Radio Shangri-La now out in #Korea

Radio Shangri-La now out in #Korea

Released today by Sui Books. I’m told the literal translation of the title is “Happy Radio.”

My publisher says the Koreans are as eager to learn about happiness as anyone. Of course, this book is about finding happiness within yourself, with a dollop of adventure. It’s also, mostly, about how media impacts our happiness…

This marks the country in which RSL has been released in addition to the US: Brazil, the Netherlands, New Zealand, India, China and Germany.

Thanks for your support!

Friday nights on Bunker Hill

http://vimeo.com/27706496

A short film by Emily-Rose Wagner for the OWN channel. It’s about how friends and I have built community for ourselves here in LA (which gets a bad rap for being hard to navigate) by having a party every Friday night.

I’m working on a “manifesto” about why to have weekly rituals like these in our lives, and would love your feedback.

Travel with me: The Radio Shangri-La tour of #Bhutan

Last spring I was showing pictures of Bhutan and talking about how Radio Shangri-La came to be at the charming Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. A well-dressed couple approached me afterwards.  They asked if I’d consider doing a tour of Bhutan through their travel agency.  I’d had various other inquiries about such a partnership but had always backed off from the idea.

by Gelay Jamtsho

Long story short, this couple became friends and now I’m excited to partner  with them on a dynamite 7-day trip this fall (September 14-21) which includes the spectacular tsechu (festival) in Thimphu and on to the differently but equally spectacular Punakha, as well as Paro (where of course we’ll visit Tiger’s Nest) and Haa.

Now, if you’re reading this, you probably know it’s not cheap to travel to Bhutan, but this is a reasonably priced adventure that I know will be a lot of fun.  (After all, I’ll be along for the ride!)  A little over $4k if you’re sharing a room; just under $5k if you’re not.

There’s an optional add-on to India for an additional charge beforehand for the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival.  As a native, it is Mark’s area of expertise. (And he went to Bhutan the first time long before me.)

From La Jolla to Bhutan and back again: Shangri-La, READGlobal and the importance of libraries

I just got back from a couple days in Shangri-La.  Not that one.  This one is in La Jolla, California, a pretty gorgeous place, made even more amazing by members of the community of La Jolla Country Day School.

Community service members explain the project to the entire high school—then it’s my turn to address them. Holding teens attentions captive in the hot sun…Oy!

A series of bizarre and seemingly random events (sparked by our mutual fascination of Bhutan and our love of reading) led us together.  Now, we’re all working to raise money to build a library in the Kingdom, because libraries are sorely needed–and we all agree that they’re a fundamental part of a great community.

For me it was doubly exciting: they chose Radio Shangri-La as a community read to get everyone in a “Bhutan state of mind.”  (My quotes, not theirs!)  I got to talk with parents, kids of all ages, and spend time with some super-committed educators who make you think: There is hope for the future.  And: Boy do I wish I could go to school here.  (Wish everyone could!)

Some community service team members at LJCDS

I share this because

A. I’d love to do this with your group, too.  So let’s cook something up.  RSL is a tool to inspire discussion about immigration, media impact, globalization, secluded Kingdoms, and even midlife malaise.  All with the bigger message: It’s not about you.  It’s about what you can do to help others.

B. Don’t forget READ Bhutan.

C. How cool it is that an affluent school places such a value on community service–to teach their kids the importance of the greater world beyond their own, and what they can do to participate in making it better.

Silence in the news: The joy of quiet with Pico Iyer and meditating MBAs on NPR

The world works in mysterious ways.

The video of a talk I had this spring at the Fowler with the amazing Pico Iyer (about his frequent retreats to a monastery to recalibrate, and the general topic of the Joy of Quiet) was posted yesterday…

…on the same day that this story I filed aired on Morning Edition about a professor at Claremont Graduate University who teaches MBA students about the joy (and importance) of quiet to success in their work lives.

It almost seems like quiet is in vogue! ;)  and yes, I get the irony that I’m telling you this via a medium that’s adding to the noise….

Modernization and its discontents: Anxiety on the rise in Bhutan

The western menace of anxiety is on the rise, according to a story in Kuensel.

The good news is that people are seeking help more than they were even five years ago, when Kuzoo FM started a call-in show featuring one of two psychiatrists in the country–and people were too ashamed to ask for help.

The sad news is, says one of those doctors:  “Today there is lot of societal pressures, which were perhaps not there many years ago.”

And, the story adds what I’ve spent much of the last 5 years thinking about: “Education, modernisation and media have also changed the outlook and expectations of the people, which also lead to stress.”

#Breastfeeding versus the #environment

A recent push to get people to walk to work in Bhutan one day a week (car culture is sweeping Thimphu, and so a desire to avoid congestion and recommit to “green”) is creating another problem, as evidenced by this memo.  (Thanks to our correspondent in Mauritius.)

What’s up with this blog about Bhutan and happiness?

Dear friends:

Forgive me: I’ve been blogging here far less lately and Tweeting/Facebooking far more about Bhutan and happiness.

Part of that has to do with my fun part-time work covering arts, etc at KCRW which requires me to blog (and too much blogging is draining for the soul), and part of it is a new book I’m working on, but none of it is disinterest in the subject of the Kingdom, which is changing rapidly each day (especially as the nation marches into the next election cycle, copes with rapid modernization, and as refugees take hold in communities around the US in remarkable and interesting ways.)

Radio Shangri-La will be published this fall in Germany, Israel and Sweden.  I’m still committed to the READ Bhutan effort to build libraries there, and hear from readers/tourists every week about their interest in the place (lots of people want to go for free as volunteers, so I spend way too much time explaining why that’s still difficult to do.)

I’ve also been working with a tour operator to create a Shangri-La tour and a noted fashion designer is soon going to devote a percentage of profits to our library efforts.

Please keep up with me… @lisanapoli, on Facebook (I happily friend everyone) and write to me at lisa@lisanapoli.com

I’ll keep trying to post relevant information here when possible.

As they say in Bhutan, tashi delek and kaden shay!
