Stéfan Hörður's first book of poetry, Glugginn snýr í norður (The Window faces North) was thought to be a typical debut in which the author chose well-trodden paths with regard to form and manner of expression, and followed in the footsteps of elder poets. His second volume, Svartálfadansi (Dance of the Black Elf), struck a different tone. The book was met with great interest and admiration, and Stefán Hörður emerged as a fully formed modernist and 'Atom Poet'. Nineteen years passed until his next publication, Hliðin á sléttunni (The Gates to the Prairie), and another eleven until Farvegir (Channels) came out.
