Starved for Love

My crit partner, Annie Nicholas, has a new book out–Starved for Love–from Carina Press. That’s awesome. What’s possibly more awesome? A video book review! I’ve never seen one done before, so this was a fresh take on reviews that feels more interactive.

What do you think? Will video reviews become the next big thing? I hope so.

I rather enjoyed this one.

A Feast of Souls Review ARCs

I’m starting the process of sending out review ARCs for A Feast of Souls this week. If you have a review blog, and/or you’re a reader who posts reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, or Barnes and Noble, etc, and are interested in being added to the list for A Feast of Souls, then use my review request form here.

Here is the blurb:

The only way to save her is to bind their souls as one.

Born with the ability to communicate with the dead, few things take Mana by surprise. But when a canis lopes into her life, announcing himself as the long-dead father of a childhood friend, she’s shocked. To make matters worse, he has a dire message that she alone can deliver.

Now Mana must face Vaughn, the male who inspired one too many girlish fantasies, and impart the spirit’s message—without acknowledging her source—so the soul can be laid to rest.

With rumors of a burgeoning clan war setting his nerves on edge, the last thing Vaughn needs is for an innocent to get caught in the crosshairs. But the woman he remembers as an awkward girl refuses to leave his side until he’s heard her out. That’s not the only change in her that calls to him. Her kindness soothes his battle-scarred soul—and he craves her in ways a warrior shouldn’t.

When they are both captured, they learn of an even greater threat. The plague devastating the southlands has come to his clan home. And his best—and only—chance to keep his people alive is the female who walks among the dead.

Warning: This book contains one fierce hero with a nose for danger, one stubborn heroine who smells like trouble, and one wolfish spirit who makes most relationships with the in-laws seem downright tame. Fur, fangs and some biting should be expected. But never fear, the hero has a sword, and he knows how to use it.

And you can find an excerpt on my website here: http://haileyedwards.net/bookshelf-2/by-series/araneae-nation/a-feast-of-souls/

Instructors: Jodi Henley. THE HELP DESK: WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM?

It’s the holiday time – the season for giving, and we here at Savvy love the giving far more than the receiving. So we’ve teamed up with some of our most popular and experienced instructors, editors and writing coaches to help make your holiday season brighter and keep your writing on track during the end of the year insanity.

This workshop is taking place in a very cozy virtual room. We’ll be shoulder to shoulder, crammed into it, but it’s the season for closeness, isn’t it? Even if everyone around you is a stranger. There’ll be an opening ‘lesson’ offering their sagest advice and then it’ll open for questions.

No pickpockets will be allowed in the door but picking each other’s – as well as my – mind to get a better grip on your story or writing career is what this is all about.

Registration is first come, first serve – you have a choice of one instructor to direct one question to. Register here to work with Jodi Henley, the genius behind this Christmas gift.

Jodi Henley is a long-time member of the popular on-line writer’s forum “Romance Divas” where her craft of writing articles have been archived as downloads in The Place for Answers, Romance Diva’s on-line library. Highly sought after for her plain-English approach to problem solving, Jodi spends her time dissecting the craft of writing. Her obsessive Myer-Briggs INTJ personality drives her to explain her findings, and she considers herself lucky to have a receptive audience. A long-time blogger, her blog, “ Will Work for Noodles”, is a popular writer’s reference for people in fields from play-writing to Christian magazines and newspaper journalism.

Praise for Jodi Henley:

“I’m so glad this story is FINALLY going somewhere! I’ve been working on this thing for like 4-5 years and then Jodi came along with her organic structure and BOOM! I always felt like this story could be something special but I just never felt I was ready to work on it. Jodi is a wealth of information”–Lauren Murphy, author of Cara’s Christmas Fantasy

What Readers Want

I’m not talking books, I’m talking swag. I polled readers on Facebook about what promo items they love to find in their conference goody bags. Next year will be my first year attending conferences,  and I wanted to know what items readers want most.

Since several authors have asked for copies of the list, I’m blogging it today.

If you have ideas not shown–let me know! Pros or cons to add? I’m happy to list them. :)

What Readers Want

Pocket mirrors
Pens
Lens cleaning cloths
Temporary tattoos
Magnets
Key chains
Luggage tags
Sports bottles
Drawstring  backpacks
Stickers
Stress toys
Mini puzzles
Card decks
Post-it notes
Mini calendars
Rubber bracelets
Medicine/pill bottles with candy (ex: peppermint pills labeled Zombie Treatment)
Hand lotion
Lip balm
Notepads
Hand sanitizer
Paper “church” fans (Conferences get hot. Fans are popular with hot attendees.)
Coin purses
Chip clips (The swag with naughty and nice applications.)

Other considerations

Several comments on “nice” pens. Not cheap ones. Readers want thick, sturdy ones.
Several comments on chocolate melting onto other goodies, which was not good.
Several comments on buying useful promo. Items readers can use post-conference.

Incandescent by M.V. Freeman

Crimson Romance is a new kid on the block, so I haven’t read any of their titles yet.

I’m thinking this new UF title of theirs will be my first purchase.

Some gifts are unwanted, and Laurie Hudson’s affinity for fire is one she hates. It has destroyed her relationship with her family and she has few friends. She’s fought hard to keep the fire inside suppressed, living a low key life as a bartender, until a brutal and charming man blows into her life.

Around Mikhail Petrov, her careful control disintegrates. She is at once drawn to his urbane, cool demeanor and irritated by his overbearing manner. Her options are taken away when he kidnaps her, forcing her into a fight she wants nothing to do with. As she learns to survive, Laurie faces the hardest choice of all, her freedom or the destruction of the frustrating man she’s come to care for.

A formidable Tri-elemental, Mikhail Petrov commands earth, air, and water. He will use anyone or anything to free himself from the oppressive rule of the Mages, including the untrained fire element he discovers, Laurie. Most of his family has been wiped out in an effort to manipulate him. He thinks he has nothing left to lose. To him, Laurie is a tool, a rare and powerful elemental that is his to use. He fights his feelings for the fire elemental because with caring comes weakness, another opening for destruction. Rarely are emotions as easy to control as his elements.

As he trains Laurie to work with him, he doesn’t expect his growing attachment to her. With the Mages closing in, Mikhail faces a choice: destroy the fledgling relationship with Laurie to gain his coveted freedom, or sacrifice himself for hers.

The excerpt and blurb are posted here, if you haven’t read those yet.

Now I’ve got to get back to Araneae 2.5. I want to get this novella submitted before the end of August. Wish me luck!
