BOOK QUOTE:

"People come to me on waves of memory, but all of them are ghosts. The sound of a distant ocean covers me with surf, that tide that bears me back eternally into the past, back to the place where I was born. My mother took me out in our little fishing boat, out on the open water of the sea. The thrum and hiss of surf upon the shore behind us, the breaking rhythm never ceasing. My mother waited until we were out of sight of land. She waited to tell me the secret."

BOOK QUOTE:

"April comes to us, with her showers sweet. I wake to the cries of little birds before the light comes across the heath. They wait all night with open eyes. Now, with the rain at dawn, their voices make melody." I imagine my mother calling to me, her words echoing across the years. Every night, I slip into the empty winter land of memory."

NEIL GAIMAN QUOTE:

"The best thing about writing fiction is that moment where the story catches fire and comes to life on the page, and suddenly it all makes sense and you know what it’s about and why you’re doing it and what these people are saying and doing, and you get to feel like both the creator and the audience. Everything is suddenly both obvious and surprising… and it’s magic and wonderful and strange."

Welcome to National Readathon Day

Today is National Readathon Day!

Grab your latest book and charge your ereaders, ladies and gentlemen. It’s time for the first-ever National Readathon Day!

On Saturday, January 24, 2015, join readers across the country who will be reading in solidarity for literacy from noon to 4 p.m. (in your own time zone).

National Readathon Day is partnered with FirstGiving.com, and all money raised will go to the National Book Foundation’s efforts to improve literacy and reading proficiency for millions of Americans who lack basic skills. All you need to do to participate is pick a book and read it on January 24. Check here for local readathon events near you. You can also make a donation or create a fund-raising team on FirstGiving.com, or even host your own “reading party.”

What book will you be reading on January 24?

BOOK QUOTE:

"Sound carries far here in the trees. Snow slides off a heavy oak as some creature shuffles through the woods, and ancient branches snap. Moments later, the bracken flutters and the slight shadow of the bird darts into the woods. Deep in the forest now, I hear a low voice that wends back and forth, whispering in secret.” — from the novel Sinful Folk
