SOMEONE LIKE YOU - Victoria Bylin - One Free Book

Welcome, Victoria. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters. This question reminds me of something my husband once asked. He said, “Honey, I have the strangest feeling you’re writing about me.”  For the first time in our long marriage (we just hit 36 years), I wasn’t totally truthful. “Oh, no,” I replied. “This is fiction.” And it is. But to the extent my heroes are strong men who love their families, work hard and struggle to live their faith, I’m writing about the wonderful man who stole my heart when he rode up on a big red motorcycle.
All my fiction has some degree of autobiography. When I write about a character’s spiritual journey, I’ve usually walked in those shoes. I also pull extensively on places I’ve lived and the remarkable people I’ve been blessed to know. If you don’t mind an analogy (I’m addicted to them), my books are the plants that grow out of the garden of my life.
I love that. That’s how I feel, but you put it much better than I ever have. What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?I’m not sure how quirky this is, but I’ve been known to dance around my office before I sit down to write.
Sounds like fun. When did you first discover that you were a writer?I started my first journal when I was in the fifth grade. Putting words on paper has always helped me to sort my thoughts, but I got serious about telling stories in 1999. I started that year with a resolution to finish a book length work of fiction—good, bad, or boring. Around Chapter 3, the story took off, and I knew I’d changed from just wanting to write to being a writer.
Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.I pretty much stick to fiction with an occasional Christian living book folded into the mix. Within the fiction spectrum, I read mostly contemporaries (both romance and women’s fiction) along with some historical. Westerns, WWII, and Americana are my favorite subgenres, but a good Regency or a Downton Abbey era book is always a pleasure. Every so often I’ll ask my husband for something different and venture into a detective story. Last summer I binge-read all of Lawrence Block’s “Keller” books. Talk about a change of pace! They’re about an ordinary guy who’s really a paid assassin. Great plot twists!
How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world? This world is crazy, isn’t it? I can’t say I’m sane all the time, but I read Oswald Chambers’ Someone Like You almost every day. There’s a particular passage about being broken bread and outpoured wine for the sake of spreading the gospel. That’s how I view the super busy times, like right before a deadline.  I see my writing as a ministry. Sometimes it’s okay to exhaust ourselves for a good cause. But then it’s time to rest, read, rebuild, and restore. I try to find the balance over the course of weeks and months, rather than just single days.
How do you choose your characters’ names? The best names just pop into my head, but that doesn’t always happen. In Someone Like You , “Zeke Monroe” popped into my head and it never changed. On the other hand, in the second “You” book (Together With You, April 2015), I changed the hero’s name about ten times before I settled on Ryan Tremaine. I ended up loving that deeply troubled man, but naming him was impossible!
For secondary names, I’m a big fan of the What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?I’m most proud of my family. My husband and I have two sons, both married to wonderful women. We’re also grandparents to twin girls. Writing-wise, I get a happy rush every time I type “The End.” Those two words mean I’ve done my job. After that, the results are up to God.
I have one strange writer quirk. I only wrote The End on my first novel. Since then I haven’t. To me, it feels like overkill. If the story is finished, I know it and the reader should, too. If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why?A rabbit! My husband and I have a long standing joke about that nickname. Rabbits are cute, fun, and very busy running other peoples lives J
What is your favorite food?Right now, it’s the bite-sized Dove Dark Chocolate. Mocha latte, mint, or plain. It’s all delicious.
I have a bowl of Dove Dark Chocolate on my coffee table for the authors who meet in my home for the critique group I lead. (There’s also a smaller bowl for milk chocolate, but there are only a few who love milk chocolate best.) What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?My biggest roadblock is my own writing process. Ideas come fairly easily to me, but I have to work hard to put the best words on paper. I once told my editor that I don’t really write a book. I construct one. My first drafts are nothing but choppy phrases, weak verbs and scattered images. Turning that mess into something readable is exhausting.
I cope with my cumbersome process by writing every day and trusting God for the words. That trust looks a lot like self discipline, which I don’t enjoy at all. Also, if I walk five days a week, eat healthy food, and get enough sleep, I’m far more productive as a writer.
Tell us about the featured book. Someone Like You is a flip-flop reunion story. Back in college, Zeke Monroe and Julia Dare were romantically involved. A minister’s son, Zeke believed his faith was strong, while Julia had no faith at all. Fast forward six years . . . Julia’s now a single mom and a brand new Christian, while Zeke is wrestling with himself and God. He’s also trying to save a historic Californiaresort and needs Julia’s help to do it.
Please give us the first page of the book.Zeke Monroe appreciated a good joke, and this one was on him. Grinning, he crossed the plush charcoal carpet in his office to a desk the size of an aircraft carrier. A new Han Solo action figure guarded his pencil cup, and a handwritten sign was taped to the back of his massive leather chair.
“Starship Command,” he read out loud. “Captain Zeke Monroe to the rescue.”
Chuckling, he peeled off the sign. Everyone on the Caliente Springs management team knew he appreciated a silly prank now and then, and in the eight months he’d been general manager of the historic Californiaresort, he had come to call them all friends.
Which made the task before him daunting at best: save Caliente Springs from bankruptcy, or allow two hundred people to lose their jobs.
People like Ashley, the CS marketing director, whose daughter suffered from severe asthma.
Or Javier, a college kid who helped support his family by working as a concierge.

