Seizing Power – Second Scene Of The First Chapter
I’m sharing scenes from the first chapter of Seizing Power as we wait for its release on February 22nd (2/22/22).

This week I’m sharing the second scene of that first chapter.

While the other members of the council drilled Vector and his crew with queries, Power applied himself to immediate issues like delayed shipments of nourishment bars, the addition of fifteen levels to J Model Structure 2, the fabrication of 150,000 D Model replacement arms. The requests for authorization were lodged faster than he, with his cyborg processors, could approve. It was unsustainable. He—
“My female and I will venture to Mercury Minor to investigate the situation.” Vengeance presented that extremely bad idea to the council.
Alarm coursed through Power’s circuits. The C Model and his female were warriors. Their solution to every situation was to damage or to kill. They would arrive on Mercury Minor, expecting a battle.
And they would find one. Ghost, the sole identified cyborg on Mercury Minor, was severely malfunctioning. He viewed everyone, including his brethren, as threats. The probability he had rigged his planet with explosives and other defensive devices was 99.9999 percent.
There would be war, and that would be…distracting. Power processed possible responses. He couldn’t transfer the task of investigating the situation to another warrior. Vengeance would view that as a slight.
Power also preferred not to place other beings in possible danger.
Other beings…
“I will venture to Mercury Minor.” He could perform his role from anywhere. “Vector, as your crew detected the lifeforms, we’ll utilize your ship. Five additional warships will accompany us.”
A fleet larger than that would look ostentatious, even for him.
The more Power processed his decision, the more he liked it.
The expedition would be a display of his leadership. And it would be a reward for those five captains and crews, would solve a sliver of the assignments challenge.
It would grant the warriors purpose, give them tasks to complete.
It would also be good training should their sector face invasion in the future. They had to be ever ready, ever vigilant. They could practice battle formations en route.
Vengeance didn’t appear as pleased with that solution. The male scowled. “If this is war—”
“This is an investigation.” The C Model’s reaction confirmed Power’s decision had been the right one. “As the leader of the cyborg council, I warrant an escort.” His tone was deliberately haughty.
“No one appointed you as our leader,” Vengeance grumbled.
Power hadn’t been appointed. He had won the role based on his superior fighting skills, his cunning, his lack of any other distractions. “It is done.”
“Fraggin’ hole. He’s coming with us.” Truth, one of Vector’s warriors, muttered that comment at barely audible levels. “That’s no fun.”
Vector leveled a hard glance at the male.
Truth stopped chattering.
But the message had been relayed. No one wanted him on board their ship. None of the males, including Vector, liked him.
That was damaging yet it was unimportant. Power lifted his chin. The males respected him, would follow his orders. That was all he required.
“I’m contacting the warship captains.” He sent that communication to the five beings most worthy of the assignment. “Vector, coordinate with them. We leave in three planet rotations.” He could arrange his duties in that duration. “That is all.”
Vector opened his mouth, paused for a moment, closed it again.
The male, his female, his crew, and their females marched out of the chamber. Many of the cyborgs had located their genetic matches while patrolling the cyborg-sector borders.
Mercury Minor was located close to one of those borders. Hope flickered to life inside Power.
He immediately doused it. The probability of finding his genetic match on the expedition was extremely low.
His processing power was better used elsewhere.
“I never projected we’d see this planet rotation.” Vengeance met Power’s gaze. The male’s eyes gleamed with an emotion alarmingly resembling triumph.
Power’s simulated spine straightened. The C Model was his strongest rival for leadership.
“You’re surrendering your role on the cyborg council to travel to Mercury Minor.”
“I’m not surrendering anything.” Power infused extra chill into his tone. “I won’t physically be in the council chambers, but I will remain in my role. Whether I sit in a chair or appear on a viewscreen has no bearing on my involvement in discussions.”
Vengeance glared at him.
Power gazed back at him.
The warriors around them shifted nervously in their seats.
The C Model finally shook his head. “You will never relent any of your fraggin’ control, will you?”
“I will never do that.” Power had sacrificed, had given too much to ever walk away from his role. He was in charge, would remain as the cyborgs’ leader until the moment he died. “What is the next item on the agenda?”
He pushed the processing of the upcoming journey aside and focused on the decisions that had to be made, the tasks that had to be completed.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – January 30th
I shared the first scene of Seizing Power this week here. Woot! Release day is quickly approaching.
I continue to work on the first draft of Provoking Odium (releasing in June). It is going very slowly but I love what has happened thus far. (grins) I think you’ll really enjoy this story.

