Oblivion: Interview with Anthony at Bookzone 4 Boys Blog

I read somewhere that you feel Oblivion to be the best book you have written. What is it about Oblivion that makes it so special for you?

Partly, it’s the characters. I think Pedro, the Peruvian street urchin, and Scott, the American twin who sells out and goes bad are two of the most interesting and well-drawn characters I’ve ever created. Partly it’s the amount of action I’ve managed to pack into the book which takes place all over the world with volcano eruptions, drug lords, slave markets, battles on the ice etc, etc. But above all, I think the book is my most personal. It has something – vaguely – to say. That may not matter to you but it matters to me.

Anthony Horowitz’s top 10 Apocalypse Books – The Guardian

Tieing in with yesterday’s launch of Oblivion, the final book in the Power of Five series, Anthony lists his top ten apocalyptic books.

Dystopia. Apocalypse. Death and destruction. There are two problems when you set out to write a book in this vein. The first is that you find yourself very limited as to what you can actually describe. After all, there are so many ways that the world can end – war, disease, alien invasion, zombification etc. And whatever the cause, the end result is going to be pretty much the same: mass starvation, anarchy, long-term suffering and slow death. Unless you’re writing a screwball comedy (and there have been attempts), there’s hardly going to be much variation in the mood of the book either.

What to expect in Oblivion…

The earth has almost been destroyed by the forces of darkness. Those who have survived are barely human, drifting in a world ruled by famine, terrorism and war. Any last hope now rests with five extraordinary teenagers: the Gatekeepers.

The Five must find each other and make a final stand against Chaos, King of the Old Ones … but Chaos is everywhere. He calls to them from Antarctica, where he is gathering his forces, preparing for a last battle in the frozen wasteland of Oblivion. And one of the Five has turned traitor. The others know that without him they cannot win.

The House of Silk – Chosen by The Richard and Judy Book Club

Anthony’s Sherlock Holmes book The House of Silk has been featured on the Richard and Judy Book Club.

From the Review:

“As to the story… well, if Conan Doyle could come back from the grave (something that as a firm believer in spiritualism and the power of mediums, he often threatened to do) he would certainly give Horowitz a warm, if spectral, handshake.”

“Horowitz spins an ever-more dramatic and dangerous story. What begins as a puzzle swiftly becomes a mystery with deeply sinister overtones. As Holmes and Watson become immersed in their investigations, they begin to hear the whispered words ‘the House of Silk’… what does the phrase mean? What links London’s foggy streets with the violent underworld that seethes in the American city of Boston?

This is quite simply one of the best detective mysteries I have read for a long time. Congratulations, Mr Horowitz. Can we have another one please?”
