One of my favorite quotes from HUNTED
As authors and as readers, we each have passages that we love in books for various reasons. This is one of my favorite quotes from HUNTED:
"I want to chase after him, ask why he took such a crazy risk to give me a bar of chocolate. But I think I know the answer. You don't feel much like living if you can't be yourself."
-quote from HUNTED by Cheryl Rainfield, p. 63 (US hardcover version).
It really resonates with me–though it should, since I wrote it! (grinning)
My interview on YA Beyond
Today I'm interviewed on YA Beyond, where I talk about why I write, how I keep motivated, how I stay focused on my writing, and more. Hope you'll check it out.

New Jane Yolen SCBWI Grant for Mid-List Authors
Jane Yolen has just started a new grant through SCBWI for mid-list authors/books, especially for authors whose books are important but might not be reaching a best seller status. Jane speaks, I think, in a lovely way about it though you'll have to really turn up the volume to hear. What a fantastic thing for Jane to do!
The details aren't up yet on SCBWI.org, but they will be.

children's ebooks – one free, one $0.99 today only
A Drowned Maiden's Hair by Laura Amy Schlitz is $0.99 today only on Amazon
Grade 4-8–Maud's life at an orphanage has been one of neglect and poverty. When the Hawthorne sisters appear out of nowhere and adopt the 11-year-old troublemaker, she vows to be obedient. Distracted by unfamiliar pleasures such as new clothes, ice cream, and indoor plumbing, she doesn't worry too much about the sisters' insistence that her presence in their home be kept hidden. Well cared for but bored, she finds a way to communicate with Muffet, a deaf serving woman, and the two develop a close relationship. Mysteries abound, and Maud soon discovers the family secret–the Hawthorne sisters make their living by conducting fraudulent séances and they need Maud to play the part of a girl's ghost to deceive a grieving mother. Wanting to earn her guardians' affections, Maud is drawn further and further into the scheme despite her growing qualms of conscience. Only after a betrayal and a tragedy does she finally find the loving home for which she longs. Filled with heavy atmosphere and suspense, this story re-creates life in early-20th-century New England and showcases the plight of orphans. Maud is a charismatic, three-dimensional character who is torn between doing the right thing and putting her own needs first. While much of the plot is predictable, particularly the ending, the book will find an audience with fans of gothic tales.

Creating a LGBTQ safe house PrideSpace
Kat Wells, Jessica Weinschenk, and Laurin Blanchard, three amazing women, are starting up a non-profit LGBTQ safe house called PrideSpace where lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer people can come if they've been bullied, kicked out of their house, or need support. This is such an important and needed service, something so many of us could have used when we were teens, something that many teens and adults could use now. They're in the paperwork planning stages now, and have the support of great organizations like Matthew's Place and It Gets Better. But they can use all the support and help they can get to get this off the ground. If you have anything that would help to auction off for this cause, you can contact Kat Wells at pridespaceinc@gmail.com. (I will be donating a signed copy of SCARS and of HUNTED.) I'll include more info as the project progresses or I hear more.
I hope you'll watch the video below as Kat talks about what she's doing.
