UNDER A WATCHFUL EYE – PAPERBACK EDITION COVER ARTWORK
I have the cover for the paperback edition of UNDER A WATCHFUL EYE, published this July.
Very different style for my novels, but I really like it and have never feared new directions. For me, the covers of both editions strike the right note for this story.
SOME WILL NOT SLEEP – THE AUDIO BOOK
Lie down and close your eyes (unless you’re driving). The audio book of SOME WILL NOT SLEEP is ready to pipe its selected horrors directly into your ears …
And that’s the fourth format for the collection; an uncanny quartet. Work continues on the astral projection edition.
Brought to you by Journalstone Publishing and read by David Stifel.
This edition is available here for the UK and here for North America.

OUTTAKES FROM BIRMINGHAM HORROR CON 2017
Massive goat bleats and snorts to all who swung by my table of terror at the Birmingham Horror Con to get books signed and to say hello. Much additional hoof clattering to all of you who picked up more of my papery terrors, and my Black Metal fabric horrors too!
Besides two brief canters to the “Gents” on my hind legs, I don’t think I moved from the table until around 5. Also great for me to see so many Ritual Limited shirts in the throng. A really good, colourful and well-run event too, I must say. Thanks for having me Birmingham Horror Con.
I was up at 6am and finally clocked-off at midnight after the evening event. Another very confirming day for me as a writer, which is down to meeting so many readers of my books and mates in this horror tribe – always makes it all so much more worthwhile.
Thanks also to the Brum Horror Group for inviting me to be their evening guest, and in the actual brewery, full of great vats of Two Towers Ale. Appreciate those who gave up their Saturday night to listen to me gibber.
I hardly had time to take my camera out so am recycling some pics here – thanks for taking them, folks. Huge thanks to indie publisher and writer maestro, Matt Shaw, for introducing me to this event!
May table the night before the event.
The welcoming party in the foyer at Edgbaston Cricket Ground
My neighbour in the hall, Matt Shaw.
Old friends, David Moody and Joseph De Lacey
Cannibal Row (pic Andrew Freudenberg)
With Pete of Dead Good Design and my brother, Simon.
I will also be appearing at Birmingham Halloween Special, same place, in October this year. Details here.

UNDER A WATCHFUL EYE REVIEWED IN THE GUARDIAN BY ERIC BROWN
Couldn’t be happier with this review for my new novel. Many many thanks to Eric Brown.
“Adam Nevill’s riveting ninth novel, Under a Watchful Eye (Pan, £12.99), ventures into the heartland of British horror so successfully charted by the likes of MR James and Arthur Machen. Horror writer Seb Logan is struggling with his latest novel when he becomes reacquainted with his old university friend Ewan Alexander, now a shambling down-and-out alcoholic who stalks and then moves in with Logan. Alexander is obsessed with the work of the horror writer and con man ML Hazzard, leader of a mystical cult investigating astral travel who, through Alexander, wishes Logan to do his bidding. Nevill charts Logan’s descent into the eldritch realm surrounding Hazzard and his cult with subtlety, drip-feeding doses of horror to great effect, ramping up the tension to an edge-of-the-seat denouement. You don’t read an Adam Nevill horror novel: you live it.”

THE RITUAL FILM ADAPTATION BY IMAGINARIUM & ENTERTAINMENT ONE
If you’d told the Adam that once sat crammed between a bed and a wall, at a tiny desk, where he wrote the first part of this novel, between the hours of ten pm and midnight, after 12 hour days working as an editor, that this would happen … If you’d told the Adam that finished this book on a borrowed laptop, at a kitchen table, and on various notepads, that this would happen … If you’d told him at any time during the two years it took him to finish this book that this would happen … If you’d told him when he walked all of those miles up and down mountains with Hugh Simmons, and listened to the rain hitting the tent, that this would happen … he’d have said, that would be great, but he would never have believed you. But IT has HAPPENED.
For me, this novel was a conscious tribute to the horror film, and an attempt to replicate parts of its effects in print. I wrote it for myself (my Dad and Hugh were the only potential readers back in 2008), and I wrote it without a deadline or a publisher. Two months shy of seven years after I completed the book, THE RITUAL is officially becoming a film.
It has been filmed. I was at the shoot in the mountains of Romania last year. It is now in post-production.
Rafe Spall is Luke.
Sam Troughton is Dom.
Arsher Ali is Phil.
Robert James-Collier is Dom.
David Bruckner directed. Joe Barton scripted.
Jonathan Cavendish, Richard Holmes, Will Tennant, Andy Serkis and Xavier Marchand are the producers in various capacities.
And I have been in awe at the talent and work of everyone involved in this project for a long time. Nice to be able to finally share that respect.
All news that comes my way, exclusives etc, will go in my newsletter (spam-free) first, where I can elaborate more. So if you are interested in where we go from here, sign-up at my website (and get a free book too).
Here is the first official press release:
“EXCLUSIVE: Andy Serkis serves as executive producer on Scandinavia-set horror tale.
Nick Meyer, Jonathan Kier and the sales team head to the EFM with the horror story starring Rafe Spall (pictured) of The BFG and J A Bayona’s upcoming Jurassic World sequel.
David Bruckner directs from a screenplay by Joe Barton, the Bafta-nominated writer of Our World War whose credits include Humans and who adapted Adam Nevill’s award-winning novel of the same name.
eOne fully finances and produces The Ritual and will distribute directly in the UK, Canada, Australia/New Zealand, Spain and Benelux, while Sierra/Affinity will introduce to buyers in the balance of international markets.
eOne will look to secure a US distributor during the EFM.
The story centres on four old university friends on a hiking trip in the Scandinavian wilderness following the death of their best friend.
When a wrong turn leads them into the ancient forests of Norse legend they encounter an evil force.
Jonathan Cavendish serves as a producer alongside Richard Holmes. Will Tennant oversees the project for The Imaginarium Studios and serves as an executive producer alongside Andy Serkis and Xavier Marchand, who oversaw production for eOne with executive vice-president of the global film group Lara Thompson.”

