The Endless

With last night, I've completed the 9th draft of the book, in anticipation of a secret reading over the weekend. A few weeks ago, I edited like a gardener. This time I was also a gardener – in a cornfield.

I am aware of DaVinci's saying. But knowing this is a universal artists' truth doesn't make it significantly easier. That said, I'm fairly sure I've cut over 2000 words in the last few weeks, probably more. And that much feels great.

With this draft in place, I now intend to be the herb docto...

Updates & Ephemera

A thrilling new year to all. Soon as the sun clocks out at 5:30, I look to the lengthening months. Here we come summer solstice!

I've received all the comments I can expect from my readers and have reentered editing. The gist is tightening and clarifying very minor points in the action. Hopefully nothing's glaring in there. I'm targeting a mid- to late-February drop of manuscripts.

My trepidations about performance eased last week when I realized I'll have to learn the book as well as a favorit...

I've received back all the comments I can expect from my readers, and have reentered editing. The gist is tightening and clarifying very minor points in the action. Hopefully nothing's glaring in there, but by god, if so it won't last. I'm targeting a mid- to late-February drop of manuscripts.

On Remembering Your Faces

I've had no trouble remembering my blessings lately. A steady income; freelance topping it off; time every day to exercise; my wonderful friends; Albuquerque's 52° mid-afternoons; the absence of a relationship burrowing holes in my time. I'm not unamazed to say I'm having the best winter of my life. For the first time since I can remember, it's December and I'm not depressed.

But I'd forgotten something basic, and it took a film to remind me. We all have that short story, painting, novel, pho...

When You Say Jump, I Say How Far

In 2007, the way I understood performance–and its purpose–changed. I started to see it as a remembering: of why I wrote the poems; where I was, spiritually, when I found them; why they are important enough to reside in the world. It was the natural result of drilling in, to find their purpose, in order to write them. It produced the most rewarding performances of my life.

The Wellwater Dredge one-man-show scares me where it splits from its predecessor. While they're both told in persona, Wellw...

Directions to the Equator

If we are facing the right direction,
all we have to do is keep walking.

Things are changing and not changing. Wellwater Dredge is approaching the casking stage, wherein I'll send it to a few of my favorite publishers. It'll mature some in the months between my mailing and theirs. If anyone bites I'll offer a more aged version, and that'll be that. If no one's interested, I have plans, but I won't announce them here.

Meanwhile, Pat continues to amaze me. Not only does she prove her friendship da...

The Time Traveler's Editor

If you haven't read The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger, this is all spoiler. Take it as a part 1. I want to get it out the door before leaving for Portland this week.

First, a few admissions:
Despite my complaints, I read it in 5 days, which is a record for a slow-poke like me.I cried through the last 20 pages, pretty hard. I had to stop before I could read the very end, which started me up again. The structure is impressive, if a bit repetitive.A week after finishing it, Henry...

Done, and of course crying

When I've got a little distance, we'll see what can be said about it.

Dispatch from Page 192

After Monday night discovering The Time Traveler's Wife at the local dollar theater, I'm nearly halfway through the novel, and I have thoughts, oh yes.

First, though, is a question.

How has no one told me about this book?!
