Possession of Souls

Possesion of Souls.
Book 5.
The final installment in the Of Witches and Warlocks series.
Fear and desperation leave Portia and Vance clinging to threadbare hope as life is given, and taken away. Manipulated, driven by bloodlust and the desire to claim sole possession, the stakes are raised higher than they've ever been before. Evil rises with the intent to dominate, leading them and their coven to the ultimate confrontation—a battle which will force one of them to make a devastating, life-altering decision. Who will survive the final stand?
Excerpt:
He turned, taking several steps toward me before he stopped and pointed a finger. "I know what you're doing, Portia, and I don't like it one bit!" His eyes flashed angrily.
"What am I doing?" I asked, trying to keep up my charade.
"Oh, please, spare me the whole innocent routine. I know you—intimately. I can smell your trap a mile away."
"Then feel free to enlighten me." I folded my arms tightly across my chest.
"See!" He gestured to my arms. "You're doing it right now!" he added sounding flustered.
"Doing what?" I asked, throwing my hands up in frustration, as I honestly began to wonder if he was really losing it.
"Making yourself look so … edible," he answered, finally seizing onto a word.
I started laughing. "And what does one do exactly, Vance, to make themselves look edible?" I took a deliberate step toward him.
"What you're doing right now." His heated expression traveled over me.
"And what am I doing right now?" I asked, taking another step closer, walking very slowly as I crossed the space.
"You're … moving ... and talking," he replied, not making any sense at all, and I could tell he was completely flustered.
"So, you're saying I shouldn't move or talk?" I continued in his direction.
"Yes." He swallowed thickly before he realized how absurd he sounded. "I mean no," he muttered before adding, "I don't know. You just need to stop."
I was standing next to him now, and I leaned in close to his body, feeling him sway toward me as if he were magnetized, drawn especially to me.
"Portia," he whispered, and I could feel his control faltering.
"Yes, Vance?" I murmured, knowing I was so close to being triumphant.
He hovered above me, his head tilted as his gaze brushed back and forth between my lips and neck. His hand lifted, reaching out with what looked like a slight tremor. The pad of his thumb caressed lightly over my cheek before he traced his fingers down my neck, over my collarbone and onto the exposed skin inside my shirt.
My breath caught at his touch, and his eyes locked with mine as we leaned closer together ...

Interview from The Demon Kiss Tour
Interview from The Demon Kiss tour, originally featured on the fabulous blog, Paranormal Opinion!
[image error] I've read that Matt Lanter is the inspiration for the character of Vance in your books. Can you tell us more about this?
Ha! Of course! I'm a huge fan of Matt Lanter, though I have to admit I didn't know who he was before I started writing. When I came up with the character for Vance Mangum I instantly had an image of Matt flash into my head at the same time. For the life of me I couldn't remember where I'd seen him before and I spent a whole day racking my brain before I thought it might have been on an episode of 90210. When I realized I'd found him, I researched everything he'd acted in, buying his movies and downloading previous television shows. I loved his work and he became the image of Vance for me. I studied his movements, gestures, and reactions to situations and used his likeness to model Vance after. It was a very fun experience for me, and I think it help to make Vance a very really character in my head. It was even more spectacular to get to share this experience with Matt too, and have his support with it as well. He's a fantastic guy! (If you aren't watching him…please do yourself a favor and go look him up. He's on Twitter too and has been especially chatty lately so go drop him a tweet!)
Where did you find the models you used for your book covers?
That's actually my lovely, uber-talented daughter, Kamery, and her now husband Jake. I'd initially used their images to spice up things on the website for the books when they were dating. I could hardly afford to use Matt (wouldn't that be nice) and I wanted to give people something to look at. Kamery is a very good actress/singer who has been in several plays, musical productions and a movie too. She has good stage presence and she's very photogenic. Jake was her all-star boyfriend who is extremely good looking and photogenic as well so I approached them about posing for the covers and they were all for it. I think they did a good job, though I personally cannot think of them in the role while I write! Ha, ha. That would kill the story for me!
Which book in the series was the hardest to write?
So far, probably book four, The Dark Rising. I had another book release right in the middle of writing it and that kind of threw me off my groove. When I came back to it I decided I didn't like the original direction I'd been headed with the story. It kind of stalled, going into a stagnant phase that was difficult to come out of. It was actually a tip from my wonderful mother-in-law that got my brain all sparked up again and helped me to come up with a new storyline. Once I got the rough draft finished, I gave it to my best friend who also offered some good suggestions that helped to push the book from good to exceptional, in my opinion. A few changes to the ending also sent it even further into the realm of fantastic. It really was a process of evolving with that book, but I think the end result is going to rock the readers' socks off! LOL
Do you ever experience writer's block?