INTERVIEW TIPS - L Fentress - One Free Book

Dear Readers, I often have people who I’ve met at church contact me because they want to write a book. Laneshia is one of those people. I try to meet with each one. Sometimes I can’t because of my writing schedule, but I could meet with her. Most of those people aren’t anywhere ready to write a book. But when we met, she came prepared, and we were able to look at what she had and move forward quickly. There are so many people looking for jobs, and her easy-to-read book is a valuable tool to help them get a job.
Welcome, Laneshia. What would you like for our readers to know about you personally?I am very passionate about people. I find joy in helping others. I have a motto, “see the need … meet the need”!
Tell us about your family. My father is a jazz musician, but has also had the same job for almost 40 years. My mom is a stay-at-home wife who is the best homemaker I’ve ever met. I am the oldest of three girls and the aunt of two nieces and one nephew. My family is hard-working, reliable, and very involved in ministry. I have a wonderful husband who supports my every endeavor, even the things that make him nervous, and we have an adult daughter. I am learning the tough part in raising her but letting her fly. I am grateful that we are known for good character and integrity.
Have you written other nonfiction books? This is my first book. I never thought I would write, but what better way to reach an audience!
Do you have any other books in the works right now?Not at this time, however I am open to whatever God would have for me to do.
What kinds of hobbies and leisure activities do you enjoy?I love to sing. Coming from a family of musicians and marrying a musician as well helps to keep my singing hobby pretty active. I also enjoy going to new places and trying new restaurants. I am always on the prowl for a new dining experience.
Readers, her husband plays in our worship band at church. Laneshia, why did you write the featured book?Working in human resources and recruiting over the past several years has given me the desire to reach out to those who may seem to be underprivileged in the areas of education and the career. I have talked to many individuals who were clueless in the job interview process. I wrote this book from my heart to the jobseeker, who needs to brush up on interview skills.
What do you want the reader to take away from the book? This book is designed to make you laugh at yourself and learn from the mistakes you have made. Even if you feel confident in your interview skills, you can use these tips to keep you aligned with general office etiquette.
Is there anything you’d like to tell my readers about you or your book?Ultimately, I want you to know that my heart is for helping people. This is the sole purpose of me writing this book.
Please give us the first page or two from the book.
1 ATTITUDE
                  Interview Tip #1
When you have an interview, the moment you arrive, you are being watched.  It is always a great idea to be kind to the people who greet you at the front desk! Drop your bad attitude in the trash! YOU need the job, they already have one! #interviewtips
As a hiring manager, I have seen many good people with bad interview habits walk through my door. Interviews are perfect observation grounds for both the front desk staff and potential coworkers to study how you act in a professional office environment. From the moment you walk through the door of the building, you are being judged by front desk personnel who are often considered the “face” of the organization. If you have a bad attitude, leave it at the door. Be kind to everyone you meet in your prospective next job. You never know who may have input in the hiring decisions being made. Interviews can be a nerve-wracking process, but being prepared both physically and mentally will ease the nerves and increase the chances of you leaving the interview with a job.
Successful candidates know that anyone they interact with once they step foot inside the building can be a steppingstone or roadblock towards being considered for a position. Candidates may only think to put their best foot forward when trying to impress hiring managers, but forget about the other people that are also important facets of the organization. There was one particular occasion where a candidate I interviewed was one step away from the hiring process, but disclosed to a lower level employee that he was wearing nail polish, a forbidden item on the company dress code. The lower level employee immediately reported his findings back to the hiring managers and his offer was immediately rescinded. Lower level employees, such as receptionists and front desk personnel, can be a liaison between hiring managers and other upper level management. Receptionists can be the first interactions between candidates, and their impressions hold more weight than some candidates may think in the hiring process. At a previous job, my employer had a system in place designed to weed out undesirable candidates. Transportation representatives would deliberately interact with the potential candidates to gauge their personality and stress level. The transportation representatives kept mental notes of their interactions with candidates and reported their findings back to the hiring managers. The candidates who were rude or had dismissive attitudes were not hired and were not even allowed to continue to the next step in the hiring process.
As you can see, Readers, this is valuable information. Laneshia, where on the Internet can the readers find you?
You can find me at my website www.laneshiafentress.com or my Facebook and Instagram page which is Laneshia Fentress or my twitter handle which is @favoredfentress.
Thank you, Laneshia, for sharing your book with us. I hope all the readers who have someone in their families looking for a job or seeking a better position will get a copy.

