About Purgatory Reign:

And I promise you it is not one full of sunshine.  Of course the man has his good points, I suppose, but the bad outweighs the good.</span><span style="color: black; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif; When Does Emma Michael's do when she's not writing Well I am not writing, I am thinking about writing. Just kidding - partially. A few weeks back a friend of mine made a joke about me being the mad hatter and comparing my many career paths to my ‘hats’. I ended up using the concept as the base for a guest post on a friend Estevan Vega’s blog. It wasn’t until writing that post that I realized just how wide spread my many interests are but that at my core it always comes down to reading and writing, just as with the mad hatter and all of his mad ways, always ends up leading back to hats. When I am not writing I work as a cover artist for publishers and indie authors, scout for blogs for a few publishers marketing teams, take concepts for silk screen designs from their designers and bring them to life to that they can be printed, research about almost anything because I am eternally curious, graphic design, paint, freelance/ghost write, do lots of DIY projects for family and friends and hang out with my fiancé or play with my little white Chihuahua (who thinks she is a Rottweiler). I also enjoy a handful of physical activities depending on how bad my asthma is at any given time; I switch between yoga, walking, fencing and dancing. These are just my current ‘hats’. As you can imagine, I am not very good at sitting still or having any length of time where I don’t have a current project. Slowly I am shifting my career paths away from the many different aspects and towards just writing (and marketing my own novels) and cover art but it takes time and with each of my jobs there are people who depend on me who are going through the slow process of finding a replacement. When it comes down to it, in the end I am simply a writer. It is my joy, main career and all of my life goals surround my writing goals other than a few spare items on my bucket list (black water rafting in New Zealand, seeing the cliffs of Dover in Europe, a list of the most beautiful libraries in the world and seeing a work of art created by Leonardo Di Vinci’s hands in person). So while I could say I am an Author/Cover artist/graphic designer/silk screen designer/marketer/ghost writer I think I will stick with my friend’s comparison. KaSonndra Leigh - The Lost Immortals: When Copper Suns Fall

Interview with Author KaSonndra Leigh, talks about LOST IMMORTALS-When Copper Moon Falls
1) Could you give me five words/adjective to describe yourself? Mother. Dreamer. Sister. Friend. Omniscient.

2) When you're not being an author, what do you usually do? Haha. I don’t think there’s ever a time when I’m not an author. I mean, there’s always a story or something happening in my head. I even have to carry around a little purple notebook to jot it all down. But at some point, I have to force my inner muse to be quiet. That’s when I like to spend time with my family and play Xbox games. Wanna know my favorite? You probably won’t guess, but it’s Tomb Raider and Halo. I even travel to competitions with my sons. I’m an eternal kid I think. :-D

3) How and why did you start writing? I’ve always been one to tell stories. I mean, my grandmother used to listen to me make up some really big ones. My make-believe world was a great way for me to escape. When I was younger, life was different and not always so easy. So I escaped by using my imagination. Fast forward a bit. I attempted to write and publish my first story when I was 19. It was the worst story ever. No plot, no action, cardboard characters. Many years later, I decided to get a formal education because I want to teach in a foreign country one day. I decided to pull that old manuscript out of the drawer and give it a look-see. Well, I rewrote it and my love for writing was suddenly reborn. Just like that. I’ve always admired other writers like Anne Rice, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, etc. but to attempt it myself was really scary. In the end, I’m glad I did it though. I can’t myself doing anything else.

4) Can you briefly explain what When Copper Suns Fall is about? The story follows Chela, a young girl who lives in a rebuilt society. She has recently learned that both she and her sick brother have certain powers. In Chela’s society, a place created from an apocalyptic war between good and bad nephilim, any type of supernatural power is illegal. Anyone thought to be related to a celestial creature will either be killed or exiled. So imagine Chela’s shock after she learned her father, a leader in the governing body, has been hiding his children’s secret. But in defense of Chela’s dad, I’ll say he had a reason for keeping them both in the dark. It’ll be up to Chela to save her brother without being discovered. Enter handsome, dashing demon slayer along with a best guy friend who’d walk the wire for her and Chela is all set!

5) What's the story behind it? Inspiration? When I sat down and began writing When Copper Suns Fall, the story was a standard in your face, super-high fantasy. It came complete with blue creatures, unicorns, princes, and all that. Chela’s name was Cara and Faris had a name that has been overused lately. I wasn’t trying to be fad girl or the Lady Gaga of the writing world. But rather, I was trying to write the story I always wanted to read. One that came to life when my oldest son asked me: “what if angels that looked like people lived in a dystopian society?” The seeds were planted, the lights in my muse’s apartment lit up. The challenge was on. I asked myself: “how do I stick to an urban setting with fantastical elements, but bring my love of dystopia into play?”

6) Was When Copper Suns Fall your very first novel? If not, then what are the others about? Copper Suns wasn’t the first novel I wrote. There were 3 others before this one. I guess that’s why people say it doesn’t seem like the author’s first novel because it’s not. There was the embarrassing one I mentioned in question #3. And then there was one I wrote about a girl from Louisiana. Finally, there’s a paranormal thriller/romance that’ll be released sometime around March of this year. It’s called Hacienda Moon. I’m very excited about that one.