Cyborgs And Keeping Secrets
Most cyborgs situated on the Homeland, including Power and other members of the cyborg council, don’t know anything about Ghost and Lethe’s offspring. They assume the baby cyborg is male and a C Model and as malfunctioning as Ghost is.
But those are all assumptions. There has been no verification of those details.
Readers of Ghost Of A Machine, Ghost and Lethe’s story, know that Rage, Joan, Crash, Safyre, Carys, Ace And Thrasher witnessed the birth of Ghost and Lethe’s child.
How did they keep such a huge secret?
They knew Ghost before they arrived on Mercury Minor. They knew he is hyper protective and a bit paranoid, and they assumed communications and everything that happened on his planet would be top secret. That is merely an aspect of being Ghost’s friend, being part of the very small group of beings he trusts.
They wouldn’t dare to transmit anything from Mercury Minor. EVER.
Once that baby cyborg was born, they realized the implications of the offspring’s identity. They agreed to say nothing, to give the cyborg council and others no additional information. Everything would come from Ghost and no one expected Ghost to communicate well…or at all.
Power and the rest of the cyborg council were busy with other things. More offspring were being born. Ghost and Lethe and their new baby cyborg were able to live private lifespans.

Throwback Thursday – Dark Strength
Most of the characters I write about are complex. They have different sides, different layers to their personalities.
Balvan, the huge green gatekeeper hero of Dark Strength, is no exception. He delights in crushing his enemies’ skulls with his big boots yet is super gentle when tending to the small creatures he rescues. Some beings believe him to be a monster yet he protects the residents of the Refuge and the beings he loves.
Elyce, the heroine of Dark Strength, sees Balvan’s complexities. She has survived her horrid past by carefully observing the beings around her. When she meets Balvan, she knows, deep in her heart, she will be safe with him. It takes more time for her to trust that knowing.

CES 2022 And Virtual Hugs
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I recently attended the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. Due to (waves at everything), many attendees AND exhibitors didn’t participate. It was about 25% the size of the regular convention.
There were still some awesome new product reveals and I had an opportunity to speak with many scientists. I’ll be incorporating their insights into upcoming stories. (grins)
Virtual reality was, of course, a big topic, and when I saw the display by OWO, I immediately thought of reading and writing buddies.
I often give you virtual hugs (hugs) and now, with innovations like OWO sensation technology, you can feel those hugs whenever you want. This has wonderful possibilities for long distance relationships (like those endured by our military heroes) and for those of us who crave touch.
We might, in the future, have the ability to cuddle with our favorite romance characters!