BLACK MAMBA - Diane Theiler - One Free Book

Welcome back, Diane. Why do you write the kind of books you do? I write Christian suspense. I like to sit down with a good book and not have to worry about bad words or inappropriate scenes. But on the other hand, I don’t want a boring book. I like suspense and excitement. I like to think outside of the box.
Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life? There are too many to name just one. Marriage, the birth of my children, the birth of my grandchildren, and spending time with family to name a few.
How has being published changed your life?Being published has given me that extra confidence. It’s made me realize I can do anything I set out to do. When I started writing, I never really thought I’d get published. I didn’t know the steps required. When Jean Kinsey and Becky Kelley came alongside and started mentoring me because they liked my writing, my life changed. I gained confidence and was excited to put forth the effort needed to get where I wanted to go.
What are you reading right now? I just finished Mississippi Nights by D.M. Webb
I’ve featured her on the blog. What is your current work in progress? I am now working on Unintentional Deception. A romance where Cathleen must deal with her past and come to terms with the present in order to move forward. She is torn between getting married her best friend, Simon, who is safe, or taking a chance on Adam, the man she really loves.
What would be your dream vacation?A quiet writer’s retreat somewhere with beautiful scenery.
How do you choose your settings for each book? When I write, my imagination takes over and I just write. Whatever flows from the pen sets the course for the story.
If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why? My mother. You never know how long you have. She’s been through so much. And even though she’s always come through, I know one day she will go home to be with the Lord.
What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?I like to paint and make crafts. Working puzzles has also always been a favorite. My daughter and I have puzzle wars, where we work the same puzzles to see who finishes first. My husband loves auctions, and I love yard sales. We both love finding treasure among someone else’s junk.
What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?Myself. Sometimes I just get lazy, but other times I’m really good at finding excuses why I don’t have time to write. I have to remind myself it’s all about priorities and remember what it is I want to accomplish and why. I then make myself get back on track. Once I get started again, off I go.
What advice would you give to a beginning author?Don’t give up. Also don’t be super sensitive when people criticize an aspect of your writing. Take their advice and learn from it. The more people correct you, the better you will get. Super sensitive people have a lot of trouble. They get their feelings hurt and have trouble moving on. As a writer you will be rejected and corrected many times. Each time should make you stronger and a better writer. Keep at it. One day you’ll realize that you’ve got it!
Tell us about the featured book. Christene Bickley, the truth diamonds, and a deadly game of Black Mamba with its strategic moves, cause Bradley C. Whitmore to risk everything to save the woman he loves.
Determined to keep his vow to God and be the best Secret Agent he can be, Brad infiltrates a cell of traffickers and does the unthinkable in order to solve his case and save Christene. The reckless decision sends both Christene’s and his lives into chaos as they strive to outwit elite Black Mamba warriors who are determined to kill them. Overcoming one obstacle after another takes its toll when events transpire to keep Brad and Christene apart, but Brad is determined to keep them together.
Please give us the first page of the book.Secret agent Bradley C. Whitmore pushed past the man who blocked the entrance of the Honey Jam Café. In an instant he exchanged the busyness of the street for the buzz of conversation and the clatter of dishes inside. He took in a deep breath, and cringed when his stomach growled in appreciation. The food smelled delicious. Refusing to be distracted his trained eye took in the diner’s occupants and came to rest on the one he sought. Miss Christene Bickley.
His pulsed raced at the sight of her. Tray in hand she maneuvered between the tables. Ten years of searching and here she was, a waitress in his sister’s café. What were the odds of that? Brad chuckled as he made his way to an empty table.
His smile faltered when he met his sister’s stare. Standing at the counter, her eyes widened in disbelief, and then her back stiffened. The fisted hands at her side pierced his heart. Faith hadn’t forgiven him for deserting her years ago. If only he could tell her the truth—explain what happened. But he couldn’t.
Faith held his gaze as she made her way to his table, poured him a cup of coffee, and took his order. Tucking the pen and pad in her pocket, she ran her hand through her tight blonde curls.
“Aren’t you even going to say hello?” Michael arched a brow in her direction.
Faith glared at him, turned her back, and headed for the kitchen.
A few minutes later she slid a plate in front of him. The salty scent of bacon and eggs had him salivating, and his stomach screamed for him to take the edge off his hunger. He would confront Christene after he ate. Maybe she wouldn’t be so busy then.
“Okay, out with it. What are you doing here”" Faith took silverware from her apron and placed the napkin-bound bundle on the table.

THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN - Diane Dean White - One Free Book

Welcome, Diane. Tell us how much of yourself you write into your characters.I don’t purposely do it, but I’m sure actions and dialogue work its way in. My new release, This Side of Heaven , includes a young wife/mother age 27 and an older aunt who comes to spend time at the ancestral home. An autumn romance blooms with the older aunt…and yet I realized I’m her age!! It’s fairly easy to be both ages in fiction. J
What is the quirkiest thing you have ever done?Hum…let me count the ways. I think starting to drive across the Mighty Mackinaw Bridgeand deciding I simply couldn’t do it, might rate up high on the scale. My grandmother was in the front seat, and our three grade-schoolers were in the back. I knew as we approached where the water started, I couldn’t do it. I was grateful the traffic wasn’t busy. I backed up all the way and took the first ramp off!
When did you first discover you were a writer? In 6th grade, I ask for a typewriter for Christmas. I enjoyed writing stories and poetry. I used the hunt and peck method until summer school, and they held a typing class. It was nice to learn on an electric typewriter … but I continued to type away on my old black manual, Royal. Being able to express my feelings was so important, and the best way I could do it was through poetry and stories.
Tell us the range of the kinds of books you enjoy reading.I enjoy suspense, Grisham and Sidney Sheldon. But also Eugenia Price, Victoria Holt, Barbara Taylor Bradford and many others. I enjoy a wide range of genres.
How do you keep your sanity in our run, run, run world?Fairly easy. I rise early and have time with the Lord and pray about the day ahead and for those going through difficult times and health issues. Because of a back injury I don’t do a lot of running, or even driving now. I have a loving hubby, and he’s been a blessing for 44 years in July. J
How do you choose your characters’ names?Depending on the time period, which most of mine are present day, I go with names that are popular and also known in the area where I’m writing. We have two grown sons, and somehow names that start with the first letter of their name seem to make its way into my manuscript. Our daughter and hubby have three daughters, and I try to work their names in at various times, too.
What is the accomplishment that you are most proud of?In my life, it would be our three grown children. They have been a real blessing to us, and thank God for them and allowing us to enjoy raising them, creating memories that we will always enjoy.
If you were an animal, which one would you be, and why? That would be a lamb … to be led by the Shepherd.
What is your favorite food?My taste buds have changed with most foods, but good chocolate remain a best-seller for me, and I love See’s candy most. I also enjoy a good Sunday roast, turkey, and ham. I love fresh seafood, and living in Florida we eat that often.
What is the problem with writing that was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?Because I started out as a newspaper reporter with a weekly column, and continued to do freelance work and then started writing short stories, I believe relearning the method most publishers consider correct was my biggest hurdle. In a short story you tell it, and POV and back-story aren’t issues. It’s short to the point. When I wrote Carolina in the Morning I didn’t know about the rules and what I would later learn when joining a critique group. I was taken back that the many people who enjoyed my writing didn’t realize how bad I was, according to the new rules. Once I grew a tough hide and reworked my craft, I continued to learn. I also learned a lot by critiquing others books, and that’s something I continue to do and enjoy helping other writers.
Tell us about the featured book. This Side of Heaven takes place present day in rural Georgia. My main female character is brought from her northern roots, along with two preschoolers, in an underground protection program. She has been on the run from an abusive husband, and in protection for several weeks. She finally arrives in the warm climate, a small house, surrounded by flowers and pecans. Her children are safe and play under her watchful eye. Detective Gafee, a neighbor stops by to welcome the young mother and children, offering a small puppy for their enjoyment. He immediately falls in love with her, but thinking she is grieving for her dead husband. Darlene doesn’t want anyone to know the truth, including Brett.
Please give us the first page of the book.A dove cooed softly as Darlene glanced up from gardening to capture a gentle breeze in the unbearable October heat. Buttons was chasing a butterfly. Probably wants a playmate. She laughed, what a wonderful day when the handsome police officer brought that little German shepherd into their lives. Could life be any better? The earth beckoned her, and she resumed her work in the flower beds. Grateful thoughts for the single-story house the underground protection provided after her escape from a violent husband, always a constant blessing. Darlene enjoyed the fragrance of flowers in bloom, treasures from the pecan tree, and a peaceful country setting, allowing her children to safely play surrounded by natural beauty. Inhaling the floral scent of Honeysuckle nearby, her attention was diverted by a GeorgeStrait classic drifting her way; “All my exes live in Texas…”             Patti Sutton’s little red sports car made a sharp turn into the driveway, as the tires chirped through a hard down shift. The door opened, and the thirty-something five-foot two redhead wearing tan Capris, a coral T-shirt, and a “Go Bulldogs” ball cap, stepped out with painted toes, matching her T, onto the concrete. Darlene set aside her gardening tools and removed her gloves. She stood rubbing a sore muscle in her back and blotting moisture from her face … I wonder why Patti is so eager to see me this early.  She’d been a big help to Darlene in the underground program, giving her advice on everything from where to buy children’s clothing at fair prices, and which grocery stores carried the best coupons. It would soon be a year since Darlene and her children had come to rural Georgiain the care of two strangers that late night. Darlene placed her hand over her eyes to shield the sun and greeted her guest.