ELOQUENT PAGE REVIEWS ‘UNDER A WATCHFUL EYE’
From the Eloquent Page: “There is also a wonderfully Inception-esque vibe to this novel. Spiritualism, astral projection and alternate planes of existence are just the tip of the iceberg. The narrative has some mind-bending twists and turns . . . If that doesn’t pique your interest and melt your brain at the same time, I don’t know what will.”
We bow our horned head with thanks, Pablo.
NEW REVIEW FOR ‘UNDER A WATCHFUL EYE’
“Part modern psychological thriller and part tribute to the more traditional horror story of those like M.R. James, Under A Watchful eye is a gripping read and an intriguing world that author Adam Nevill has populated with memorable characters and an original plot. Curl up in front of the fire with this tale of fear, despair and confusion – but make sure to leave a light on when you go to bed…”
We drum our hooves upon the wooden floor in thanks for this review too!
AUTHOR EVENT: BIRMINGHAM HORROR CON
Just a reminder, but I’ll be a guest author at this year’s Birmingham Horror Con in Edgbaston, Birmingham. I will be launching the hardback edition of UNDER A WATCHFUL EYE back in my home town. The event is held at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground (where I sat beside my Dad and watched England lose to every test side of the 80s, save Bangladesh). My entire backlist will accompany me too. Many guests from the various dimensions of horror will be at the con’. Looks to be a very popular event and I’m really looking forward to hanging out. Details are over at the Birmingham Horror Con’s website here.
My loathsome visage will also be manifesting afterwards as guest of the Birmingham Horror Group (see last post), and at the Swansea Horror Con in July, and the Bristol Horror Con in October, plus Fantasycon 2017 … and that’ll be enough for me, I think, in 2017. BFS and three new cons/events as I maintained in 2016 too.
For much of the remainder of the year I will be fixing myself to my office chair with Phillips screws in order to create new horrors.
Here are the prices for the Birmingham Horror Con.

AUTHOR EVENT: BIRMINGHAM HORROR GROUP
After the Birmingham Horror Con I’ll be speaking in the evening to the Birmingham Horror Group for an hour or so (from around 7:30pm). The event is in the Two Towers Brewery, which is attached to the pub, The Gunmakers Arms (so the beer will never run out). So more horror and ale after the convention and I may make a night of it.
If anyone wants to swing by, it’s totally free, but you need to register here so they know who to expect.

HORRORBLOG UK REVIEW ‘SOME WILL NOT SLEEP’
“My absolute favourite ‘Where Angels Come In” a story of children exploring a haunted house. Not a single one of these stories disappointed me. Mothers Milk left me with a feeling of dread, an uneasiness that caressed my skin to the point I struggled with sleep, such is the power of Adam’s storytelling and rather apt considering the name of the collection. Some of the stories are told from a child’s point of view, in particular, Pig Thing, children hiding from a monster frightened me as I looked down I realised I was hugging a cushion.
In this book, you’ll find a collection full of his signature prose and unflinching observations of life. Adam writes a book of stories that enchant, thrill, and explodes in the reader’s face in all its frightening glory. The cover is evocative, and the stories within won’t disappoint. This is a great book to curl up with while the world is quiet and winter ends its fall outside.”
