LONDON HORRORCON – GUEST AUTHOR: JUNE 30TH – JULY 1ST
My most recent dual role of appearing as a guest author & trader (of signed books) occurred at Walker Stalker, in March, and I am returning to London on June 30th to July 1st, as a guest author at London Horrorcon. I really enjoy my participation at this organisation’s events so I keep signing up for more: they’re like celebrations of the horror field in all of its mediums, from film to comics to memorabilia. Very friendly, well organised and filled with interesting horror folk. Last year, I was a guest at their each of Birmingham cons and the one in Liverpool. Their new London con’ is packed with exhibitors and guests again, including Sid Haig and Bill Moseley from The Devil’s Rejects, the legendary Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes) and Tony Moran (the original Michael Myers from Halloween). My stand also develops apace with a new banner, racking, and even bespoke Ritual Limited bags now – I try and improve presentation as I go along. I’ll be selling my entire range of books, paperback and hardback, published by Pan Macmillan, and my own Ritual Limited editions in print formats. But I don’t show up just to sell books; the main reason I manifest at these conventions is meet readers, new and old, and I’m always delighted to sign anyone’s existing collection – just bring your books along, even if you need a suitcase to get them inside (it’s happened a few times).
I’ve been squeezing in about four of these horror cons a year and have endeavoured to spread them out a bit geographically. So, for all of those folks who’ve emailed me to ask when I’m doing a London horror event, whaddya want from me? This is my second this year.
All the details for London Horrorcon are here. http://www.londonhorrorcon.com/ and the Facebook page is good for offers, features and lineup additions, here https://www.facebook.com/LondonHorrorCon/

THE LINE-UP: 9 UNDERRATED PARANORMAL BOOKS
Very pleased to see The Ritual canter onto this list.
I guess the downside is that the book has made so many underrated book lists, that if it still remains obscure, my other books must be buried so deeply that they’ll only be exhumed 4000 years from now, though by termites who’ll eat their fossilized remains.
Always look on the bright side!
But thank you LINE-UP for continuing to run my tattered flag up the pole.
HORROR AS REVELATION BY STEPHEN J. CLARK
Hasty for the Dark is the subject of an essay by Stephen J. Clark – ‘Horror as Revelation’.
“While reading Adam Nevill’s collection of macabre tales Hasty for the Dark I was reminded of a conclusion I’d reached about horror fiction; that at its best it borders on satire and particularly that peculiar offshoot of satire; the Grotesque. Like the renowned masks of comedy and tragedy the tradition of satire has always had another face besides parody; for what makes us laugh is never that far from what also troubles us.”
Stephen is a marvellous writer of strange stories I discovered relatively recently through his books published by both Egaeus and Swan River Press, and a terrific artist. His new book is available through Zagava.
Thank you for your time and thoughts, Stephen.

BOOKS RECS: ‘THE LITTLE STRANGER’, ‘LONG LANKIN’
I recommend these two recent reads of mine, both “contemporary classic” British supernatural horror tales (in the sense that they’re fairly recent titles but set in the past and specific settings to conjure a particular ghost story aesthetic).
Again, I found Sarah Waters’s complete mastery of her characters and settings impressive; she knows everything about her stories from the inside out, and in such minute detail, which is one reason why those extraordinary twists in her stories are so startling. Makes you realise how few modern novels are written with such care, consideration and preparation. And yet, I’ll wager that books of this quality will probably endure for future readers when the smoke clears. I couldn’t wait to get back to this story and the exquisite writing in my free moments.
The Barraclough is actually a children’s book – I didn’t know until I held it, though don’t let that deter you. I read this novel out of curiosity because I partly based Thin Len from ‘Under a Watchful Eye’ on the same English folk song that haunted me as a child (The Steeleye Span folk song about child killers). A good book here, that also made me consider the contradiction that supernormal horrors perceived through the eyes of the young are so different and more visceral, and yet young characters are rarely used for adult readers – in that adults want to read about adults, children about slightly older children etc, as rule of thumb (though not in the short story). I also thought that the strangest thing about ‘Stranger Things’ – they were able/allowed to break that rule for an adult audience. But I rarely felt I was reading a children’s book with ‘Long Lankin’ and I’ll read it to my Nipper when she’s 20.

AMAZON PRICE PROMOTE THE RITUAL
While the Amazon promotion lasts on THE RITUAL tie-in edition, the paperback is now only £3.75 and the eBook 99p in the UK. I think that’s the lowest price any of my books have ever had in print. As a result, the novel made number 1 in Contemporary Horror. Available here.
And similar discounts have appeared on the US Amazon: $1.41 for the eBook and $9.98 for the US paperback edition. Available here.
I doubt I’ll have another promo like this for a while. Thanks to all who enter those woods . . . [image error]