HER ONE AND ONLY - Becky Wade - One Free Ebook or Print Book. PLUS Much More

Dear Readers, my friend, Becky Wade, just released Her One and Only the last book in her Porter family series. As I’ve shared with you before, I love Becky’s writing. Her stories are set in the area where we both live, so the setting is very familiar … and authentic. Her characters grab my heart and pull me into the story and I walk beside them all the way to the end. Then they linger in my thoughts for quite awhile. And the storylines are well-developed. I’m reading Her One and Only right now, and I’m also enjoying when the other Porter series characters appear as well.
Welcome back, Becky. What are some of the spiritual themes you like to write about? I love to write about the pursuing and faithful love that God has for us. A few books into my Christian Fiction career, I realized that all of my stories celebrate second chances at love and long held dreams. It's so inspiring and reassuring to think that God can take our imperfection and make something beautiful out of it in His time and in His way.
What other books of yours are coming out soon? Her One and Only concludes my four book Porter Family series! This time next year the first book in my new series, The Bradford Sisters, will hit shelves.
I’ll be looking forward to that new series. We must feature them on the blog. If you could spend an evening with one contemporary person (not a family member of yours), who would it be and why?
Channing Tatum. Why? Because he can act, dance, and isn't exactly difficult on the eyes.
So true. What historical person would you like to meet (besides Jesus) and why?I’m interested in genealogy and really enjoy watching the TV show Who Do You Think You Are, which traces the heritage of celebrities. I’d be fascinated to meet the first ancestor of mine who moved to America. Why? Because I’d like to see what they look like, hear how they talk, and learn about their motivation for pulling up stakes and traveling to the U.S.A.
How can you encourage authors who have been receiving only rejections from publishers? For the first four years after I started writing, I received nothing but rejections from publishers. It was hard! What kept me going:             1) My love of writing, which is critically important to protect and nurture at every stage of a writer's journey.             2) Writer friends who were walking the same stretch of the path that I was walking. We encouraged each other!             3) Good old fashioned perseverance.             4) Faith that God would work it out however it was meant to work out according to His timing. It’s critical to remember that our identity as children of the King is not in any way tied to our writing success or lack thereof. Having your work published or hitting a bestseller list will never truly satisfy. The only thing that satisfies is our relationship with Him.
A very important thing for Christian authors to learn. Tell us about the featured book. I enjoy taking a classic romance novel premise and giving it my own unique twist. Her One and Only is my version of a ‘bodyguard romance.’ In most bodyguard romances, the hero is the bodyguard. Does anyone remember the Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston movie?
In Her One and Only , my heroine, Dru Porter, is the bodyguard. She meets NFL superstar Gray Fowler when she’s assigned to protect him from the stalker who’s been sending him death threats.
I had a great time writing Dru because she’s so strong and courageous. Ther’'s suspense in Her One and Only as well as lots of romance, humor, Texasflavor, and family.
Please give us the first page of the book for my readers.PrologueDru lifted her handgun, leveling it on Gray’s stalker as she rushed forward through the crowd. The realization that she’d been outsmarted washed over her with sickening certainty. Gray was unprotected. The stalker had pistols in both hands, both barrels aimed at Gray. Had she been next to Gray, she’d have shoved him down, been able to dodge in front to keep him safe. But she was much too far away from him for that. Too far. Despair arced through her mind and heart. She was too far. He was unprotected.
“Lower your weapons,” she demanded, shouldering past bystanders.             The stalker’s face turned sharply in her direction, giving her a direct line of sight into facial features that were drawn and blank. Viciously cold.             The attacker kept one of the guns trained on Gray. The other pistol moved, with chilling deliberation, until its barrel aimed squarely at Dru.            “No!” Gray yelled.             The stalker’s attention returned to Gray, fingers whitening on the triggers.