I have on occasion, but it never happened to me until the incident with book four, so it was quite a shock to me when it did. I try not to panic too badly when it does occur. I check to see how tired I am, have I been pushing myself too much lately, and would I benefit from walking away from it for a bit. Usually, if I keep trying to write through it, something eventually spawns a new path to follow. If it doesn't and I find myself beginning to slay my characters with my bad mood then I will get up and walk away from it. That's when I usually go for a weekend getaway with my hubby and we talk plot lines while we drive. He never fails to inspire with something in our conversations and it always works out in the end.
Which of your characters is your favorite?
Well, I truly love things about all of them, but I would be lying if I didn't say Vance was my favorite. I really connect with his character for some reason. His emotions and reactions to things are intriguing to me and he always seems to be the loudest voice talking in my head. There have been a couple different occasions when I thought I was finished with a particular storyline only to have him keep whispering different ways for things to go in my head. I've decided that he's an undiagnosed personality of mine and that I should seek mental treatment. Ha, ha! All kidding aside…I really do love him and my heart bleeds for him regularly.
What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author?
I would probably do something in photography and digital media. I really love taking pictures and like dabbling in artistic designs with Photoshop too. I haven't had any official training in it though. I just have a great camera and do a lot of online tutorials to learn new things. I try to do something new with it regularly, but my current schedule doesn't always permit it. But it's fun when it does happen!
Do you have any advice for other writers?
I think if anyone aspires to try writing they should give it an honest shot. Yes, there are a lot out there, but no two people would tell the same story line in the same way. Don't be afraid to step out and share your unique view with the world. And in the event these writers want to be published, I would tell them to do rigorous research on anyone they would consider doing business with. Don't let your work fall prey to sharks that would take your work and use it to their benefit. Those kinds of people are out there unfortunately waiting to scam the unsuspecting. I don't like to be a "nay-sayer" but I've seen too many writers fall victim to this sort of thing. Protect your work!
Are you working on anything now?
I am. I'm finishing up book five for the Of Witches and Warlocks series, along with doing some final editing on book four before it comes out near the end of June. I'm also doing some editing on a fantasy/fairytale young adult book that will be released after this series, and I'm in the middle of being published into a book called Dream On, which is a collaborative anthology of several great authors. So lots of great things going on that I'm excited for!
How many books will be in this series?
The fifth book, Possession of Souls, will be the last one. I'm forcing Vance to shut up after this one is done!! I don't think he'll argue with me this time after everything I've put him through! LOL No, really I'm excited for it though and I look forward to sharing it. It's been a fun book to write!! Plus my husband will be happy that he's not competing with a hot warlock anymore!!

Vance Kisses

Today's post is going to pack a little heat! Can you handle it? One thing I always get comments on is how much readers enjoy the kisses in the Of Witches and Warlocks series. Those of you who followed my last tour know I'm a big fan of kissing! So today I have a very SPECIAL TREAT in store for you. I will be featuring a kiss from each of the books…yep…1 through 5!! I worked hard to choose kisses that would keep things spoiler free. I will try to keep things brief, but that's sort of difficult since Vance doesn't do things briefly! LOL I hope you will enjoy!
Kiss #1: The Trouble with Spells
His touch only increased my reaction to him and I reached out to pull him closer to me, enveloping him in a deep passionate kiss, opening my mouth to his invasion.
I released everything I had pent up inside of me back into him, and he wrapped his arms tightly around me, answering my intensity, before his hands slid up to tangle in my hair. His mouth pressed even harder against my lips and he continued to devour them.
My pulse was racing, on fire, and I could feel the same emanating from him. It was like someone had lit a match to gasoline, causing an explosion we had no control over, and I could think of only one thing. I wanted more.
I didn't even know how it had happened, but somehow that infernal quilt separating us finally got pushed out of the way and he moved, laying his body over the top of mine. I welcomed his heated weight against me, and my hands found their way up under his shirt. I ran them feverishly over his hard muscled back, pressing him even closer to me.
His lips left my mouth, sliding over my face to the skin of my neck, and he bit me lightly, trailing little love bites down to my collar bone and I couldn't help letting out a soft moan, my body naturally arching up against him when his tongue flicked out, licking a sensitive spot there.
Kiss #2: The Demon Kiss
Then kiss me."
I knew I was tempting fate with this request, but I had to know how he would react.
