shores, Dunhams Manor Press, Hippocampus, Small Beer Press, and Coffee House Press, among others.

SOME WILL NOT SLEEP PRE-ORDERS

SOME WILL NOT SLEEP is officially published in just under two weeks. Folks on my mailing list, and those who came to the launch, have thus far accounted for just under half of the 400 limited edition print run in pre-sales, and in ten days of my opening the online store on my website too. I have done nothing from 9 am until 10 pm since then but pack and post books. I’ve even turned my office into a little factory unit and have just taken receipt of another large box of black metal tees. My wife and I have even done shifts on the coalface.

And it has been one of the most satisfying experiences I’ve had with books, in the 21 years that I have been professionally involved with them as an author, editor and publisher. To actually create the book, launch it, hand-pack each volume, watch a pile of fulfilled orders grow, and then take the parcels to the post office. It’s made my writing more tangible and discernible to me somehow, after using only my imagination, a PC, word documents and email file attachment for a couple of decades. All been hard work, but it has stroked my entrepreneurial streak in a way that conventional employment only ever thwarted and frustrated.

I’ve given the mailing list subscribers first dibs (and always will do for Ritual Limited publications and accessories) and I haven’t listed or promoted this hardback actively anywhere else yet, so if anyone on FB wants to order the hardback (and give me enough time to get orders out before the Xmas post), the door to my store is open, and I am going as fast as I can amidst clouds of steam, and a relentless soundtrack of fast music …

Massive two hoof salute to all who have taken a copy of SWNS, or a tee, so far! You keep me in here at night in the nicest possible way.

Order Some Will Not Sleep here.