MARS ... WITH VENUS RISING - Hope Toler Dougherty - One Free Book

Bio:  Hope Toler Dougherty holds a Master's degree in English and taught at EastCarolina Universityas well as York Technical College. A member of ACFW, RWA and SinC, she writes for Almost an Author. Before writing novels, she published non-fiction articles on topics ranging from gardening with children to writing apprehension. She cheers for the Pittsburgh Steelers, ACC basketball, and Army West Point Football. Hope and her husband, Kevin, live in North Carolina and chat with their two daughters and twin sons through ooVoo.
Welcome back, Hope. Why do you write the kind of books you do?I believe writing fiction is my calling right now. It’s funny because when I taught English on the college level, I taught American literature. Reading love stories was a guilty pleasure I kept secret. Now God has me writing love stories!
Besides when you came to know the Lord, what is the happiest day in your life?Of course, my wedding because almost everyone we loved and who loved us came together in one place. Then the birth days of all of our children, especially our last, the twin sons, because I felt our family was complete. Thanksgiving week of 2014 stands out because all four children were home. We were introducing our holiday to a British friend. Another college friend of our second daughter’s stayed with us. Extended family members and high school friends kept dropping by. It seemed like I was cooking from dawn till dusk, and I loved it. With two sons marching toward the military life, I know we won’t always be able to celebrate together. I kept stopping myself in the middle of stirring something or shoving another dish in the oven and repeating, “Thank you, God. Thank you, God. Thank you, God.”
I have a grandson who served in the military for over ten year, and holidays with him were always iffy. He’s out now, and the last three major holidays, we were all together. I loved it. How has being published changed your life?I have business cards and a website now. Besides that, my faith is much more open now. When people read my books, they know exactly where I stand.
What are you reading right now?I’m reading Carol Award entries now. I’m also reading The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. It’s the story of the 1936 Olympic rowing team. Fascinating story.
What is your current work in progress? My agent, Jim Hart, is trying to find a home for my third manuscript, Rescued Hearts, a romantic suspense. I’m about 40,000 words into my fourth, a romance set in Charlotte, North Carolina. The main male character is struggling to let go of people’s expectations of him and to understand and embrace God’s plans for him.
What would be your dream vacation? An international trip would be Italy and Greece. For a stateside trip, I’d love to experience a Mississippi River cruise and a bicycle tour of Vermont.
How do you choose your settings for each book?My settings sort of choose themselves. I started daydreaming about Galway, Ireland, and that daydream became a scene in my first novel, Irish Encounter. For Mars…With Venus Rising , I had some ideas for a quirky story, and I thought about Mars, Pennsylvania. It’s a cool little town outside Pittsburghwith a flying saucer on the town square. The residents call themselves Martians. The football team is named the Planets. I thought it’d be fun to set a story there.