He hesitated for a moment before he finally pulled me to him and kissed me gently.
I didn't close my eyes. I wanted to see his reaction, and I found he didn't close his eyes either, instead choosing to look deep into my mine.
He rolled me over suddenly, so I was on my back and he was leaning over me. He just looked at me for a minute, stroking my hair, and then he brought his mouth down to mine and kissed me like he was starving to death.
I felt the passion between us heat up quickly, but still I didn't take my eyes off him. I saw the red color flash through his irises, signaling that his desires could be getting out of control.
He didn't move from me, though, continuing to kiss me. As his fervor began to grow his eyes became redder still.
I watched him, until he left my face to trail his kisses down my throat to the purple mark that was so clearly visible on my neck. I closed my eyes and let him nibble slightly at the spot before he moved back up to my lips.
I reopened my eyes to stare into his flaming ones.
"You're playing with fire you know," he commented casually, brushing his lips against mine.
"Yes, I know." I stared up at him.
"Why tempt fate? Or me for that matter?" He pulled back a little bit from me so he could look at me.
"Because, if you were going to lose it and do something awful to me, you'd have done it by now. You have more control over yourself than you think."
"So you're testing me then?"
"Yes."
He started kissing me again. This time a little more roughly, passionately. His hands tangled in my hair, occasionally leaving to run up and down my arms, stroking them.
I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him down against me tightly, kissing him back with everything I had.
I heard him let out a small groan, and he pulled back away from my mouth so he could kiss my cheek.
"We need to stop this," he said and moved back down my neck to suck on that same spot again.
"No. I don't want to." I held him against me even harder.
I knew I was supposed to be just testing him, but I could feel that control slipping as he sucked at my throat.
"Don't stop," I said, breathless.
Kiss #3: Blood of the White Witch
He looked like some sort of mythical god standing in front of me with the very air crackling and swirling around him.
Suddenly his fingers felt very cold on my lips, and I looked down to see that the tips of them had ice on them also, and I realized my powers were transferring to him as well.
"Look at the two of us." He grinned seductively while continuing to run his thumb over my lower lip. "Fire and Ice … literally."
"How are you doing this?" I asked him.
"I'm not. It's this place. It's intensifying everything," he replied dipping in to replace his thumb with his ever so hot lips.
Another shock of power rolled through me again, and my knees buckled so badly I would have fallen except he held me so firmly pinned there with his body. He kissed me feverishly, twisting his free hand into my hair, and I could feel the heat of his magic roll through me with the contact.
He burned so hot it was almost unbearable for me. I had never realized how cold my magic felt before this point, but getting to experience him in this way was shedding a whole new light on him for me.
He kissed me for a long, long time until I started to notice that both of our lips were becoming icy as well.
He broke the kiss with a laugh.
"We're going to have to stop this, or you're going to turn me to a block of ice." He grinned.
"I don't think that's possible since my insides are currently on fire with your magic," I breathed heavily.
"This has certainly been an interesting exchange of power between the two of us, hasn't it?" he said, his gaze flitting over my face.
"Yes, it has been very enlightening," I agreed.
He let out a sigh, leaning his forehead against mine, and I stared deeply into his blue eyes.
"I think I want to kiss you here all night long," he said.
"That sounds divine," I replied, watching him.
"Does it?" he asked, quirking an eyebrow at me slightly. "I've never been so hot and cold all at the same time before in my life! I'm afraid if I continued, you might freeze off some of my body parts!" He winked, and I laughed out loud at him.
It was then that I noticed he actually had frost on his eyebrows, and I smiled, reaching up to brush it off.
"I guess we could always take the kissing someplace less magical," I suggested to him.
"Kissing you is always magical, Portia, no matter where we are. And what tends to follow it is even more so."
"You know what I mean," I said, shoving at his shoulder slightly with my free hand.
He just laughed, swinging me up into his arms. He proceeded to carry me, electrical storm and all, to the edge of the circle.
Kiss #4: The Dark Rising
He could still feel the connection between us I realized as I stared up at him. But I didn't have time to contemplate the meaning of that because he leaned in, dipping down to kiss me on the mouth, touching me only with his lips and nothing else.
I closed my eyes and savored his soft and tender touch, not even able to breathe as an explosion of sparks rushed through my body, just like they always had whenever he'd kissed me in the past.
He pulled away from me suddenly, and I glanced up to look at him, seeing him staring at me with a strange emotion in his eyes.
I held still not moving an inch while I waited for him to decide what he was feeling.
It only took a second to make up his mind.
