RAMSEY CAMPBELL CERTAINLY.
A great honour has been bestowed upon my wizened form by a great writer, who also brought/summoned me into print in horror.
A dedication in ‘Ramsey Campbell Certainly’. Nigh on 600 pages of priceless insights, thoughts, humour, wit, literary criticism and recommendations. An essential companion for horror devotees and writers.
I read ‘Ramsey Campbell Probably’ within a couple of days when it was published in 2002 and made long lists of films to watch and authors I needed to read. I’m already dipping in and out of this and the process begins again.
I am not worthy! But thank you, R.C.

RITUAL LIMITED - 5 YEAR MILESTONE
The second milestone I am going to mark is that of my own imprint, Ritual Limited, making it across the 5 year line in April 2021. In that time I’ve published 3 collections of my own short stories and one novel, each in 4 formats. There have been three free eBooks too + a T-shirt. There will be a new novel this year, making it 5 books in 5 years (not counting the free eBooks).
My reasons for starting it are too numerous to mention here but the imprint has become part of my profession and vision for my horror. It has also safeguarded my intention to write horror fiction, despite whatever is hot right now in mainstream publishing. And, to my eye, this a much fairer way of being compensated as an author.
The books are now selling foreign rights and one has a film option.
My main inspiration for the imprint came from the heavy metal indie record labels I have patronised from a young teen into adulthood.
All being well, there will be a lot more to come from Ritual Limited in the future.
Thanks to all who have supported the venture. I raise a horn of frothing ale to you! And here’s to the next 5 years.

THE RITUAL - 10 YEAR MILESTONE.
Couple of milestones I’m going to mark on here. First up: my novel, ‘The Ritual’, is 10 years old this year.
A lot of readers continue to discover the book today and that delights me. It also makes me consider that at this stage of the game with book publication going vertical (a 4000% increase of new titles, I have read, since ‘The Ritual’ was published by Pan in 2011), that the long game of a book’s life and prospects is far longer now. So I’m chuffed that new readers are still walking into those chilly woods with Luke, Dom, Phil and Hutch, a decade after the novel first saw print.
The book was written under the working title, ‘Children of the Beast’. I wrote most of the novel in 2008 (the first draft after work at Virgin Books, between the hours of 10pm & midnight). The trade paperback was published in April 2011, the mass market in June that year.
I was without a publisher at the time (with my Dad & agent as the only other two guaranteed readers) and set myself some specific aesthetic aims. I wanted to emulate a cinematic horror experience in prose, and also aimed to write a novel that might encourage young men to read, as a way of joining the cause to counter young male sub-literacy (which is horrendous in the UK & US).
I found my way into the story by imagining the worst thing that I might find in an abandoned house, deep in a forest: I arrived at an image of a goat-thing sitting upright in a handmade wooden crib. I’m frankly amazed it appealed to anyone else.
Imaginarium adapted the novel into a film 6 years later – it was in development for 4 years, and for a couple of years before that with another company. Long game. The book also earned my first award, The August Derleth Award for Best Horror Novel from the BFS.
I’ve written a lot of other books but it’s ‘The Ritual’ that has always struck the loudest power chord with readers. On that, I had no control.
And if you don’t drop a match on your own fireworks, then who will? So here’s to ‘The Ritual’ at 10 – a story that has enjoyed a good decade & done an awful lot for me as a writer.

MY BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE SUBJECT OF ARMAGEDDON AT SHEPHERD
A new book website called Shepherd launched in May – an online experience akin to wandering around a book shop that enables readers to find shortlists and recommendations on particular subjects. I liked the concept so contributed an entry. In characteristic fashion, I chose “Armageddon” for my subject with recommendations across fiction and non-fiction. This will make those long winter nights fly by!
[I’m listed as an “expert”. Enthusiast is more accurate]CUNNING FOLK - I READ FROM MY FORTHCOMING NOVEL AT NIGHT WORMS, CELEBRATE HORROR 2021
My latest Newsletter for the Damned has just flown but if you don’t take it, I can be found at the other end of this link, reading the prologue of my forthcoming novel, ‘Cunning Folk’ (published Halloween 2021 by Ritual Limited)
Thanks for having my infernal recitation, Mother Horror.
(& please excuse my ghastly visage, folks!)

'ENLIVENED' RERINTED IN 'TERRIFYING GHOSTS' & WYRD IS SHORTLISTED AT 'THIS IS HORROR'
Flame Tree sent me copies of their new horror hardback anthology, Terrifying Ghosts, edited by Clare Frances Elliott.
My short story ‘Enlivened’ has been reprinted among a host of writers of horror; both classics and contemporary authors.
Wyrd and Other Derelictions has also been shortlisted for ‘Short Story Collection of the Year’ 2020 at This is Horror. There are a whole raft of shortlists for books and art and voting at their website for your horror favourites of 2020 continues until May 22nd. For keeping up to date on horror culture, I also recommend this website’s long-running newsletter and also the podcast that Bob and Michael run. Along with Gingernuts of Horror, they’re British stalwarts who’ve served the horror community for years.