So You Want To Marry A Prince
Recently, I dreamed I was a character on So You Want To Marry A Prince, a Bachelor-type reality show where women vie for the attention of multiple prince/royalty-type men from various countries.
The heroine (my character) is tall, blonde, pretty and…quiet. Her sister signed her up for the show and that sister was so excited about the heroine being selected; the heroine didn’t have the heart to back out.
The heroine doesn’t expect to find love and when she peeks through the curtains, she isn’t attracted to any of the princes she first sees. The men are young and handsome (it IS a dream – grins) but she isn’t drawn to any of them.
Then she sees…him. The prince is sitting on one of the made-for-TV thrones with a resigned look on his handsome face.
And she knows. He is HER prince.
When the contestants enter the room, not every prince stands but he does…even though this is a struggle for him. She would find out later he has a chronic condition similar to MS.
Some of the other contestants gasp and say unkind things. He must have heard them. Yet he raises his chin, his expression so proud and regal, and he says nothing.
The heroine admires his strength, his courage. He is HERS. She knows this in her heart.
The first date card she receives, she chooses him. She finds out his younger brother signed him up for the show. They have a lot in common, have similar dry senses of humor, the same loyalty to family, sense of duty, etc.
Her prince is technically the crown prince but he plans to step aside and allow his brother become the next king. He has decided never to marry and never to have children, has already decided to choose no one on the show.
Our heroine tries to change her prince’s mind but he is so blasted noble and proud. He doesn’t want to ‘inflict’ his condition on anyone else. He tries to dissuade her and goes on dates with other contestants.
The heroine realizes he feels he has little to offer a potential partner. She changes tactics. She confronts him, points out that the show is called So You Want To Marry A Prince, that the primary goal of many contestants is to become a princess, that they aren’t looking for love or ‘normal’ relationships.
SHE is looking for love and doesn’t care about marrying a prince. I think both of them realize this but she gives him a reason to justify what he perceives as a selfish act-to indulge in his caring for her and seek happiness for himself.
Decision day comes. More and more contestants are eliminated until our heroine is sitting by herself. She feels awkward, uncomfortable.
Her prince sees that, makes the great (and highly visible to the cameras) effort to change seats to sit beside her, ensuring she isn’t alone.
He takes her hand.
And she knows she has been chosen. She has found her Prince, love, and a royal happy ever after.

Thousands Of Friends
When I was a teenager, I would volunteer at long term care residences. For a few fortunate months, I was paired with an absolutely wonderful and hilariously witty older woman I grew to love dearly. She was blind, was slowly going deaf. My task was to read to her.
I asked her if she was scared. Once she lost her remaining hearing, she would be cut off communication-wise from almost everyone.
(She no longer had the hand coordination to read braille. And computers weren’t as advanced then as they are now.)
She would be alone.
She smiled at me. “Readers are never alone, my love. We have thousands of friends living up in here.” She tapped her forehead. “I’ll simply be spending more time with them. We’ll have grand adventures and good long chats.”
I have thought of her often during this pandemic. My corner of the universe is currently locked down again. We shouldn’t leave the house unless it is necessary. We’re separated from many loved ones.
But I have thousands of friends living in my brain, heroes and heroines from the thousands of novels I’ve read and written and will write in the future.
That’s a gift.

Cyborgs And Parents Who Never Age
My Awesome Mom is getting older. She gathers more laugh lines on her beautiful face every year. Her fastball is slowing down a bit. It is still faster than mine is. (grins) My Awesome Mom could have turned pro if the fates had been aligned. She’s a bada$$.
I would love for my Awesome Mom to remain young forever.
That isn’t possible…yet… for humans. It IS possible for cyborgs and for cyborgs’ genetic matches.
Eirene Ours’/Cadet’s parents, Ghost and Lethe, will never age. They will look the same, will likely have the same physical capabilities for their entire lifespans.
But they WILL change emotionally and mentally. Becoming parents has shifted Ghost and Lethe’s outlooks on the universe. Lethe, for example, is more cautious. She watches what she says (as her daughter repeated everything she uttered). She is truly a Mom.
I love seeing her evolution as a being.

Throwback Thursday – Crash And Burn
Crash And Burn is a three-tissue read so ensure you’re in the mood for a good cry (that’s me every day lately – grins) when you read it.
This was the toughest story I’ve ever written but it had to be told because it impacts all cyborgs everywhere. The actions in Crash And Burn ripple throughout the universe.
Crash was manufactured to be one of the best warriors in the universe. The cyborg has spent many human lifespans fighting the enemy. But, unlike his battle-loving brethren, he doesn’t enjoy killing. When he escapes the Humanoid Alliance, he vows to never end another life.
Then he meets Safyre, an infuriating human female, and he considers breaking his vow.
Safyre will do anything to save her friend, the being she loves like a sister. She’ll ravish a huge hunky cyborg, kiss his best friend, and invoke scorching hot desires the male never realized he could feel. Dark soulful eyes, a quick wit, and a tempestuous passion won’t divert her from her mission.
Love, and a planet-destroying weapon, however, might stop her permanently.