7) Why Dystopian YA? Why not, say, paranormal romance or urban fantasy or dystopian adult fiction where the first two are the more trending genres? Well, depending on who you ask Copper Suns is more of an urban fantasy than a dystopian. The magical element, city setting, kick butt heroines…all that adds up to urban fantasy. In question 5, I mentioned a blurb about this briefly. But the story is really a cross-genre between urban fantasy and dystopian. It was about giving the reader something different, something new. In the end, some people won’t get it, but others really really love it. That’s a wonderful feeling for an author of indie or traditionally published novels.

8) What is your favourite part/scene/quote/phrase in When Copper Suns Fall? Ah, but there are so many I consider my favorites. I’d have to say the scene where Chela and Faris realize their affection for each other has grown beyond the standard protector/protectee mode is my favorite. There’s something that happens during that scene that’s just soooo much fun to go back and read again. :-D

9) Did you base any of your characters on real life people/experiences? Which ones? Most authors will say that they didn’t. You know, legal issues and things are attached to those kind of statements. But in reality, we always do. You plot, story, and especially characters are extensions of your life experiences. In some small way, most stories are based on people we know or have met. At least, that’s my opinion anyway.

10) What was the hardest part in your path to becoming an author? There were many obstacles. But I’d have to say getting readers to trust in a multi-cultural take on a young adult story has been the toughest. My characters are from multiple nationalities, there’s someone for everyone in the book. At first, I was told that would be an obstacle. But then, a magical thing happened. Fans, readers, haters (lol) from all over the world wrote to tell me how much they loved the characters. That’s a score in my book. Mission accomplished.

11) What is the one question that you've always wanted to be asked about in interviews? What would your answer to it be? What movie do you think would’ve made a great book? This question is usually asked the other way around. Most people want to know about what book to movie did you enjoy the best, right? With that being said, I have no idea what my answer to that question would be. There’s just too many movies whirling around my little brain. LoL

Book Marketing Tricks for Independent Publishers

  Being an author nowadays is a lot more work than many of the perceived daydreams young authors have of a career in writing. My partner and I started our small press Phenomenal One Press in 2009 before the word ‘self publishing’ or ‘indie’ publishing was all the rage. We decided to approach our publishing business with planned precision to bring awareness to our product within the typical 3 year rule for most businesses. In addition I’m the Vice President of Mid Atlantic Book Publishers Association which is an affiliate of Independent Book Publishers Association. Now just 3 years after its beginning our small press has six books released by myself and one other author. With hard work and incorporating the expertise of professional editors, proofreaders and many others we’ve achieved our goal and more. If you decide to go the self-publishing route, realize that you should take some time to do the following.  KNOW THE PUBLISHING BIZ AND YOUR MARKETS. Take time to read books on the business of publishing. Attend Pub-U sponsored by the Independent Book Publishers Association. Check out a favorite book of mine that helped me kick-start my own publishing business, 1001 Ways to Market Your Book by John Kremer. Just don’t rush into this without knowing your target markets, where they hang out, what they like, and where your products fit in. BUILD A BRAND PRESENCE. If you want to be accepted as a professional publisher – present yourself as one. Review and research other small publishers even large publishers for the genres you plan on publishing. Note the ones that stand out and why, then replicate that image for your company.  Remember, first impressions are everything. So spend some time creating all the business cards, website branding, press kits, marketing kits, media kits, sales sheets, and anything you plan on giving out to bookstores, readers, schools, and other venues, to present your books and yourself. Also note that consumers are visual so try to nail your publishing business’ image on the first try. As far as covers, don’t skimp on them. Research the covers in the genre you want to sell in, then get a book cover artist to design you a professional cover.  Usually, when I’ve consulted new self publishers or small press, I have to be brutally honest about the value of a quality cover and publishing brand.  CREATE A MARKETING PLAN. Many authors should do this whether they are self-published or not. Make a marketing plan that you direct towards your markets. Also, break up your marketing into daily tasks that take no more than 1 hour a day. And give yourself a day off.  I start with a simple excel spreadsheet which spans the entire 8 months prior to publication. The reason you plan promotion so far ahead is because it takes advertising time to build momentum. Have one marketing plan for your ebook release and another for you paperback or audio releases. When you have your plan split out in daily increments then it’s easy to pass along an item or two to someone else to finish. Also, it helps a self publisher who is doing all the promo and marketing themselves to not get overwhelmed. GET SOME REVIEWS. If you have a great cover, a well-edited book, and a great brand, bloggers and reviewers will take a peek. Believe it or not, many self-publishers are able to garner reviews by presenting themselves in a professional manner and offering up a quality product. Learn to set up your own blog tours, gain your own reviewers, and research them to make sure they like what you are sending them. Do not, under any circumstance, send your book (preferably an ARC--Advance Reader Copy) to a reviewer who doesn’t read or enjoy books similar to yours. Taking that chance can get you a bad review when you have a reviewer that doesn’t even like the genre you want them to review. Readers are rather picky and selective with the types of books they read and enjoy, so make sure that your reviewers understand the genre in advance of you spending money to send them your paperback ARC. FOLLOW UP. Once you build a reader base, keep them in the know. Follow up. Yeah, newsletters help. Friend them on Facebook, Tweet them, but however you do it, communicate with your readers. And just keep adding and adding to your momentum by building an army of supporters who like what you write, cheer you on, and in some cases even market your books for you through word of mouth. My final note of advice is to stick with the same genre for your first two releases since different genres require building a presence and marketing to multiple audiences. In taking the bull by the horns and launching a publishing business, you are no longer an author, you are a publisher.