He reached out and grabbed me to him, wrapping one arm around my waist and reaching up to thread the other hand into my hair. His lips found mine again, meeting me with the same intensity of days gone by, his tongue coaxing my mouth open in our old familiar dance.
He kissed me long and hard, almost frantically, for several moments. Then the hand which was tangled in my hair, softly yanked my head to the side, and his lips left mine to work his way over my cheek. He trailed down my neck to his favorite spot, licking over the sensitive area once before he closed his mouth over it to begin sucking hard, so hard I knew he would leave a mark.
My heart was pounding, but I didn't stop him. I wanted him to want me.
He moved back to my mouth, and I wound my arms around his neck, running my fingers into his damp hair.
I found my knees backed up against the bed and he pushed me until we both fell over, bouncing onto its soft surface together.
Kiss #5: Possession of Souls
"I've failed you in every way possible!" his voice wrenched into an anguished sound and a haunted look of agony replaced the anger in his eyes as tears immediately appeared back in them again.
"Oh, Vance," I called out to him, pulling my limbs from his grasp and grabbing his face once more before crushing my lips to his.
He answered me instantly, wrapping his arms around my body and rolling me over so that he leaned over the top of me. He kissed me with a wild desperation I had never felt from him before, like a man who was drowning, struggling for his last breath, and I could feel the wetness of his tears as they fell from his eyes to mingle with my own.
He ravaged my mouth until I was sure it was bruised from the assault before he lifted his head to kiss the damp trails on my cheeks, moving down until his face was cradled into the crook my neck.
"I can't lose you again, Portia," he said, his voice muffled against my skin. He finally let loose then and gave into the sobs, letting them rack his body.
I just held him against me, not speaking and let him cry while I cried with him, stroking my fingers over his hair and down his neck as I tried to comfort him. I'd never seen him like this before, so unsure, so defeated, and I had to admit it scared me more than a little. He had always been the strong and confident one.
Well there you have it folks! If that doesn't excite you…I don't know what will!!

Vance's Undelivered Love Letter

Dear Portia,
I passed you in the hallway today at school, something you don't know I occasionally go out of my way to do just so I can hear the thoughts running through your head. I often feel like I live for those few moments. Even though I could, I try not to listen to your thoughts the rest of the time, though it's hard not to. A lot of the time your energy just washes over and envelopes me. It's an incredible feeling. I don't want to invade the privacy of your mind, but when you see me, you think of me, and that's a treat I can't seem to make myself walk away from. I hope you'll forgive me for that someday.
Today when I saw you I noticed it's becoming increasingly harder to pretend I don't recognize you. I want to stare at you. I want to drink you in from the top of your pretty black-haired head, to the tips of your cutely painted toenails. You're so beautiful, so young and full of life, so untainted by the evils of the world. When you smile the whole room lights up like the sun just moved out from behind the clouds. It almost makes me believe there still are good things to live for. Looking at you makes me wish for days filled with happiness and a life that could be normal. I don't know if that will ever be a possibility for me, but for just one minute I'd love to live in your carefree world.
I almost laughed out loud at the things I heard in your head today when I passed by you. You thought I looked "hot today, as usual," and you wondered what I'd do if you gave into your baser instincts one day and just pushed me up against a locker and kissed me. Please, baby, give into that baser instinct! You might be surprised at what you get back! I'm not as indifferent to you as I've led you to believe.
Your thoughts monopolized mine for the rest of the day. All I could think of was how I would react if you ever actually did do something like that to me. Portia, you've had me tied up in knots for hours now and you don't even know it.
My first thought was that I would grab you, turn you around and slam you back up against the lockers myself while I devoured your plump little lips. But then I figured we might draw a pretty big crowd with our hallway display, so I decided maybe I'd just scoop you up and kidnap you for the rest of the day, perhaps take you to my favorite little spot in the canyon. It's beautiful there and then I could just lay you on the ground and kiss you for hours, taking my time about it, like I really want to do.
Now, as I sit here tonight, I'm wondering how you would react to my reaction. I wish I could ask you. Would you be surprised? Would you trust me enough to let me whisk you away without any warning? Or would it scare you to find I want you so badly it nearly consumes me at times?
That's right Portia, baby. I want you more than you could possibly know. Everyday I'm tempted to give in, to show you exactly how I feel, but I gave my word that I wouldn't. If I'd have known at the time who you were and how I'd connect with you, I'd have never spoken such a vow. But I did, so I'll honor that promise because doing so will keep you safer from the evils that taint my life for that much longer. For now, I'll just be content to bask in your innocence and to watch you from afar. But only for now Portia….