If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why? For writers, I choose Anne Tyler and Liane Moriarty. I love the way they write. Charlie Rose, Nora O’Donnell, and Gail King are smart and funny on CBS This Morning. Bobby Bones, a radio personality, has an interesting life story and seems like a fun person.
What are your hobbies, besides writing and reading?I love to cook, crochet, and send real mail.
What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?Fear. Fear of writing stupid sentences. Fear that no one will like the story. Fear that I’ll get halfway into a story and not be able to finish it. I have to pray it away and remember all those Bible verses about being strong and courageous, that God is with me and my constant help, that He gave me a spirit of power, not fear.
What advice would you give to a beginning author?Write. Write. Write. Pray. Read in the genre you write in. Read good writing. Pray. Connect with other writers. Expect rejection. Listen to constructive criticism. Pray. Write.
All very good advice. Tell us about the featured book. This is the back cover copy:A meddling horse, paper bag floors, and a flying saucer on the town square. The little town of Marshas it all—including a brand new resident who might spell heartache for one of its own.

Twenty-something Penn Davenport yearns for an exciting life in the big city and wants to shed the label of orphan that she's worn for years. To achieve that dream, she must pass the CPA exam then move away from the two aunts who reared her after her parents died in a plane crash.

When John Townsend—full of life and the joy of living—moves to town, he rattles Penn's view of herself, her life, and her dreams...which isn't such a bad thing until she falls for him…and discovers he’s a pilot.
Please give us the first page of the book.“Come on, Peri. You’re making me late. Again.”            Penn Davenport wiggled the carrot in front of the escape artist horse and squeezed the halter she’d hidden behind her back.             The gray roan stretched his long neck toward the orange prize and sniffed. As tame as an old lap dog, Peri had a mind of his own. When he decided to visit the neighboring houses, he worried the lock on his corral gate until it popped and he trotted into freedom.            Fortunately, most of her neighbors on Oakland Street loved Peri, welcomed his visits and his nosey poking under their shelters or garages. Unfortunately, they encouraged his visits with sugar cubes and hugs.            If he didn’t want to return home yet, she’d never be able to slide the halter over his head. She glanced at her watch. Twelve minutes until the planning meeting for the Mars Area Apple Fest began. If this crazy horse cooperated, she might have a chance to settle into a chair before the minutes were read.            “Here we go, darling. Take a bite of this delicious carrot. Come on. I know you want it.” Please, God, help me get Peri back home. You know how I hate being late.            Peri backed up a step, and Penn’s hope for an easy capture melted like chocolate on the floorboard of a locked-up car in mid-July. She gritted her teeth.
An interesting and humorous opening.
