Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – July 27

It is slow going because I am distracted by the fun secret writing project. (grins) It is giving me so much joy!
Have a wonderful week, my friends. (big hugs) Celebrate your own unique markings! Scars prove we are strong and have survived sh*t. Stretch marks are proof we have changed over the years and that’s an awesome thing! Freckles and birth marks are kisses from the sun and/or from nature. They make us different and interesting and one of a kind (like Cabbage Patch Kids – laughs).
The Cyborg’s Secret Baby

A Cover For Moonbeam!
The cover for the re-release of the first two (lightly revised) Moonbeam stories has been crafted!
It has a super simple cover, with no man titty, because I want everyone to know these are re-releases and also that these are older stories.
Plus I wanted the titles of the stories on the cover (to prevent long-time reading buddies from re-buying them) and adding too much more than that would make it look crowded.

Lee And The Value Of Different Points Of View
Spoiler Alert – This post will talk about Lee, and it WILL contain spoilers. If you haven’t yet watched this movie based on the life of Lee Miller, you might wish to skip this post.
I recently watched the movie, Lee, which covers a portion of the life of Lee Miller, a fashion model turned WWII correspondent for Vogue.
The subject matter is challenging but it is well crafted and I’m glad I watched it.
Because it shows WWII from a female perspective.
And there aren’t many movies like that.
Lee Miller, being a woman reporting for a magazine with a mostly female readership, often focused on the horrors war inflicted on women.
And there were horrors. Plenty of them.
Those horrors were brought about by the ‘bad guys’, yes, but also by the ‘good guys’ and not many people talk about that unfortunately common aspect of war. Liberated women were expected to be ‘grateful’, even though their suffering, at least in the short run, was often equivalent under both leaderships.
(The filter of the camera lens puts some distance between us and the terrors. That allowed me to better cope with the revelations.)
Telling a known story from a different point of view can change it.
Completely.
If you’re stuck in your storytelling, try changing the point of view.

Throwback Thursday – Warlord’s Return
I love circular storytelling and Warlord’s Return brings us back to where the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series began – in the Refuge, the settlement in the Dark Thoughts series.
There’s also an adorably bloodthirsty mini-dragon.

Warlord’s Return
Ariq is a barbarian warrior seeking a war.
He locates that battle when he meets Xareni.

Gardens And The Heat
It has been a tad bit warm in my corner of the universe. (grins) Unexpected and/or excessive heat can stress and perhaps even kill plants.
Climate change is very real. The world is getting hotter. It makes sense to prepare for the heat when planting a garden.
Mulch is a must-have. (I spread knee-deep dried leaves on my garden beds every Fall/Autumn for this purpose.) As is other organic materials in the soil. That helps to retain water.
And a mulch regulates temperatures and protects the soil from baking.
Gardeners often say, “Bare soil is death.” Plants die. Microorganisms die. It is rare for there to be any bare soil in nature. And that’s why.
Many plants, like lettuce, only require a few inches of soil. So I fill out containers by putting a layer of partially composed leaves in the bottom, under the soil. This organic material holds onto water, acting like a sponge, allowing the plants to access it later.
On hot, sunny days, I also water deeply in the morning, before the sun shines on the plants. I will turn the hose on, direct it at the base of a plant and count to 20. This water will soak the mulch, which will hold onto the moisture for much of the day.
I create partially shaded areas in the garden. Tomato plants, for example, love sun and (reasonable) heat. They grow tall and shade plants like the heat hating lettuce. The sun and heat loving butternut squash climbs over a frame, shading the more vulnerable plants under it.
During the heat of the day, I try not to disturb the soil. I don’t weed. I don’t plant. I try not to even walk on the pathways.
Any soil that I expose will dry out.
It also stresses the plants. And they are feeling a lot of stress already from the heat and blazing sun. Minimizing additional stress (like from, for example, pruning) might make the difference between life and death.
I DO weed. That’s necessary. But I do that in the morning or in the evening. And, when I can, I chop and drop, leaving the weeds on the ground to decompose. That returns more moisture to the soil.
These are little things but they add up to make a difference!

Green Spaces In Hong Kong
The images usually captured of Hong Kong are the skyscrapers, the malls, the huge digital billboards, the urban spaces.
And there is plenty of that in the city.
But there are also green spaces, parks, trees, container gardens, and other bits of nature sufficient for even nature-loving me. (smiles)
There are hikes through parks on hills that give us great views of the city. There are areas to sit and watch the birds and the bees, tucked away from other people.
There is peace and serenity to be found in Hong Kong. Look for it.

Muse Food – Shrimp Trucks In Dubai
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this eye-catching art installation in Dubai.
It looks like the GIANT shrimp is directing the truck. (grins)
The unexpectedness of this artwork is awesome. We don’t think of shrimp as a thing to be celebrated in very dry Dubai. We NEVER expect a giant shrimp. Ever. It doesn’t matter where on the planet we are. And the blue of the truck pops against the sand-colored buildings.
Yet it, somehow, works with the space.
Delight your readers with something unexpected also, something that works with your story yet they would have never imagined they’d read.

As I shared with you yesterday, I have decided to take a chance and re-release my previously published Moonbeam stories! Woot! I love these stories. They are fun and lighter yet very steamy and I think it will make some reading buddies smile.
The re-release dates aren’t yet solidified. And there will be no pre-orders (as I lost that privilege at a certain bookseller because I cancelled a pre-order. – eye roll).

Cyborg Sizzle Homeland Omnibus

The Moonbeam Re-Releases
I’ve decided to take a huge chance and re-release my previously published Moonbeam stories (Lust By Moonbeam, Ravished By Moonbeam, Exposed By Moonbeam and Passion By Moonbeam).
I don’t know how long they will be available for sale. Things are still shifting in the US. But I love these stories and I’d like to share them with you if and when I still can.
The covers won’t have the expected man titty on them.

There’s a lot of information to put on these covers and I also prefer not to place any cover models at risk (even if only their chests are visible).
And I am hoping that the less man chest fantastic covers will signal to you and to other reading buddies that these are re-releases. I don’t want you to accidentally re-buy any of my stories.
